Descendants of Henry Purgett

(1.) Henry Purgett — Purgitt — Purget was born in 1753 near Frederick Town, Maryland. " The Henry Purgitt after whom Purgittsville is named, was on the Hampshire County, Virginia tax rolls as early as 1782. Joseph Neville’s survey record reports "then id Henry Purgate enter 400 acres of land on the waters of Mill Creek adjacent to the land of John Moffatt and John Glaze to the north side on Jan.7, 1785’(45)". In 1794 Henry received a land transfer of 137 _ acres on Mill Creek from Elizabeth Fidler (Fiedler), who had gotten the land in a land transfer from her son Jacob on 12/10/1794. Elizabeth was the widow of George Fidler. Henry married Elizabeth and resided in Hampshire Co. Virginia. Henry’s large log house is located in Purgittsville on the west side of the highway and at one time it was used as a stage coach stop. Henry "…was drafted in 1778 in the Relolutionary Army in Hampshire County, under Captain Abraham Johnson in Colonel Johson’s Virginia Regiment and served a little over 6 months. Ended service in 1781 …Received pension in Hampshire County, 21 Oct 1833." (West Virginians in the American Revolution, assembled and edited by Ross B. Johnson, p. 229. Va. No. 16977, No. S. 18170 — pension application number). According to the Application for Pension papers dated 1832, (That in the year 1778 he was drafted in a company of Abraham Johnson and was attached to a regiment commanded by Col. Riddle and Major Vossouter, that they marched to the mouth of Beaver Pennsylvania where they built a fort called Fort McIntosh at a place where the town of Beaver now stands, after that they marched to Tuscarawas on the head waters of the Meskingum where they built Fort Laurens and some time after returned home having been called into service for six months. In the year 1781 he was drafted to go after the Tories in the County of Hardy and fought two or three weeks. This was known as Claypool’s Rebellion. He was given no discharge papers so had to have testimony of people who knew he was in the was , Frederick High, Henry High, and John Sedgwick. …He received $64.64 in arrears in 1833 and was allowed $21.55 per year after.) The will of Henry was written Feb. 4,1835 and was probated on March 27,1837 (Early Records of Hampshire Co.). In his will he leaves the 137 _ acres of land on Mill Creek to his son William "…after the death of my wife and myself together with all my ploughs and horse …….rest of my property both real and personal to my 6 other children to be divided equally." Frederick Purget, Mary Recor, Elizabeth Shoemaker, Henry Purget, George Purget, and Rachel Suber, (From will of Henry Purget) The large log house that was his is now owned by Lawrence High (as of 1988). Historic Hampshire pub. 1976 has pictures and articles of Purgetts.

(In the opinion of this writter, I believe Henry was married before as his son Frederick was born in 1786 and Henry Jr. was born in 1796/7 , and in the will it is William who gets the 137 _ acres which Henry received from Elizabeth Fiedler which makes me think he was their oldest son. Also, listed as 3 people in 1782 and 1784) There is a Purget/High Cemetery in Purgittsville and I think they are burried there.

