Descendants of Samuel (Justice) and Mary Isabel Johnson

Contributed by Loren Robinson

Samuel was a recalcitrant slave on THE JUSTICE PLANTATION in PIKE COUNTY, KENTUCKY before the beginning of the Civil War (1861). The date and place of his birth are unknown. He was said to have been a stubbornly defiant slave who was continually trying to persuade his fellow slaves to stand up against their masters. He became so very hard to handle that he was eventually sold to the owner of the neighboring JOHNSON PLANTATION, also located in PIKE COUNTY, KENTUCKY. He became known thereafter as Sam Johnson but was always referred to as “Old Man Justice.” Upon the death of Charles W. Johnson, owner of THE JOHNSON PLANTATION, “Old Man Justice” and his children became heirs to a vast area of land including “THE JOHNSON PLANTATION.” Unfortunately, only one of the children, Taylor Johnson, was able to actually claim and occupy a portion of the inherited land.
Mary Isabel was a slave on the JOHNSON PLANTATION when Sam was bought by her master. She became his wife some time during the late 1840’s.

**Almina’s parents George William Platte and Mary Wilson Platte were immigrants from County Cork, Ireland. They came to America some time during the early 1840’s. Failure of potato crop in Ireland during that time caused a terrible famine. Thousands of people died and hundreds of thousands left the country to look for a better life. Almina’s parents were among those who came to the United States. They first settled in southeastern Pennsylvania where a colony of refugees, many of them Irish, were able to get a new start by working as farm laborers. They were sometimes called the “Pennsylvania Dutch” merely because they were thought to be descendants of the Dutch people who had made the very first settlements in Pennsylvania in 1620. Almina’s parents with Almina and her sisters, Sally and Naomi, later moved to a rural area in Indiana called Black Rock. The place was so called because there were miles and miles of soft coal fields where the coal veins could be seen on the surface of the ground. The entire area was spotted here and there with black lumps of coal resembling black rocks.
From Indiana, the Plattes traveled to Pike County, Ohio where Almina met and married James Thacker. Following the birth of James Thacker, Jr., James Thacker Sr, became one of more than 1000 raw recruits from Ohio who were called to serve in the Union Army during the Civil War. After the Emancipation Proclamation issued by Abraham Lincoln brought an end to the War, James Thacker’s name appeared on the “Dead List” of men who had been called from Ohio and had been killed during the last days of the War. Five years later, James Thacker returned “alive and well” to find Almina married to Samuel Marion Johnson, Sr., and the mother of three Johnson children.
