Spring 1848 - David Shofner vs Elizabeth Shofner

married 8 February 1837 in Paris, Richland County, OH

lived together as man and wife until about the 1st of January 1845 when she willfully abandoned the house of the petitioner and has been living a life of public prostitution


Spring 1850 - Margaret Green vs. John Green

married 04 Jul 1848 in Richland County

husband is habitual drunkenness and abusive and personal violence   


Jul 1850 - Jacob Backenstow vs. Elizabeth Backenstow, formerly Elizabeth Plank

married March 1849 in the County of Richland, living as man and wife until she abandoned him in January 1850


 Jul 1850 - Charity Croyl vs. Jacob Croyl

married 10th April 1846 in Richland County, and on the next subsequent day, willfully abandoned her and has failed to support her or her child, the fruit of said marriage

(note, name also spelled as Crile and Cryle)


Aug 1850 - Catharine Townsend vs Kneeland W. Townsend

married Aug 1846 in Richland county, and that about the last of July or first of August 1847, said Kneeland abandoned her and has been gone more than three years and is charged with willful absence and gross neglect of duty


Oct 1850 - Catharine Gardner vs. Lloyd Gardner

married 1843 in the township of Mifflin in the County of Richland, cohabited as man and wife for 3 months, when he abandoned her and has been gone for over three years


Feb 1851 - Hatswild Smith vs. Ann E. Smith

married July 1850 in Richland County, lived together for 5 weeks as husband and wife and that said Ann E. Smith refused to have sexual intercourse with him, alleging she could not copulate in consequence of physical disability


Mar 1851 - Sophia Phillips vs. Augustus Phillips

married in 1827 in Cuyahoga County, OH, living as husband and wife until the 1st day of May 1847, when said Augustus left, and went to parts unknown, and in the latter part of said time, Augustus was to her extremely cruel, beating and bruising the petitioner and greatly jeopardizing her health.  There are six children living in age from five to nineteen


Mar 1851 - Eleanor Barnes vs. John K. Barnes


married 1st of March 1827 in the County of Richland and performed all the duties of a good wife until the 19th day of August, 1848 when her husband was guilty of criminal connection and adultery. She has by her husband three minor children being ages 6 years, 13 years and 16 years

Aug 1851 - Ellenor Winton vs. Albert Winton

married about 7 years ago in Richland County, living with said Albert as his wife until the 29th of September 1850, and has by him three children, all living. That said Albert is guilty of striking and being violent with the petitioner


May 1852 - Elizabeth Slocum vs. William T. Slocum

married 10 Jan 1850 in Richland County, and living with him until the 23rd day of March 1852, faithfully discharging the duties of a wife and mother, at which time she discovered the defendant has a wife living from a previous marriage, asks for a divorce, custody of her child and reasonable alimony


Aug 1852 - Martha Johnston vs. Nathan M. Johnston

married 5th of April 1838 in Martinburgh, Knox County, OH, that there are two minor children begotten upon the body of your petitioner by said Nathan Johnston, to wit, Mary Jane Johnston aged nine years and Octova Ellen Johnston aged 2 years.  Plaintiff says defendant has been in the habit of whipping her the past ten or twelve years, and has repeatedly knocked her down


Aug 1852 - Harriett L. Sweens vs. John L. H. Sweens

married in August 1845 in the County of Summit, living with said defendant until August 1850, when she was compelled to leave him in consequence of his gross abuse of her and to seek a living among strangers, supporting herself and infant child by her own industry.  In December 1851 the defendant John acknowledge he had done wrong and promised the petitioner she could live with him again.  The Plaintiff believing John, returned to the marriage until the 12th day of January 1852 when she discovered the said John was guilty of the crime of adultery.  Plaintiff says there is one daughter named Mary Jane who is now about 3 years old


