Earhart, Hattie R. (Higgins) -- Lexington.  Mrs. William H. Earhart's sudden death keenly anguished many hearts.  She was taken ill Thursday night at 9 o'clock and in a few hours sank into a deep lethargy.  All that the loving hearts of friends could prompt was done to stay death's chilling hand, but life's feeble vital spark expired at 9 o'clock a.m., Feb. 4.  Death was caused by hemorrhage of the brain.  She was the wife of ex-Postmaster Earhart and five young children, three boys and two girls, also survive her.  She was 35 years old and was born in Hanover, Licking County.  Her maiden name was Hattie R. Higgins.  Her mother is dead and her father, Dr. Higgins, lives in Bowling Green.  It is not fulsome praise to say that Mrs. Earhart was possessed of the finest feminine instincts and graces and envy and malice were strangers to her gentle loving heart.  She had lived in Lexington nearly 10 years and when death's cruel hand fell upon her the hearts of her many friends beat responsive to the bitter anguish that filled the hearts of her husband and children.  Interment at 1 o'clock, Sunday.  --  [Semi-Weekly News (Mansfield):  08 February 1898, Vol. 14, No. 11]

Easterly, ---- -- Bellville.  Mrs. Kate Austin received word on Monday of the death of her mother, Mrs. Easterly at Olin, Iowa.  She was an invalid for years and death came as a relief, although she will be greatly missed by her relatives.  [Butler Enterprise:  31 August 1900, Vol. XII, No. 36]

Easterly, Thomas Watts -- In Richland County, Ohio, Nov. 12th., 1835, Mr. Thomas W. Easterly was born.  In October 1852, his father, Mr. Samuel Easterly, removed with his family to Jones County, Iowa.  The subject of this sketch has lived among us thirty-two years.  He was married to Miss Martha J. Rummel, January 25th., 1866, and the three sons and three daughters who were gathered into his home still abide with their mother.  For the last few years Mr. Easterly has been in failing health.  At times he has been a great sufferer.  But his manly fortitude never forsook him.  At last the golden cord was broken and he passed away Dec. 12th., 1884.  He was peculiarly benevolent, and never failed to render assistance where it was needed.  The people of Olin and vicinity have lost their best counselor, and many will remember how Mr. Easterly has so often sympathizingly helped them over the rough and rugged paths of life.  His kind unceasing attentions to his aged mother were most charming in childlike simplicity and affectionate earnestness.  What a treasurer that mother has lost!  Mr. Easterly was public spirited and was foremost in advocating every measure that would enhance improvement and culture.  Financially he was very successful, and while he was acquiring a goodly treasure for those dependent on him;  he stretched forth a liberal hand on all occasions when philanthropy or charity made a demand.  Mr. Easterly was a practical Christian.  His piety consisted in absolute purity of life and deds of benevolence.  Although he could not make pretentious manifestations, yet he never could be charged with inconsistency.  For a few years he was a member of the church of his parents, that of the United Brethren in Christ.  But on account of some peculiar features of church government he severed his connection.  But he encouraged those seeking religious life by every influence he could conscientiously bring to bear.  In the year 1863 Mr. Easterly became a member of the Masonic Fraternity, and ever since that time he has been one of those who's soul was in full sympathy with the noble doctrines and the benevolent spirit of that ancient and honorable institution.  No Mason ever appealed to him in vain.  His kind heart responded promptly and earnestly to a brother's hail.  On Sunday, Dec. 14th., 1884, a large concourse of mourning friends assembled in the church near Mr. Easterly's home to pay their respects to that neighbor who for years had been chief in public esteem and affection.  The Rev. Mr. Hicks of the United Brethren Church conducted the ceremonies.  --  [Bellville Star:  25 December 1884, Vol. 8, No. 13 as reprinted from the Olin (Iowa) Recorder]

