Oberlin, Harry G. -- Bellville. Harry G., son of Mr. and Mrs. J.V. Oberlin, died early Monday morning, aged 1 year, 3 months and 20 days, and the funeral service was held at the house Tuesday at 1½ o'clock, conducted by Rev. W.W. Anderson, Rev. B.O. Squier assisting. Little Harry had been sick for some time, and yet on Sunday hopes of his recovery were entertained. But as the night fled away his quiet eyelids closed. Oberlin, J.V. -- Bellville. J.V. Oberlin, aged 52 years, sustained a stroke of apoplexy on Tuesday morning, which resulted in his death a few hours later. He had arisen in seemingly good health, when suddenly he complained of an awful pain in his head. He soon became unconscious and remained so, except for brief intervals, until his death. Doctors Kelly and Stofer were summoned but their efforts for relief were vain. Mr. Oberlin has long been one of our best citizens, one who was noted for his kind and generous disposition, and who was respected and esteemed by all. He leaves a wife and eight children. His oldest son, Walter, is married and lives in Mansfield, where he is employed in the Baxter Stove Works. His daughter, Fannie, was married two weeks ago to Jacob Snyder of Shaucks. The funeral took place on Thursday at 2 p.m. from St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The services were conducted by Rev. Barnett. Oberlin, T.W. & wife -- Rites set for crash victims -- Bodies of Dr. and Mrs. Oberlin to be brought it to Mansfield for burial rites -- The bodies of Dr. and Mrs. T. W. Oberlin, former Mansfielders who were killed in a traffic accident yesterday near Hammond, Indiana, are due to arrive in Mansfield Thursday night for burial at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Mansfield cemetery. They will be taken to the Finefrock Funeral Home until time for the services which will be in the mausoleum in the cemetery. Reverend David N. Roller, a pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, will officiate. Services will be conducted Thursday afternoon in the Presbyterian Church in Hammond. Dr. and Mrs. Oberlin were killed shortly after they left home for a Florida vacation. They were natives of Mansfield , leaving here at 42 years ago. Surviving Dr. Oberlin are a daughter, Katherine Oberlin, and a brother, Arthur, Harrisburg , Pennsylvania . Oberlin, Samuel -- Samuel Oberlin died at his home north of Bellville, Monday afternoon, after an illness of Bright's disease, for some months past, aged 71 years. The deceased was born in Stark County, Feb. 25, 1837, and has been a resident of Washington Township the past 41 years. Mr. Oberlin was twice married and is survived by his second wife and 13 children, two brothers and two sisters, W.K. Oberlin and Mrs. W.E. Ford, of Mansfield, B.F. O'Brien, Dennis -- Dennis O'Brien, a laboring man, died Saturday morning about 1 o'clock at his home on North Diamond Street as the result of an accident sustained by him Thursday while at work on East First Street under the supervision of Jack Scott. Mr. O'Brien was about 60 years of age and leaves a wife but no children. He was born in Ireland, but has been a resident of Mansfield for more than 30 years. He kept a boarding house. O'Brien, James -- James O'Brien of 48 Clark Street, New York City, was found dead in the woods (Dick Woods in the vincity of Shelby) with a bullet hole in his body near the heart, also another in the right arm. He was in a very bad shape, and almost at the start the doctor told him that he had but a short time to live. He called for a priest, and one was obtained for him last night. [Mansfield News: 09 May 1899] *The news report lists Liston L. Frady (of Indianapolis, IN) as another "hobo" injured in the event, and that he admitted to shooting O'Brien. Liston L. Brady told authorities that he had a brother named Charles C. Frady in the English Hotel at Indianapolis.