Mar 1853 - Catharine Adey vs. Jackson Adey

married 2nd day of September 1848 in Richland County, living and cohabiting with her husband and conducting herself as a good and dutiful wife.  That on the 25th day of August 1849, he abandoned her without cause or provocation and has been gone for 3 year.  Said Catharine has born her husband one child named John Adey who is now a small boy


Sep 1853 - Lemuel Raymond vs. Mary Raymond

married 19th day of May 1850 in Huron County to Mary Nichols.  Your petitioner moved said Mary to Richland County where they lived as man and wife until the 1st of June 1850 when said Mary abandoned your petitioner and returned to Huron County.  The said Mary has been absent for 3 years


Mar 1848 - William Bradley vs. Emily Bradley

Petitioner states that on the 3rd day of December 1844 in the town of Mansfield in said Richland County, he was lawfully married to Emily Bradley, and they lived together as man and wife until about the first day of August 1845, when Emily abandoned your petitioner without any cause whatsoever.  Emily has set up housekeeping in Mansfield, only a few miles from your petitioners residence and publically and notoriously avowed her determination to continue to absent herself from said Petitioner and refuses to return to him.  Your petitioner states that the aforesaid marriage has produced a son, now living, whose name is Ezekiel Stokes Bradley who is about two years and two months. Petitioners asks that the marriage contract be dissolved and for the control exclusively of the said Ezekiel Stokes Bradley and any further relief the court may deem necessary


Apr 1848 - Elizabeth Hay vs William Hay

Petitioner says that in the month of October 1842 at the Township of Worthington in the said Richland County, she was legally married to one William Hay, that they lived together about one year and two months and that she has a son named  Jun Hays and he is living.  Petitioner says that in this time the said William Hay became a habitual drunkard and neglected his duties to her as a wife.  Elizabeth further states that the said William was guilty of extreme cruelty and threatened her with violence, that in fear for her life she left the home in the month of August 1844.  Plaintiff asks for divorce, custody of child and reasonable alimony.  Said William could no be found to be served


Jun 1848 - John B. Hills vs. Diantha Hills

Petitioner says that in October 1844 he was lawfully marred to one Diantha Parks, that he continued to live with her in the observance of all the duties of the marital relations until about the last of May in the year 1845 when Diantha left him and went to parts unknown and has been willfully absent for more that three years.  Petitioner asks that the marriage contract be dissolved and he be freed of any obligations toward said Diantha


Oct 1848 - Michael Lime vs. Lydia Lime

Petitioner states that he was legally married in the year 1842 in the said County and State to one Lydia Culver also of said County and State, that Michael and Lydia lived and cohabited together as man and wife for about three years, and he conducted himself as a good and faithful husband.  Petitioner further charges that after they had lived together the above time, the said Lydia abandoned him and has continued to absence herself for the period of three years past..  Petitioner asks for the marriage contract to be dissolved and he be freed from any obligations of the same and other relief the Court finds fit


Apr 1852 - Emery E. Bruce vs. Caroline Bruce

Petitioner says that he was married to Caroline in the month of May, 1842, in the State of Vermont, and that they lived together about one year when she willfully absented herself from the domicile of your petitioner.  Petitioner says he has been a good and faithful husband and discharged all his marital duties punctually and faithfully.  Caroline Bruce has been absent over three years, refuses to return to the home and currently lives in the State of Massachusetts.  Several depositions taken in Berkshire County, Massachusetts.  Petitioner asks for divorce and relief as the courts may grant


Sep 1853 - Orinda Culver vs. Nelson Culver

married in 1845 in Jefferson Township of Richland County

Petitioner asks to dissolve the marriage contract, between her and Nelson Culver, averring the following causes, 1st, extreme cruelty, 2nd gross neglect of duty, 3rd willful absence for more than three years.  Petitioner asks custody of a boy, about 4 years of age and the only child of this union.


Sep 1853 - George D. Lowry vs. Elizabeth Lowry

married in November 1844, living and cohabiting together for 6 years.  Petitioner says all this time Elizabeth was guilty of neglecting her duty as a wife and woman, and for committing adultery with one James Baker.  He further states that in the spring of 1850, Elizabeth left the domicile of the petitioner and went to the state of Calafornia.  Petitioner states he has in his possession a small boy about six years old, the issue of their marriage.