Austin Philpot.  Mr. Eby's death was caused by cancer of the stomach, from which he had suffered for several months.  For weeks he had been unable to retain food in his stomach, and really died of starvation.  All of his intense suffering he bore with Christian fortitude and was through it all kind and patient and uncomplaining.  A post-mortem examination was made on Tuesday by Drs. Sampsell, Kelly, Austin and Stofer, which revealed the true state of the disease and proved that any attempt to have removed the cancer by a surgical operation would have been without avail.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  10 February 1889, Vol. LXXI, No. 39]

Amsbaugh, of Lexington, assisted by Rev. Eells, who some two years ago removed from this city to Centerville, Iowa, died of heart disease on the 5th. inst. at the residence of his son, aged 75 years lacking a few days.  The Centerville (IA) Citizen, in giving the particulars of his death says:  "For the last six months he has been an invalid;  for four months was very poorly, not being able to help himself even in bed.  For the last month he has been improving so as to sit up in a chair most of the time, and within the last two weeks began to walk around in his room by using a chair to steady himself with.  On the day he died he sat up writing letters and reading, and apparently was much better and stronger than usual.  He ate a light supper and retired to bed at 7 o'clock, apparently as well as usual.  At 9 o'clock his son came home and looked in his room, he was then sleeping.  At half past 10 his son went to arrange his clock, that he could notice the time of night, as it was customary with him to have it in sight.  He noticed his father looked pale and did not breathe.  He was dead but lying so calm with eyes closed that a person would not suppose but that he was only sleeping.  he must have passed off without a struggle."  [Richland Shield & Banner:  15 January 1876]

Eichar, Margaret Ruth (Allen) -- Died – At her residence in the southwestern part of Jefferson, Tuesday morning, July 23, 1901, of paralysis, after a brief illness, Mrs. A. B. Eichar in the 66th. Year of her age.  Margaret Ruth Allen was born in Richland County, Ohio, August 14, 1835.  She was one of a family of fourteen children, nine brothers, five sisters, of whom all the brothers and three of the sisters survive her.  On the 8th. Day of October, 1857, in her native county, she was married to Abijah B. Eicher, with whom she lived in holy, happy, wedlock for almost forty-four years.  She was the mother of four children, two sons and two daughters, all of whom are living and were permitted to be present at the time of her decease.  In February, 1860, she with her husband and first born son, removed from Ohio, and settled in Cedar County, in this State, near the town of London.  For 12 years they continued to reside in that locality, and in 1872 they removed to Greene County, locating four miles north and one mile west of Jefferson.  In December 1899, they left the farm bought the beautiful suburban home in the southwestern part of the city where they have since lived in happiest content, and where on the morning of July 23, surrounded by her dearest loved ones, she fell asleep in Jesus.  Two weeks before her death she was busily preparing for a trip to New Mexico to visit a daughter; her grip was packed, the time to take the train had almost arrived, when she was suddenly stricken with severe pains in the head.  A physician was called and for several hours she kept her bed.  She seemed to recover rapidly and on Friday of last week was out on the porch, and was singing about the room, in the forenoon.  All were very much encouraged, but while the family were at dinner, and she was reclining in her arm c hair, she was again smitten.  She became unconscious at once and utterly helpless.  From this stroke she did not rally; she was not permitted to speak any word to her loved ones or friends, but words were not needed; her life was the testimony – patient, trustful, kind and loving, full of good deeds – full of faith.  Heaven is her reward.  Sister Eicher was converted when fourteen years old, uniting with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in London, Ohio.  When they came to Iowa, she united with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which she remained a faithful and consistent member till the day of her death.  She loved the house of God, and was an earnest, devoted worshiper – an interested, attentive hearer.  In her testimony she spoke out of a full heart and a rich experience.  We do not doubt that her spirit has found its place amid the blood washed throng, and tat in her hand is the “palm of victory” and on her brow a “crown of glory”.  The funeral services were held from the M.E. church, Wednesday afternoon, conducted by her pastor, Mr. Billingsley.  The text was from Revelation vii, 9:17, inclusive.  The services were largely attended, he people thus showing the esteem in which the deceased was held.  Interment was made in the beautiful cemetery, the full “Burial Service” of the church being used.  The pall bearers were chosen from her old friends and neighbors, as follows: Wm. Bussey, Geo. Bowley, Hill. Zeitler, O.M. Probst, Matthew Custer and S.M. Taylor. [as reprinted from the Jefferson (IA) Bee]  [Butler Enterprise:  02 August 1901, Vol. XIII, No. 31]

