----, ---- -- Lucas. A sad accident occurred at the home of Rev. G.M. Grau, near Mt. Zion Church, Wednesday evening about 4 o'clock. On last Tuesday a cousin of Mrs. Grau and two children from Cincinnati arrived here to spend a few days visiting. One of the children, a little boy, aged about three years, in some mysterious manner secured possession of a three ounce bottle of carbolic acid and drank the contents. He died in 15 minutes. Mr. Wappner, the undertaker from Mansfield, arrived Wednesday night and the body was embalmed and was taken to Cincinnati on Thursday for burial. It was sad and sudden. ----, ---- -- Wednesday. The little three-years-old grandson of Fred Long, of North Adams Street, died of croup at 8 o'clock last night. Mr. Long is particularly unfortunate, having buried his father at Wooster only a few days ago. ----, ---- -- Saturday. About 7:30 last evening Undertaker Schroer interred the remains of the Children's Home foundling, which was found dead on the doorsteps yesterday morning. There are no new developments in the case, although the authorities and physicians are of the opinion that there was neither physician nor midwife present at the birth of the child, as it would have been unnecessary to try to dispose of a "still born" in such an inhuman manner. Abbott, Edwin R. - EDWIN R. ABBOTT, 78, LOCAL GROCER, DIES - Funeral Services Will Be Held Monday - Edwin Robert Abbott, 78, died at his home, 638 Springmill Street, Friday afternoon. Mr. Abbott was engaged as a retail grocer operating a store on Springmill Street for 16 years. He was a charter member and presiding elder of the Grace Gospel tabernacle. Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife, Mrs. S. E. Abbott; one step-son, R. L. Hackett, Butler; and one sister, Mrs. John Lingafelter, Sturges, Mich. One half sister, Mrs. Ella Jennings, Newark, also survives. Funeral services will be held at Grace Gospel Tabernacle at 2 p. m. Monday conducted by Rev. S. R. Parrett. Abbott, Harriet L. -- Mrs. Harriett L. Abbott, aged 53 years, died Wednesday afternoon at 2:10 o'clock at her home, 94 West Third street, after having been in poor health for over two years. The latter part of last week she suffered an attack of pneumonia and her condition had been critical during the past few days. Mrs. Abbott was the widow of Nelson Abbott, who died about nine years ago and who had been for many years superintendent of the Mansfield Machine works. She was a member of the First Congregational church and had many friends who will sincerely mourn her death. Her parents are Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Parsons, who reside on North Main street. She is survived by four children - three daughters, the Misses Emily and Gertrude Abbott and Mrs. Harland M. Wirth, and one son, Edward Abbott, all of this city, also two sisters, Mrs. W. S. Cobean, of Roswell, New Mexico, and Mrs. C. B. Jameson of this city, and six brothers, George W. Parsons, of Steelton, Pa., LeRoy Parsons, of Mansfield; Hial Parsons of Hossick Falls, N. Abbott, Huldah E. -- Died, in Fairfield on Sunday morning, the 12th. of February, Mrs. Huldah E. Abbott, wife of Philander S. Abbott, aged 21 years. In this providence, parents mourn for an affectionate daughter, brothers and sisters and friends -- one they dearly loved; and the bereaved husband a dear companion, whose society he had enjoyed only for a brief space of five short weeks. Abbott, S. L. - S. L. Abbott, a pioneer resident of Plymouth, died Sunday evening at his home in that village. He had been in poor health for a long period. Aberle, Henry -- Henry Aberle, aged 78, died at the infirmary Tuesday afternoon. Funeral from the residence of Andrew Ginder, 195 South Hedges Street, at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, the Rev. F. Abernethy, Alexander -- Dr. Alexander Abernethy, one of the oldest citizens of Lexington, was buried on Saturday. He was nearly 83 years of age. He leaves a widow, three sons and a daughter. He was at one time a resident of Mansfield. [Mansfield Herald: 17 June 1886]