Sep 1853 - Mary Jane Thompson vs. James Thompson

married in November 1836 in Stark County and removed to Richland County in October of 1845, and about May of 1847, said defendant Thompson removed to and settled in Sandusky City in Erie County.  Petitioner asks for the marriage contract to be dissolved for reasons, 1st willful absence of more than three years, 2nd gross neglect of duty and 3rd for Adultery


Jan 1857 - Jemina M. Holmes vs. George G. Holmes

married on the 9th day of December 1847 in Richland County, that she was a faithful and obedient wife .  That said George Holmes has left Richland County and settled in Sacramento City, Sacramento County, California.  That petitioner prays for divorce, charging said George with willful absence for more than three years, with adultery and gross neglect of duty.


Feb 1857 - William G. Ward vs. Mary E. Ward

married 27 Aug 1853 in Licking County, Ohio to one Mary Ellen Johnson, that regardless of her married state, that said Mary E. Ward has left him and returned to Licking County, and on the 21st day of November 1853 at the house of Jackson Roe in the township of May Ann, County of Licking, did commit adultery with one David Martin.  The petitioner prays for divorce charging said Mary with gross neglect of duty and Adultery.


May 1857 - Mary Hahn vs. Henry Hahn

married the 14th day of October 1854 in Richland County, that she has been a faithful and obedient wife, that said Henry Hahn has been guilty of extreme cruelty toward her and has been absence from the Petitioner for a period over three years


Aug 1857 - Susanna Smail vs. James Smail

married about the 30th day of January in Richland County, had she has conducted herself as a faithful and obedient wife, that said James Smail has been absence from the said Petitioner for more than three years.  That the last known residence of said James Smail was at Donneville, Sierra County and State of California.  Petitioner asks for Divorce and alimony as the court shall see fit.


Nov 1857 - Andrew Glunt vs. Mary Glunt

married about the 7th day of December 1834 in the State of Pennsylvania, he was married to Mary Glunt of the City of Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.  That he is a resident of Richland County for over 10 years, That they lived together as man and wife until the 15th day of February 1854.  During the time they lived together they had the following children, viz, John Glunt age about 22 years, James Glunt aged about 20 years, David Glunt about 16 years, Mary Elizabeth Glunt aged about 12 years and Franklin Glunt aged about 5 years.  Petitioner says that owing to the prostitution of said defendant, he was compelled on the 15th day of February 1854 to leave her in the house of the petitioner in Mansfield, Ohio. That defendant has since returned to Indianapolis, Marion County Indiana with the two youngest children, Mary Elizabeth and Franklin Glunt.  That the Petitioner asks for divorce on grounds of Adultery and asks for custody of the two youngest children of their union.


Dec 1857 - William Broadwell vs. Sophronia Broadwell

on or about the first day of March 1853 at Freedonia, in the County of Chautague, State of New York, he was married to Sophronia Smith.  That he is a resident of Richland County for more than one year, That he has an issue of said marriage, one son, Harmon S. Broadwell, now living and about the age of three years. Petitioner says on or about the 20th day of September 1856, in the City of Cleveland, in said state, Sophronia did commit adultery with one Isaiah Abrahams, that Defendant now lives at Lowellville in the County of Mahoning, State of Ohio.  Petitioner asks for divorce from said Sophronia and custody of said Harmon S. Broadwell


Feb 1858 - Mary Ann Lindsey vs. John Lindsey

Deposition of H. A. Busell & Marvin Miller, that John Lindsey presented himself as a practicing physician, saying that his wife Mary Ann Lindsey was deceased, that said John Lindsey did propose and marry Maria Busell, that this occurred in Shiawasse County, Michigan.  That said Marie has had a child that said John Lindsey says is his child


