Dobbs, Harvey J. -- Harvey J. Dobbs, the well-known drayman, dropped dead at 7:30 o'clock this morning in the driveway of the City Mills, on North Main Street. Mr. Dobbs was talking to H. Whipp, who was seated in his buggy. They had been in conversation for some time, when suddenly Mr. Whipp heard a grown and saw Mr. Dobbs fall between the wheels of the buggy. He called to several employees of the mill, who carried him inside and sent for Dr. Ecki. The doctor, after making an examination, said the cause of death was heart disease. The remains were immediately taken to the deceased's home, on Vennum Avenue, by Undertaker Niman. Harvey J. Dobbs was born in July, 1850. Consequently he was forty-three years old at the time of his death. He was the son of Thomas R. Dobbs and wife, who survive him. He leaves four sisters and three brothers, all of whom are living. The deceased was a member of the First English Lutheran Church and for a number of years was a member of the church choir. Mr. Dobbs' many friends were shocked at the announcement of his death this morning, as he had always been an exceedingly strong and healthy man. Dobbs, Margaret -- Mrs. Margaret Dobbs died Sunday evening, Jan. 17, at her home, No. 18 Parker Street. Mrs. Dobbs, whose maiden name was Shaver, was born in Juniata County, Pa., Sept. 17, 1815. She was married May 5, 1835, to Thomas Dobbs. They removed to Ohio where all her subsequent life was spent. She was the mother of 12 children of whom nine grew to manhood and womanhood and seven of them survive her. She made a profession of religion early in life and always adorned this profession by a walk and conversation becoming the gospel, possessing in a marked degree a meek and quiet spirit. Since the death of her husband and the sudden death of her son Harvey, three years ago, Mrs. Dobbs had been in feeble health, and for the past few weeks had been confined to bed. Dobbs, Thomas -- Tuesday. Thomas R. Dobbs died at his home on Vennum Avenue at an early hour this morning at the age of 84 years. Mr. Dobbs moved to this city a few years ago from near Lexington. He has been failing in health for some time and the shock caused by the sudden death of his son, Harvey, two months ago, hastened his death. Mr. Dobbs leaves a wife and five children. Dobre, Catherine Lenora -- Mrs. Catherine Lenora Dobre, 73 of 217 Crestline Ave., widow of Samuel Dobre, died in Mansfield General Hospital Wednesday evening following an illness of two and one - half months. Mrs. Dobre was born in Mansfield, May 17, 1902, and had lived here all her life. Surviving is a sister, Mrs. Wayne Au of 591 Yale Dr. Services will be conducted in Finefrock's Saturday at 10 a.m. by Jehovah's Witnesses. Burial will be in Mansfield Cemetery. Dodd, J.H. -- The Rev. J.H. Dodd, former pastor of the Christian Church in Shelby, died Friday morning at the home of his brother in New Philadelphia, where he had been for the past two months following the nervous breakdown which made it necessary for him to give up the pastorate of the Christian Church at Chardon, where he went from Shelby a year ago. -- [Plymouth Advertiser: 04 April 1914, Vol. 61, No. 20]

Dodd, Thomas P. -- On Wednesday evening, the 17th. inst., a shadow of gloom fell over our town when it was known that Thomas P. Dodd, one of our esteemed business men, had passed beyond earth's shadows. During his long and severe illness of thirteen weeks there were trembling hopes in the hearts and on the lips of every one that might be spared, but a higher power which makes no mistakes had otherwise ordered. Doerr, Peter -- Peter Doerr, who has been a resident of Mansfield for the past seventeen years, died Sunday afternoon at his home on Ford street. The case of his death was heart disease complications. He was born in Der Rhein Pfaltz, Bavaria, Germany, 69 years ago and came to this county and to Mansfield seventeen years ago and began work at S.N. Ford & Co.'s lumber works, where he has been continuously employed ever since. His wife died about eighteen months ago. Mr. Doerr leaves one daughter, Mrs. Philip Walter, and three sons, Peter, John and Isaac Doerr. Funeral services at St. John's Evangelical church of which the deceased was a member, Wednesday afternoon at 2:00 conducted by the Rev. William Dressel. Dohla, John Jr. -- Friday. John Dohla, Jr., the seven-years-old boy, who was run over by the Spring Mill street car on Wednesday afternoon, near the Baltimore block, died at the home of his parents on North Bowman Street shortly after 3 o'clock this morning. The boy was an only child and his parents are nearly crazed with grief over the unfortunate occurrence. The child was delirious all day yesterday and up to the time of his death recognized no one. The funeral will take place from the family residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, rev. Buesser officiating. The case is a sad one. [Richland Shield & Banner: 03 September 1892]

Dolan, Martin -- Wednesday. Martin Dolan died at the home of his brother on West Johns Street at 6 o'clock last night of paralysis. The deceased was about 35 years of age and unmarried. Donagen, Patrick -- Patrick Donagen, aged 78 years, was found dead in his bed at the county infirmary Sunday morning by Superintendent Van Devere. Death was caused by heart disease. Donahue, Catharine -- Mrs. Catharine Donahue, relict of John Donahue, died Monday evening at 6:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mike Hogan, on North Main Street, at the age of 78 years. She has been afflicted for a number of years with asthma, which at last resulted in her death. The deceased was the mother of James A. and William Donahue. Donel, John W. -- John W. Donel, eldest son of the late Samuel and Harriette Donel was born April 1st., 1852 and died after a lingering illness February 6th., 1930, aged 77 years, 10 months and 5 days. Mr. Donel spent his entire life in this vicinity. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Mrs. Minnie Payne. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Loose of Columbus, one son Charles Donel of Cleveland, and ten grand children, Daniel Loose, Charles Loose, Mrs. Louise Van Antwerp and Miss Janett Donel all of Clevland, Donel Loose, Robert Loose, John Payne and Howard Payne of Columbus, Mrs. Lucia Whitesell of Crestline and Mrs. Irma Bixler of Bellville. Funeral services were held at the home on Huron Street Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock and burial was made in the Bellville Cemetery by A.A. Shafer. Rev. Temple conducted the services. Donnan, Andrew -- DIED -- Near Mansfield, Sept. 23d., Andrew Donnan, aged 75 years. Andrew Donnan was born in Scotland in the Shire of Galoway, May 4, 1809, and died near Mansfield, Richland County, Ohio, September 23, 1884. He was the son of David and Margaret Donnan who emigrated to America with their family of four sons and one daughter when Andrew was five years old. He always retained a vivid recollection of crossing the ocean. The family settled first in Belmont County, Ohio, where they remained three years, then purchased the farm in Richland County five miles from what is now the city of Mansfield. There the father and mother spent the rest of their lives, and from that place they were carried to their last long home. Upon becoming settled they united with the Seceder's Church of Mansfield, of which Rev. Mr. Hineman was pastor for many years, he was Elder to the end of life. Whether they brought letters from Scotland is not known, but it is probable that they did. Mrs. Margaret Donnan was a woman of earnest, decisive character, never afraid to speak what she deemed the truth on any subject. When her husband was removed by death, her voice had never been heard in prayer, yet from that time on through life she kept up family worship and asked a blessing at the table. Andrew, the subject of this sketch, remembered but little of his early childhood in the "Mither country", but it was evident that the "gude" woman's impress was upon the son. From her he inherited those peculiar traits of character that made him wherever he was the respected neighbor, kind and true friend and loyal citizen. He was a lover of children, and many of that class who know will long remember with pleasure his occasional visits to their homes. In 1835 Andrew went to Mt. Gilead to live, where he worked twelve or fifteen years at his trade as tanner. January 1, 1837, he united in marriage with Miss Joanna Potter at the residence of Mrs. Emeline Hicks, the bride's sister. From Gilead he went to Lincoln Twp., and from there to Bennington, near the Friend's Church, spending a few years only in each place. In 1866 he moved with his family to Morton's Corners where during the following winter he was converted under the ministry of Rev. G.W. Bainum of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. Upon removing to Richland County in 1875 he and his wife joined by letter with the United Presbyterian Church of Mansfield, of which he was a worthy member at the time of his death. During his last illness he was a sufferer, but no word of mourning escaped his lips. As long as he was able he preferred to wait upon himself, but so rapid was the inroad of dread disease that his naturally strong constitution soon gave way, and the hands that were hard and stiffened with toil became powerless to move. Numerous friends and neighbors visited him and were ever ready to assist in ministering to his needs. Able physicians were in attendance, but no power was found to grapple with the king of terrors and rescue the victim from this relentless grasp. His testimony amid his sufferings, while yet his intellect was undimed was "if it is the Lord's will to take me now, I am ready. I know that my Redeemer liveth." The funeral services were at the house, conducted by Rev. Mr. Anderson, assisted by the Presbyterian minister. Mr. Donnan's four sons were present at the funeral and carried the remains of their honored father to the hearse, and at the cemetery from the hearse to his final resting place. The wife of his youth survives to walk a lonely pathway a few days, for it cannot be long until another summons will come, and those separate for a little season will be reunited to pass an unbroken eternity in praise to Him who has washed them and made them white in His own precious blood. -- [MANSFIELD HERALD: 09 October 1884, Vol. 34, No. 47]