Abernethy, J.P. -- Wednesday. The remains of J.P. Abernethy, who died in Cleveland, will be brought to this city Thursday morning, Feb. 9th., at 10:50 o'clock and be buried directly from the union depot. The deceased was a resident of Mansfield years ago and in the early forties was engaged in the dry goods business in the room now occupied by Charles Ritter. Abernethy, Mary J. -- The death of Miss Mary J. Abernethy, which occurred at the residence of her aunt, Mrs. T.J. Robinson, on Tuesday of last week, was lamented by numerous friends and relatives, to whom she had endeared herself by a kind, loving and sweet disposition. Abraham, Josiah -- Josiah Abraham, a son of Mrs. I.W. Pleasant's by her first husband, died at the residence of his mother and stepfather Tuesday evening and was buried on Thursday at 10 o'clock a.m. Mr. Abraham was 36 years old and died of consumption. He formerly resided in Chicago. Rev. Frank Russell officiated at the obsequies. Aby, Albert - Albert Aby, age 38, died at his home one mile east of this city at 9:30 a.m., today, after a lingering illness. Achenbach, Ludwig -- Ludwig Achenbach died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Jacob Bissman, 61 South Adams Street, Sunday at 7 a.m. Mr. Achenbach was born in Waschenbach, Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Sept. 29, 1813, and came to this country in 1853, coming direct to this city, where he has resided continuously until his death. He was a tailor by trade and in that capacity was employed for over 30 years by M.L. Miller. Two children, Mrs. Jacob Bissman and Mrs. Daniel Bonen, survive him, his wife having died Mar. 6, 1895. The brothers were Fred, Albert and Charles, all of Mansfield, while the brothers-in-law were Henry and Elmer Fox of Mansfield and Carl West of Chicago, Ill. Burial was made in the Mansfield cemetery. Ackerman, Cora -- Native of Mansfield Dies Sunday Morning --Mrs. Cora Ackerman, widow of August Ackerman, died Sunday morning, at 3:45 o'clock, at the General hospital, following a very brief illness. Mrs. Ackerman was born in this city May 3 1863, and her entire life of nearly 60 years was spent in Mansfield. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church for many years, and was affiliated with the Sons of Veterans Auxiliary. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Harvey Freehafer of this city, four sons, Benjamin Ackerman, city, Ernest A. Ackerman and Thomas J. Ackerman of Cleveland, and Martin B. Ackerman of Spokane, Wash. Also two brothers, Harry Burns and Richard Stevens of this city, and six grandchildren. The body was removed to the Niman mortuary where it was prepared for burial and later was taken to the home of her daughter Mrs. Freehafer, 57 Helen Avenue. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock conducted by the Rev. H.C. Roehner of the First Lutheran Church. Burial will be in the Mansfield Cemetery. Submitted by Nancy. Ackerman, John Frederick

Ackerman, Margaret -- MIFFLIN, Feb. 20 -- Margaret Ackerman, mother of Mrs. George Stillwagon, died Friday, Feb. 21. Mrs. Ackerman was born in Berks County, Pa., Apr. 15, 1803. Her maiden name was Bidler. After the marriage she came with her husband to Richland County, Ohio. They lived in the southern part of the county for several years when they removed to Mansfield, where Mr. Ackerman established a meat market, which he carried on for several years. He died about 40 years ago. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Ackerman made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Beeler, who lived in Indiana, but about ten years ago she came to Ashland County, where she has since lived with her daughter, Mrs. George Stillwagon. She was the mother of five children, two sons and three daughters. The sons preceded their mother to the grave several years ago. Her age was 92 years, 10 months and 29 days. She was the oldest person living in Vermillion Township. She was buried Sunday, Feb. 16, in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, the Rev. S.P. Keifer, pastor of the Mifflin Lutheran Church officiating. Ackerman, Margaret (Rindfuss) -- Mrs. Margaret Ackerman died Friday morning between 9 and 10 o'clock at her home, 271 West Fourth Street, after an illness of about three months. The cause of her death was apoplexy. She had two strokes last February and the third resulted in her death. Mrs. Ackerman has been a resident of Mansfield for many years and was well known. She died at the age of 77 years and 4 months. Her maiden name was Miss Margaret Rindfull and she was born Jan. 31, 1826, at Jugenheim, Hesse-Darmstadt, German. She was married Dec. 26, 1848, to Michael Ackerman and in 1849 they came to this country. Mr. Ackerman and five sons and three daughters survive her. The sons are Peter, John, Philip, Fred, of this city, and Charles, of Lima, and the daughters are Mrs. Katharine Wappner, Mrs. John Springer, of this city, and Mrs. Herman Sens, of Cincinnati. Ackerman, Sophia (Snyder) -- Mrs. Sophia Ackerman, wife of George Peter Ackerman, died at the family residence, No. 79 South Main Street, Monday, April 19, at midnight. The deceased was born in Germany, Sept. 1, 1840, and was the youngest of a family of seven children. She came to this country