He leaves four children: N.M. Eichelberger, John Eichelberger, Jr. and Mrs. H.B. Dirlam of this city, and Harry M. Eichelberger of Los Angeles, Cal. Eichelberger, Mrs. John -- Mrs. John Eichelberger, of this city who has been a great sufferer from an ovarian tumor for many months past, was operated upon on Wednesday of las week for the same;  This was the last and only resort to save life, if possible, and a tumor as large as a common wooden pail and weighed 25 pounds was removed by Dr. J.W. Craig, assisted by Drs. R. Harvey Reed, A.V. Patterson, I.A. Myers, R. Fairly Work, W.C. Kennedy, J.S. Stewart, and Henry Ruess.  In order to remove the tumor it required an opening into the abdomen over a food long and exposing the entire abdominal vicera.  The operation required less than two hours, being much longer than usual on account of so many large adhesions.  Mrs. Eichelberger stood the operation well and did exceedingly well until last Sabbath morning, when her vital powers commenced to fail, and in spite of all the efforts to the contrary, she continued to sink until 4:40 last Tuesday morning, when death took place from prostration, notwithstanding the wound did well and was nearly healed up, no inflammation of suppuration, having followed the operation.  The funeral will take place from her late residence on West Third Street at 2 p.m. today.  [Ohio Liberal:  27 October 1881]

Emerick, ---- -- As stated in yesterday's SHIELD, J.K. Anderson and E.H. Emerick went to John Pugh's farm near Pavonia yesterday.  They were taken to the spot where the remains of the unknown man were buried and lost no time in exhuming the body.  This was no easy task owing to the awful stench arising from the grave.  The remains were reached after digging to a depth of three feet.  They had been thrown into the hole, as a person would bury a dog.  Mr. Anderson claims to have recognized the clothes as those worn by Emerick when he left Pittsburgh, as he (Anderson) was with him when the suit was purchased.  Mr. Emerick recognized the head as that of his brother, but could not account for a portion of one of the fingers being off.  The men are confident that the remains are those of Emerick and will return home after procuring a copy of the record.  Both suspect foul play.  Some persons are of the opinion that Messrs. Anderson and Emerick are willing to take the remains of any person as those of the lost Emerick in order to get the father's estate settled up.  The fact of them not knowing about the missing finger no doubt gave rise to these intimations.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  14 September 1889, Vol. LXXII, No. 17]

Emminger, James Henry -- It was a sorrowful Easter Day for the congregation of the St. Luke's English Lutheran church yesterday.  The people of that church are mourning the loss of one of the most active and earnest workers in the organization.  They are joined in their sorrow by the people of other churches, who know of the valuable services of the deceased in the uplifting of men and the charitable work he has done.  James H. Emminger dropped dead while he was leading the responsive reading at the Easter services at the church last evening.  He was superintendent of the Sunday School and he was standing at the left of the pulpit when he fell.  The services were mainly conducted by the Sunday School children and he had just uttered these words:  "Who is this Lord of Hosts?"  when he threw up his arms and fell backward, without a moan or cry.  Those who were near hurried to his assistance and believing that he had fainted they took measures to restore him to consciousness.  When he did not revive he was taken into a class-room back of the pulpit where he soon expired.  While all these things were being done, messengers were being dispatched for Drs. Patterson, Craig and Mitchell, and they soon arrived, Dr. Patterson first, Dr. Craig second, and Dr. Mitchell last.  The first named arrived after the heart of the enthusiastic superintendent had ceases beating.  He told one of the members of the choir and soon the audience dismissed, after the sorrowful news had been imparted to them.  When the announcement of his death was made the congregation was almost panic stricken and soon thereafter many ladies were sobbing quietly.  James H. Emminger was born Dec. 31, 1838, and his age therefore, was 51 years, 3 months and 5 days.  The deceased has been identified with insurance business for a number of years.  He was one of the founders of Mansfield Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and has been its' secretary and general manager since its' organization.  He was also local agent for the American, of Newark, N.J., and for the New York Underwriters' agency.  The deceased became a member of the First Lutheran church during the pastorate of the Rev. M.J. Firey in 1868 and soon after became interested in Y.M.C.A. work and was elected treasurer in December of that year and was subsequently re-elected many times.  He was an earnest worker in both organizations.  He helped organize St. Luke's Lutheran church four years ago and at the time of his death he was holding important positions in that church.  [BELLVILLE INDEPENDENT:  10 April 1890, Vol. 2, No. 52]

