Jackson, A.B. -- Wednesday.  The remains of A.B. Jackson, who died in Cincinnati on Monday, arrived in this city today and were buried at 2 o'clock this afternoon.  Mr. Jackson, who served as a soldier in the late war, was formerly a resident of this city.  The deceased was about 50 years of age and unmarried.  A committee of local G.A.R. men acted as pall bearers and Rev. Jackson, ---- (Bartley) Arnold -- Mrs. W.T. Jackson, formerly Mrs. G.B. Arnold, died at noon Wednesday.  She was the youngest daughter of the late Gov. M. Bartley and is the last of his family.  There are three children who survive her, Oscar Arnold, a leading business man of Mt .Vernon, E.T. Arnold and Mrs. Dr. Patten, of Youngstown.  Mrs. Jackson has been a great sufferer for the past few months and much credit is due to Mrs. Patten who abandoned her home to care for her mother during her long illness.  The funeral will take place Friday at 1 o'clock p.m. from her late residence, 154 South Main Street.  [Mansfield Herald:  30 May 1889]

Jackson, Harriet B. -- Mrs. Harriet B. Jackson Stricken At Age 85 - Mrs. Harriet G. Burns Jackson, died at her home, 74 Harker St. , this morning following a seven-year illness.  Daughter of Leonard G. and Emma Schaub Burns, Mrs. Jackson was born in Mansfield March 15, 1868 and had lived here all her life. She was a member of the First Methodist church.  Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Darrell E. Taylor, with whom she made her home at 74 Harker St. ; a grandson, John D. Taylor of Shelby ; a great-granddaughter, Janice Taylor of Shelby and two nephews, Gurley M. Burns  of Ashland and Earl O. Burns Sr., of Mansfield.  Funeral services will be conducted at the J.H. Finefrock and Sons Funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday by Rev. Samuel U.J. Peard, rector of the Grace Episcopal church. Jackson, Ida Schuler -- Former Belleville woman passes away suddenly -- Mrs. Ida Schuler Jackson, widow of Dr. Jackson, and a former resident of Belleville for many years, died suddenly this morning at 6:00 at the home of her sister, Mrs. Florence Kelly, West Third street . She had been ill for some time but her condition was not considered dangerous, and the sudden death came as a great shock to her friends. She is survived by one son, Ralph Jackson, of Chicago , who was here over the weekend visiting his mother, and four sisters, Mrs. D. R. Eastman, Mount Vernon , Mrs. Florence Kelly, City, Mrs. W. B. Jackson, Jennie -- The death of Miss Jennie Jackson, daughter of W.T. Jackson, residing 3˝ miles southwest of Mansfield, occurred last Thursday from consumption.  The deceased was twenty-six years of age, and for some years was a consistent member of the M.E. Jackson, John -- About a year and a half ago, John Jackson, son of Jas. Jackson, of our city, while working at Defiance (OH) was taken sick with the intermittent fever.  He came home, and after being here a short time it changed to a typhoid fever.  This weakened his system considerable, but after his recovery he accompanied his father to New York State on business.  One day being exposed to rough weather, he contracted rheumatism in his limbs on his return to Mansfield.   He was able to move about for five or six weeks but the ailment grew so bad that a physician was called and for about three months he was treated for rheumatism.  The patient grew no better, and as the symptoms changed to a breaking out of the skin, a council of physicians held, and it was said by some to be a case of trichina spiralis, a disease caused by the eating of pork containing very small worms, not visible to the naked eye, which worms spread through the system and subsisting on the tissues of the body finally destroy life.  For this disease he was treated up to the time of his death, but as he was afflicted with several other diseases the doctors seem unable to determine the real cause of death.  The case has been examined and studied by several of our best physicians and they say it presents some strange and puzzling phases.  That diseased pork was eaten is not certain, and if it was the rest of the family were not attacked, except a younger brother who is now suffering from symptoms of the same nature.  The deceased was about eighteen years of age, and in his death, which took place Tuesday morning about 3 o'clock, Mr. Jackson and family have the sympathy of the entire community.  The funeral will take place from the residence of his father, No. 151 Mulberry Street, Thursday, December 12th., 1878, at 9 o'clock.  Funeral services will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church.  [Ohio Liberal:  11 December 1878]