O'Brien, John -- John O'Brien, a well known stone-mason and contractor, of Pavonia, died Sunday morning. [Semi-Weekly News: 19 November 1897, Vol. 13, No. 93]

O'Brien, John -- John O'Brien, of Crestline, aged nineteen years, in company with another young man of the same place, boarded a freight train at that town Sunday morning and intended enjoying a free ride to Mansfield. At half past two o'clock, when but a short distance from this city, O'Brien, while sitting on the bumpers of a freight cars fell from his seat, under the wheels, and was horribly mangled, dying almost instantly. His remains were gathered up and carried to the depot, and afterward were taken to his home in Crestline. His parents arrived here and were allowed to take the body. The father of the deceased is a flagman at Crestline and is highly respected. But a few years ago a brother of O'Brien's was killed a short distance from Mansfield while stealing a ride. O'Dell, Hoyt -- Tuesday. The funeral of Mr. Hoyt O'Dell was held yesterday afternoon at his late residence on Spring Mill Street. Rev. Kemble officiated. Mr. O'Dell died last Friday at the age of 66 years. He had been confined to his home for several months with typhoid fever. He leaves a wife and three children. New London - In failing health for the past three years, George O'HARA, 75, a resident of New London all his life, died at his home late Saturday night. He is survived by a son, Lawrence; a daughter, Mrs. Cecil HAMMAN; and two grandchildren, all of New London. His wife preceded him in death six years ago. O'Hearn, Oda S. (Freehafer) -- Ashland -- Mrs. Oda S. O'Hearn, 78, of 1750 Troy Rd., died in the Horns Nursing Home in Wooster Tuesday morning. A native of Richland County, she was a member of the Clear Fork Presbyterian Church near Butler. Surviving are two sons, Kenneth of Beria [sic] and Richard of Wooster; and five grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Clear Fork Presbyterian Church where she will lie in state an hour prior to services. The Rev. George Sheets will officiate. O'Hearn, Willie -- Mrs. M. O'Hearn, of East Fourth street, is sadly unfortunate in the loss of her infant son, Willie, by falling into the water closet and smothered to death on Monday last. The child was 17 months old and the sadness of the event makes it peculiarly sorrowful to its widowed mother. ** Mrs. Mary O'Hearn was the daughter of John Curtin and widow of John Hearn. Ohl, Bert (aka: Bert Cowden) -- Shelby was considerably excited last evening with the news that Bert Ohl had met his death while alighting from a train at the crossing at Main Street. Ohl was about 22 years of age and was employed as a molder at the Shelby Tube Works. He, with several of his companions, had gone down to Shelby Junction at noon for a visit with friends. They spent the afternoon at a farm house near the junction, and boarded a freight train to return home. When the train reached Shelby it was running at the rate of about fifteen miles an hour. When Ohl stepped off, a heavy ulster he was wearing became entangled in the car step, and he was unable to extricate himself. The coat dragged him under the wheels and held him there, the entire train passing over his body. The remains were gathered up and taken to the undertaker and afterwards to his home, at which place the funeral will be held tomorrow. The young man's real name is Cowden, Ohl being the name of the man with whom he resided, and to whom he was indentured from the Ashland County Infirmary. Olcott, Charles -- Charles Olcot, aged 64 years, lost his life at Plymouth this morning through being run over by a B.&O. freight train. Olcott was 64 years of age and a resident of Richfield, Medina County. He and his wife were visiting their son, George Olcott, at Plymouth. The unfortunate man, who was quite deaf, was crossing the railroad track in the yards south of the depot. The accident happened at 8 o'clock a.m. and Olcott died at 12:30 this afternoon. Among other injuries the right leg was crushed from the hip to the ankle. It is supposed that the man also sustained internal injuries. George Olcott, son of the deceased, is foreman of Root Bros. establishment in Plymouth. the only people who witnessed the accident were the members of the train crew. Before his death Mr. Olcott rallied sufficiently so as to be able to converse with the members of his family. [Semi-Weekly News: 20 July 1897, Vol. 13, No. 58]

Oldfield, Elmina (Phelps) -- Mrs. Elmina Oldfield, the subject of this sketch, was the daughter of David and Anna Phelps, born May the 26th., 1805, in the town of Hebron, county of Grafton, and state of N.H. She came with her parents to Ohio in the summer of 1815. Moved in a wagon and arrived at the place of destination, Aug. 7th., 1815. They came through Wooster and at that time there was not a single dwelling between there and the place they settled, four miles northwest of Bellville, on a farm familiarly known as the Marshall farm. She was married on the 21st. day of December 1824, to Richard Oldfield, who was born in the town of Minisink, county of Orange, and state of New York. From this union there were twelve children -- seven girls and five boys, four of her children having preceded her to the beyond. Mr. Oldfield died Nov. 7th., 1872, aged 71 years, 5 months and 23 days. She died Apr. 7th., 1891, aged 85 years, 10 months and 11 days. She leaves eight children, 30 grand and 42 great grandchildren to mourn her loss. Thus ends the life of another pioneer. Hers was an industrious and useful one. She had a vivid memory, and could relate many interesting incidents connected with her journey from New Hampshire here and all along the path of life. She often related their first move after their marriage. They carried all their household goods and drove the cow. So that her experience took in nearly all phases of life. On April 9th., the funeral took place from the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. A.B. Leedy. The services were held in the Universalist church in Bellville conducted by the Rev. H.L. Canfield. The bereaved have the heartfelt sympathy of their friends and neighbors in this season of sorrow. The life of their departed one is well worthy of emulation. Oldfield, J. Taylor -- SUDDEN DEATH -- Mr. J. Taylor Oldfield, aged 41 years, died this morning (Thursday, Oct. 17th.) of inflammation of the stomach, at the residence of his father. Two weeks ago he left his home and family at Nashville, Michigan, to visit his father, who has been ill for some time. He was in town on last Saturday. His family were telegraphed to on Wednesday morning. He leaves a wife and four children, and a large circle of friends to mourn his loss. Oldfield, Jonathan -- Died, at his residence in Elmwood, Peoria County, Ill., October 24th., 1874, of acute disease cause by a severe cold, Jonathan Oldfield, aged 86 years, 1 months and 17 days. His funeral was numerously attended, and an able and appropriate discourse was delivered on the occasion by Rev. Mr. Faulkner. He was confined to his house about twenty-four days, during which time he prayed for death's relief for the acute and constant pain which he suffered, taking no food the last 17 days of his life. Mr. Oldfield was born in Orange county, N.Y., June 7, 1788; came with his father to Chillicothe, Ohio, in 