Casualties From The Big Celebration

source:  Richland Shield & Banner:  09 July 1892, Vol. LXXV, No. 7

Yesterday was a great day for accidents as the following chronicle will testify.

While firing a small cannon at his home on Spring Mill Street yesterday morning the 15-years-old son of John Reman was seriously injured by the explosion of his powder can.  The boy was severely burned about the face, head, neck and arms and his condition is considered dangerous.

Last night during the fireworks at Central park fire got into a box of skyrockets, making them explode simultaneously and fly in every direction.  Adam Hively, an old farmer living in Ashland County, John Boyce, an Erie section hand, Aaron Beachler, of 129 East Fourth Street, and the 7-years-old daughter of Mike Weil were injured.  They were carried into Caldwell & Bloor's drug store, which was converted into a hospital for the time being.  Physicians were called and examined the wounds.  It was found that Mr. Hively's left leg was badly broken below the knee and the physician, Dr. J.H. Craig, thinks the leg will have to be amputated, as the bone seems to be thoroughly splintered.  Mr. Hively is lying in the Central house, on East Third Street.

Boyce's injuries were about the face.  He was taken to Dr. J.S. Hedges' office, where he had his injuries dressed.  His wound was a horrible one, too, as one of the rockets tore away his left cheek, exposing the jaw bone.  The doctors stitched the wound.

The Weil girl was examined by Dr. T.L. Hickman, who found the left foot severely crushed, the nails of the toes being loosened.  She was taken to the home of relatives in the north part of the city.

Beacher's wounds were serious, but slight compared with those of the other unfortunates.  A deep and long gash was cut in his left leg below the knee.

While walking down Main Street last evening Ed. Massa was struck in the neck by the ball from a Roman candle and badly burned.  Consequently Ed. is nursing a sore neck today.

Some one threw a "nigger chaser" into a crowd of young ladies in front of Maxwell's store on Main Street last night and in trying to ward it off with his hand, Fred Norris received severe burns.

One of the heavy poles used to support the balloon while they were filling it with hot air fell, striking a 12-year-old son of John Elliott, who resides on West Johns Street, and breaking his right arm.  The boy was taken home in a cab and received proper medical attention.

During the evening some one threw a large fire cracker amongst a crowd of women.  One of the pieces of the explosive struck Mrs. S.E. Jenner in the face, cutting quite a gash.

Probably the most serious accident of the day occurred about 5 o'clock last evening.  At that time Winfield Kirby, a young man living at Fredericktown (OH), was attracted into a North Main Street saloon by the noise of a fight.  As he entered the door some one threw a cannon fire cracker on the floor.  One of the pieces of the cracker flew into Mr. Kirby's left eye.  He called on Dr. Irwin, who discovered that the eye was destroyed.  Mr. Kirby has many friends, in this city who deeply sympathize with him.

Last night during the fire works a young man named Gallagher attempted to drive a blind horse through the crowd with the usual result -- a young woman, from Shelby was thrown down, trampled upon by the horse and run over by the buggy.  The injuries of the lady were found to be trivial, but a score of willing hands pulled the fool out of the buggy and took him to the city prison.

A young man named Sugars, of Wooster (OH), had an eye seriously injured by the explosion of a blank cartridge yesterday.  Dr. Hedges says the young man will not lose the eye sight.

Yesterday noon John McCue, aged 12, while watching the parade from a tree in his yard on West Johns Street, fell and broke his left arm at the elbow.  Dr. Race reduced the fracture.

John Disbro, of Newville, while in Central Park yesterday, had his left leg broken below the knee by the explosion of a shell.  The wound is a very dangerous one, as the bone is split in several places.  Mr. Disbro was taken home this morning.

A cannon cracker exploded in the face of Floyd, the 12-years-old son of Joseph Weltmer, yesterday afternoon, burning both eyes in a bad manner.  The boy's face was so badly swollen before Dr. Baughman reached him that it was impossible to determine the extent of his injuries.  It is possible that the sight of the right eye may be destroyed or permanently impaired.

While standing in front of the Great Eastern clothing store, Harry Brumbaugh, one of the clerks, was severely burned about the face by a large fire cracker.
