OBITUARY OF JOHN WILLIAM MCMACHAN
A resident of this vicinity for 72 years, John William McMachan 77, retired coal
miner of Danville Route 1 near Batestown, died at 12 o;clok noon Sunday in Lake
View Hospital where he had be a patient since last Dec 27. He had been in poor
health for several years.
Mr. McMachan was born May 6 1867 in Ohio, a sone of John and Betty Waatts
McMachan. Th family came to this vicinity when he was five years of age and he
had
resided her since that time.
Surviving are the widow, Mrs Anna McMachan; four sons, Russell H of
Springfield, Ohio, Fred of Peoria, and Theodorea and Ralph both of Chicago;
three
daughters, Mrs Bessie Howe, Mrs. Bertha Freeland and Miss Esther McMachan all of
Danville; 22 grandchildre, five of whom are in the armed forces and 11 great-
grandchildren; Also four half-brothers Andrew Elliott, Thomas Wlliott and Bert
Elliott, all of Danville, and Ed Elliott of Catlin; and one half-sister, Mrs
Allie
Wastson of Kenning.
The body will remain at the Edmund & Dickson Funeral Home for services there
at 3 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. George Clark, pastor of the Assembly of God Church
of
which he was a member, will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.

ANNA M,MAHAN Dies at Home; Ill 5 months
Mrs Anna S. McMahan, 81, Bates town, Route 1, died Thursday night at her home
after a 5 month illness. The widow of J. William McMahan, Mrs. McMahan came to
this community 60 years ago from Ohio. She was born in that state Dec. 17, 1867
a
daughter of Peter and Sophie Wetzel Eve. Shae was a member of the Assembly of
God
Church.
Surviving are four sons, Russwll, Springfield, Ohio; FRED, Peoria; Ted, Chicago
and Ralph, Tampa: Two daughters, Mrs John Freeland, Danville, and Esther
McMahan,
Peoria; one step-daughter Mrs clifton Howe, Danville: 14 grandchildren and five
great-grandchildren.
The body is at the Edmund & Dickson Funeral Home where services will be held at
2 p.m. Sunday. The Rev James Hyllberg will officciate, with burial in Oak Hill
Cemetery.

Research Notes:
1. 7/Feb/2000 Ross County Public Hlth Dept denied my request for a death cert as
their records begin 1888.
2. My proof that William is Elvira's father is based on the process of
elimination. I knew that she had to be the offspring of one of the Finley
children between James Finley and Ann Cowden. I did not have decendeny
information on James Jr and William. I found that James died before Elvira was
born and William died shortly after she was born in Cincinnati of cholera after
he
returned from the Mexican War (he is nowhere to be found in the 1850 Federal
Census). This is not yet sufficient proof and I am actively researching this.
3. After Elvira died, guardianship of Sarah and William Mitchel went to Silas P.
Nessell, as named in her estate records. Silas' wife is Elizabeth W. Finley, who
is a daughter of John Finley and Mary Wentworth.