Jackson, John Franklin -- J.F. JACKSON, 66, Dies At Hospital - John Franklin Jackson, 66, of 74 Harker street , a life long resident of Mansfield , died at General hospital this morning. He was removed to General hospital last Saturday for treatment.  Mr. Jackson was born in Mansfield on Dec. 7, 1866 . He was employed as a moulder for the New Method Stove Co. and later was identified with the Tappen Stove Co. He was a member of the First Methodist Episcopal church and the Iron Moulders Union, No. 198.  He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Harriet Burns Jackson and one daughter, Mrs, Darrell Taylor; one grandson, John Taylor; a sister, Lillie Albertson and a brother, Harry Jackson, both of Cleveland .  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Finefrock funeral home conducted by Rev. Jackson, W.P. -- Bellville.  The people of this place were shocked on Wednesday morning by the announcement that Dr. W.P. Jackson, William T. -- By the death of Wm. T. Jackson, at the age of 74 years, whose funeral took place from his late residence, No. 154 South Main Street, another pioneer has gone to his rest.  Mr. Jackson came to Ohio from Pennsylvania and for a time edited the Ashland Standard, with his brother-in-law, Mr. Kennedy.  His first wife died in this state, and he subsequently removed to Richland County and bought a farm south of town.  His second wife was Mrs. Arnold, daughter of Gov. Jacobs, Blanche Mildred (Smith) -- 59, of Galion RD 1, on arrival at Galion Community Hospital yesterday (9/8/1965), following a heart attack. She had been in failing health for three years. She was a member of the Sandusky Township Community Club and worked for a number of years in the drapery department of the Galion store of the J.C. Penney Co.   Survivors: husband, Robert: daughters, Mrs. Jacob Bohland of Lexington, Mrs. James Haag and Mrs. Delbert Gubernath, both of Bucyrus; son, Robert of Lexington; sisters, Mrs. Robert Shaefer and Mrs. Louis Snavely both of Bellville; and 10 grandchildren. Jacobs, Robert David -- Galion. Robert D Jacobs, 62 of Galion, RD 1, died yesterday (4/13/1966) in Galion Community Hospital as a result of injuries suffered in a one-car accident early last Saturday on State Route 314, three-fourths of a mile south of US Route 30-S. Mr. Jacobs apparently lost control of his car and it struck a bridge abutment, according to the Mansfield Post of the State Highway Patrol. Mr. Jacobs was born (11/18/1903) in Mansfield. His wife, Blanche, died eight months ago. WORKED IN SHELBY. He was a machinist at the American Machine Foundry Co., Shelby. Survivors in include three daughters, Mrs. Delbert Gubernath of Bucyrus, Mrs. James Haff of Bucyrus, and Mrs. Jacob Bohland of Lexington; a son Robert David of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; and two brothers, Herold and Gerald, twins, of Mansfield. Services will be held at 2:30 pm Saturday from the Kubach-Sulcer Funeral Home, Galion, with the Rev. Richard Yaussy officiating. Burial will be in the Mansfield Memorial Park. James, Lertie - Lertie E. James, 63, of 270 North Main St., died at his home this morning following a four-year illness.  Mr. James was born Nov. 21, 1912, in Sutton W. Va., and lived in this area for the past 25 years.  He was a retired carpenter and a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Army.  Surviving are his wife, Mae B. Bell James; and one brother of Uniontown, Pa.  Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Diamond Street Home of the Wappner Funeral Directors by Dr. Wray C. James, Mrs. D. -- Darlington.  Mrs. D. Jameson, Frederick H. - Frederick H. Jameson, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Jameson, of 305 West Third street, died early this morning at his home in Chicago, Ill., after a long illness. Mr. Jameson was born and spent his early life in this city, but has lately been in business in Chicago. His wife survives him Funeral services and burial will be in Chicago, Ill. Jamison, H.M. -- H.M. Jamison, of the firm of Jamison & Morris, collecting agents, died at his home at Shelby Tuesday of last week, after a long illness from a disease that baffled medical skill.  While some thought he had consumption, others thought different, and to ascertain the cause of his death a postmortem was held Wednesday.  The examination showed that he had suffered from a complication of diseases.  His lungs were diseased and there were also indications of Bright's disease.  His stomach was out of place, blackened and ill-shaped, which was the cause of him not being able to retain food.  --  [Bellville Messenger:  16 March 1906, Vol. 14, No. 7]

Jamison, Oliver -- Washington.  The funeral of Mr. Jamison and also of the infant daughter of James Pluck, Jr., took place at Caesarea Monday.  [Richland Shield & Banner:  15 October 1892]

Jamison, Oliver B. -- Oliver B. Jamison breathed his last at noon Sunday.  On last Tuesday evening he was stricken with a sever hemorrhage of the lungs while on his way to his home, 116 Vennum Avenue.  He was taken into the residence of C.A. Shouse, at 53 Douglas Avenue, where he remained.  His condition continued to be exceedingly critical and Saturday evening a report gained circulation that he had expired.  Under the best of medical care and with all attention possible, he, however, lingered until Sunday.  O.B. Jamison was born near Cadiz, O., July 28, 1867, and consequently was in the twenty-seventh year of his life.  He was the youngest son of Hon. John C. Jamison and wife, who, with their son, Clark B., and son-in-law, Rev. W.H. Vincent, were present at his death.  Mr. Jamison attended the public schools of Cadiz for a number of years and afterwards spent two years in Franklin College at New Athens, O.  On obtaining his majority he embarked in the mercantile business in his native town of Cadiz, but removed to Mansfield in March of 1888.  In connection with a partner he opened a carpet store on Main Street.  The year following the partnership was dissolved, Mr. Jamison carrying on the business alone and adding furniture and upholstering.  He did a prosperous business and in 1892 erected a fine business block on Park Avenue West, where he carried on business until June of the present year when, like many older and more experienced business men, he became involved in financial difficulties.  But reassuming control of the work in September, he was just beginning to surmount his financial troubles when he was called to his reward.  Just one week before his death he had acted as pall bearers at the funeral of his deceased friend, Mr. Frank A. Johnston.  The day was wintry and he contracted a severe cold, which developed into pneumonia and caused his death.  Mr. Jamison was a member of Mansfield Lodge, No. 35, F. and A.M., and Mansfield Chapter, No. 28, Royal Arch Masons, and of the United Presbyterian Church.  A short funeral service was conducted this morning by Rev. F.B. Foster at the late residence on Vennum Avenue.  The funeral party left this morning at 8:45 via the B.&O. to Newark thence over the Panhandle to Cadiz, O., where the funeral proper will take place from the residence of his parents, on Tuesday at one o'clock.  Interment in the cemetery at Cadiz.  On March 15, 1893, the deceased was married to Miss Alice Reynolds, of Ashland, who has the sympathy of a host of friends in her untimely bereavement.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  02 December 1893, Vol. LXXVI, No. 28]

