Lexington. W.W. Cockley has erected a massive tablet in the cemetery here to commemorate his parents who have been dead over 40 years. It is surmounted by a massive globe and is most admirable in design and execution. It was done by W.H. Dukes, who will put up an equally fine stone in commemoration of Charles Shafer. The bones of over 1,400 persons crumble in the cemetery, Mrs. Searles being the first to be buried in the dark seclusion of the forest there about 80 years ago. The cemetery has been beautifully adorned and artistically graded under the supervision of John B. Williams, the superintendent, and it is a veritable Elysium of the dead. Sexton (1891): J.B. Williams [Richland Shield & Banner: 17 October 1891] Lexington. Owing to some difference with the cemetery clerk, we are sorry to note that our efficient sexton, J.B. Williams, has quit and moved his fixtures home after performing the duty of sexton for the past thirteen years. [Richland Shield & Banner: 19 December 1891, Vol. LXXIV, No. 30]