1803, and in march, 1808, in company with James and Thomas McCluer, came to the present site of Bellville, cutting their own road through the dense forest, from Fredericktown. James made his selection, and started to Canton to "enter his land"; Jonathan and Thomas commenced clearing, and with the help of Indians erected a cabin, into which the McCluer family moved the following spring. This was the first break of the wilderness of Richland County. Andrew Coffinberry was the first Justice of the Peace in Richland County, and the first marriage solemnized by him was that of Jonathan Oldfield and Elizabeth McClure, which took place February 11th., 1812, and was the first marriage in the present bounds of said county. Soon after his marriage he moved into his "cabin" on the northeast quarter of section 22, and resided in this vicinity until five or six years since, at which time he removed to his last place of residence. Mr. Oldfield was a soldier, and did honorable service in the war of 1812, for which he since obtained a land warrant. After the decease of his first wife, which occurred August 4th., 1824, Mr.. Oldfield married Miss Nancy Fidler, who died November 5th., 1839, after which he married Miss Esther Andrews, who survived him; by all of said wives he was the father of fifteen children, ten of whom are yet living, only one (Abner) in Richland County. In his family relations, Mr. Oldfield was affectionate and kind; in all his private walks, he was unassuming, strictly temperate, moral, and scrupulously honest and upright in his dealings with his fellow man; his enemies are not known; his friends are many. He was one of the organizers of the first M.E. church in his vicinity, and was for many years its honorable class-leader, and a zealous and consistent member thereof to the end of his life; his faith in the Christian religion at his final dissolution enabled him to say -- "welcome death". Oldfield, Lucy (Palmer) -- Died, at the residence of her son in Atlanta, Ga., October 15th., 1886, in the 69th. year of her age, Mrs. Lucy Palmer Oldfield, daughter of Geo. W. Palmer, one of the pioneers of Richland County. She was raised on the old homestead, one and one half miles south of Bellville and commenced her life work as a teacher near Ankenytown and continued teaching and studying until her marriage in 1841. After the death of her husband, Doctor Oldfield, in 1850, to better prepare herself for the duties of a teacher she completed a course of study at the Wesleyan Female Univ. at Delaware and from that time took a high stand as an instructor, being widely known as a very accomplished and successful teacher. She became a member of the Methodist Church at a very early age and was an earnest and faithful in her church work as in her school. The faith which served her so well to live by did not fail her in the hour of death, and we have full assurance that she has gone to a blessed reward. -- [Bellville Star: 21 October 1886, Vol. 10, No. 4]

Oldfield, Mary Ann (Tinkey) -- Mrs. Abner Oldfield, aged 70 years and 15 days, died Thursday at 8 a.m., after a long and tedious illness from the direct effects of having the left arm amputated several months ago. The member had been accidentally fractured necessitating a operation by reason of the bones having become diseased before the lady realized the condition of the injury. The funeral will take place Saturday at 10 a.m., from the family home, south of Bellville, and Rev. J.W. Boyer will conduct the services at the Presbyterian church, after which the remains will be laid to rest in the Bellville Cemetery. -- [Bellville Messenger: 03 January 1902, Vol. X, No. 1]

Oldfield, Mary Ann (Tinkey) -- Mary Ann Tinkey was born in Washington County, Pa., November 17th., 1831, and was united in marriage to Abner Oldfield, August 28th., 1855. To this marriage was born four children, two sons and two daughters -- the sons dying in early life. The daughters, who with the husband survive, are: Mrs. Mel Paste and Mrs. D.M. Teeter. Deceased has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church for upward of 60 years and the funeral was conducted by her pastor, Rev. J.W. Boyer, Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Bellville Presbyterian church. Interment was made in the Bellville Cemetery. The direct cause of her death, which occurred at the age of 70 years, one month and 15 days, dates from an accidental fall, last spring, which resulted in the fracture of her left forearm. Not being aware of the condition of the member, nothing was done until an operation was found to be necessary, August 27th., when the arm was cut open. This did not bring relief, and another operation was performed, and the injured member amputated above the fracture, the bones of which having become diseased. She suffered considerable pain, and being debilitated to a great extent, nothing could be done to restore her to health, and death ensued January 2nd., 1902. -- [Bellville Messenger: 10 January 1902, Vol. X, No. 2]

Oldfield, Mary E. (Drew) -- Died at her residence in Mitchellville, Iowa, March 15th, of paralysis, Mrs. David P. Oldfield. Mary E. Drew was born in Belmont, Maine, Oct. 30th., 1820, moved with her parents to Ohio in 1840, where she was a resident of Bellville and vicinity through her earlier years. She was married to D.P. Oldfield in 1853 and moved to Iowa in 1856 when that part of the western world was yet in its infancy, and was one of the noble pioneer women who braved the vicissitudes of early days on the then bleak and desolate looking prairies of Iowa, having gained a competency, she with her husband left the farm and have lived in Mitchellville for several years, and has been loved and respected up a large circle of relatives and friends. An affectionate wife and a loving mother has gone to reap her reward, where there is no more sorrow, neither is there any more pain. The remains were followed to the grave by a large concourse of relatives and friends and was laid in the beautiful cemetery at Mitchellville there to await the final resurrection of the dead. -- [Bellville Star: 24 March 1887, Vol. 10, No. 26]

Oldfield, Missilda (Cowan) -- Word has been received of the sudden death from heart trouble of Mrs. Noah Oldfield, at Altoona, Iowa on March 10. Mrs. Oldfield will be remembered as Miss Missilda Cowan, the oldest of 13 children of Hugh and Drusilla Cowan, and at one time a schoolteacher in this vicinity. Richard Oldfield, whose obituary you briefly noticed last week, was born in Orange County, N.Y., May 14, 1801; came with his father to Ross County, Ohio, in 1803, and to the present site of Bellville in the Spring of 1810, and, at the time of his decease, was the earliest resident settler of Jefferson Twp. He manifested a lively interest in the welfare of the early settlers in this (then) wilderness, and contributed liberally from his limited means to their necessities, which is not yet forgotten by the few remaining participants of his generosity. He lived and died on the only farm he ever owned, which he occupied for over fifty years, and for many years was a consistent member of the Universalist Church, to the faith and doctrine of which he adhered to his death. In December, 1824, Mr. Oldfield married Almina Phelps, who, together with eight children survive him.