Jaques, Davis -- One of our oldest citizens, David Jaques fell asleep February 14th, 1891. He was born September 22nd, 1801 in Washington Co., N.Y. and came to Richland County in 1815. In 1824, he married to Margaret Cantwell. To them were born eight children. Five daughters and one son remain to mourn his loss. In 1835, father Jaques moved out to his farm five miles south of town and lived there until 1882, when he removed to Shelby. He was a man of powerful constitution, and which served him well in his younger days, when he drove cattle to the Eastern cities and had to ford streams, face dangers and endure hardships. For a number of years his house was the stopping and preaching place of the pioneer ministers. Some of these are well known to fame, such as Adam Poe, Russel Bigelow, Quigley and Bishop Harris. About 1840 he was instrumental in the building of Bigelow chapel which was built on his farm. For fifty years Father Jaques was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church and constant subscriber for the Western Christian Advocate from its commencement. He bore his suffering patiently and died in the triumphs of the Gospel of peace. The funeral services were held at his late residence, Monday morning, February 16th, 1891, conducted by his pastor, Rev. G. A. Jarvis, Oscar G. -- Mansfield Oscar G. Jarvis Stricken at age 72 -- Bellville, - Oscar Jarvis, 72. Bellville, RD1, died this morning Mansfield General Hospital after a four month illness. Mr. Jarvis was a lifelong resident of the Richland County area where he had been self-employed as an excavating contractor for a number of years. He was a member of Bellville lodge F&AM, Bellville chapter of Eastern Star and the North Liberty United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife, Mary; his mother Mrs. Emma Jarvis of Griffith Nursing Home; on sister, Mrs. Lamar Roberts of Ashland, three brothers.  Clarence of Marion, and Harold and Bernard both of Hayesville and several nieces and nephews.  Services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p. m at the North Liberty United Methodist Church. The Rev. Donald Sprague will officiate. Burial will be in North Liberty Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Friday at the Synder Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Men for

Jarvis, Thomas Benton -- Rites Set Thursday For Former Prosecutor -- Service will be held at 3 PM Thursday at the McIntire Funeral Home, Wooster for former Richland County Prosecuting Attorney Thomas Benton Jarvis, 88. Burial will be in the Warner Cemetery east of Wooster.  Mr. Jarvis is the Uncle of Glenn G. Rohleder,  303 Ruth Ave. and Mrs. C. A. Hassinger , Lexington Ave Road. . Died Monday in his home in Washington D. C.  He was born Vermillion Twp, Ashland Co. , He began his practice of Law before World War 1. He was a prosecuting Attorney in 1916 and continued his practice as a member of the firm Karmer and Jarvis. He retired about 20 years ago. He spent much of his time working his vegetable and berry garden and help with the chores on stock farm of his son Richard’s Belvedere Beach vacation resort near Washington  on the Potomac River. He had been active and healthy until week ago. Survivors include his wife Mrs. Edna Warner Jarvis. Survived by two sons, Richard of Fredericksburg, VA and Kenneth of Winnetka, Ill.   Also his nephew Rohleder and second nephew W. C. Jefferies, Harriet -Mrs. Harriet Jefferies, aged 88 years, died Tuesday afternoon at 3 o’clock at the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. A. P. Yeater, 45 Stewart Avenue, having been ill since the first of May.  She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. E. M. McFadden, of this city; Mrs. M. J. Shaffer and Mrs. L. E. Jefferies, Pierce -- Saturday.  Pierce Jefferies, of Sebastopol, Ind., died yesterday at his home.  Mr. Jefferies, when a young man, resided in this county.  He married Miss Mary Schrack, a sister of Mrs. J.J. Jenner, Abraham -- It becomes our duty to chronicle the death of Hon. Abraham Jenner of Crestline on Sabbath afternoon, January 31st., 1869, from a stroke of palsy.  He was sitting with his family a few moments before, apparently in good health, after having made a professional visit to a family, whose physician he had been ever since he commenced to practice.  He was noticed to rise and walk into an adjoining room.  His daughter soon heard a heavy fall and hastened to the room her father had entered, found him prostrated on the floor.  She stooped to raise him when he opened his eyes and almost immediately expired in her arms.  Dr. Jenner was sixty-five years of age, had resided in Crestline over ten years, had practiced medicine in the counties of Richland and Crawford for upward of thirty years.  We first learned to know Dr. Jenner while he was a member of the Ohio Legislature in 1857, as the colleague of Col. Ralston from Richland Co., the last time we had two members in the House from this county.  We know that he was universally esteemed by the House as a candid, honest man -- possessed of good judgment, and sound discretion in all matters of public interest, and one who had the good will of the entire House.  In saying this, we pay the highest tribute possible to the worth of the deceased, for no one can pass the scrutiny of a public assembly where he comes in daily contact with others, without being put severely to the test, and he who gains the love of his fellows, is assuredly worthy of it.  [Shelby Independent News:  11 February 1869, Vol. 1, No. 14]