when 5 years of age. Dec. 4, 1856 she was married to George P. Ackerman. There are five children, Charles F. Ackerman, Miss Annie B. Ackerman, Mrs. Henry Matson of New Bedford, Mass.; A.F. Ackerman, Mrs. H.A. Albrecht, of Chicago, and Louis Ackerman. Mrs. Ackerman was taken sick about one year ago but she has only been confined to her bed since January. She was a member of the German Lutheran church and the president of several of its' ladies' societies. Mrs. Ackerman was the daughter of Joseph Snyder and wife. Ackerman, Stephen -- Stephen Ackerman, an old and respected citizen of this section, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. C.N. Gordon, of Weldon Avenue, Mansfield, on Sunday, December 31. The deceased was nearly 93 years of age. The cause of death was senility. Mr. Ackerman was born January 11, 1830, on the farm in Middlebury Township, Knox County, Ohio, which was originally cleared and settled by his grandfather, who was one of the first Ohio pioneers. He lived there for many years, coming to Mansfield a number of years ago following his retirement from active life, and has since made his home with his two daughters here. He is survived by one brother, Harvey, of Bowling Green; Mrs. Curtis Hardgrove, of 165 West Fourth Street, Mansfield; Mrs. C.N. Gordon, of Mansfield, sisters, and Mr. & Mrs. J.L. Ackerman, of Wooster. Eighteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive. The deceased had been gradually failing in his mental faculties for several years due to the advanced age, but had remained practically unimpaired physically up until a few months before his death. He was a life-long member of the Christian church, and was a man of sterling principle and integrity who enjoyed the confidence and respect of all who knew him, and had many friends in this locality. The funeral, which was private, was held on Tuesday, January 2, from the Gordon home, and the remains were taken to the North Branch cemetery for interment. Adams, Albert -- BRIEF ILLNESS FATAL TO ALBERT ADAMS, 69 - Albert (Jack) ADAMS, 69 of 3326 Mabee Rd, died Thursday afternoon in Mansfield General Hospital following a brief illness. He was born 11 July 1900 in Port Clinton, and had lived here for the past 38 years. Mr ADAMS was a retired salesman and he attended the Grace Brethren Church. He was a veteran of World War I, serving with the US Army. Survivors are his wife, Nana Miaier ADAMS, two sons, John A ADAMS of 3318 Mabee Rd, and James ADAMS of Sandbeach, Port Clinton; eight grandchildren, his parents Mr and Mrs. Hayes ADAMS of Orrville, and one brother Earl ADAMS of Port Clinton. Funeral services will be held at the Wappner Funeral Home Saturday at 1:30 pm by Rev Richard E Grant. Burial will be in Rusha Cemetery, Port Clinton at 4 pm. Adams, Albert Floyd -- Albert Floyd ADAMS, Ex-Tappan Employee, Dies Albert Floyd ADAMS, 75, of 461 Howard St, died Monday evening at Peoples Hospital following an extended illness. Born 27 Jan 1884, in Jackson Township, he spent his entire life in Mansfield. Mr ADAMS was a retired employe of the Tappan Stove Co. Surviving are his wife, Mrs Berth WIEGAND ADAMS; one daughter, Mrs Russell MILES (Ruth ADAMS), 465 Howard St; one grandson, Floyd James MILES of Mansfield. Mr ADAMS is the last member of his family. He was a life-long member of the Mayflower Congregational Church and an employee of the post office for 39 years, retiring in 1959. Adams, Alexander -- Alexander ADAMS died Sunday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock at his home, 97 Woodland avenue, after a long illness. He was born April 11, 1840 in Cumberland county, Pa, but spent most of his life in and about Mansfield. He was the last of a family of 14 children. He is survived by a son, Jesse ADAMS, of Smithville, Mich, and two daughters, Mrs. Alice D WHITING and Mrs. Hattie WOODHULL, both of this city. Adams, Angeline (Beelman) -- Died 30 Apr 1925 -- Death of Mrs. Adams - Mrs. Adeline (sic) Adams, widow of the late Isaac Adams, died at the home of her son, Barney Adams, in Cass township Thursday morning from heart failure. She was the daughter of Joseph and Mary Beelman and was born in Plymouth township October 30, 1847. She was married 57 years ago to Isaac Adams of Cass township. Both were of pioneer families in their neighborhood. They had three children, Barney, Ada and Harkness. She survived her husband seven years. One son, Harkness, died a few years ago at his home in Mansfield. She is survived by one son, Barney, and daughter, Mrs. Ada Dick, and a sister, Mrs. Fannie Moore, of 75 North Gamble street, in Shelby. Mrs. Adams was a member of the Lutheran church. Services will be held at