2. Frederick Purgett (1 Henry) was born in 1786 in Hampshire Co. WV. (not proved). He died in Ohio sometime after 1860. He married Mollie (Mary) Shoemaker who was born in 1788 in WV. (ages figured from census). Frederick served in the war of 1812 (no records). They emigrated to Twin Twp., Ross Co., Ohio sometime before 1820 and ..’Hewed out a farm in the midst of the forest and spent the remainder of his life there. He was a Whig and afterward a Republican. (ref. Portrait and Biographical Records of Iroquois Co., Il). Frederick bought his first piece of land in 1819 from Benjamin Turner on 8 Sept. in the southern part of Twin Twp., Ross, Co.. One hundred acres for $175.00. He later added to his holdings , much of which he bought and sold with one item of interest. In Feb of 1853, he sold a piece of land to the Directors of School Dist. #14 for one penny. By 1850 his holdings were valued at $5000. And by 1860 from $5000. Down to $1200. When he died he owned 201 _ acres. According to the census figures, he is listed in Hampshire Co., Va. In 1820 with himself and wife and Mariah (Maria). By 1820, he is listed in Ohio with he and his wife, Mariah, Anna, Sidney, and Henry plus 2 other girls under 10. By 1830 , those 2 girls are missing plus Mariah has married but now have Anna, Sidney, Henry, Jacob, Darcus and James. In 1840 there is he and his wife, Henry, Darcus, Jacob, James, Rachel and 1 girl under 10, 1girl under 5 and 1 boy under 5. By 1850 these last 3 are missing. This makes 13 children. Sometime between 1850 and 1860 his wife, Molly died and in 1860 he is listed with just James, age 28, listed as idiot, plus a hired man named Charles Lee and a housekeeper Christiana Toops and her daughter Nancy. She may have been the wife of Alexander Toops who he sold 40 acres to in 1853 right next to his place. He is listed as a member of the church council of the 1st session of the Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge in 1841 (ref. History of Ross and Highland Co. pp.303). Land records of Indiana show an 80 acre purchase for a Frederick Purgit with a home address of Ross Co.. in 1836. This may or may not be the property that Henry Purgett moved to in 1840. According to old oral records, they had 10 children, all of whom died but one, but records have revealed a lot more. Frederick made out his will and it was signed on 24 Aug. 1862 and his property wa inventories by 24 Feb. 1863, so he must have died but cannot find his grave, yet. In his will he…"gives and bequeaths to my son James the farm in which I now reside containing 201 _ acres held by 3 separate deeds. One from John Turner and wife dated 1819, one from John Storm and wife dated 1843, and one from Alen Lathem and wife dated 1855." "The above farm to be rented and tenented ……and proceeds applied to his support" Some household goods and $25.00 to carry him until he could draw monies from the farm. He explains giving him such a large share because of his inability to provide for himself. After the death of James the property to be divided equally amoung his son Henry, daughter Mariah Pennisten, daughter Ann Shoemaker, daughter Darcus Clark, granddaughter Mary Elizabeth (daughter of Jacob, decd.) , heirs of daughter Sidney Mustard decd. and the heirs of daughter Rachel Rae. To granddaughter Mary Elizabeth, 50 acres off the north end of his land deeded me by John Wilson and wife known as Baty tract. To Rachel Rae $5. In money as her full share The rest to be divided after all bills paid. He names his neighbor John Addy to execute his will and made him guardian of James . The will was wittnessed by George Obriant and George Obriant Jr. In the 1870 census James is listed as living with James and Slane Tuvell. Slane is thought to be a cousin. Note. Frederick could not read or write and have found his name on legal documents spelled 4 different ways.

He was very successful and his farm was considered quite valuable. He belonged to the Methodist Epescopal Church and gave liberally to its suport. His first presidential vote was for William Henry Harrison and his last ballot for the grandson, William Benjamin Harrison. He was a Whig and then a Republican. Lydia died in 1891 and in July of 1893, Henry made out his will (ref. Copies of will, trusteeship and sale documents from Frank and Iris Purget, Hulbert, Oklahoma). In his will he directs his trustees, John Davis and Josiah Williams to first pay all his children $375. With the exception of Frederick, to make up for the value of a team of mules advanced to him. Then directs them to sell everything and after bill, to divide equally the balance among his children. The one exception being that the trustees give to one of his daughters sums from time to time and invest the rest and at her death should go to her children. But … "that the husband of my daughter shall not receive nor have control of any part"…"and carry out this part of my will strictly" Henry died April 21, 1895. The public auction was held on Tues. May 28th, 1895 with 2 conditions. Anything under $5. Was to be paid in cash and all sums over $5 , a credit of 12 months upon approval at 7% interest. The sale netted over $20,000.