Jocha, Steve Sr. -- Steve Jocha Sr., 79, of rear 343 west Sixth St. died Monday evening in the Mansfield General Hospital following a brief illness Wednesday.  He was born Nov. 15, 1891 in Salencia , Austria Hungary and came here in 1910.  Mr. Jocha was a retired cabinet maker for the Home Materials Co., retiring in 1958.  Surviving are three sons, Steve Jocha Jr., of Rock Springs , Wyo. , Frank of 232 Marlow Rd., Russell of 1045 Laver Rd., one daughter, M.D. (Evelyn) Boyle of rear 343 West Sixth St. ; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.  The body is at the Wappner Funeral Home where services will be held Thursday t 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. Johns, David Sr.  -- David Johns died at his home, two miles east of the city, this morning after an illness of nearly five years duration.  The deceased was one of the pioneers of Richland County, respected and revered by all who knew him.  He was an honest and upright man and above all a sterling Democrat.  He was also a life-long friend and reader of the SHIELD AND BANNER.  David Johns was born in Jefferson Co., O., in 1808, and came to Mansfield in 1814.  He was married to Elizabeth Foglesong in 1832, and by whom he had twelve children;  six sons and six daughters.  Mrs. Johns died in May, 1861, at the age of 48.  Mr. Johns was again married in 1862 to Amanda Stoutsenbarger, the result of which union was one son.  When Mr. Johns came to this county it was almost a wilderness inhabited by Indians and infested by bears.  Mr. Johns and the celebrated Johnny Appleseed were fast friends and at this day there are trees in Mr. Johns orchard that were planted by this eccentric wanderer.  The funeral will leave the house at 10 a.m. Saturday.  Services at the Disciple church in this city by Rev. Johns, Emeline (Grover) -- Mrs. Emeline Grover Johns, wife of the late Levi Johns, died at the home of her son, Burt Johns, in Chicago Junction, on Tuesday morning, of last week.  Deceased lacked but a few days of being eighty years old.  She had lived with her son since the death of her husband about two years ago, prior to which time she had lived on a farm in New Haven township.  [Plymouth Advertiser:  29 August 1914, Vol. 61, No. 41]

Johns, Harrison -- Bellville.  Harrison Johns, after an extended illness, died Saturday morning at 6 o'clock of consumption, aged 54 years.  The funeral services were held in the Disciple church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.  Miss M.A. Bortel of the Universalist church, of which Mr. Johns was a consistent member, assisted by the Rev. James Mills, of the M.E. Johns, William A. -- William A. Johns was born in Richland County, Ohio, September 20, 1831, and died March 29, 1905, aged 73 yeas, 6 months and 9 days.  He leaves besides numerous friends, two sons, Ralph, of South Bend, and Harry, of Walkerton.  He was a resident of Walkerton about 30 years.  Comrade W.A. Johns was a member of Company C., 128th. Ind. Volunteer Infantry, and was enrolled on the second day of October, 1863, and served his country until the first of September, 1865.  He was also a charter member of Jesse Coppock Post, G.A.R., organized September 16, 1884.  He served a number of terms as sergeant and at the time of his death was filling the office of Q.M. sergeant.  Mr. Johns united with the Methodist Episcopal church of Walkerton many years ago.  Through all these years he remained a constant and faithful member until failing health made it almost impossible for him to attend upon the services of the church.  A very largely attended funeral was held at the Methodist Episcopal church on Sunday afternoon, April 2, at 1 o'clock, Rev. Homer P. Johnson, Clara M. -- Justice James E. Cox, yesterday afternoon, was informed by some one of the family of Tobias Cline, who lives 3 miles east of town, that his services were required to hold an inquest over the dead body of a young lady, named Clara M. Johnson, a young lady visiting Mr. Cline.   The services of the Justice were necessitated on account of the absence of the Coroner from the city.  Mr. Cox proceeded to the home of Mr. Cline and procured testimony from Kate Dicees [sic], the mother of the deceased, Matthew Donnan, Tobias Cline, Annie Cline and J.F. Shambs, all of whom testified that they had saw the deceased previous to her death and she then appeared in her usual health and it was their opinion that heart disease was the cause of death.  The mother testified that she, with her daughter, the deceased, aged twenty-two years, were from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa.  The Justice has not yet reduced his verdict to writing, but it is official opinion that heart disease was the cause of death.  [Ohio Liberal:  26 November 1879]

Johnson, Clarence Clifton -- Clarence Clifton Johnson, the 5-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. N.B. Johnson, living south of Ontario, died Sunday afternoon at about 2 o'clock of strangulation caused by the swallowing of a pin, which he was carrying in his mouth.  The child had just come home from Sunday School and as he was wearing a bright new sweater he was asked to change it before dinner.  He pulled off the sweater and put on his waist which is fastened with a pin at the band.  There was no pin in it and his father told him to go to his mother just across the room for a pin.  After getting the pin he put it in his mouth and started to run toward his father when he stumbled and fell.  Arising from the floor he told the father that he swallowed something and that it was sticking him in his stomach.  In a few seconds the child was unconscious and 8 minutes after the accident life was extinct without having regained consciousness.  Dr. Milligan, of Ontario, was called and he worked with the child but to no avail.  The funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 1:30 p.m., at the U.P. church at Ontario, and will be conducted by the Rev. Johnson, a former resident of this city, passed away at the home of his son, Woodrow Johnson, in Crafton, Pa., according to word received.  Interment was in Hillsboro, O.  During his residence in Plymouth, Mr. Johnson was rector of the Episcopal church at Shelby, O., and president of the Ohio Celery Company, northwest of Plymouth.  He was 71 years of age.  --  [Plymouth Advertiser: 20 March 1915, Vol. 62, No. 17]