Smith was deeply affected and the shock was so great that he nearly fainted.  The news spread very rapidly and as the congregations from other churches were just going home the news was known in all parts of the city in an hour after death occurred.  Many people walked to the church and passed into the little back room and looked upon the kindly face of the deceased.  Finally the crowd became so large that the doors were closed.  Mrs. Emminger was present and saw her husband fall and as soon as she heard the terrible news she was taken to her home on North Main Street where friends remained with her to comfort her.  As soon as possible after the doors were closed, the remains were taken away and prepared for burial.  James H. Emminger was born Dec. 31, 1838, and his age, therefore, was 51 years, 3 months and 5 days.  His first wife was Miss Isabel Larimer, a daughter of Mrs. Jane Larimer, to whom he was married Dec. 23, 1860-.  Their son, John L. Emminger, is a popular young man of this city, and is a student at Wittenberg.  Mrs. Emminger died Aug. 11, 1882.  Mr. Emminger was married Oct. 24, 1886, to Miss Hattie Startsman, who survives him.  Mrs. Lydia Emminger, mother of the deceased, resides with her daughter, Mrs. M.L. Garber, Mr. Emminger's only sister and George Emminger, a brother, resides at Toledo.  They were immediately notified by telegraph of the sudden death.  The deceased has been identified with insurance business for a number of years.  He was one of the founders of the Mansfield Mutual Fire Insurance Company, and has been its secretary and general manager since its organization.  He was also local agent for the American, of Newark, N.J., and for the New York Underwriters' Agency.    Mr. Emminger will also be remembered for his services in earlier days in the volunteer fire companies of this city and he served in all capacities from torch-boy to chief.  He was for several years, chief of the old Mansfield Volunteer fire department.  Chief Knofflock, this morning, ordered the engine house draped in mourning.  Abram Oster, who was the last foreman of the Volunteer Engine Co., No. 1, has issued a call for all the surviving members of American Hose company, No. 1, and Deluge No. 2, to attend the funeral. He helped organized St. Luke's Lutheran church four years ago and at the time of his death he was holding important positions in that church.  --  [Mansfield Evening News:  07 April 1890, Vol. 6, No. 27]