Donnan, Ellen -- Mrs. Ellen Donnan, widow of the late Wm. Donnan, died of heart failure at her home at Hastings, Wednesday, Oct. 3, at the advanced age of 70 years. She leaves six children Mrs. Clara Snyder, of Newville, Mrs. Etta Myers, of Lexington, Mrs. Samantha Armstrong, of Mt. Vernon, Riley Donnan, of Lexington, Charles of Michigan, and Frank of Hastings. The funeral was held at the home Saturday at 10 a.m. and interment was made in the cemetery near Hastings. Donnan, Jennie Ferguson -- Dies At 96 - Mrs. Jennie Ferguson Donnan, 96, daughter of Richland county pioneers, died Saturday at Massillon. Mrs. Donnan was born May 6, 1853, near Mansfield. She was the daughter of James and Nancy Ferguson, who came to Richland county in 1852. Mrs. Donnan moved to Mansfield in 1898 and lived here until she left in 1945 to make her home in Massillon. She is the widow of Rev. J. W. Donnan. Mrs. Donnan was a member of the Presbyterian church and of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Survivors include one brother, T.B. Ferguson of near Mansfield; several nieces and nephews; and three step-children. The body was removed to the Wappner funeral home where funeral arrangements are incomplete. Donnellan, Thomas -- Thursday. Thomas Donnellan, aged 17 years, died at 5 o'clock last evening at the home of his father, Edward Donnellan, on Cline Avenue. His death was the result of being struck on the forehead by an engine at Pittsburg, Pa., July 7th. On Monday two physicians sought to perform an operation, but were deterred, fearing that the patient would bleed to death. His condition was most critical from the time of the accident, but it was thought when he left the hospital at Pittsburg that he would recover. He arrived at his home on Sunday, August 27th., since which time his condition has been regarded as hopeless. Donnelly, John -- John Donnelly who had attained the age of 91 years died Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Arthur O'Leary in Crestline. The remains were taken to Wooster Tuesday for interment. [Mansfield Daily Shield: 20 April 1909]

Donnenwirth, Monetta -- Acting Coroner F.J. Gillam of Bloomville, filed his verdict of the inquest into the case of the death of Monetta Donnenwirth at her home in Bloomville, last Saturday. Having examined the body and considering the facts and circumstances; the coroner found that her death came by reason of having received the discharge of a loaded shot-gun shell, which gun was in the hands of Edward Donnenwirth. Donnon, J.W. -- Lexington. The remains of Rev. J.W. Donnon of Mansfield, who died at his home on Augustine Avenue, Saturday afternoon, were brought here Monday afternoon for burial. Mr. Donnon was a minister of the Central Ohio M.E. Church and was stationed as pastor at Toledo, Wauseon, Marion and Ottawa, St. Mary's and Delaware before becoming a resident of Mansfield. He was born in Morrow County, November 22, 1850. Since his marriage to Jennie Ferguson, July 7, 1921, he has resided in Mansfield. Rev. Mr. Donnon is survived by his wife and two daughters, Miss Elizabeth Donnon of Wellesley College, Miss Florence Donnon, Perrysburg, and two sons, Ralph Donnon, secretary of the Painesville Y.M.C.A., and Ray Donnon of Toledo. Donough, Amos -- Amos Donough was born in Wayne County, Ohio, March 18th., 1838, departed this life in the triumphs of a living faith in Jesus Christ, December 26th., 1903, aged 65 years, 9 months and 8 days. Mr. Donough moved with his parents to Richland County when quite young, settled in Jefferson township on the farm now owned by Daniel Riggle. He was united in marriage to Lovina Fox, daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth Fox, of Jefferson township, November 24th., 1859. To this union seven children were born, two sons and five daughters, two daughters having preceded the father to the spirit world early in life. He leaves to mourn his departure his grief stricken companion, two sons and three daughters, nine grandchildren, one brother and two sisters and a host of friends. He was converted early in life and soon after united with the Evangelical church and remained a faithful follower of Christ to the end. He was a devoted Christian and had the church and its interests close at heart. he was a faithful attendant to the house of God until stricken with disease, but he never lost his faith and unwavering trust in his Blessed Master, although stricken in body and mind. In his departure the community has lost a good citizen, the church a devoted Christian worker and the family a kind loving Christian husband and father. But their loss is his gain. It was his greatest desire that his family might again be re-united beyond this vale of tears. His funeral took place Tuesday, December 29th., at the Evangelical church in Butler, conducted by the pastor, Rev. E. Radabaugh. Interment in the Zion cemetery. Dooley, ---- -- A four-year-old son of J. Dooley, Mansfield, was killed the 10th. inst., by a wagon box upsetting on him and crushing his skull. [Bellville Star: 17 July 1884, Vol. 7, No. 42]

Dooley, Willie -- A sad accident occurred on East Fourth street, Thursday forenoon, resulting in the death of Willie, a four year old son of Joseph Dooley, who is a moulder in the Baxter Stove Works. The boy and his little sister were playing in an alley opposite their home, on a wagon box, which was set up against the fence on its side. While the little girl was running along the top, it fell over and the corner struck the boy on the side of the head, inflicting a mortal wound and also breaking his shoulder bone. Doolittell, Columbus S. -- Rev. Dr. Columbus S. Doolittell, of 140 Park Avenue West, died at 3 o'clock this afternoon, of old age. Mr. Doolittell was born at Fredericktown, Knox County, O., Oct. 24, 1819. He entered Kenyon College in 1843 and graduated in the classical course with high honors in 1848. In 1856 he accepted a call to St. Luke's Church, Granville, and at the same time became associate principal of the Granville Female Seminary. In 1853 he was married to Miss P.A. Lindley, of Fredericktown, and moved to Mansfield in 1861, where he has lived ever since. About 1876 the deceased became the editor of the Ohio Liberal, but when that paper became a Democratic publication he left it and in 1877 accepted the position of associate editor of the Mansfield Herald, which position he held until about four years ago, when he retired to the insurance business, in which he was engaged at the time of his death. Doolittle, Lucius O. -- Pioneer Resident Called By Death: Capt. Lucius O. Doolittle, Civil War veteran and one of the pioneer residents of Richland County, died at 5:45 o’clock last evening at his house 26 North Benton Street. He was in his ninetieth year, and had been in failing health for some time. Born Dec. 27, 1832 in Windham County, Vermont, Capt. Doolittle came to Mansfield in 1853 and became actively engaged in business. He continued to follow his business until the outbreak of the Civil War. Enlisting as a private in Company G, 15th OVI, Capt. Doolittle was later commissioned as a captain. He remained in command of his company until the close of the war when he returned to Mansfield and again became engaged in business. On March 14, 1866, he was united in marriage to Miss Martha Watkinson, who proceeded him in death nearly four months ago. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1916. At the time of his death, Capt. Doolittle was one of the oldest members of the Grace Episcopal church. He was also a member of McLaughlin post, GAR. Doolittle, Martha Watkinson -- Miss Martha Watkinson Doolittle, one of the pioneers of this city, died at her home, 26 North Benton Street, this morning at 9:30 o’clock, at the advanced age of 82 years. She was born in Lancaster, England, Oct. 30, 1939, and came to America with her parents in 1842, locating in this city in 1866, where she has resided since her marriage to Capt. Lucius O. Doolittle, March 14, 1866. On March 14, 1916, the couple celebrated the golden anniversary of their marriage, which was a very pleasant event. She was a lifelong member of the Episcopal church and at her death she was the oldest member of Grace Episcopal church of this city, where the marriage ceremony was performed. She is survived by her husband, Capt. L. O. Doolittle, and fire sons, Herbert O., James S., William W., Rufus P., and Milton O. Doolittle, all residing in or near this city, and two daughters, Mrs. Marion Leppo of this city and Mrs. E, F. Dent of Hammond, Ind.; also 19 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Besides raising her own children, she became a mother to the six children of her sister and the one son, Lucius D. Marston, she took an especial interest in from babyhood. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 3 o’clock, by Rev, Dr. D. F. Davies, of Kenyon college, Gambler. Doolittle, Ruby F. (Maurer) -- Mrs. Ruby F. (Maurer) Doolittle , 79, of 405 Chevy Chase Rd., wife of Harold C. Doolittle, died in Mansfield General Hospital Tuesday after an extended illness. Mrs. Doolittle, a retired nurse, was born in Clermont County Dec. 11, 1900. A native of Tipp City, she moved to Mansfield in 1921, to St. Petersburg, Fla., in 1958 and back to Mansfield in 1971. She was a graduate of Mansfield General Hospital School of Nursing and was active in the Mansfield General Hospital Alumni Association. Mrs. Doolittle was a surgical nurse for one year and from 1925 to 1958 was a private duty nurse. She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church and Order of the Eastern Star, Ruth Chapter No. 17. Surviving are her husband, Harold; one son, Robert M. Rice of Wauwatosa, Wis.; and one grandson. Services will be held in the Finefrock Funeral Home Friday at 1 p.m. by the Rev. Michael B. Goldner, visitation pastor of the First English Lutheran Church. Dopps, Harold S. -- Harold S. Dopps, 76, of 55 Stewart Ave., died Friday evening in Mansfield General Hospital following a one year illness. Mr. Dopps was born October 13, 1907, in Eldon, Mo., coming to Mansfield in 1940. He was a U. S. Air Force veteran, serving in World War II. He was employed at Westinghouse for 25 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Park Avenue Baptist Church, Westinghouse Veterans Association and the Retman's Club. He is survived by his wife, Gertrude M. Dopps; two sons, Dan Dopps of Mansfield and David Dopps of Pinckney, Michigan; three brothers, Roy Dopps of New Port Richey, Florida, Gene Dopps of Isle of St. George, Ohio and Don Dopps of Mansfield; three sisters, Mrs. Thelma Crawford of Portsmouth and Mrs. Edith Paynter and Mrs. Helen Barton, both of Mansfield and two granddaughters. Dorem, Fremont -- Fremont Dorem, aged about 65 years, died last Sunday at his rooms in the building east of the Imperial hotel as the result of chronic nephritis. His wife died several months ago. Dorem, Mary Elizabeth -- Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Dorem, aged 54 years, died last Saturday in her home here after a serious illness of several months. She is survived by her husband, M.F. Frye, officiating; interment was in the Bellville Cemetery. Dorman, Catherine (Bush) -- Mrs. Catherine Dorman, wife of Barney Dorman, died suddenly Saturday afternoon about 5 o'clock at her home, 85 East Second Street. She had seated herself at the supper table a few moments before, but had not begun to eat when she fell over on her side and before her friends could reach her, or medical aid could be procured, she had passed peacefully away, apparently without pain or struggle. Dr. Maglott was summoned, but the spark of life had fled. The cause of her death was heart trouble, with which she had been afflicted for some time, though she was in reasonably good health and had apparently been as well as usual Saturday. Mrs. Dorman's maiden name was Catherine Bush and she was born at Winsenbach, in the province of Alsace-Lorraine, France, Feb. 16, 1836. At the age of 7 years, she came to America with her parents and resided at Rochester, N.Y., removing to Mansfield two years later. She was married Sept. 26, 1858 to Barney Dorman, who with four sons and seven daughters born to them, survive her. The sons are Henry, John, Peter and Fred Dorman, and the daughters are Mrs. Charles Caston, Miss Kate Dorman, Miss Mary Dorman, Mrs. William Roberts and the Misses Bertha, Lena and Rickey Dorman. All reside in this city. Mrs. Dorman also has two brothers -- Peter Bush, of Mansfield, and Jacob Bush, who resides four miles northeast of the city. Dorsey, David -- Bellville -- David Dorsey, once a resident of Bellville, who went to Oregon in 1853, died at Challis, Idaho, on Nov. 19, 1894. He was a shoemaker by trade, having served an apprenticeship with Solomon Wagner. For years his whereabouts were now known. Doty, Joseph -- Mifflin. Joseph Doty, an aged and well to do farmer, died at his residence, two miles north of Mifflin, last Wednesday evening, after a five weeks illness of dysentery and congestion of the lungs. He was aged 78 years, 3 months and 17 days and was one of the pioneers of this township. He was highly respected and loved by those who knew him. Doty, Martha -- LEXINGTON -- Mrs. Martha Doty, aged 79 years and four months, died at her home on West Main street, Sunday afternoon at 3:00. She was the widow of ex-Commissioner Joseph Doty, being survived by her two daughters, Mrs. John Campbell and Mrs. Belle Tucker, both of Lexington, and one son, Boyd P. Doty, of Westerville. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 by the Rev. Nelson Shedd of Lexington. Burial was in the family lot in the Lexington cemetery. Doty, Rachel -- Calvin Doty and sister, Mrs. Thomas Tingley, went to Mifflin Sunday to attend the funeral of their aged aunt, Mrs. Rachel Doty, widow of the late Joseph Doty, near that place. Doty, Rolden C. -- The Grand Forks (ND) Daily Plaindealer of July 31 has a column article concerning the accidental death of Rolden C. Doty, who was a fireman on the Great Northern railroad. He was looking out of the cab window to examine the engine when he was struck on the head by the iron rod of the crane upon which mail sacks are hung to be caught by trains that do no stop. His injuries proved fatal shortly afterward. He was 23 years of age and had been with the company for seven years. He had shortly before passed an examination for promotion to be engineer. The local paper refers to the young man in highest terms. He was a native of Plymouth, this county, son of Peter and Orvilla Doty, formerly of near Plymouth, where his grandfather William Passel still lives. Dougal, John, Sr. -- On Wednesday evening last, John Dougal, Sr., of Springfield township, departed this life, aged 95 years. He came to Richland County when there were not a dozen houses in Mansfield and would have been sixty years a resident of the county, next November. He was one of the first settlers, and of course experienced all of the privations of a pioneer life -- was a highly respected citizen, and leaves five sons and three daughters to mourn their loss. Douglas, Flora Elizabeth (Thorpe) -- Died, on the morning of the 31st. ult., Mrs. Flora Elizabeth Douglas, wife of Daniel Douglas, in the twentieth year of her age. In this mysterious and sad bereavement, Mr. Douglas has the heart-felt sympathies of many in our community. Having bought a home in our town, he hoped to enjoy it with her, the sharer of life's brief joys. So hopeful and buoyant, thus soon are those hopes blasted. This is the earthward side of the cloud. Above, there is a God who reigns. He is not an arbitrary tyrant, but a wise and merciful God. He doeth all things well. Mrs. Douglas was a daughter of David Thorpe, of Batavia, N.Y., who died some two years ago. She was beloved by all who knew her as a lady of culture and amiability. She was born in Batavia, and came to this place with her husband, about one year ago. Though her stay was brief, she will not soon be forgotten. A sweet bud that was not permitted to bloom on earth, was laid in this mother's lifeless arms, and both were taken to Batavia, N.Y., for interment. The tender nursing of heaven, and she who gave up her life for its life, now live beyond the river, their bodies in sweet embrace wait the arch-angel's trump, when together, they shall rise clothed with immortality. Douglass, Augustus Allen -- A Well Known Citizen and Lawyer Passes From Earth. Augustus Allen Douglass was born in Monroe township, Richland county, Ohio, Oct. 30, 1850. He died at his home in Mansfield, Wednesday, Aug. (, 1911. These words express the beginning and the end of a brief and notable career. Mr. Douglass was the eldest son and eldest child of John J. Douglass and Sophia (Shrack) Douglass. His father and mother were prominent in the early history of that township, and the early life of the deceased was one of rugged hardships, incident to and industrious boyhood of farm toil. He early forged forward in the activities of the district school and later acquired an academic education in Greentown Academy under the tutorship of Prof. Sample, and his acquirements were such that at the early age of seventeen, he distinguished himself as a teacher in the common schools. His persevering leadership, his indomitable courage, his tireless industry and his splendid scholarship, forced him into recognition, so that in 1880, he was elected a school examiner of this county, serving with great distinction, and in 1882 he was by the state examiners, awarded a teacher's life certificate. Mr. Douglass, in close succession, was superintendent of the schools of Shiloh and Bellville, so that by his activities and his close touch with public affairs, he acquired an extensive and meritorious acquaintance throughout Richland and surrounding counties. In 1885, he was admitted to the practice of law, and almost immediately in 1890 was elected prosecuting attorney of Richland county and in 1893 was re-elected by an increased and almost phenomenal majority, serving in all, a period of six years. His official life in that department was wholly in keeping with the brilliancy of his career in every step of life, whether in the school room or at the forum: whether his energies and abilities were tasked for the punishment of crime, or in the defense of the innocent; whether the civil warfare was in the criminal courts or the civil; whether to the jury or the judge, it was always waged with unabating energy, with distinguished ability and fidelity to the end. Mr. Douglass was a Mason, an Odd Fellow, a K. of P., a K. G. E., and a member of the National Union. In his church affiliation, he was a follower of Martin Luther. In 1895 he was married to Miss Ida Thompson, of which union two children were born, Dong Hughes and Ida Corrinne, all of whom survive him, except the dear boy, Don Hughes, who was laid to rest Nov. 12, 1901. Mr. Douglass is also survived by his brother, Judge S. M. Douglass, of this city, and his sister, Elizabeth Hazlett, of Ashland, besides a host of relatives and a myriad of friends. His love and fidelity to a devoted wife and their children was a predominating trait of his character and a tribute to his memory. With the passing of Mr. Douglass, the community has lost a worthy member and the bar of Ohio a leader who is without a peer. Douglass, Clyde -- Death claimed Clyde Douglass the three year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Douglass living three miles west of Shelby. The death of the little child occurred at 2 o'clock a.m. Sunday morning being caused by cholera infantum. The little boy would have been three years old in September. He was ill only two or three days. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 10 a.m. from the house conducted by Rev. H. C. Funk pastor of the First Lutheran church. Douglass, Herbert -- Shelby, O., Aug. 16 -- Herbert Douglass, the infant son of Mr. & Mrs. Arvine Douglass, was instantly killed at Hinesville, on the Toledo division of the Pennsylvania railroad, Tuesday. Douglass, Jane -- DIED -- At her residence in Sharon Township, on Friday, September 29th., 1871, Mrs. JANE DOUGLASS, widow of Jno. Douglass, deceased in the 70th. year of age. Funeral services were held at the Myers' Church, by Rev. J.F. Shearer, on Saturday. The deceased with her husband came from England about forty years ago; and resided with her family on the farm on which she lived at her death -- about thirty years. She connected herself with the Lutheran Church about 25 years ago, and ever since lived a consistent Christian life. Douglass, John J. -- Ex-Treasurer John J. Douglass peacefully passed away at 1:35 o'clock this afternoon, at his residence, No. 103 Marion Avenue. Mr. Douglass has for the past two years been in failing health, but it has been only a few weeks since was compelled to take to his bed. He suffered from a complication of diseases and for several days past and has been lying in a comatose state and although his death was momentarily expected it was thought he might hover at death's door for some weeks, but at the time above mentioned the angel of death beckoned and his spirit quietly took its flight to the other shore. At the death bed were present his children, Augustus A. and S.M. Douglass, of this city, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hazelett, of Bellville. John J. Douglass was born in Westmoreland County, Pa., December 22, 1821. His father's name was Samuel Douglass and his mother's maiden name was McCurdy. He was of Scotch-Irish descent. His father removed with his family to Worthington Township, this county, in November, 1829. They continued to reside there until March 1, 1831, when they removed to Monroe Township, where the elder Mr. Douglass purchased the southwest quarter of section 28, on which he settled with his family. As Samuel Douglass was a very energetic man, John J. Douglass, his only son, was not permitted to remain idle. He was naturally gifted with more than ordinary intelligence and was possessed of indomitable energy. He early qualified himself as a school teacher and followed that profession for a number of years. On January 1, 1850, he was married to Miss Sophia Schrack. With her he removed to the "old homestead", which, in the meantime, had become his property. For about ten years after the war Mr. Douglass was employed by the P.F.W.&C. railroad as walking auditor. Mr. Douglass was Richland County's auditor for two terms from 1856 to 1860. In 1882 the Democrats selected him as their candidate for County Treasurer. He was elected and in April of that year he moved his family to this city. He has also held numerous township offices and at the time of his death was a trustee of the Children's Home. Mr. Douglass was an Odd Fellow and had passed every chair in that organization. He also belonged to the Masonic fraternity, being a member of Mansfield Lodge, No. 35, of this city. Mr. Douglass was the father of four children: Prosecuting Attorney A.A. Douglass, ex-City Solicitor S.M. Douglass, both of this city; Mrs. Elizabeth Hazelett, of Bellville, and Olive, a daughter, who died in infancy. His beloved wife and helpmate died January 14th., 1892, after a short illness. Mr. Douglass had a large circle of friends who loved him in life and sincerely sympathize with his children in their sad affliction, the loss of a devoted parent. He was amiable in business and was possessed of pluck and energy which enabled him to rise from a humble station to one of honor and trust. In his death Richland County loses a citizen whose place will not soon be filled. The funeral services will be held Friday at the residence at 1:30 o'clock (local time) and at 2 o'clock at the First English Lutheran church, of which the deceased has been a member for 25 years. Douglass, Michael -- Michael Douglass, aged 80 years, died Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6:25 p.m., at his home at 298 West Fourth Street. Mr. Douglass had been a sufferer for many years and his death was caused from a complication of diseases. he was born in Springfield Township, Richland County, October 21, 1834, and had resided in this county all his life. There are few citizens that have done more good for the city than Mr. Douglass. He was admitted to the bar in 1860, but was soon afterward elected secretary of the Richland Mutual Insurance Company, a position which he held for 10 years. He was one of the organizers of the Merchants and Manufacturers Insurance Company and became secretary of this company in 1876, and continued in this capacity throughout his life. In 1868 he served as mayor of this city and was a capable and efficient officer. Mr. Douglass was captain of Company G. of the Twelfth Ohio Cavalry during the civil war and was a brave and loyal soldier. He was a member of McLaughlin post G.A.R. and of the Odd Fellows. He is survived by his wife, one son, L.E. Douglass of Los Angeles, Cal., and two daughters, Mrs. J.E. Gibson and Mrs. Henry C. Hedges of this city. Douglass, Nellie -- Bellville. Another pioneer mother is gone. "Grandma" Nellie Douglass for fifty years or more a resident of Monroe Township, died at her late home on 30th. ult. in her ninety-second year. Douglass, Sophia (Schrack) -- The public generally will be grieved to learn that Mrs. Sophia Douglass, wife of Ex-County Treasurer J.J. Douglass, well known all over the county, died at the family residence on Marion Avenue about 9:30 last night. The deceased had been for some time the victim of ills attending old age, but was supposed to be recovering and felt much better than usual yesterday. In the evening, however, she was attacked with heart failure and rapidly grew worse, expiring at the hour above named. Mrs. Douglass, nee Schrack, was born in Monroe Township, this county, a little over 63 years ago. In 1850 she was married to Mr. Douglass. She was the mother of four children, three of whom, Prosecuting Attorney A.A. Douglass and Ex-City Solicitor S.M. Douglass, of this city, and Mrs. Elizabeth Hazlett, of Independence, with their father, survive her. For many years she was a member of the Christian church, but nine years ago attached herself to the Baptist church of this city, which she has ever since remained a faithful adherent. The funeral services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. H.A. Sumrell officiating, assisted by Dr. H.L. Wiles. Interment in the Mansfield Cemetery. Douglass, Sophia (Schrack) -- Sophia (Schrack) Douglass was born in Monroe Township, Richland County, Ohio, November 26th., A.D. 1828; she died at her home, 38 Marion Avenue, in the city of Mansfield on January 14th., 1892, at 9:30 p.m. She was married to John J. Douglass, January 1st., A.D. 1850, at Mansfield by Rev. James Johnson at his residence, situated on the site now occupied by the Web Factory on Park Avenue East. She was the mother of of four children, namely: A.A. Douglass, S.M. Douglass, -ary E. Hazlett and Olive Douglass, the three former surviving her, the latter having died in infancy. In the spring following her marriage, she, with her husband, located on a farm of 80 acres in Monroe township, only 35 acres of which was then cleared. She endured many of the hardships and deprivations of pioneer life; by her frugality and earnest toil she aided her husband in not only making fit for the plow every acre of their early home, but helped to add more thereto. On the 19th. day of April, 1883, she, with her husband, left their country home, the fruit of their years of labor, and moved to this city, to the place where she resided at the time of her death. A most peculiar coincidence connected with her decease was the fact that two of her sisters died within a few days of her death, viz.: Mrs. Anna McDanel of Columbia City, Ind., aged 51 years, being one and Mary Jefferies of Sevastopol, Ind., aged 73 years, being the other. Mrs. Douglass was the seventh daughter of a family of twelve children of David and Elizabeth Schrack, who emigrated to this country at a very early day. Mrs. Douglass was a pure and exemplary Christian woman. She raised her children in the belief of the Savior, never missing an opportunity to impress upon them the necessity of an upright life; for a number of years she was a member of the Disciple church, but in 1883 she united with the Baptist church of this city. This was her chosen church and of which she was a devoted sincere and loyal member. Her enthusiasm for the principles of her church, her unalloyed belief in the