Johnson, Joseph -- Capt. Joseph Johnson died at the residence of his daughter in Upper Sandusky (OH), Wednesday, May 3, 1876, aged 89 years, 10 months and 1 day.  The deceased was a Captain in the war of 1812.  He came to this county at an early day, and located at Bellville, where he resided until his death, at which time he was stopping temporarily with one of his daughters.  He had long been a member of the Disciple Church, and in his every day life was a sincere and consistent disciple and follower of the Saviour.  His funeral took place at Bellville, Friday of last week, at 10 o'clock A.M., Elder Wm. Johnson, Lena -- Miss Lena Johnson, a niece of R. Hooker of this city, being in ill-health was taken a few weeks ago to Green Springs, a water cure, in this State, for treatment.  Instead of improving the malady she grew worse, and on last Friday died.  Her remains were taken to New Haven and interred last Sunday.  The deceased was about sixteen years of age.  [Ohio Liberal:  20 August 1879]

Johnson, Melvin -- Melvin Johnson, son of John Johnson, a prominent Democrat of Jackson Township, died at Cedarville Sunday morning from injuries sustained near that place last Friday.  Young Johnson was in the employ of a telegraph company's lineman and while he was at work Friday morning a pole, which had not been securely planted, fell upon him.  His companions saw that he was badly injured and they carried him to Cedarville.  He remained in a comatose condition until his death.  The funeral will be held at Crestline at 2 p.m. tomorrow.  [Richland Shield & Banner:  22 December 1894, Vol. LXXVII, No. 32]

Johnson, Sanford -- Monday.  Sanford Johnson, aged 83 years, died at midnight Sunday, at his home near Bentley's mill, three miles south-east of this city.  Death resulted from a stroke of paralysis.  Mr. Johnson's wife died 16 years ago, but four children survive him.  The funeral will occur from the late residence Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock, and the interment will be at Caesarea.  Rev. Johnson, Victor E. -- Ex-Shoemaker Dies at Age 76 -- Victor E. Johnson, 76, retired shoemaker, of 116 Fourth avenue died today in his home following a lingering illness. He had been unable to work for eight years. He was born June 5, 1872 in Ashland county but lived most of his life in this city. He was a member of the United Presbyterian church of East Mansfield. Surviving in addition to his wife, Mary, is a brother, John D. Johnson, of Ashland county, a niece Mrs. Iva Johnson of Ashland, and a nephew, Raleigh Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif. The body is at the Wappner funeral home where services will be conducted Saturday at 1:30 pm. by Rev. Paul Hunter. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Submitted by klynn. Johnson, William Jr. – William Johnson Jr., 57, of 237 E. Second St. died Friday morning in Wintersong Village Nursing Home in Washington Court House after a long illness. Born Oct. 4, 1930, in Hickman, Ky., he had lived in the Mansfield area most of his life. Mr. Johnson was a member of Church of Christ. Surviving are two daughters, Jacqueline Cowan and Linda Bond, both of Mansfield; a son, Anthony Cowan of Mansfield; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandson. He wife, Betty, died in 1981. Services will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors by his pastor, the Rev. James Bond. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Johnson, William H. -- William H. Johnson died Friday at the noon hour.  The death occurred at the home of Mrs. John F. Schwed, south of town, a daughter of the deceased man.  Aged 74 years, the infirmities of his years caused the death.  Mr. Johnson was a native of Cleveland, and since spring has been making his home with his daughter.  Prior to his sojourn there he spent some time in California.  Besides the daughter, Mr. Johnson leaves a son, E.H. Johnson, of Akron.  Mrs. Schwed and daughter, Alice, accompanied the body to Cleveland, Saturday, for interment. [Richland County Leader:  24 November 1920, Vol. 1, No. 51]

Johnson, William R. -- The remains of Wm. R. Johnston, who died near Buena Vista, Mexico, last spring, arrived in Mansfield on Monday, under charge of Capt. Ford, and were immediately conveyed to the residence of his devoted and patriotic father, Rev. Jas. Johnston.  We learn they will be interred at 11 o’clock on Friday the 3d. inst. with the usual honors.  The committee heretofore appointed, will make the necessary arrangements, which will be published on the morning of that day.  There will be a Funeral Oration delivered at the Church after the interment.  The friends of the deceased are desired to attend.  [Richland Shield & Banner:  01 December 1847]

Johnston, ---- -- A little son four years old of Mr. Robert Johnston, of Plymouth Township, was drowned on Friday last, while on his way from the house to the sugar camp.  His tracks lead right into a pond, as though he intended to wade through it, and was drowned in the attempt.  [Shelby Independent News:  03 April 1873, Vol. 5, No. 23]