Endly, Adam J. -- Squire Adam J. Endly died at an early hour this morning at his lodgings in College Place. Squire Endly some time ago was seized with an attack of paralysis from which after many weeks he apparently recovered and for a month past he had been able to be about and attend to the duties of his office. Sunday he was seized with a second attack and the announcement this morning that this venerable man had departed from the world's toils and cares was quite unexpected, for Squire Endly was about the streets in apparent good health Saturday.  Adam J. Endly was born near Connersville, Pa., July 12, 1815. He was a son of John Endly, who removed to New Lisbon, Ohio, where he permanently resided. At the age of ten years the deceased began working in a dry goods store owned by his uncle, George Endly, at New Lisbon. In 1832 he engaged in the dry goods business with his brother, Henry Endly, at New Lisbon, and at the expiration of four years he sold his interest and with his uncle, George Endly, engaged in the hardware business. In 1844 Mr. Endly came to Mansfield and being impressed with the thrift and growth of the town located here in November of that year and opened a hardware store in the Teegarden block and continued in that business until overtaken by financial reverses in 1865.  In 1874 he was elected a justice of the peace of Madison Township and being a man of fair and honest judgment he was re-elected at the expiration of each term and continued in the office until his death. Back in the forties Mr. Endly was for four years treasurer of Madison Township, in the fifties served four years in the city council and helped lay out Central Park which was then called the Public Square.  Mr. Endly was a delegate to the convention at Baltimore when Henry Clay was nominated for president and coming from the Whig school he became a Republican and always believed in the principles of that party, although he was not a rabid partisan.  He was twice married, his second wife surviving him. His three surviving children are Anthony B. Endly of Hastings, Neb., Mrs. E.E. Tanner of Pittsburg, Pa., and Mrs. F.S. Pershing of Wilkinsburg, a suburb of Pittsburg, Pa. Funeral services at College Place Wednesday at 4 p.m., burial private.  Submitted by Amy.  [RICHLAND SHIELD & BANNER: 01 June 1895, Vol. LXXVIII, No. 3]

Endly, Henry -- Henry Endly died at 3:30 this morning at his residence, 40 East Fourth Street.  He was born in Connellsville, Fayette Co., Pa., in 1808.  In 1816 his father, John Endly, moved to a farm near New Lisbon, Columbiana Co., Ohio.  Henry left home when very young and clerked in David Begg's dry good store in New Lisbon.  In 1828 he went to Pittsburg, where he stayed two years, then moved back to New Lisbon and went into the dry goods business in partnership with James Clark.  He married Margaret A. Wigle in 1836.  In 1845 he moved to Mansfield and opened a dry goods store in what is now the St. James block, with John Wigle, lately deceased, as partner.  He built the house in which he died in 1850.  His first wife died in 1851, and he married Emily A. Phelps, nee Cary, in 1852.  From 1852 to 1870 he was, for the most part, in business alone.  During all these years of active business life he was well known as an enterprising and honorable merchant, and though a man of few words, he was of a generous disposition and befriended many.  He was a member of the M.E. Church of this place.  He suffered for many years from hernia, and during the past two months has been confined to bed, gradually failing from general debility and old age.  He leaves a widow, four sons, Chas. F. Endly, San Diego, California;  Rev. W.C. Endly, Cleveland, O.;  A.B. Endly, Cincinnati, O.;  E.R. Endly and one daughter, Mrs. G.W. Wigle and removed to Mansfield in 1845.  In the St. James block he opened up a dry goods store with the late John Wigle.  In 1852 he married Emily A. Englehart, Conrod -- Lexington.  Death has again entered our midst since writing the above, and taken one of our old and much esteemed citizens, Mr. Conrod Englehart.  Mr. Englehart came to our village about the year 1855, and entered into the grocery business with his brother, Peter Engelhart, who was at that time one of our most energetic and enterprising citizens.  They carried a large stock of goods, and did a large amount of business for some two or three yeas, when his brother met with an accident which caused his death.  Mr. Conrod Engelhart then took charge of the business, and has ever since been engaged in the grocery business.  His great energy and enterprising disposition -- his honesty, benevolence, rendered to those in need, has won the respect and esteem of all of our enterprising citizens, and his death is much regretted by all.  Mr. Englehart, at the time of his death, was 55 years of age.  He has for a number of years past been afflicted with consumption, and for the past few months has been confined to his room unable to attend his business, which was, however, carefully watched by his son, and to-day (Saturday) about 11 o'clock, he quietly passed away, leaving a wife and seven children well cared for.  The funeral of Mr. Englehart will take place from his late residence on Main street, on Tuesday morning, Jan. 15th., at 11 o'clock.  The body will, as I understand, be taken in charge by the Odd Fellows.  -- R.  [Ohio Liberal:  16 January 1878]  *Two different spellings of the surname were used in this article.  I have typed them as they appeared. -- AEA.  Anna M. Erntt, Antoine - Antoine Erntt, a young Hungarian, aged 16 years, son of Mr. and Mrs. Antoine Erntt, living at the corner of Diamond and Olive Streets, was drowned at 1:20 yesterday afternoon while bathing in Painter's pond east of the city.  Erntt was with a score of other companions of his own nationality, all of whom were younger than himself, and they were disporting themselves merrily.  They had a boat and were climbing in and out of the boat, diving from it and indulging in all manner of aquatic sports.  So when Antoine disappeared they did not think anything of it at first.  As he was a good swimmer they thought that he had merely dived.  When he did not appear however they became frightened and raised a he and cry.  Coroner Goodman was notified and soon arrived on the scene.  Under his direction scores of willing hands were quickly at work dragging the lake.  They were kept at work all afternoon and not until half past four was the body found.  Then a rake in the hands of a young man named Lindecker caught on the young man's arm and he was brought to the surface.  The body was found in 12 feet of water about 25 feet north of the place where he went down.  The body was taken to Beelman's undertaking parlor where it was prepared for burial and afterward was removed to the family home on the corner of Diamond and Olive streets.  The funeral will probably be held tomorrow morning at 8:30 o'clock from St. Peter's Catholic church.  Erntt worked in the Hautzenroeder cigar factory and is survived by his parents and six brothers and sisters.  They are heart-broken over his tragic end.  The coroner has not yet held his inquest.  --  [Bellville Messenger:  13 July 1906, Vol. 14, No. 24 reprinted from the Monday edition of the Richland Shield & Banner]