Mar 1858 - Catharine Shaffer vs. Rober D. Shaffer

married 19 Mar 1855 in Mansfield  Ohio, that the Petitioner was a faithful and obedient wife.  That prior to the marriage this petitioner had a child, Robert Shaffer, born, who is now three years of  age and of how the said Robert D. Shaffer is and was the father and who by virtue of said marriage and operation of law became legitimated.  Petitioner says defendant has been wilfully absent for more than three years.  Petitioner asks for custody of the child and alimony


Jul 1858 - Jane Kiner vs. Jacob Kiner

married on or about the 22nd day of December, 1844, at the county of Wyandott and State of Ohio. That she has been a resident of Richland County for the year last past.  Petitioner say the defendant Jacob Kiner has disregarded his marital duties and is guilty of habitual drunkenness for more that three years.  That there are three children from the marriage, to wit, Mary Kiner, nine years old, John Kiner six years old and Phillip Kiner nine months old..  Petitioner asks for custody of the three children, Mary, John and Phillip, and further relief as in Equity and good conscience she is entitled to.


Jul 1858 - Anna E. McMunn vs William H McMunn

married on the 15th day of February 1855 at Plymouth, in the County of Richland, that she had while living with the said William the following children, the fruits of said marriage, to wit, Eldorado McMunn aged two years and eight months and George McMunn, aged one year, and that on or about the 15th day of June 1858 the said William H. McMunn was guilty of extreme cruelty toward the petitioner.  Petitioner ask for a divorce, restoration of her maiden name and custody of the children and other relief and equity that may be required.  At the time of the filing, defendant was living in Huron County


Aug 1858 - John Bess vs. Polly Bess

married the 15th day of September, 1834, at Steuben County in the State of New York.  Petitioner is a bona fide resident of Richland County, State of Ohio.  Petitioner says defendant Polly Bess has disregarded her duties as a wife and has been wilfully absent for more than six years.  Note from sheriff says that after making diligent search the within named Polly could not be found in the county


Oct 1858 - Almira Johnston vs. Frank Johnston

married the 14th day of July 1858 in the County of Richland, that said Almira has been a good, faithful and obedient wife to said Frank until the 15th day of July 1858 when said Frank, without good cause, wilfully abandoned her, and is guilty of gross neglect of duty.  That said Frank is entirely negligent and refused to support and maintain the Petitioner, and refused to recognize your petitioner as his wife.  Petitioner says that on the 9th day of September 1858, the said Frank did visit a house of ill fame kept by Mrs. Lovely in the City of Cleveland.  Petitioner Almira Johnston asks for divorce for gross neglect of duty and adultery


Oct 1858 - Jane Parker vs. John Parker

Petition for divorce and alimony, said Jane Parker is a bona fide resident of the County of Richland, State of Ohio, married on the 24th day of February 1842 at Cadis in the county of Harrison in the State of Ohio.  Petitioner says she has been a true and faithful wife to said John Parker and that she had, while living with the said John Parker the following children, to wit, Gersham Parker, aged thirteen years, and Margaret Ann Parker aged five years.  That on or about the first day of March 1857, the defendant was guilty of extreme cruelty by beating and striking your petitioner.  That said defendant is also guilty of habitual drunkenness for the three years past

married. Petitioner asks for custody of children, restoration of maiden name to Jane Simpson, real estate in Worthington Township and Alimony. (Case describes household furnishings and property bought with money of Jane Parker in Worthington township, plus several pages of dispositions as the drunkenness of John Parker)


Dec 1858 - Lydia Mawhirter vs. William Mawhirter

married on the 25th day of August 1848 in Richland County.  That the issue of said marriage has been born the following children, William Mawhirter born March 16th 1849 and Hamden Bartley Mawhirter born Dec 21 1850, Petitioner Lydia Mawhirter says defendant William Mawhirter, whereabouts unknown, has been wilfully absent for more than eight years, and asks for reasonable alimony, and for the care and custody of her children William Mawhirter, Jr. and Hamden Bartley Mawhirter