Johnston, Elizabeth L. (Logan) -- Bloominggrove.  Elizabeth L. Logan was born Oct. 3, 1821 in Bloomfield Township, Richland County, and has the distinction of being the first white child born in the township.  She was a daughter of Lewis & Mary Logan, was the youngest of a family of ten children, all of whom have preceded her to the great beyond.  She was united in marriage with John Clark Johnston, March 28, 1838, with whom she lived 54 years, he preceding her to the better world nine years ago.  To them were born one daughter, who is now the wife of Frank Rhinehart.  She united with the Springfield Baptist church in early life and later was one of the constituent members of the Bloomfield Baptist church.  Her life has always been one of unselfish devotion of time and strength to make others comfortable and happy.  She leaves one daughter, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  She departed this life April 28 at 7 a.m., being 79 years and almost seven months of age.  The funeral was held in the Baptist church Tuesday at 10 a.m., services conducted by the Rev. Johnston, Margaret — Departed this life on the 17th. Inst., Margaret Johnston, consort of Francis Johnson of Green township, Richland County, Ohio, in the forty-sixth year of her age. Mrs. Johnston was the daughter of pious parents, brought up in the Christian order, and has been a regular member of the Presbyterian church for twenty-six years. She was a woman of an amiable character, and there were few of her sex whose minds were better stored with a knowledge of divine things. She was unassuming in her manners, kind and benevolent, industrious and frugal; in property she was humble, in adversity unshaken — Bearing her illness she continued composed and resigned to the will of her God, and when the time of her dissolution drew near, although endeared to her family by all the tender ties of an affectionate parent, she resigned them all without a murmur, and breathed out her last, we trust, in the arms of her Redeemer. Johnstone, Mary -- Mrs. Mary ALEXANDER JOHNSTONE, 89, Miami, Fla, widow of Robert JOHNSTONE, died at the Mansfield General Hospital Saturday evening. She came to Mansfield to visit her step daughter Mrs. Robert BLACK, 683 Arlington Ave. three weeks ago and was taken ill Saturday morning.   She was born in Fenwick, Scotland, Sept 16, 1876, and came to America in 1925. She had made her home in Florida since then.  She was a member of the Shenandoah Presbyterian Church and the Daughters of Scotia, both in Miami.   Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. T. A. DEEMER of Miami, Fla., with whom she made her home, her step-daughter, Mrs. BLACK, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.   Funeral services will be conducted at the Philbrick Funeral Home in Miami Thursday. Jones, Elizabeth -- Thursday.  David E. Jones, an employee of the street car company, whose mother died at her home on Hedges Street  this morning, appeared in Probate court this afternoon and had a guardian appointed, as he is only twenty years of age.  Jones immediately procured his guardian's permission to secure a marriage certificate for the marriage of himself and Miss Bertha V. Beam.    The haste in the marriage is significant.  The facts are that Mr. Jones has long desired to wed Miss Beam, and being of honorable intentions, promised her he would do so as soon as his mother would grant her permission.  His mother having died this morning the marriage will take place this evening.  [Richland Shield & Banner:  04 June 1892]

Jones, Elizabeth -- Thursday.  After a sickness of about one week, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones, aged 52, died at her residence, No. 8 Hedges Street, at 4 o'clock this morning, of heart disease.  The deceased was the widow of Rev. D.S. Jones, the Congregational  minister who died here several years ago.  Mrs. Jones and her husband were born and married in Wales, coming to this country a number of years ago.  The deceased leaves three sons and three daughters, all of whom were at her bedside at the time of her death.  The funeral services will be held at the residence Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. Jones, 65, formerly of Perrysville, died Tuesday morning at Lexington Court Nursing Home after a long illness.   She was born July 4, 1927, in Richland County to Ruben and Amelia Sampsel Bittinger, now deceased.   She was a homemaker and a life resident of the area. Surviving are her husband, Paul E. Jones, Sr. of Mansfield; a son and daughter-in-law Paul E. Jr. and Linda Jones of Mansfield; three granddaughters and one grandson, Tonya Jones Snow and her husband, Robert, and Rhonda, Tabitha and Jonathan Jones, all of Mansfield; and a sister, Mabel Huebner of Ashland.   She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Ross, and two brothers, Charles and James Bittinger.   Calling hours are Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Diamond Street Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, where services will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Zehner Cemetery. Jones, Howard -- Howard Jones, 18-year-old Galion boy, was fatally injured when he leaved from a moving train at Shelby, Labor Day afternoon, and rolled beneath the wheels.  He died three hours later in Emergency hospital at Galion, where he was taken on a special train.  [Plymouth Advertiser:  12 September 1914, Vol. 61, No. 43]

Jones, Iris -- The first death came from scarlet fever during the present scarlet fever epidemic at Bellville occurred last night when Iris, the eight-year-old daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George N. Jones, passed from life.  The schools were dismissed on account of fear of spread of the contagion.  The little girl was getting along nicely and her death was a great shock to her loved ones and friends.  [Mansfield (OH) Daily Shield:  13 February 1909]