Ervin, Martha Esther -- CHILD VISITS HERE;  DIES A WEEK LATER -- Martha Ervin, Aged 3, is Victim of Septic Poisoning and Expires Within Few Days -- Martha Esther Ervin, aged 3 years, 9 months and 20 days, died Tuesday at the home of her parents, 50 Grove avenue, Shelby.  Septic poisoning was the cause of her death.  The deceased child is the daughter of Mr. George and Mary White Ervin.  Funeral services were held at 10:00 today, burial at Plymouth cemetery.  Mr. & Mrs. John White, grandparents of the deceased child, received a telephone message Tuesday, telling of her death, but giving no details.  They left on the next train for Shelby.  The bereavement is doubly sad considering the suddenness of the death.  Last week Martha visited her grandparents and seemed to be in perfect health.  Two children survive -- Reginald aged 9 years and John aged 4 months.  A host of friends and relatives sympathize with the bereaved family in this loss of their little girl.  [Richland County Leader:  24 September 1920, Vol. 1, No. 42]

Ervin, Ella (Moore) -- The home of Elmer H. Ervin has been the scene of much affliction and sorrow the past week, that grim reaper of death having garnered two loved ones from the home, first was Mrs. Kate Weaver, who had been making her home with the Ervins, on Monday, and at 2 p.m., Thursday, the wife and mother, Mrs. E.H. Ervin, after an illness of less than ten days with pneumonia, entered into life eternal, causing much sadness, not alone in the home, but in the community in general.  She is survived by her husband and five sons, who are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and a devoted mother.  She was aged 51 years.  Funeral from the home this (Saturday) afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.  --  [Plymouth Advertiser:  17 April 1915, Vol. 62, No. 21]

