Letter From Capt. Hiram Miller

Through the politeness of Mrs. Hiram Miller, we are allowed to make a few extracts from a letter she received yesterday from her husband:

Battle Field, near Pittsburg Landing,
April 11th., 1862

Dear Wife -- For 3½ hours the 15th. Regiment faced a perfect hail storm of bullets, shot and shell, and not a man in the Regiment flinched.

The following are the killed and wounded belonging to Company C, 15th. Regiment:  Wm. Rogers lost his right arm;  Joel Miller and R. Davis I fear will each loose a leg;  J. Numbers had part of his chin shot away;  Wm. C. Markward received a severe flesh wound in the hip;  B. Hissong was shot in the forehead and killed;  Hiram Moorehouse severely in the hip;  Daniel Thuma in the hand, slightly, and Sergeant Mulford, color bearer in the shoulder, five balls passed through the flag and one in the flagstaff.

Capt. A.C. Cummins was severely wounded in the shoulder.  He is a brave fellow.

H. Miller, Capt. Co. C

  • According to Anne H. (12/2010), Reuben "Ben" Hissong was the son of Jacob and Margaret (Spayde) Hissong.  The battle Capt. Miller described was "Shiloh" near Pittsburg Landing, Tennessee on Apr. 6-7,1862.
