Descendants of James Finley

Generation No. 1

1.  James2 Finley  (Unknown1) was born Bet. 1770 - 1775 in (Belfast?) Ireland, and
died May 20, 1836 in Huntington Twp/Ross Co/Ohio.  He married Ann Cowden Abt. 1796
in Ireland.  She was born Abt. 1780 in Ireland, and died September 15, 1821 in
Huntington Twp/Ross Co/Ohio.

Notes:
State Centennial History of the County of Ross (Ohio) Vol II (Baltimore, 1981),
pg. 341-342: "James Finley and family emigrated from Ireland to the United States
in 1811.  They landed in New England, whence they continued their migration until
finally reaching Huntington township, a few years later.  The family consisted of
seven children.  ISAAC J. Finley was probably the best known of their descendents.
he was for many years a justice of the peace in Huntington township, and held
other posistions of trust and responsibility.  He was a carpenter by trade, a
vocation which be followed in early life.  In 1868 he was a member of the Ohio
legislature from Ross County, serving one term.. The "Pioneer Record of Ross
County" appeared in 1871, as the product of Isaac J. Finley and Rufus Putnam.
Though it contains less than a hundred and fifty octavo pages, it nevertheless
records much valuable pioneer history, which should have been lost but for its
timely appearance in this little volume.  Other members of the Finley family were
prominent in the early days in Huntington.  WILLIAM was a soldier through the
Mexican war.  He died of cholera in Cincinnati.  MOSES was township treasurer of
Huntington for many years.  JOHN, who married Mary Wentworth, died in 1858.  These
were the parent of Isaac J., mentioned above."

Abt. 1819 in Ross Co/OH, and died June 02, 1863 in Huntington/Ross Co/Ohio.

Notes for Isaac Finley:
Email from Ann Oswald 9/17/00: I am preparing to go to Kansas in October and
research my g/grandparents + my g/g/grandparents. Margaret Finley was my
g/g/grandmother, she was the daughter of Isaac and Mary Hennes Finley. Isaac
Finley was born in 1816 in Ross Co/OH to James and Ann Finley. He was a carpenter
by trade. He married Mary D. Henness Jan 28, 1839. Both Mary and Isaac died of
typhoid fever in 1863 and are buried in the Baptist Hill Cemetery in Huntington
Twp. Mary D. Hennes was born in Ross Co/OH in 1819 to William Henness and Nancy
Hendrick. Mary and Isaac had twelve children: John 1839 , William 1841, James
1843, Moses 1846, Scott 1848, Margaret 1850, Nancy 1851, Martha 1855, Mary 1857,
Ida 1860, Ellen 1861, Isaac 1863. Ellen died in childhood and the 3 oldest boys
died in the Civil War. Margaret Finley was born to Isaac Finley and Mary D.
Henness in Ross Co/Oh in March 1860. In 1863 she endured much sorrow for one so
young. Her parents both died of typhoid fever that year, and 3 oldest brothers
were all serving in the Civil War. William was killed at the battle of
Chickamauga in 1863, James contracted TB and died in 1863, and John was wounded
that year and later died from the wounds. Sister Martha, then 8 yrs old went to
live w/a cousin Sara Finley and her husband James Eliot. The two youngest
childen, Ida and newborn infant Isaac were taken in by their fathers sister, Mary
Finley and her husband Francis Hester. Margaret then 13 yrs old evidently kept
house for her older brothers, Moses and Scott and younger sister Nancy. In 1871
Margaret married Levi Guess, son of Benzalla Wells Guess and Jame Martin Guess in
Maroa, Ill, probaby going there to be married since Moses was living there at the
time. Shortly after their marriage Levi and Margaret moved to Osborne Co, Kansas.
Now you know the reason I am going to KS for the 2nd time to research. There is a
lot more to this story and rather lenghty to go into. I have a felling that is
exactly what happened with your Elvira. The epidemic probably spread thru
families and that is why we have trouble researching.

Mitchel/Mitchell and Sarah Acton. He was born December 13, 1844 in Ohio, and died
November 30, 1873 in Bainbridge/Ross Co/OH.

Notes for Elvira S. Finley:
Research Notes:
1. 7/Feb/2000 Ross County Public Hlth Dept denied my request for a death cert as
their records begin 1888.
2. My proof that William is Elvira's father is based on the process of
elimination. I knew that she had to be the offspring of one of the Finley
children between James Finley and Ann Cowden. I did not have decendeny
information on James Jr and William. I found that James died before Elvira was
born and William died shortly after she was born in Cincinnati of cholera after he
returned from the Mexican War (he is nowhere to be found in the 1850 Federal
Census). This is not yet sufficient proof and I am actively researching this.
3. After Elvira died, guardianship of Sarah and William Mitchel went to Silas P.
Nessell, as named in her estate records. Silas' wife is Elizabeth W. Finley, who
is a daughter of John Finley and Mary Wentworth.