Ervin, Ella (Moore) -- A dark pall of sorrow was thrown over the entire community last Thursday when it was known that the death angel had again visited the home of Mr. Elmer H. Ervin, and after a brief sickness, had taken the beloved wife and mother from that home and that she had closed her eyes upon all that was near and dear to her in this life.  Ella Moore Ervin was born in Chester County, Pa., April 16, 1864, and had she lived another day would have died on her fifty-first birthday.  At the age of twelve, she went to live with Mrs. Katy Weaver, where she made her home until her marriage.  She was married January 1, 1882, to Mr. Elmer H. Ervin, and five sons were born to this union, two of whom are single and still at home, the youngest, Chester, being thirteen years of age.  As a girl she was converted and united with the McKendree Methodist Episcopal church, and through life somehow her very face revealed the gentle and sweet spirit of the hidden character within.  No spot on earth, we are certain, had such attractions for the departed one as her home.  It was here she brought her alabaster box of love and labor and poured them but without stint.  A wife, a mother, a neighbor, has gone and the world will be poorer but there will be one more in heaven.  One less at home.  <<scripture omitted>> Those who mourn her loss are a husband, five sons - Walter of Tiro, Ross and Clarence of Plymouth, Carl and Chester at home, one grandchild and two sisters and three brothers, as follows:  Mrs. D.C. Morrow of Shelby, O., T.J. Moore of Lima, O., Wm. A. Moore of Red City, Mich., Mrs. Hayes Mellick of near Tiro and Frank Morrow of near Tiro.  The funeral services were conducted by her pastor, at the home Saturday afternoon, April 17, and the burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery in Plymouth.  --  [Plymouth Advertiser:  24 April 1915, Vol. 62, No. 22]

Evarts, Reuben

Evarts, Reuben -- Bellville.  Rev. Reuben Evarts, of Battle Creek, Mich., died late last week, and his remains arrived here Tuesday night.  Preparations have been made for a brief funeral service at the Disciple church, at 2 o'clock, this Wednesday afternoon, to be conducted by Rev. J.W. Kapp.  The deceased was a son of Timothy Evarts, was born here, and will be buried here according to his request.  His death was caused by intestinal obstruction, produced by a fall.  --  [Bellville Star:  21 February 1884, Vol. 7, No. 21]

Evarts, Reuben -- Bellville.  Rev. Reuben Evarts, who died at Battle Creek, Mich., as announced last week, was the son of Timothy and Charlotte Evarts, and born in this place in the year 1828 or 1829, and in this place and vicinity his childhood youth and early manhood were spent.  All his school-fellows and acquaintances will remember his aptitude for learning.  At the age of 18 years he began to teach school and taught at times for sixteen years, when the family removed to Illinois, and he entered Princeton College.  After taking a course in theology at that institution, he entered the ministry.  He was an untiring Sunday School worker, and was a teacher in the first Sunday School in this town.  He never defiled his lips with the intoxicating cup.  The family of five children, of which he was one, are all dead but a daughter, who lives in Iowa.  --  [Bellville Star:  28 February 1884, Vol. 7, No. 22]

Evarts, Robert -- Robert Evarts was born on the farm known as the Evarts homestead, now owned by Una Smith, one mile south of Bellville, Richland County, Ohio, on the 17th. day of February, 1853.  He died at Cleveland, O., on March 4, 1905, aged 52 years and 15 days.  Mr. Evarts was a resident of Bellville and vicinity until about 14 years ago, when he moved with his family to Cleveland, where he resided to the time of his death.  While a resident of Bellville he was employed in a shoe store and also in the post office.  On removing to Cleveland he was employed in McMillin's music store until about 18 months ago, when failing health caused him to relinquish his position.  From that time onward the disease, which was an affection of the lungs, made rapid progress until it accomplished its work in death.  On Tuesday, March 7, his body was brought to Bellville, arriving at 10:30 on train No. 4, and then was taken to the Lutheran church, where appropriate funeral services in memory of the deceased, were conducted by his former pastor and intimate friend, Rev. S.S. Kauffman, D.D., now of Findlay, O.  The interment was made in the beautiful cemetery, on the hill, just west of town.  The floral tribute made by his friends in Cleveland and also here was one of the most beautiful and appropriate we have ever seen.  At the age of 16 Mr. Evarts united with the Salem Lutheran church, two miles west of town, where he retained his membership until December, 1885, when he became a charter member of St. Paul's Lutheran church of Bellville.  At the time of its organization he was elected to the office of deacon, which he faithfully filled until his removal to Cleveland.  Finding no church of his choice in the vicinity of his settlement in that city, in March, 1895, he transferred his membership to the Congregational church, where he was again elected to the office of deacon, which office he was bearing at the time of his death.  Mr. Evarts was united in holy matrimony with Miss Abigail Cutting, Oct. 10, 1877.  To this union three sons were born, Sterling, Howard and Erriston, who with five brothers and four sisters, remain to mourn their loss of a kind husband, a loving father and affectionate brother.  It is a real pleasure and delight to bear testimony to the character of a citizen of such sterling worth as Mr. Evarts.  He was a good man in every sense of that term -- good to himself, good to his family, good to his fellow citizens.  In every position to which he was called in church or society he was true and faithful.  He was pure in his language, pure in his habits, pure in his life.  He was of a genial nature, most faithful and cheerful in all of his duties as a member of the church.  He seemed to live in an atmosphere of prayer and religious rejoicing.  He will be sadly missed in his family and the circle of his friends.  He rests from his labors and his works do follow him.  --  [Bellville Messenger:  10 March 1905, Vol. 13, No. 7]