Savior of mankind could not be questioned. As a mother it is enough to say that by her children she was idolized and that her loving kindness is stamped indelibly on their memories. She was a good and kind mother, entitled to the grateful benedictions of her children. As a neighbor she observed the Golden Rule in a practical manner. During her short illness, her death and burial, many acts of kindness were done and proffered by those of her neighbors that fully showed their high appreciation of her and her life work, none of which kind acts can by the family left behind, ever be forgotten. Dow, Mrs. George -- While visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Minstrel, of Homestead, Pa., formerly Miss Mary Dow of this city, Mrs. Harriet Dow, of 179 East Fourth Street, was stricken with paralysis of the right side two weeks ago, from which she died at 8 o'clock this morning. Mrs. Dow had been visiting at the Minstrel home for the past four weeks. She was 48 years old and leaves one daughter, Mrs. George Minstrel, and one son, John Dow, the latter of this city. She also leaves four brothers, Joseph Page, of Elyria; and James, Charles and Frank Page, of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Bridgeland, of Bellville, and Mrs. Robert Brooker, of this city. Downing, James W. Sr. -- James W. Downing, Sr., who has been a resident of Butler for nearly half a century, died Saturday about 6 a.m., aged 79 years, 4 months and 5 days, after only a few days illness. Although his health has been very feeble for the past few months, the direct cause of his death was hernia, for which an operation was performed last Thursday. The funeral took place Sunday at 2 p.m. and services were conducted at the Evangelical church by Rev. E. Radabaugh, and interment was made in the Butler Cemetery. Sturges Lodge, No. 357 I.O.O.F., of which order deceased was a member for many years, conducted appropriate ritualistic services over the remains of their dead brother. James W. Downing was born in Virginia, Nov. 23, 1823, and came to Ohio in 1851. For nearly the entire time of his residence in Butler, he was engaged in the mercantile business from which he retired some years ago. Deceased served in the Mexican War, having enlisted July 29, 1846, with Gen. Scott's command. He was at the storming of Chapultupec, and was one of the two men from his company to respond to a call for men when the ascent was made upon the garrison. For distinguished services during this assault, he received a "Certificate of Merit" engrossed on parchment signed by James K. Polk, President, and W.L. Marcy, Secretary of War. Deceased joined the Odd Fellows in Virginia in 1847. He leaves a wife and four children -- Mrs. I. Shaffer, Mrs. Geo. Clapper and G.R. Downing, of Butler, and James Downing, of Mansfield. Downs, Gerald E. -- Gerald E. Downs, 81, of Shelby, Ohio died at home Thursday morning, November 6, 2003. He went home to be with his Lord after a long battle with cancer. Mr. Downs was born September 28, 1922 in Ontario, Ohio residing in the area all of his life. He was employed with Ohio Edison and Howley Company of Vermillion. He retired from Schmidt Security after several years at the gatehouse of Ohio Steel Tube in Shelby. He was active in the First Church of God in Shelby. He was an avid traveler and he and his wife traveled full time in an RV for 6 years seeing Gods beautiful America. He was also active with the Mid-Ohio Winnies RV group for many years. Downs, William -- William Downs, who resides on a farm near Ontario, died at his home at 4 o'clock this morning. His death was sudden and unlooked for. Apparently he was in as good health when he retired last night as he had ever been, but at 4 o'clock he was taken with a fainting spell and died in a few minutes. The deceased was about 65 years of age and was a resident of this city for many years, during which time he worked in the Aultman-Taylor carpenter shop. Death was caused by heart disease. Downs, William -- Wm. Downs died in bed this morning of heart disease. Himself and wife resided last night at their home, 3½ miles west of the city on the Galion Road, at the usual hour, and the deceased was apparently in the best of health. Shortly before 4 o'clock this morning his wife was awakened by his heavy breathing. She arose with the intention of lighting a lamp, but before she returned to the bedside her husband was dead. Mr. Downs was born in 1827 and was, therefore, 62 years old. When only a mere lad he went with Capt. McLaughlin's company to Mexico, where he served during the Mexican War, returning to this city at its close. In 1861 the deceased again responded to the call of his country and enlisted under his old commander in the McLaughlin squadron. Here he remained during the whole four years of conflict and, although a veteran of two wars, he never was wounded. He was a carpenter by trade and was employed at the A.-T. works for a number of years, during which time, he resided on Park Avenue East. He moved to his late home about three years ago. The funeral will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, Rev. N.S. Albright officiating. The funeral will be at the Memorial Building between the hours of 2:30 and 3 o'clock. Doyle, Eugene Francis -- Ontario- Eugene Francis Doyle, 62, of 2518 Ferguson Road died unexpectedly Wednesday in Henry Hospital in Stockbridge, Ga.. He was born Feb. 24, 1929 in Youngstown and had lived in Mansfield for the past 22 years. Mr. Doyle had retired from the United Telephone Co. in 1990. He was a 1947 graduate of Rayen High School and a 1965 graduate of Youngstown State University. Mr. Doyle was a member of AMVETS Post 26 and American Legion Post 16. A member of the Mansfield Liederkranz, he was the golf league champion of the organization in 1989. Mr. Doyle was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served from 1949 to 1951.Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Gregory Doyle; four daughters, Katherine Kauf of Merritt Island, Fla., Joanne Otterbacher of Cardington, Mary Doyle Kurtz of Worthington and Dr.Barbara Doyle of Houston, Texas, a son, Robert Doyle of Versailles, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother John Doyle of Youngstown; seven sisters, Mary Deitrich of Boca Raton, Fla., Ruth Sheets of Granada Hills, Calif., Patricia Edwards of Fremont, Calif., Rita Schmid of Covina, Calif., Jane Doyle of St. Paul, Minn., Eileen Ciolli of Youngstown, Betty DiGiamco of San Antonio, Texas; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Drake, Phineas -- The funeral of Phineas Drake, who died Saturday afternoon, was held Monday at 2 p.m. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. Dr. H.L. Wiles. Phineas Drake was born 74 years ago in the sate of New Jersey. When 24 years old he removed to this city and resided here continuously ever since, having been a resident of Mansfield for over 50 years. On account of his advanced age his health had been failing for some time. Four years ago he sustained a slight stroke of paralysis, from the effects of which he never entirely recovered. As a result of a fall sustained about two years ago, he had not been able to walk without the aid of crutches. His death occurred at 5 o'clock Saturday afternoon. He leaves eight children: Joseph H. Drake of Newark; Mrs. George Marks, Mrs. Charles Nash, Mrs. Harvey Gorham, Meade R. Drennan, Manuel J. -- Professor Manuel J. Drennan, brother of our late townsman, William W. Drennan, and of Mrs. Artie McDonough, died at the home of his niece, Mrs. Wm. Hudson Harper, Monday, August 31, 1914, and was brought to Plymouth and laid to rest with his father and mother, brother and sister, in Greenlawn Cemetery, Friday morning, Sept. 3, 1914. He was born in Plymouth, Ohio, Sept. 25, 1833. His studious tendencies guided him to Oberlin College, from which he graduated, afterward studying at the University of Halle, Germany. He heeded the call of the church by preparing for the Presbyterian ministry at Union Theological Seminary, New York. Among his early services was a pastorate at Madison, Indiana, and work as a teacher in Hanover College in that city. Later his growing scholarship commended him to the publishers of Appleton's Encyclopedia, from this employment being invited to Harvard University as an instructor in the department of English. Here were valued days in the company of President Eliot, Prof. Barrett Wendell, Prof. William James, Prof. Dyer, Dean Briggs, Prof. Palmer, and here were founded memories which the careers of various esteemed pupils sustained in after years. In 1883 Professor Drennan was called to Vassar College to become dean of the English department, where he remained twelve years, this period of service being followed after an interval, in the closing of his life as a teacher, by a year at Fisk University, Nashville. Professor Drennan had not married, and so in his later days, as throughout his life, his chief interest was in his books. His literary tastes and attainments were classical, rather than contemporary, his scholarship seeking refreshments in English, German and French masters, in Anglo-Saxon and sociological science too. As a writer and conversationalist he was a purist, and his deportment was marked by the amiability and courtesy which tradition still treasures as characteristic of a gentleman of the old school. He was of Revolutionary lineage, of Irish and Dutch stock. His nearest of kin elsewhere resident are his nieces, Mrs. Wm. H. Harper of Evanston, Ill., Mrs. W.J. Geer of Galion, Ohio, his nephews, John P. Drennan of Decatur, Ill. and from Plymouth, G.B. Drennan and Robt. Drennan, William W. -- Monday. Wm. W. Drennan, aged 77 years, died this morning at