Jones, Jerry -- At about 4:00 Sunday morning Daniel Sweitzer was returning home from a visit to his best girl at Lucas when he noticed a light at the corner of a frame building owned and occupied as a farm implement wareroom by John S. Charles.  Sweitzer thought nothing of the light, as he supposed somebody was building a fire.  A few moments later he passed the place again and this time he found that the building was on fire.    South of the frame was a two story brick block, fronting on the main street sixty feet.  The corner room was occupied by I.C. Charles, son of the owner of the building, and in it was a well stocked country store.  Upstairs was occupied also, by Dr. Culler as an office.  The other part of the building was occupied by John S. Charles and wife, and Rev. Heibertshousen as residences.  Sweitzer accordingly alarmed the owner of the building and the other parties interested.  The church bells were tolled and a large crowd was soon on the spot to see and help extinguish the conflagration.   John S. Charles is the same that was hurt in Mansfield on Orchard street a few days ago and was unable to be about.  I.C. Charles and assistants removed his books and perhaps about $2000 worth of goods from the store, the entire stock being valued at $7000 or $8000.  John Charles went warning out that in the northwest corner of his frame building were powder and dynamite and that an explosion might result.  I.C. Charles and Jerry M. Jones, aged about 58, proceeded to get the books out of the implement room, which they did easily by pulling out the desk.  Marshall John H. Smith, aged 72, marched past the side of the building telling the crowd to keep back lest the dynamite should explode.   Jones commenced to hand out paint and I.C. Charles remonstrated with him, saying that an explosion of the dynamite might take place.  Jones persisted that they must get the paint out.  Young Charles carried two buckets at a time to a place of safety.  When going away with his second or third lot, with Jones inside of the building and Marshall Smith urging the crowd away a thundering explosion was heard.   I.C. Charles had the paint pails knocked out of his hands and was for a moment stunned.  In an instant more a second, but smaller explosion followed.  The crowd was panic stricken.  The frame building crashed to pieces.  A large hole had been made in the rear wall of the brick building and the front was blown into the street.  At the first explosion the tin roof of the brick was elevated all over at least three feet.  When the noise had ceased and the excitement subsided a little, an investigation was made.  Marshal Smith's lifeless form was found twenty feet in the grape arbor.  One side of his face was almost blown away, a gash a foot or more long was across his breast and a like cut was on one arm.  When the fire permitted an investigation of the debris was made for Jerry Jones.  The trunk of his body was found near a large hole in the ground made by the dynamite.  Both arms were missing and the legs below the knee were gone.  No head could be found, and the only thing recognizable as a part of that organ was a mass of matter a medical man declared to be the brain.  His heart was torn out and turned upside down.  Bert Fishack was on a ladder against a barn opposite the burning buildings and was knocked off of it, the ladder breaking in two.  He was more or less injured.    Joseph Hanna was on a barn opposite and was thrown to the ground a distance of at least thirty feet.  He was seriously injured in the back, head, etc.  Thomas Hanna was hurt on the leg, head, between the eyes, etc.  Many others received slight injuries, the most serious being Harlan Smart, Mayor D.B. Jones, son of Jerry Jones, Raymond, Frank and Quinby Russel, John R. Gallagher, Harry Lorow, Isaac Bahney and D.K. Andrews.  E.E. Cunning had a bolt go through the rim of his hat.  The stock that was in the building after the explosion was a complete loss.  The household goods of the two families were nearly all saved.  Dr. Culler lost $75 worth of office furniture, &c.  I.C. Charles' stock was insured in the Phoenix for $2000 and Queen for $1000, which will about cover his loss.  The building was not insured.  It was worth about $3000.  The owner was often urged by his family to have it insured but steadfastly declined.  The two dead men were buried in the Odd Fellows' cemetery at Lucas Monday afternoon at 2:00.  Hundreds of windows, some 400 or 500 feet away, were broken by the explosion, two plate-glass fronts, 200 feet away, being crashed.  The explosion was heart at Mansfield and Loudonville.  [Mansfield Herald:  29 May 1890, Vol. 40, No. 28]

Jones, Malinda -- Bedtick Valley.  Mrs. Malinda Jones, wife of Amasa Jones, died at her home, two miles east of Perrysville, July 4, aged 60 years.  A husband and nine children survive her.  Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Jones, Mary B. -- Monday.  The funeral of Mrs. Mary B. Jones will take place from the residence of Silas C. Parker on Tuesday, September 26th., at 10 o'clock a.m.  There will be short services at the house under the direction of Rev. H.A. Jones, Mary Nelson -- Mrs. Mary Nelson Jones, an aged woman, who has lived in Mansfield for nearly half a century, was found dead in bed this morning at her home, 130 West First Street.  She had been afflicted with heart and lung trouble, but though under physician's treatment, she had not been confined to her bed.  When she retired Wednesday evening seemed about as well as usual.  The discovery that Mrs. Jones was dead was made by her niece, Mrs. Maria Hanna, when she went to call her aunt to breakfast, between 7 and 8 o'clock this morning.  Dr. Edwin Findley was summoned, but Mrs. Jones had been dead some time.  Coroner Baughman was also called and viewed the body.  The inquest will be held Friday at 9 a.m.  The deceased was born in County Monaghan, Ireland, about 78 years ago.  Her maiden name was Mary Nelson.  She came to this country and to Mansfield nearly 50 years ago.  In 1868 she was married to William Jones.  They separated, however, and she secured a divorce.  For many years she and her sister, Miss Jane Nelson, who died June 20, 1897, at the advanced age of 93 years, resided at 130 West First Street, where both the sisters died.  The death of the elder sister was almost as sudden as that of the younger.  Miss Jane Nelson was taken ill in the night and called to her sister, telling her of her illness.  While Mrs. Jones was preparing some tea the end came and when she returned to the bedroom her sister was dead.  The house in which the sisters resided is a landmark, having been the first house erected on West First Street.  The deceased was a member of the Episcopal Church.  Funeral services at the house Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  --  [Mansfield Semi-Weekly News:  11 November 1898, Vol. 14, No. 93]

Jones, Samuel -- Bellville.  "Blind Jones" an old line singer known to many in this vicinity is dead.  The circumstances relating to his death are given by the Shelby News, as follows:  Mr. Samuel Jones ("the blind man") died on Sunday night at the residence of Mr. Harrison Mickey.  It seems that he came from Mansfield, where he was residing with his daughter, and was staying at Mr. Mickey's over night.  He got up during the night, and was found in the last agonies of death.  A physician was sent for but too late.  He expired before relief came.  He has been suffering from heart disease, which was doubtless the cause of his sudden death.  His funeral took place on Wednesday from the residence of Mr. Harrison Mickey, and his remains were laid to rest in Oakland Cemetery.  [Bellville Star:  18 January 1883, Vol. 6, No. 16]

Jones, Sylvester C. -- Died, At his residence in Madison Township, on the 26th. ult., of Consumption, Mr. Sylvester C. Jones, aged 40 years.  The deceased was a kind husband and father, a sociable and obliging neighbor, and a true Christian.  He bore his sickness with patience and resignation;  not a murmur escaped his lips and as disease advanced and his bodily strength failed, his faith in Christ and hopes of heaven grew firm and bright and he was anxious to depart.  He died in peace and set "As sets a star at morn, Which goes not down behind the darkened west., Nor hides obscured among the tempests of the sky, But melts away into the light of heaven."  [Mansfield Semi-Weekly News:  10 January 1862]