Olin, Nathaniel G. -- Nathaniel G. Olin, eldest son of G.A. and M.A. Olin, was born at Bellville, O., Feb. 18, 1870, and died Nov. 16, 1905, aged 34 years, 8 months and 28 days. On Dec. 6, 1903, he was united in marriage to Miss Laura B. Stuff by the Rev. J.N. Barnette. To this union two children were born, Harold G. and Addie E., aged 12 and 10 years respectively. About twelve years ago, Mr. Olin contracted pulmonary trouble which he bravely fought ever since. In the winter of 1900 he spent six months in Colorado and Mexico, hoping to get permanent relief, but in this he was disappointed. The greater part of his life was spent in the vicinity of Bellville, where he was well and favorably known. The large attendance of sympathizing friends and neighbors who were in attendance at the funeral service was an index of the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best. He was tenderly cared for by willing hands as long as the arm of flesh could serve him. A father, brother, wife and two children remain to mourn his departure. He was in Bellville on business in apparent good health, one week from the day before he died. It is our sad duty to record the death of our dear friend, Oliver G. Olin, who departed this life November 6th., 1872, aged 19 years, 2 months and 19 days. He was a member of the Senior Preparatory Class of Oberlin College, and a young man of rare attainments. Though his physical endurance was only ordinary, his mind was very energetic and clear, and his character pure. Soon after coming to this place he professed the religion of Jesus, and entered upon his Christian work with great earnestness, seeming very anxious that his unconverted classmates should follow his example. Upon being asked, after his conversion, whether he had any desire to return to the world again, he replied "No! I mean to press on to the high calling in Christ Jesus." But he is gone! -- cut down in the bloom of youth and removed to that heavenly home where a higher work awaits him. We loved him as though he were one of our own family. There was something so generous, so noble about him. We do not know what it was -- we cannot define it. He certainly had laid the foundation of an excellent Christian life. He was never satisfied with the views of others merely, but always penetrated the mystery, and saw things for himself. He was faithful to his God unto the last; and when the summons came, he "wrapped the drapery of his couch" around him and lay down to pleasant dreams.

Olin, Ruth Alena (Dean) -- Died -- Monday, Nov. 1st., 1886, at her late home two miles west of Bellville, Ruth Alena Olin, wife of J.S. Olin, in the 37th. year of her age. Again death has entered the home of J.S. Olin, and the STAR is called upon to chronicle the death of the wife and mother of the now lonely home. In the death of Mrs. Olin heaven has gained a bright spirit and earth has lost a sweet and earnest nature. Ruth Alena (Dean) Olin was born January 8th., 1850. She united with the Methodist Episcopal church in early life where she remained a member until her marriage with J.S. Olin when she united with the Lutheran church. She was united in marriage on March 25th., 1880, with J.S. Olin who with three small children mourn the death of the now sainted wife and mother. The funeral took place from her late home on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by a large number of their friends. The services were conducted by Rev. J.F. Sponseller of Lutheran church and Rev. Austin Philpot of the M.E. Church. The remains were placed in the Dorland vault to await the arrival of friends that did not reach in time for the funeral. Oliver, Mrs. J.T. -- Mrs. Oliver, wife of Capt. J.T. Oliver, departed this life Monday evening, August 25, 1879. Although a resident of this place but a short time, she had made many friends by her gentle manner and kindness of heart. A loving wife, a devoted mother, a Christian lady, she will be sadly missed in the home circle, of which she was the bright ornament, and her place in the social gatherings, where her bright smile was ever welcome, will be vacant. May the promises of Him who "tempers the wind to the shorn lamb", bring consolation to the hearts of the stricken husband and bereaved children. The remains were taken to Steubenville for interment. Onstine, Bay -- The many friends of Miss Bay Onstine, formerly of this city, will be pained to learn of her sad death at her home in Colfax, Wash. Miss Onstine formerly resided with her cousin, Miss Carrie Onstine, of East Third Street, the latter now a resident of Detroit. Miss Onstine was a member of the local high school. She left here two years ago to join her father in Colfax. Shortly after leaving this city, Miss Onstine's health began to fail. The decline continued until death claimed her Monday, Dec. 28. Opdyke, Stacy B. -- Stacy B. Opdyke was born on a farm in Kingwood Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, August 9, 1830. He departed this life Nov. 29, 1915, aged 85 years, 3 months and 20 days. His family originated in Holland and its genealogy dates back to the year 1261. Mr. Opdyke was of the eighth generation from the parent stock. The first representatives of the family came to America in the year 1536. The name was originally Op den Dycks. Mr. Opdyke was one of a family of seven children, two sisters and five brothers. All have now