Born of Scotch-Irish parentage in 1851 in the village of Dalton, Wayne, Ohio. Starting at the age of 2 years he was cared for by his uncle. Attended Mt. Union College. Taught school between the ages of 17 and 18, receiving $20/month. Read medicine at Alliance, Ohio. Settled at Mansfield where he was appointed local surgeon of the Baltimore & Ohio RR and in 1884 he was appointed Company Surgeon of the same. In 1883 he was appointed the physician of the Children's Home of Richland Co.