Jones, Winona Weatherby -- A telegram was received here this morning conveying the sad information of the death of Mrs. Winona Weatherby Jones, wife of A. Sidney Jones, at Washington, D.C., at 6 o'clock this morning.  The cause of her death was tuberculosis with which she has been ill for some time.  Her husband survives her.  The remains will be taken to Cary, North Carolina, for burial.  Mrs. Jones has a host of friends here who will be very sorry to learn of her untimely demise.  She was a daughter of Mrs. Mary E. Weatherly, of West Fourth Street, who has made her home at Washington for some time.  She was a cousin of Supt. E.D. Lyon, of the public schools, and of Mrs. Roy Antibus, of South Main Street.  Her maiden name was Winona Weatherby and she was born at Cardington 34 years ago, but lived here for some years.  She was a sweet singer and prominent in the musical circles of the city, being a member of the M.E. church choir and afterward she sang in the Baptist choir.  She was married here Aug. 21, 1898 to A.S. Jordan, Floy Marie -- CANTON WOMEN DIES AT MOTHER'S HOME Succumbs here during visit -- Mrs. Floy Marie Jordan, 31, wife of William Jordan of Canton, died early this morning at the home of her mother, Mrs. Angeline McBride, 107 South Foster street, following an illness of two weeks.  Mrs. Jordan came to Mansfield two weeks ago to visit relatives and was taken ill soon after her arrival.  She was born in Bucyrus on May 31, 1901, later coming to this city.  For the last six years she has resided in Canton.  She was a member of the United Brethren Church in Canton.  She is survived by her husband, her mother and five brothers, Thomas E McBride, Elyria, E.M. McBride, Ray A McBride, Russell A McBride and William A McBride all of Mansfield.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Wappner funeral home conducted by Rev. LeRoy J. Jordan, Esther (Dunham) -- Mansfield - Esther Dunham Jordan, wife of Col. Walter E. Jordan, died Thursday at Dewitt Army Hospital in Virginia. Mrs. Jordan was a secretary to attorneys Henkel and Gongwer in Mansfield until her marriage to Col. Jordan. Since leaving Mansfield the couple lived in California, Japan, Korea and Germany until they made their home in Washington D.C. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mansfield. Besides her husband, she is survived by a sister, Ruth Dunham of Annadale, Va. Graveside services will be held in Arlington National Cemetery. Submitted by Linda & Shirley. Typed by Jess Henry. Joslin, Susan -- LEXINGTON -- The bleak winter winds trill mournful cadences over the grave of Mrs. SUSAN JOSLIN, whose name was synonymous with virtue, charity, and whose culture and serene nature was a gracious benediction to her husband, children, mother, brothers, and the large circle of friends who were attracted to her elegant home by the magnetism of her presence, and the hearts of all are keenly anguished by the calamity of her death. Possessed of a competency, her generous heart always responded to the sick and the poor, and when on November 22d, the stern reaper, death, laid his chilling grasp upon her frail life, the most somber gloom filled the minds of the many whose hearts she made glad by the liberality of her benefices. All that the generous heart of her husband, S.B. Joslin, and affluence could prompt was done to arrest the progress of the dread disease that buried the hopes, blighted the prospects of her family, and for nearly four years make of her life a dreary blank. At Cleveland she was informed by physicians of high attainments in the domain of surgery that their skill could not avert her death. This intelligence so appalled her that upon her return about four weeks before her death, she was attacked with violent rigors, which were succeeded by a fever, and after many days of acute physical anguish, with a smile of sweet serenity illuminating her loved features, her ransomed spirit took its flight from its fragile tenement of earth to the joyous realms of heaven at the age of 49 years, three months and 14 days, having been born August 8th., 1834. Rev. Fulton, who officiated at the obsequies, spoke in terms of tender pathos of the deceased, and the hearts of all beat responsive to the bitter anguish of the friends when the remains were consigned to the silence of the sepulcher. The autopsy revealed a fibro cystic multilocular ovarian tumor. By fibro is meant that the substance of the tumor was of the nature of which the fibrous tissues of the body is composed; cystic means a bladder and multilocular from multus, many, and locular, cells or cavities, meaning many cells and cavities. This tumor adhered to both the front and back walls of the cavity of the abdomen, weighed 17 pounds and had 5 or 6 cysts of cells. Drs. Anderson and Keyes, of Mansfield, Carey, Buckingham and Smith, of Lexington, and Hubbs of Independence, were present at the autopsy, Dr. Hubbs having manipulated the knife. The operation of ovariotomy was impracticable owing to the general low vitality and extreme susceptibility to nervous shocks of the deceased. The husband and all the relatives desire to avail themselves of THE HERALD to thank those who aimed to assuage the bitterness of their anguished hearts, and for their constant vigils at the bedside of the deceased, and their presence at the last sad rites.  [THE MANSFIELD HERALD: 29 November 1883, Vol. 34, No. 2]

Jump, Robert -- The remains of Robert Jump, a member of Capt. Seaton's company, in the 26th. regiment, whose death is mentioned by our Fayetteville correspondent, reached this city late on Saturday evening. They were taken in charge by a detachment of Capt. McMullin's Artillery, under command of Lieut. Isaac Fair, and on Sunday interred in a burial place about six miles north of here with military honors, the above squad acting as escort.  The funeral is said to have been one of the largest ever seen in this county, it being estimated that not less than two or three hundred wagons were in the procession.  Mr. Jump was a resident of Weller township, in this county, and is spoken of by those who knew him as an estimable young man.  [Mansfield Semi-Weekly News:  22 January 1862]