passed away but one brother, Mr. John Scott Opdyke, of Washington, D.C. At the age of six years Mr. Opdyke came with his parents to Ohio. They came from New Jersey by wagon, spending three weeks on the road. They took up their residence on a farm near Shiloh, Richland County. Here Mr. Opdyke grew to manhood, clearing off the land and farming. He received his education in the district school. In 1860 he made a trip to the Rocky Mountains in search of gold, but remained only a short time, returning to his home in Richland County. In 1861 he united in marriage with Miss Kate Baumgartner, after which they took up their residence upon the farm where they spent the remainder of their lives. They were blessed with two children, Lester and Mary, the latter of whom departed this life at the age of six years. In politics Mr. Opdyke was a republican, religiously he was a Universalist. He excelled as a farmer and was a student of books. He had accumulated quite a library, many of his books being well selected and of a high order. He spent all his spare moments reading. He believed in cultivating the intellect as well as the soil. He leaves behind him a record for industry, intelligence and integrity. His life is highly esteemed and commended by his neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held from his late home south of town, Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock, conducted by Rev. G.C. Ordway, Charles H. -- Died, August 4th., 1882, Charles H. Ordway, aged 36 years, 2 months and 9 days. He was born in Coshocton Co., Ohio, May 26th., 1846, and with his parents moved to Bellville in 1854, at the age of eight years. His youth and early manhood was spent among us. He completed his education in the Bellville High School, except a course in the Pittsburgh Commercial College. We can therefore bear witness to his uniform consciousness and upright deportment in every relation of life. He was married May 20th., 1872, to Miss Lavenia Good of Xenia, Ohio, by whom he had two children, a boy now 8 and a girl 6 years of age. In Oct. 1879 they moved to Cambridge City, Ind., where his health began to fail. He moved to Indianapolis, but failing health compelled his return to Ohio. He was with his wife's friends at Xenia, O., tell about seven weeks ago, when his sister, Mrs. J.W. Zent, visited him and brought him home that he might enjoy a visit among his relatives and friends in Bellville. Some 20 years ago he united with the M.E. Church and lived a devoted Christian life, till called by the Master "to come up higher". Orem, Harry -- Relatives here have received word of the death of Harry C. Orem, which occurred last night in a hospital at New York City. He was aged 41 years and was born in this city. He has been in New York City for a number of years and was a travelling salesman. He had been sick but a short time with pneumonia which was the cause of his death. He is survived by his mother, Mr. Catherine Orem of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Ed. Crouse, city, and Mrs. Harry Van Buskirk of Cincinnati. The body will be brought here for burial tomorrow. Orem, Zachariah -- Capt. Zachariah Orem died at Dayton, Wednesday at 4:30 o'clock. The deceased was 68 years of age and entered the service of his country from the state of Pennsylvania, serving four years and being Capt. of Company C, 260th. Pennsylvania Volunteers. He was formerly a resident of Mansfield and was well known here. He leaves a wife and daughter, who are residents of this city; a daughter, Mrs. Harry VanBuskirk, of Cincinnati, and a son, Harry Orem, of St. Louis. The remains of Capt. Long, pastor of the First Lutheran church will conduct the service. Mr. Orock is survived by his wife, two sons, A. Orock of this city; William J. Orock of Zelemple, Pa., two daughters, Mrs. H.B. Orr, Benjamin -- A brakeman on the Pittsburgh, Fort Wayne & Chicago Railroad, named Benjamin Orr was killed instantly on Saturday morning last, near Canton (OH). The cause of the accident was the breaking of a car wheel which threw the train off the track. Mr. Orr falling under a car, the wheel of which passed over him, and mutilating him horribly. Orwiler, Eli -- Died, February 28th., 1874, Eli Orwiler, aged 41 years, 7 months and 19 days. His last illness was long and severe. At times he rallied, inspiring the hope of his recovery. Then again, he fell back, until death ended his sufferings. He earnestly desired the favor of God, and sincerely sought the Savior, whom he professed as the redeemer of his soul. Calmly and believingly he made the solemn vow to be his forever. He leaves a sadly bereaved widow, and many friends to mourn over his departure from earth. Six children survive her, four sons and two daughters, Ed, Carey and Alvin, who reside here, and Harry, of Akron, and Mrs. Lynde and Mrs. Wrenn, also of Akron. For a number of years, Mr. Osbun was a minister of the Methodist church. He leaves a wife and a family of grown up sons and daughters. Funeral from the late residence Friday morning at 10 o'clock. Osbun, Freeman -- VETERAN REPLIES TO LAST ROLL CALL -- Freeman Osbun, Retired Mifflin Township Farmer Dies at His Home -- Freeman Osbun, aged 80 years, veteran of the Civil war and retired farmer, died yesterday morning at 5 o'clock at his home in Mifflin township, following an illness of only five weeks. He was born in Weller township, April 