his home in Plymouth. Mr. Drennan was for many years a prominent merchant in Plymouth and later practiced law. For some years he was Justice of the Peace of Plymouth Township. He leaves a wife and two children. Drennan, William W. -- Plymouth. The funeral of Wm. W. Drennan was held Wednesday afternoon at the Presbyterian church. It was largely attended by his old friends and neighbors. The discourse was preached by Rev. A.B. Wilson, of the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Drennan was a member for about 50 years. At the time of his death Mr. Drennan was the oldest resident of Plymouth, coming to town in 1825, when it had about a dozen houses. He was 77 years of age. He was engaged in the dry goods trade while a young man, and later in life was an attorney-at-law. Judge May, Gen. R. Brinkerhoff and J.H. Cook, of Mansfield, and Judge Wickham and Attorney A.M. Drew, Obed -- Died -- Obed Drew, Nov. 4th., 1888, at Newton, Iowa. The deceased was for twenty-five years or more a resident of Jefferson Township, and very well known in this village. In '61 he removed with his family to Newton, Iowa, but never failed to make an annual visit to Bellville and vicinity as long as his parents lived. Driscoll, Mary -- Mrs. Mary Driscoll, widow of the late Jeremiah Driscoll, died Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at her home, 222 Harker Street, aged 52 years. She leaves two sons, John J. Driscoll and William Driscoll, and two daughters, Margaret and Minnie Driscoll. Another son, Charles S. Driscoll, was killed some months ago by being struck by an engine on the Erie near Condon. Driscoll, Mary Jeanette -- Mary Jeanette Driscoll died at her home at 322 Harker Street, Sunday morning at 11:30 after a long illness with heart trouble. Dronberger, Ebenezer -- Plymouth. The funeral of the late Ebenezer Dronberger was held from the family residence on Sandusky street, Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Dudley, Henry -- Corsica. A postmortem exanimation was held over the body of the late 'Squire Dudley, at his late residence in Bloominggrove on Saturday morning at 9 o'clock by our village doctors, Carris and McFarland, and Doctors Ridgeway, Hackedorn and Marsh, of Galion. The case was such a peculiar one that the physicians were not able to exactly determine the cause of his death. The deceased had been a sufferer from some form of heart trouble for a number of years. Duffner, Laura -- Rome. There was one death in the village from diphtheria last week. Laura, oldest child of Sylvester Duffner, died at 5:30 Monday morning, and was buried at 4 o'clock the same day. DuFrainoit, Janet D. (Wilcox) -- Mrs. Janet D. DuFrainoit, relict of H. DuFrainoit, died at her residence north of the city yesterday morning of heart disease and dropsy, after an illness of only a few days. The deceased's maiden name was Wilcox. She was born in Philadelphia, Pa., Jan. 1st., 1812, and in 1827 married H. DuFrainoit. In 1857 they removed to this county. The husband died at the residence north of the city in 1881. Mrs. DuFrainoit leaves seven children to mourn her death as follows: A.S. DuFrainoit, Mrs. Elizabeth Ax and Mrs. E.L. Jennings, city; Mrs. J.C. Thompson and Miss Grace Saner, of Columbus; Mrs. Alice Baxter, of Wooster, and Edward DuFrainoit, of Baltimore. For many years the deceased was a consistent Christian, being a member of the Episcopal church. The funeral will be held from the residence at 1:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, Rev. H.L. Dukes, Nancy -- Mrs. Nancy Dukes, wife of Theodore W. Dukes, died at noon today at her home, 111 Sturges Avenue. Mrs. Dukes has been an invalid for the past 20 years and has undergone a great deal of suffering. She grew worse during the past few days and passed away today. She was 68 years of age and leaves a husband and one daughter, Mrs. Robert Steinruck, of Sturges Avenue. She also leaves two brothers, Joseph and John Leach, of this city; and four sisters, Mrs. Margaret Newlon, Mrs. Henry Niman, Mrs. Jonas Smith, of this city, and Mrs. Thomas Smith, of Newark. Dukes, Zeb -- Monday. Zeb Dukes aged about 30, died at Rochester, N.Y., yesterday, of consumption. The deceased was a son of W.T. Dukes of Sturges Avenue and leaves a wife. The remains arrived in this city at 9:45 this morning. Mr. Dukes was a member of Mansfield Lodge, No. 19, I.O.O.F. A special meeting of the lodge will be held this evening for the purpose of arranging for the funeral, which will be held tomorrow. The deceased was well known here and had many friends. Dull, John C. -- John C. Dull, a respected citizen of Mansfield for more than 10 years, died at 11:30 o'clock Saturday night at his home, 131 E. First Street, after an illness of about a month. The cause of his death was consumption of the stomach. Mr. Dull was born at Lebanon, Pa., 69 years ago and spent the earlier years of his life there. Some years later he removed to this city, where he has since resided. He was married to Miss Agnes Heisler, who, with six sons and five daughters, survives him. The sons are John of Toledo, Albert of Memphis, Tenn., Elmer of Chicago, and George, Wilbur and Lawrence of this city. The daughters are Mrs. Lizzie Farst and Miss Clara Dull of Toledo, Mrs. Anna Figley and Misses Esther and Laura Dull, of this city. Since 1875 Mr. Dull has been assessor in his ward which was first the Fourth Ward, then the Ninth Ward. He has been a member of the Lutheran church for many years. Duncan, David W. Sr. -- David W. Duncan Sr., 69, of 65 South Gamble St., Shelby died unexpectedly at his home Friday evening. Born in Detroit on Feb. 5, 1909, Mr. Duncan had lived in this area for 50 years. He retired from the Richland County Highway Department in 1975 and was a member of Shelby Moose Lodge 422. Surviving are four sons, David W. Jr., and Robert B. both of Shelby, and Arthur K. and Gordon M., both of Mansfield; three daughters, Mrs. William (Gloria) Hubbard and Mrs. Earnest (Frances) Hamm, both of Mansfield, and Mrs. Calvin (Cherlann) Price of San Antonia, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mamie Duncan of Mansfield, Mrs. Loar Craig of Orlando, Fla., and Mrs. Davina Slater of Wooster. Dunkle, Elizabeth (Kissel) -- Bellville. Mrs. Elizabeth Kissel Dunkle, one of Richland County's oldest residents, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. B.F. Dunkle, Frank -- A young man by the name of Frank Dunkle, aged 23 years, left here last Friday night at 11 o'clock on the B. & O. train to visit relations in Shelby. In getting off the train in East Shelby, while it was yet in motion, he was thrown under the wheels of the cars and terribly wounded, only living a few hours afterward. Mr. Dunkle had been working this summer for John F. Lewis and others residing north of Mansfield, where he had formed many warm friends, and was to have been married on the 17th. of October to a young lady residing in Johns' Addition. He was buried in Shelby last Sabbath afternoon by the Third Ohio National Guards. This is another warning to persons getting off and on the cars while the same are in motion. Dunkle, John -- Friday. John Dunkle, aged eighty years, three months and eight days, died at his home on Washington Avenue at 4 o'clock this morning of old age. The deceased has been a resident of this city only a short period, previous to which time he resided for many years four miles west of the city. Mr. Dunkle, who was known for his Christian charity, leaves a wife and two children, Mrs. B.F. Keiser, of this city, and Mrs. Charles Hutchinson, of Shelby. Dunlap, Robert -- Tuesday. Rev. J.A. Dunlap received a message at noon from York, Pa., announcing the sad news of the very sudden death of his father, Hon. Robert Dunlap. The deceased was 73 years old and had been in the Mexican War and had represented the Democratic party of his county in the state Legislature and was once county treasurer. Rev. Dunlap, Thomas -- Monday. The SHIELD regrets to learn of the death, last Friday, of Mr. Thomas Dunlap, who lived in Plymouth Township, three miles north of Shelby. Dunlap, W.C. -- DIED -- At Orange, Ashland County, O., on Sunday January 31, 1869, Mr. W.C. DUNLAP, aged about 27 years. His remains were brought to Shelby for burial, on Wednesday of last week. Mr. Dunlap was formerly from Plymouth Township, and was a member of Co. "K", 66th. Illinois Volunteers, and served over 3 years in the army. He was wounded at Atlanta, Georgia, on account of which, we obtained a pension for him several years ago. He was a very worthy young man -- highly esteemed by all who knew him. Dunmire, Abner M. -- Abner M. Dunmire, 90, died at the home of his granddaughter Mrs. Frank Volz, 95 Beethoven street, early today. Born in Berlin in Holmes county Jan. 14, 1844, he moved to Knox county in 1852, coming to the vicinity 21 years ago. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. He is survived by three sons, Earl of Mansfield, Otho of Mr. Vernon and John of Iowa, and one daughter, Mrs. James Arnold of this city, also 11 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was the last member of a family of 13 children. The body was removed to the Wappner funeral home where short services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday and at the North Liberty M. Dunn, Andrew J. -- Mansfield, June 28. Andrew J. Dunn, for twelve years a conductor on the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, and well known to many Mansfield people, fell between the cars of a moving train on the Louisville & Nashville railroad, five miles north of Birmingham, Ala., at noon yesterday, and was crushed to death. His body was mangled in a horrible manner. He had been a brakeman on that road for some time. Dunn, Andrew K. -- Judge Andrew K. Dunn, of Mt. Gilead [Morrow Co.], died at his home at 10 o'clock this morning at the advanced age of 72 years. Dunn, Loyd L. -- Loyd L. Dunn, 81, of 206 North Illinois Ave., Mansfield, formerly of Rt. 1, Butler, died May 23 in the Walter Shelton residence at 41 Main St., Butler. Mr. Dunn was born Sept. 3, 1902, in Knox County and had lived the greater part of his life in the Butler area. He was a retired employee of J.A. Reeder and Son Lumber in Butler with 40 years of service. He attended the Pine Run Church of God in Ashland County. He is survived by four sons, James L. Shelby, George E. of Dewey, Ariz. and Robert D. and John R. of Butler; one daughter, Mrs. Ann Fox of Mansfield; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Ray of Butler, and two sisters, Mrs. Virgil (Mary) McFadden of Butler and Mrs. Paul (Ruby) Kunkel of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his wife Minnie, in 1975. Services were Friday at the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home with the Rev. John Pennell, pastor of the Pine Run Church of God officiating. Dunn, Minnie -- Services were conducted Wednesday at the Bunker Hill Baptist Church near Butler for Mrs. Minnie Dunn, 62, of Rt. 1, Butler. She was dead on arrival at Mansfield General Hospital Sunday evening, Aug. 10, after suffering an apparent heart attack at her home. Mrs. Dunn was born in Polk County, Ga., and moved to the Butler area 38 years ago. She was a member of the Bunker Hill Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, Lloyd; four sons, Robert, George and John, all of Butler, and James of Shelby; one daughter, Mrs. Claude (Ann) Fox of Mansfield; four brothers, C. Haywood Wallace, George Wallace, and Willie Wallace and Floyd Hill, all of Georgia; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Dunnavant, Harry -- Harry Dunnavant, aged 32 years, died at his home, No. 205 North Main Street, shortly after 1 o'clock this morning. The deceased was born at Sidney, O., Jan. 11, 1860, and came to this city in 1882. Shortly afterward he entered the employ of the Erie railroad company in the capacity of yard man, but was subsequently placed in charge of the baggage department of his company at this point, which position he held up to within six months of his death. His obliging ways and genial manner won him many friends and he was known by thousands of the traveling public. Mr. Dunnavant was an enthusiastic and life-long Democrat, was well posted upon all the leading questions of the day. On December 6, 1882, the subject of this sketch was married to Miss Effie Hart, who, with two children survive him. The deceased was conscious to within six hours of death when he became delirious and continued in that condition until within a few minutes of the last, when another change took place and he passed peacefully away. The funeral will take place from the family residence Sunday, at 2 o'clock p.m., the Rev. R.T. Stevenson officiating. Mrs. W.D. Waldorf, of Loudonville, a sister of the deceased, and W.W. Dunshee, Della (Cleland) -- Mrs. Eugene Dushee [sic.] died of heart trouble at her home near Lexington Sunday. She was well known here and leaves a husband and two children. She was a cousin of B.&O. Dunshee, Della (Cleland) -- Lexington. The Rev. Dr. Wiles officiated Tuesday at the last sad rites of Mrs. Eugene Dunshee, who died Sunday night at her home two miles south of here, aged 39 years. Her maiden name was Della Cleland and she was married here in January, 1882, and her husband and son and daughter felt that a light of love and joy was extinguished when her feeble flame of life expired. She was ill many months and was in Cleveland for treatment in December and keenly anguished were the hearts of her many friends when death stilled forever her eloquent tongue. Mrs. Dunshee was of commanding presence and with her learning and strong mentality she combined grace and manner and conversation that made her presence a joy and inspiration in social and intellectual circles. Her home was an intellectual center and her words of wisdom were often heard on the rostrum and at various functions in the county. Dunshee, Thomas -- Monday. The SHIELD learns with sincere regret of the death of one of its most esteemed friends, Thomas Dunshee, who died at his home in Troy Township on Saturday, aged about 71 years. His death was caused by paralysis. Mr. Dunshee was one of the old pioneers of Richland County, a highly respected citizen and leaves many friends to mourn his death. The funeral took place today. Dunshee, Thomas Eugene -- LEXINGTON MAN TAKES OWN LIFE -- Thomas Eugene Dunshee, aged 63 years, retired farmer and one of the most prominent men in Lexington, took his own life yesterday morning by jumping from the Main street bridge in that village into the Clearfork. John Castor who resides just east of the bridge saw what he thought to be clothing in the water early in the morning but thought nothing of it until he learned that Mr. Dunshee had been missing from his home since early morning, and upon investigation it was found to be the body of the unfortunate man. The body was removed from the stream and taken to the Benham undertaking parlors to be prepared for burial. Coroner LeBarre conducted an inquest which developed the fact that Mr. Dunshee had been in ill health for several months and had worried to such an extent that friends believed him to be demented at different intervals. It is also believed that during these periods he contemplated self destruction from conversations he had with different business men in the village. Mr. Dunshee had lived in Troy township and Lexington for the past 50 years, a number of years ago retiring from the farm and moving to Lexington. Since that time he had held almost every elective office in the village. He is survived by his wife, one son, Claud, and one daughter, Mrs. Samuel Cureton, both of Lexington. Duntz, ---- -- Sandusky Twp. A fatal accident occurred in the south part of the township last Thursday about noon. Mr. Duntz, of Galion, drove to his farm at the above named place to show Mr. Stone some sheep which he had for sale, but in order to get to where the sheep were they had to go down quite a steep grade whereupon one of the thill straps broke allowing the buggy to run against the horse's heels causing him to kick, striking Mr. Duntz in the breast just over the heart, causing almost instant death. Herbold's ambulance was dispatched for and was soon upon the scene of the fatality taking the remains to Mr. Duntz's late residence in Galion. [Semi-Weekly News: 04 June 1897, Vol. 13, No. 45]

Dupre, Lottie -- Miss Lottie Dupre died Sunday evening at 8:00 at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Benjamin H. Patterson, 35 High street. She was 23 years of age and the cause of her death was consumption. She was the daughter of Benedict Dupre, of West Fifth Street. Miss Dupre was a member of Richland Queen council No. 55, of the Daughters of Pocahontas. Funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2:00 at the First Lutheran church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. H.L. Wiles. Durant, Walter -- Walter P. (Dewey) Durant, one-time pro-baseball player and coach of championship winning youth teams in the area, died Monday at Mansfield General Hospital following a short illness. Mr. Durant was 77 years old and lived at 344 West Sixth St. in Mansfield. He was well known locally as a coach of junior baseball teams. He managed the McVey Post junior baseball team for 35 years and held form a junior baseball team for Bellville's American Legion Post 535. Mr. Durant was also a member of the Legion's Fifth District Baseball Commission. His teams were consistent district championship winners in the 1940's. Funeral services will be Thursday (today) at 1 p.m. at the Diamond St. home of Wappner Funeral Directors, conducted by Rev. Robert Barr, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Mansfield. Durban, Mary J. -- Mrs. Mary J. Durban, mother of Thomas Durban, of this city, died Friday evening at her home in Zanesville after a long illness. she has been seriously ill since last May. She was 78 years old and the mother of the Hon. Frank A. Durban, a prominent Republican politician of Zanesville. The other children are Mrs. Charles C. Williams, of Indianapolis, Mrs. E.S. Durbin, Floyd -- Floyd Durbin, 90, of 174 Huron St., Bellville, died Monday morning in Peoples Hospital following a long illness. Mr. Durbin was a lifelong resident of the Bellville area and had been employed at the Empire-Detroit Steel Co. for a number of years before his retirement. Surviving is a brother, Clark, of Columbus. Durbin, John -- Bellville. John Durbin died at his home three miles east of this place Wednesday morning, aged 72 years. Durbin, John -- With 102 years, 10 months and 4 days to his credit, the venerable John Durbin, of this county, closed his eyes in death yesterday morning. He had been ailing a good deal for the past week and became seriously ill during the forty-eight hours preceding his demise, which came peacefully and happily at last. The unwonted age to which he had attained made a conspicuous figure in Willamette Valley history, aside from the intimate relation he bore personally in the making of that history, by deed and word, through the fifty-two years of his career sent in this part of the world. For the past four years decedent has lived at the home of Duncan Ross, a grandson-in-law, near Howell Prairie, and has moved about but little during that period, the most notable departure from this rule being the visit he made in September, 1894, to the home of his son, Solomon, three miles east of Salem, where, on