the home of Barney Adams at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Services will be in charge of Rev. John S. Tome of the Shelby Lutheran church. Mr. ADAMS was a member of St John's United Church of Christ and a veteran of the US Army serving during World War II. She was a member of the Daughters of Liberty, the Independent Order of Foresters, and the Lady Macabees. Adams, Cashell -- Died 3 Sep 1923 -- TWO FARMERS ARE FOUND DEAD - One Dies In Field, Other Is Found On Strawstack; Funerals Announced. Two farmers, Cashell Adams and Christian Kinsey, were found dead on their farms in this county on Labor Day. Each death is attributed to heart trouble. Mr. Adams, who was 77 years old, started at 9:30 o'clock Monday morning to go to the field where his nephew, DeLos Adams, was plowing, on the Millsboro road. At 11 o'clock the nephew found his uncle about 11:30 o'clock, lying in the field dead. The body was brought to Wappner's morgue and prepared for burial. The funeral will be held at Wappner's chapel Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. The burial will be in the Lexington cemetery. Mr. Adams' nearest relatives are his nephews, DeLos Adams with whom he made his home, and Charles Adams of Akron. Mr. Kinsey the other victim of heart trouble, was working on an old, straw stack on his farm, near Sites Lake, preparing to thresh. His grandson found him sitting on the stack, dead. Mr. Kinsey was born in Pennsylvania but had lived in this vicinity 24 years. He is survived by his wife, five daughters, Mrs. D.W. Snyder, Ashland county, Mrs. Harry M. Cary, Alto, Pa., Mrs. William West, Mansfield, Mrs. Esther Au who lives at home and Mrs. Emanuel Capario, Detroit, Mich. 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary 11 Nov 1946. Surviving are her daughters, Mrs. Marie WILLIAMS, Mansfield, and Mrs. George ZACHARISON, Cupertino, CA; three sons, Ray ADAMS, Cleveland; Harold L ADAMS and Goral H ADAMS of Mansfield. Mrs. ADAMS left one brother, Allen HUNTSBARGER, Ashland and a sister, Mrs. Dora MOSES, Mansfield. He was a member of the first English Lutheran Church and a member of the Mansfield Gun Club. His hobby was muzzle loading guns in which he was considered an authority. Adams, Floyd K. -- 81, of 447 Gadfield Road died Wednesday afternoon in the Winchester Terrace Nursing Home after an extended illness. He was born 7 Feb 1910 in Mansfield to David and Bessie MILES ADAMS. He was a member of St Mark's Lutheran Church and lived in Mansfield all his life. Mr ADAMS worked for 35 years at Mansfield Tire and Rubber Co and drew the "Tire Folks in Ink" for the Mansfield Tire Topics for 25 years. He also owned ADAMS Carpet Cleaners for many years. He was a 60-year member and past master of Venus Lodge 152, F&AM and a member of Ruth Chapter 17, Order of the Eastern Star. He was also B.P.O. of Elks 56. Adams, George -- Auto Fatally Hurts Ex-City Electrician ... George Adams, 81, former city electrician and father of Ernest ADAMS, present city electrician, died at 12:45 pm today at General hospital of injuries received when struck by a car at Bowman and Chester streets at 11 am today. He resided at 515 Johns avenue. Mr. ADAMS suffered a fractured skull, according to the attending physician. He was struck by the right fender of an Empire Steel company station wagon driven by O H JENKINS. JENKINS was driving to the post office with a load of mail when the vehicle struck Mr ADAMS. According to the police, Mr. ADAMS had started to cross the street and became confused at the traffic. The body was removed to the Finefrock Funeral home. Arrangements were incomplete early this afternoon. Mr. ADAMS was the seventeenth traffic fatality in Richland county this year. There were 15 deaths at this time last year. Adams, Isabel -- Lexington. The remains of Mrs. Isabel Adams were brought from Canton (OH) for burial, Monday. Mrs. Adams was a former resident of this place. She was 89 years of age, the widow of the late Henry Adams. She died at the home of her niece, Mrs. Jesse Moore Starrett at Canton, where she had made her home the past few years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Jennings Lincoln at Springfield, one brother, M.S. Moore and a sister Mrs. Alice McKee of Mansfield and two grandsons. Adams, Jack L. -- Loudonville. Jack L ADAMS, 75, of 223 West Washington St, Ashland, died Friday afternoon in Kettering Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Mansfield and was a retired 32-year employee of the Flxible Co in Loudonville where he resided for 48 years. He moved to Ashland three years ago. Mr. Adams was a member of the United Methodist Church of Loudonville. He is