14, 1843, on a farm adjoining the one on which he passed away. With the exception of the years he was in the southland during the Civil war, he has always resided in that community. During the war he served with Co. D, 102nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, having enlisted for service in August 1862. After the conflict was over he returned to Richland county and settled down on the farm where he died. Jan. 17, 1872 he was married to Matilda Waldo, and three children were born of the marriage, all of whom survive. They are, Carl H. Osbun on the home farm, Mrs. Avery Hale, Mifflin township, and Park W. Osbun, Manhattan Beach, Cal. Also one brother Lew S. Osbun, Seattle, Wash., and two grandchildren. Mr. Osbun was a member of McLaughlin Post No. 131 G. A. R. Funeral services will be conducted at the family home in Mifflin township Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock, by Rev. H. W. Middleton. Osbun, Matilda J. -- Mrs. Matilda J. Osbun, wife of Freeman Osbun, died shortly after 3 o'clock last week Tuesday afternoon, at her home in Mifflin Township. Mrs. Osbun was in Mansfield during the day and was apparently in good health. On her return home she stated she was very tired and lay down on a lounge to rest. Later, it was discovered she had passed away while she was lying on the couch. She was almost 71 years of age, and is survived by her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Avery Hale, and two sons, Carl H. Osbun, at home, and Park W. Osbun, of Manhattan Beach, Cal. Mrs. Osbun was a former resident of Plymouth, her husband being associated with M.B. He came to this country 21 years ago and lived in New York City until 1883, when he came to Mansfield and has ever since followed his trade, that of shoemaker, at 57 North Adams Street. A farmer residing southeast of Butler in Worthington township, died last night after a brief illness with pneumonia. For many years he has been a resident of that locality and was always in great demand as a musician at social gatherings throughout the township. He was born in Monroe township, near Lucas, and has always been a Richland County resident. Oswalt, Ella -- SUCCUMBS AT 82 -- Death Takes Mrs. Ella Oswalt at General Hospital -- Mrs. Ella Oswalt, 82, of 349 West Third street, died at Mansfield General hospital Monday after an extended illness. The daughter of Milo and Mary Fackler Starr, Mrs. Oswalt was born in Butler township July 26, 1863, and had spent all her life in Richland county. Her husband, William Oswalt, died in 1904. She was a member of the Franklin Methodist church, Angelus chapter Order of Eastern Star at Shiloh, the WCTU and the American Legion auxiliary, Mansfield. Surviving are four sons, Howard, with whom she made her home, Ralph K., Glenn and Chester of Weller Township; 18 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Waldo Starr of Santa Paula, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Dora Hoerning of Butte, Mont., and several nieces and nephews. Brief services will be held at the Finefrock funeral home Thursday at 2:30 p. m., and additional services at 3:30 p. m. at the Franklin Methodist church with Rev. Floyd Eckert officiating. Oswalt, James -- Epworth. James Oswalt died at his home Thursday morning, aged nearly 75 years. He has been in feeble health the past year and was only waiting patiently to be called to the better world where his good wife and one son were "watching and waiting" for him. He was a good man, and this thought leaves comfort in the hearts of his children who are left behind. His daughter from Paulding County was here to attend the funeral. His four sons who live here and his two grandsons, from Davenport, Wash., were pallbearers. The Rev. Oswalt, Jennie Davidson - Mansfield. Mrs. Jennie Davidson Oswalt of Weller Township died at the Mansfield General Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after a long illness. She was born on March 28, 1865, in Bedford County, Pa. Most of her life had been spent in Richland County in the vicinity of Weller Township. Survivors are four children, Carl Oawalt, Mrs. Samuel Widders, Mrs. Claud Clingan and Mrs. Linna Hershey of Richland County; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. MARY OSWALT, 82 – Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Oswalt, aged 82, who passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Zelna Kershner, in Perrysville, early Sunday morning, were held Tuesday afternoon from the Perrysville Presbyterian church, with Rev. George M. Schrack, officiating. A daughter of Barnett and Eliza (Wiermah) Homer, Mrs. Oswalt was born in Holmes county on November 28, 1855. She had been a resident of Perrysville for the past twenty years. Her husband, John Oswalt, passed away in 1910. Mrs. Oswalt was a member of the Perrysville Presbyterian church. Surviving are a son, Homer, of Lucas; three daughters, Mrs. Kershner, Mrs. Harry Zody, of near Perrysville, and Mrs. Floyd grandchildren [sic] and 32 great-grandchildren. Mr. Oswalt was a lifelong active member of Franklin United Methodist Church, A charter member of the Farm Bureau, and a member of the Federal Land Bank and Production Credit. He is survived by seven sons, Myles of Arkansas, Lee of Chesrown Road, Trent of Ashland, Vance of Apple Creek, Dale and Earl both of Mansfield, and Wade of Van Nuys, Calif., five daughters, Mrs. Leo (Retha) Fair of Ashland, Mrs. William (Kit) Crane and Mrs. William Williams, both of Sand Diego Calif., and Mrs. Charles (Ruby) Bookwalter and Mrs. Forest (Treva) Smith both of Mansfield: 37 grandchildren, and 33 great grand children. Oswalt, Roe H. -- TAKEN BY DEATH - Tappan Stove Firm Inspector Dies in Hospital at Age of 43 Years - Roe H. Oswalt, 43, of 237 West First street, died in Mansfield General hospital early today following an illness of two weeks. He was born in Weller township, July 29, 1892, but had been a resident of Mansfield for 27 years. Employed by the Tappan Stove company as chief inspector for many years, he was president of company benefit association at the time of his death. Mr. Oswalt was an active member of the Central M.E. church, having served as superintendent of the adult department of the Sunday school for a number of years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War, and was a member of the McVey post, American Legion. He also was a member of the Venus Lodge, 152, F. & A.M.; vice chancellor of Mansfield lodge, 26, Knights of Pythias, and the Mansfield aerie of Eagles. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Alice Ferguson Oswalt; two daughters, Jean and Margaret; a son David, all of home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David W. Oswalt, and one brother, Edison E. Oswalt, all of Mansfield. The body was removed to the Finefrock mortuary, but will be taken to the late home Saturday evening where friends may call until noon on Monday. Services will be held at the Finefrock mortuary at 2 p.m. Monday in charge of Rev. M.E. Hunt and officers of the American Legion. Burial will be in the Franklin cemetery. Ott, Marie M. -- Marie M. Ott, oldest daughter of Peter Ott and wife, aged 18 years and 6 months, died last Thursday, and was buried on Saturday. This was their crippled child who has borne her suffering patiently for a long time. None knew her but to love her. Her funeral was attended by a large number of sympathizing friends. Ottinger, Joseph -- Joseph Ottinger died early Friday morning at the residence of his son, S.F. Ottinger, on Park Ave. East. He was born Jan. 27, 1819 in Bedford county, Pa., and came to Ohio in 1824. Three children survive him, Mrs. Ottinger having died Oct. 14, 1886. Rev. D.J. Ottinger, Josiah -- IN MEMORIAM -- Died, of paralysis, at the residence of his son, in Mansfield, Ohio, July 12th., 1889, Josiah Ottinger, aged 70 years, 5 months and 18 days. Josiah Ottinger was born in Bedford County, Pennsylvania, January 24th., 1819. He emigrated with his parents to Stark County, Ohio, about the year 1824, where he was reared and was married to Eliza Garrett, on the 3rd. day of March 1844. Of this union five children were born to them, viz.: Rebecca, who died in infancy; Samuel F. Ottinger, ex-County Clerk of Richland County, Ohio; George W., who died April 20th., 1868; Mrs. Alice Pitts, of Lucas, Ohio, and James M. Ottinger, now a deputy clerk in the Probate Court of this county. About the year 1860 he removed with his family from Stark to Richland County and located in Worthington Township, where he lived until the 9th. of May, 1889, when he went to live with his son, Samuel F., at Mansfield, Ohio, where he resided at the time of his death. On the 14th. day of October, 1886, the wife of his youth was suddenly called to the spirit world, thus leaving him alone, his three surviving children having left home and engaged in affairs of their own. He prevailed on his son, James M., to remove to the old homestead October 18th., 1886. He remained at his own home with his son, James M., until April 30th., 1889, when the son removed to the city of Mansfield. In the evening of the last named date he was seized with a violent attack of paralysis, which totally disabled his left side and rendered him helpless. On the 9th. day of May, 1889, he was removed to the residence of his son, Samuel F. Ottinger, as before stated, where all the care, attention and comfort possible and medical attendance was rendered him until death ended his sufferings and God called him to that "better world" -- where trials, difficulties, sorrow and sufferings are not known. He was by trade a cooper, but in recent years had practically abandoned his trade for the more healthful occupation of farming. He leaves three children, one brother and one sister, and a host of friends and neighbors to mourn his loss. Mr. Ottinger was a loving husband, a kind father and an exemplary man in all the walks of his life. He possessed the characteristics of honesty, sobriety, morality and piety and practiced the same in his every day life. About thirty-five years ago he united with the Methodist Episcopal church and was for a number of years an active member, but in the later years of life, no church of his chosen faith being within quite a distance from his home, he was unable to attend regular services, but did attend the services and worship of churches of other denominations accessible to him, chiefly the German Baptist churches located at North Liberty and Ankenytown. Never, since his connection with the Methodist Episcopal church, did he ever waver from his faith in God, the Father and Jesus Christ the son and Savior of the world. On the morning of July 13th., 1889, in obedience to his request in his lifetime and by the assistance of kind friends and neighbors we left his