Everts, Emeline M. (Bell) -- Mrs. George W. Everts died at the family home, 422 Walnut Street, Thursday evening at 4:15 o'clock after a lingering illness of several months, aged 60 years, 2 months and 1 day.  Emeline M. Bell was born at Ada, Ohio, June 26, 1843, and was married at Bellville, Ohio, to G.W. Everts.  They resided at Crestline, Ohio, for nine years, then removed to Doylestown, Ohio, and from there to Oneida, S. Dak., where they resided for twelve years, coming from there to this city nine years since.  Besides her husband she leaves five sons, two daughters, one brother and two sisters.  She was a devoted wife and mother and lived only to make others happy.  Her greatest desire was that her children might grow up good men and women, and to that end nothing profane, nor that would defile was ever permitted to enter her home.  At the age of 16 she united with the M.E. church and lived a consistent member and a Christian all her life.  Funeral services at the M.E. church, south, Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock.  The death of Mrs. Everts is felt in the Republican-Era office and in the Typographical Union.  The bereaved husband was at one time at the head of this establishment and three deceased's sons, George, Rezin and Roy, have worked in the office, the latter having been her for several years.   All three of the young men are members of the printers' union.  Our sympathy goes out to the sorrowing relatives and especially to hose with whom we have worked.  We know that Mrs. Everts' efforts toward raising good sons and daughters have been entirely successful.  Our country has no better citizens than those who have been reared by her.  Our feeble efforts to console and our sympathy while without doubt tenderly appreciated by the sorrowing ones cannot dispel the gloom and the sorrow that is today pressing their throbbing hearts.  Time alone will alleviate that pain   [Bellville Messenger:  04 September 1903, Vol. XI, No. 35 as reprinted in the Murphysboro (IL) Daily Republican-Era of 28 August 1903]

Ewing, Will T. -- After eight weeks of suffering the soul and body of Will T. Ewing parted at 6:30 last evening and his friends are left to mourn the loss of one who was always bright, good natured and happy.  Possessed of a will and determination almost unequaled, it was only after a hard fight that death conquered and bore off as its prey an immortal soul.  Will was ambitious to live, but not afraid to die.  He had everything to live for.  Had he lived but little more than a week longer he would have reached the dawn of a promising young manhood.  His portion of his father's estate would have placed him in a position, with his ambition, energy and pluck, to have made him a man of influence and standing among men.  During the year and a half that he has spent in Colorado he has been in the mountains and earned and invested his money with such business sagacity as to many times increase its value.  In dying Will Ewing had fewer things to regret than most young men.  If he ever committed a wrong it was beyond his intention, and the immortal Father judges as we will, not as we do.  And as his friends bid his face good-bye when all that is mortal is consigned to the dust from which it came, it will be with the happy conviction that they will meet again in that glorious beyond, just over the range.  The funeral will occur at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning, conducted by Dr. Tevis, of the Presbyterian church, of which Mr. Ewing was a member.  --  [Richland Shield & Banner:  31 March 1894, Vol. LXXVI, No. 46 as reprinted from the Boulder (Col.)