the 13th. day of that month five generations of his descendants celebrated the centennial anniversary of the patriarch's birth, by a splendid reunion and banquet, in itself one of the historical incidents in the annals of Marion County. At this great function the centenarian accomplished the extraordinary feat of beating his niece, Mrs. Farley, of Dallas, in a foot race from the front door to the gate, his success proving how well maintained was the superb physical strength that had been his through life. John Durbin was born near Brownsville, Fayette County, Pa., on September 13, 1794 and in 1800 moved with his family to Richland County, Ohio, where in 1820, he was married to Sarah Fitting. They lived together until about three years ago, when she, at the age of 92, passed to the other shore to await his coming. Of this union there were ten children, Casper J., Rebecca, Fanny A., John and Sarah (twins), Solomon, Isaac and Daniel (twins), Mary J. and Ruth A. The family moved from Ohio to Hancock County, Illinois, in 1842, but in the same year moved to Clayton County, Missouri, from which place they came to Marion County, Oregon, in the spring of 1845, where the family have prospered and multiplied ever since. Durbin, John -- Death came suddenly to John Durbin, middle aged farmer residing south of town, when pneumonia claimed him as a victim at six o'clock last Thursday morning. Mr. Durbin who lived alone with his father, Dow Durbin, suffered an attack of influenza last week, and in his determination to save his father brought on the pneumonia by undue exposure. Efforts to save his life by rushing him to the Mansfield General hospital proved unavailing. Mr. Durbin was born on September 4, 1878 on a farm near Bellville and spent his entire life in Richland County. He lived at home and assisted his father in farming operations. He was known as "honest John" to his many friends. Surviving relatives are seven brothers, Leander, seriously ill in Mansfield hospital, Hanson of Toledo, Laurence of Detroit, Michigan, Omar and Floyd of Bellville, Corbet of Reedsburg and Clark of Hebron; three sisters, Mrs. Ada Swartz of Mansfield, Mrs. Zora Ross of Bellville and Mrs. June Johnson of Dallas, Texas. The father L.D. Durbin did not long survive the son, passing away Sunday night at 11:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held Sunday at 1:30 P.M. at the A.A. Shafer funeral home with Rev. Joseph M. Durbin, Leonard Dow -- Leonard Dow Durbin, aged 81 years, native of Jefferson Township, and highly respected farmer, succumbed to an attack of pneumonia on Sunday evening at 11:30 o'clock. Death was believed to have been hastened by the shock caused from the death of his son John, the preceding Thursday. Dow Durbin was born on a farm south of Bellville on December 10, 1849, and spent his entire life in Jefferson township. He was the great grandson of Scott Durbin who came to Ohio as early as 1804 and settled near Bellville in 1812. Durbin Ave. takes its name from this first ancestor of the Durbin line. On December 23, 1875, he was married to Mary Elizabeth Teeter and to this union were born eleven children. Mr. Durbin was engaged as a farmer throughout his entire life. During his younger days, he acted as township trustee and supervisor and was also a member of the board of education at the Red Brush school. He was a member of the Evangelical church at Mt. Carmel while that organization existed. For many years he was a very active worker in the Grange, and retained his membership in that organization until his death. He was also a stockholder in The Bellville Savings Bank. Surviving are seven sons, Leander, seriously ill in Mansfield hospital, Hanson of Toledo, Lawrence of Detroit, Michigan, Omar and Floyd of Bellville, Corbet of Reedsburg, and Clark of Hebron; three daughters, Mrs. Ada Swartz, of Mansfield, Mrs. Zora Ross of Bellville and Mrs. Juno Johnson of Dallas, Texas, eleven grandchildren, seven brothers, Geo. W. Durbin of Bellville, Samuel of Johnsville, Joseph J. of Kansas, Aaron of Colorado and James C. of near Butler. Mrs. Durbin died three years ago on August 17, 1927. A prayer service for the relatives was held at the Shafer funeral home at 1:30 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock at the Four Corners church between Bellville and Butler, with Rev. Archibald officiating. A quartet from the church sang "The Old Rugged Cross", "I Shall Be Satisfied" and "Lead Me Greatly On". A.A. Shafer was in charge of arrangements. Burial was made in the Four Corners cemetery. Durbin, Mary Nancy -- Mary Nancy Durbin, 92, formerly of rear 176 Markey St., Bellville, died last Thursday afternoon in Hillcrest Nursing Home following an extended illness. Miss Durbin was born March 23, 1895 near Bellville to George and Elizabeth Garber Durbin. She was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati School of Nursing. She was a nursing instructor at New York State Islip Hospital School of Nursing. She returned to Bellville after her retirement 30 years ago. She was a member of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Bellville, Jefferson Grange and the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Surviving are two nieces, Eulala Woodward of Bellville and Lepha Swank of Worthington; two nephews, George Durbin of Bellville and Donald Durbin of Centerburg; and a number of great-nieces and great-nephews. Dyer, Orrin P. -- On the morning of July 15, 1905, occurred the death of Bro. Orrin P. Dyer, of Mt. Vernon. Brother Dyer had been in poor health for a year and a half and gradually grew worse and weaker until the time came when God in his wisdom seen feet to call him from this life to another. Deceased was born in Richland Co., Ohio, Apr. 15, 1825, and at the time of his death was 80 years and 3 months old. He is survived by 5 children -- 2 boys and 3 girls, and one granddaughter. He was a charter member of Owl Creek Lodge No. 686, I.O.O.F., located at Waterford. Brother Dyer, until a few recent years had resided on his farm near Bangorville, and had many friends surrounding his home. Before the funeral left the home a few of the Odd Fellows of Mt. Vernon had a short burial ceremony. Funeral services were conducted at the Perry Church July 17, the Rev. Spicer, of Attica, officiating. His remains were laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at the Perry Church. And now we leave our deceased brother with pleasant remembrance of him and we will always try and cherish a fond memory of him. The Lord gave and the Lord hath taken away. Dyer, Samuel -- From a private letter to Rev. Isaac Leedy we learn that Samuel B. Dyer, the oldest brother of Dr. S.P. Dyer, of Bellville, died at his residence in Tennessee, about the 14th. of last month. The cause of his death was injuries received from a falling tree. He employed persons to do some chopping on his farm, and he was picking brush about the tree at which they were at work, and when it fell he was in the way. He lived about ten days after the accident. He formerly resided in Perry Township, this county near Bangor, where he was brought up and resided the greater part of his life. He lived a bachelor many years, but some years ago he married Mary A. Hursberger [Harsberger] and was the father of several children. He advised his family to move to this locality after his death. He moved to Tennessee a few years ago. O.P. Dysart, Caroline -- LEXINGTON -- The remains of the late Miss Caroline Dysart, former resident of this place, who died at her home in Dubuque, Ia., Wednesday, December 8, arrived at Mansfield Saturday morning and were taken to Niman's Undertaking parlors, after which they were brought to Lexington, where a short service was conducted by the Rev. Arthur T. Reasoner, of Grace Episcopal church, of Mansfield. She leaves one brother, Rev. Dr. John Dysart. Mrs. Charlie Miller and daughter, Mrs. Victor G. Sowers and Dr. Charles G. Zion Cemetery. Dorothy C. Dyson, 99, of Mansfield died early Saturday morning, November 9, 2002 at Mansfield Memorial Homes following an extended illness. Mrs. Dyson was born December 27, 1902 in Crimson, Ohio and was an area resident all her life. She was a homemaker who was noted for her cooking and pie baking skills. Dorothy loved animals of all kinds and attended the First Church of the Brethren where she was in the Ladies Missionary. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Dorothy Louise Hupp and Ann and Alex Bosko, all of Mansfield; two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Dolores Dyson and Jack and Janet Dyson, all of Mansfield; ten grandchildren; twenty-nine great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a sister, Helen Snook Crawford of North Carolina; a sister-in-law, Anna Morgan of Mansfield; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles William and Mervilla Wagaman Snook; husband, Robert T. Dyson, whom she married July 3, 1928 and who died February 21, 1981; two brothers; one sister; one great-grandson, Christopher Smalley; and several well loved dogs. Dyson, Robert T. -- Robert T. Dyson, 84 of 59 North Street died unexpectedly Saturday morning, February 21, at home. He was born Jan. 14,1897, in Coatesville, PA , and had lived in Mansfield most of his life. Mr. Dyson retired from Empire-Detroit Steel after 44 years as a steelworker. He was a member of VFW Post 3494 and was a World War I Veteran, serving as a sergeant in the 39th Infantry, 4th Division. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy C., two sons, Howard T. of Mansfield, and Jack E. of Los Alamos, NM, two daughters Ann M. Bosko and Dorothy Hupp both of Mansfield. 10 grandchildren, seven great grand children, one great great grandchild.