late residence at Mansfield and took the journey overland to the village of Independence, a distance of 14 miles, and after appropriate services at the Evangelical church of that village by the Rev. D.J. Meese, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, of Mansfield, O., who was kindly and ably assisted by the choir of the Evangelical church, and with the assistance of his former kind and sympathetic friends and neighbors, we laid his mortal remains in the beautiful little city of the dead overlooking the village, beside the grave of his wife, who had traveled the journey of life with him for 42 years and whom he had loved so well, and also beside the son, who in his youth had preceded his good father and mother to the great beyond, more than 20 years ago. Ottinger, Mrs. Josiah -- Independence. Mrs. Josiah Ottinger, mother of S.F. Ottinger, our County Clerk, died at 4 o'clock of last Thursday of strangulated hernia. She had only been sick since the Sunday before. Her funeral took place at 11 o'clock from the residence south of town, on Saturday, and was preached by Rev. Henry Keller, of Knox County. Otto Jr., of New York City; one sister, Miss Helen Otto of Battle Creek, and a number of cousins in Mansfield. Graveside services will be held in the Mansfield Cemetery at 3 p.m. Monday, in charge of the Rev. James C. Mead, pastor of the First Congregational Church. Ousley, Claude – Elder Claude Ousley, 85, of 22 Maple Ave. died Monday at Hillside Acres Nursing Home in Willard after a long illness. Mr. Ousley was a member and elder of Little Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church in Plymouth. He retired from the Newark Air Force Base in Newark, Ohio. Owings, Susan -- Mrs. Susan Owings, wife of Wm. Owings of Shelby, died Monday week from a stroke of paralysis. The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon. [Mansfield Herald: 18 March 1886]

Owings, Thomas -- Mrs. Verda Owings of E. Third Street has returned home after spending ten weeks at E. Liverpool at the home of her sister-in-law, Mrs. Will Kinkade where her mother-in-law, Mrs. Thomas Owings, has been ill for about a year, having had a stroke of paralysis. Oyster, John -- Bellville. John Oyster died at his late home in this township on Saturday last, after a short sickness. He was born in Columbiana Co., Ohio, Dec. 24, 1817. At the time of his death he was aged 67 years. 2 months and 4 days. Coming to this vicinity when quite a boy, he shared in the hard work of cleaning up the land and continued to work until a few weeks before his death. To him and his wife were born eleven children. His widow, one son and four daughters survive him. The children were all at the funeral which took place Monday 2nd. inst. at the Presbyterian Church. Two of the daughters came from their homes in Mich. Mr. Oyster was, for a number of years, a member of the U.B. church, but his last church membership was in the Evan. church. His widow has been very sick, and not being able to attend the funeral service, brief exercises were held at her home by Rev. Anderson and Rev. Shrader. Ozier, Fred S. -- Fred S. Ozier , ex resident of Mansfield , dies in West -- Fred S. Ozier, 82, of Akron, member of a pioneer Richland County family and widely known in hotel interests who left Mansfield 30 years ago, died Sunday in Los Angeles where he had been spending the winter. The body will be sent here to the Jones Memorial where funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon. Detailed arrangements are incomplete. Mr. was there was born in Shiloh , and spent his entire boyhood in this vicinity, excepting five years during which the entire family lived in California . He operated a chain of cigar stores connected with hotels, and was an active worker in Republican political circles. He operated a cigar store at the old Vonhof hotel here. Charles E. Ozier, his cousin operated the hotel. His father, Nelson Ozier, was a former postmaster in Mansfield . He moved to Akron in 1910 where he operated the Howe Hotel until 1931. He was also interested in the real-estate business. He is survived by his wife, Hattie, in Los Angeles ; two sons Robert and Stanley of Akron; and one daughter, Mrs. Raymond Wheeler of Palo Alto , Calif. . Mr. Ozier was an uncle by marriage of Harry D. Lowrey, 125 Parkwood Boulevard , Mansfield . Submitted by Ann. [no source cited]

Ozier, Fred S. -- Funeral for Fred Ozier to be held here Saturday -- Funeral services for Fred S. Ozier, 82, who died Sunday in California , where he was spending the winter, will be held in Mansfield Saturday at the Johnson Memorial home at 3:30 p.m. Reverend Peter Young of First Congregational Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Mansfield cemetery. The body will be returned to Akron , and brought to Mansfield Saturday morning. Ozier had been known in hotel interests throughout the vicinity. He operated the cigar store in the old Vonhof hotel, owned by his cousin Charles A. Ozier. He moved to Akron 30 years ago where he operated the Howe hotel. He had many other property holdings there. Ozier, Hannah -- Tuesday. Postmaster N. Ozier and wife go to Shiloh tonight to attend the funeral of Miss Hannah Ozier, at 1 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Miss Ozier died Sunday night, aged 64. She was the only sister of the postmaster. [Richland Shield & Banner: 30 January 1892]