Dec 1858 - Harriet E. Birch vs. James Birch

Petitioner says that on the 17th day of October 1851 at the County of Jackson and State of Michigan, she was married to the Defendant James Birch.  Said Harriet has in all respects conducted herself as a good wife should. That said James rejects his marital duties toward your petitioner, has been guilty of adultery with different persons unknown to petitioner, contracted a venereal disease and gave it to her.  That the said James Birch has been guilty of extreme cruelty without any provocation on her part and has beat and struck her.  Petitioner asks to be restored her maiden name of Harriet E. Craig, and for alimony and such other equity and goods


Jan 1859 - John Wilcox vs. Margaret Wilcox

Petitioner says that on the 4th day of March 1828 in the City of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania he was married to one Margaret Hills, that there have been six children of this marriage, to wit, Margaret and Sarah Wilcox of full age over 18years, Edward and William Wilcox of full age of twenty-one and up, George Wilcox aged 14 and John Wilcox aged 12.  Petitioner states that Margaret Wilcox, now residing in the City of New York and State of New York has been willfully absent for more than three years past and asks for divorce from said Margaret and for such other and further relief the Court shall find proper


Jan 1859 - Samuel Henry Mater vs. Mary Ann Mater


Petitioner says that on 15th day of December 1849 at Mechanicsburg, in the County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania he married one Mary Ann Beistline of North Middletown, County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania and that he had while living with the said Mary Ann Mater the following children, Sarah Jane Mater aged 7 years and Margaret Elisabeth Mater aged 4 years.  The petitioner says on the 12th day of June 1856 at the house of James McGuire in the town of Kingston and County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania said Mary Ann Mater did commit adultery with one William F. Munay, and further states that on the 1st day of July 1856 in a wheat field belonging to John Riggle in the County of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania commit adultery with one David Sponsler.  Said Mary Ann is now believed to be an abandoned prostitute and her residence is unknown.  Petitioner asks for divorce from said Mary Ann and custody and other relief the Court shall find proper

Feb 1859 - Barbary Files vs. Allen G. Files

Petitioner says that on the 4th day of July 1850 at the Village of Lexington, County of Richland and State of Ohio she was married to one Allen G. Files, that she has conducted herself toward the said Allen G. Files as a faithful and obedient wife, yet said Plaintiff says that said defendant disregarding his duties as a husband has been willfully absent for the petitioner for more than three years last past.  Your petitioner further says that the said Allen G. Files is not a resident of this County and she has no knowledge of where he is or resides.  Petitioner says while living with the defendant she had the following children, to wit, Mary Files about 6 years and Ann M. Files about 4 years, and the maiden name of your petitioner was Barbary Strausbaugh.  She asks for the custody of said children and such other relief as the nature of her case and equity may require


Apr 1859 - Elisabeth Waters vs. Joseph Waters

Petitioner says that in October 1850 at Jefferson Township in the said County of Richland and State of Ohio, she was married to one Joseph Waters, and that she has since conducted herself toward said Joseph Waters as a faithful and obedient wife, and says the defendant, disregarding his duties as a husband has been willfully absent for the sum of more than three years last, without any cause or justification.  Petitioner states about the month of December 1856 at the City of Columbus in the State of Ohio the said Joseph Waters did commit adultery with one Nancy Viers and removed to the County of Tuscarawas in said State and continues to live with the said Nancy in a state of adultery for several months thereafter.  Petitioner ask to be restored to her maiden name of Elisabeth Ball and for such other and further relief the nature of her case and equity may require


Sept 1859 - Mary Ann Miller vs. John Miller

Petitioner says that in August 1855, in the County of Monigahn in Ireland, she was married to one John Miller, and has since conducted herself as a faithful and obedient wife, and that the defendant, with out just cause, has been willfully absent for the three years past without cause or justification.  Plaintiff asks for a divorce and other relief the courts feel she is entitled to.