survived by his wife, Helen; one daughter, Mrs Harriett MILLER of Ashland; one sister, Mrs Hazel BEINBRECK of Mansfield, and one grandchild. Adams, James Milton -- James Milton Adams was born August 24, 1853, departed this life at the home of his parents, Shelby, Ohio, February 17, 1874, aged 20 years, 5 months and 23 days. Though feeble in health for some months, his death came an an unexpected time, he having suddenly become worse, so that his afflictions soon ended in death. But a few hours preceding his departure he professed faith in Christ in the ordinance of holy baptism. His young life on earth is done. Sorely bereaved parents, brothers and sisters and many friends deeply lament his early removal from the earthly home. Adams, John -- Saturday. John Adams, known as the man having the large and unnatural growth on his under lip, died at the home of George Adams, near Plymouth, last Saturday. A cancer in the unnatural growth was the cause of his death and not from poisoning as has been reported. Adams, John H. -- The funeral of John H. ADAMS was held from the Lutheran Church on Saturday morning and was attended by a large concourse of people. Rev MILLER preached a sermon full of pathos and the choir rendered excellent music. He served on the Mansfield police force from 16 April 1911, until his retirement on 1 January 1933. Adams, Miss -- Two persons, a Miss Adams, aged between 50 and 60, and an 8-year old boy, named Charley Bird, were asphyxiated by gas from a gas stove, at 69 West Fourth Street, Mansfield, last Thursday night. Adams, Olive (Sprott) Coy -- SHENANDOAH -- Olive Sprott Coy Adams, 78, died Sunday evening, March 17, 2002, at Hillside Acres Nursing Home after a long illness. She was born September 15, 1923 in Savannah, Ohio, daughter of the late Joseph and Ermanetta (Whitney) Sprott. She had lived most of her life in the Shenandoah area. Mrs. Adams was a 1941 graduate of Savannah High School. She was a member of Shenandoah Christian Church were she had taught Sunday school and attended the CWF. She was a member of the local garden club and had served on the Richland County Cancer Board. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and traveling. She is survived by her husband, H. Clyde Adams of Shenandoah; a son, Jon Coy of Savannah; three daughters, Joyce Ludwig of Pendleton, South Carolina, Jane Iglesias of Nashville, Tennessee and Jill Cyrus of Wooster; three stepdaughters, Sue Hyatt and Sara Adams, both of Columbus, and Mary Grim of Plain City; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Coy in 1972; and a sister, Lucille McFredrick. Friends may call from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at Eastman Funeral Home, 49 W. Adams, Philip -- About 2 o'clock Tuesday morning, Dec. 11, Mr. Philip Adams, well known and highly respected in this community, passed quietly away. Mr. Adams was born near Funkstown, Washington Co., Md., on Jan. 14, 1829. On Dec. 9, 1853 he was married to Elizabeth Rininger, at Schellsburg, Pa. Four children were born to them, two of whom are still living, namely, E.F. Adams, of Johnstown, Pa., and Mrs. Samuel B. Dyer, of Kansas City, Mo. On October 2, 1860 he was married to Annie Elizabeth Smith, at Stoyestown, Pa., moving to Bellville in the spring of 1861, where the family of eight children were born. Two died in infancy. The surviving members of the family are Mr. Elmer E. Adams, Mr. Burton L. Adams, and Mrs. W.H. Kaiser, all of Mansfield; Mr. Chas. H. Adams, of Cleveland, Mrs. J.W. Lowey, of St. Louis, Mo., and Mrs. W.S. Harter, of Bellville. The eight children above named were all present for the funeral except Mrs. Samuel B. Dyer, of Kansas City. Mr. Adams was a member of the M.E. church in this city, and superintendent of that Sabbath school for twelve years. In his younger days he was active in all social and church work. During the Civil War he enlisted for one hundred days in Co. D of the 163rd. regiment of O.N.G. After serving this time he re-enlisted as a member of Co. A, 187th. regiment, Ohio Vol. Infantry, and served to the end of the war. His death occurred after a short illness at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W.S. Harter, on Bell Street. Funeral services were conducted at the house by Rev. H.B. Burkholder, on Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Interment was made in the Bellville Cemetery. Messrs. Jacob Koerber, Perry Walsh, Jacob Klotz and Wilson Sharp, of Bellville, Nahum Lash and Delno Sargent, of Mansfield, acted as pall bearers. Mr. Adams was highly esteemed by all who knew him and was on of the oldest citizens of our town, having spent the greater part of his life of 77 years, 10 months and 27 days here. Adams, Ross Miller- Shelby- Ross Miller Adams, 87, of 22065 Deborah Avenue, Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Amoy Ganges Road, died Monday Oct. 23, 2000, at his home. He was born November 18, 1912 in Shelby, the son of the late Earl and Jennie Miller Adams. He was a graduate of Shelby High School. Mr. Adams was a farmer, was employed at Fred Laubie and Don Murray Ford Garage and had been a school bus driver for the Shelby city Schools. Mr. Adams was a member of Ganges Community Church and was an Army veteran of WW11. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lovetta Laser Adams, whom he wed on January 4, 1942; several nieces and nephews; and one cousin. Calling hours will be on Saturday from 9-10:30 a.m. at Turner Funeral Home, 168 West Main St., Shelby, where funeral services will be held on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Adams, William B. -- Died 10 Dec 1923 -- Attempting To Light Gas Stove Results in Serious Injuries - William B. Adams was probably fatally burned this morning, when a gas explosion in his room at the Bell residence in Crestline, blew the roof off the building, and broke the windows from the house besides wrecking a house across the alley. Mr. Adams is employed as machinist with the Pennsylvania railroad system at Crestline. Up to last night he made his home in this city with Mr. and Mrs. H. -?- Wentz, Augustine avenue, but moved to Crestline to eliminate the expense of going to and from his work. He arose this morning at his new home in an upstairs room at the Bell residence, and was in the act of lighting the gas in the small stove when the explosion occurred (sic). The room seemed to be filled with vapor from a leaking gas pipe, as the lid was blown off Adams' trunk into which there had evidently been a seepage of the gas. Mr. and Mrs. Bell heard the muffled explosion, and screams of agony and when they ran to the stairway, Adams was in a sheet of flame in the hallway upstairs. He was attired only in his underclothing, and that was entirely burned from his body. On being removed to the Emergency hospital immediately after the explosion, it was readily seen that his condition was critical. The flesh was burned from the body from head to foot, and even the nails were burned from his hands and feet. He suffered great pain from the effects of the burns, and everything possible was done for the injured man. Mr. Adams has been singularly unfortunate in his life. Last June he was run down by an automobile while riding a motorcycle, and was confined to

Adams, William P. -- The correspondent has received intelligence of the death Feb. 20, at San Diego, Cal., of William P. Adams, who was well known to the older people of Lexington, where he was born Feb. 2, 1832. His father, John F. Adams, who died in Lexington in 1864, was among the first merchants here, having as partner, Mr. Damsell, grandfather of Mrs. S. N. Ford, of Mansfield. William P. Adams was uncle of Mrs. Charles Bird, of Mansfield, and brother to Miss Anna Adams, who, with Mrs. Bird's little son, met a sad and tragic death by suffocation by gas in Mansfield in September, 1890. Mr. Adams left here 44 years ago for Walla Walla, Wash. then a small trading point in the fastnesses (sic - should be vastness?) of the mountains, and he experienced dangers and privations en-route through the savage, primitive wilds that seem like something in the realms of fiction and which would have awed a less brave and hopeful heart. But he had a heart which no danger could daunt and had keen business tact and ultimately became one of the best known and successful business men on the Pacific slope. Fred Adams joined him when an athletic young man, after he came out of the civil war and he too, had high aspirations and a spirit of adventure that the greatest perils could not daunt and also achieved phenomenal success in business. They have visited the scene of their boyhood but once since they left and that was in the year 1876 when they went to the exposition at Philadelphia. William P. Adams' death was due to dropsy. Adesko, Irene - Mrs. Irene Adesko, 75, widow of Vincent Adesko, who made her home with her niece, Mrs. Henrietta Bell of 1224 Cairns Rd., died Thursday evening at Mansfield General Hospital after an extended illness. Born in Hungary on April 17, 1901, she came to this country and Mansfield in 1913. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. Amelia Hill of Kirtland. Friends may call at the Geiger-Herlihy Funeral Home Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home Monday at 10 a.m. by a priest from St Peter's Catholic Church. Adler, Michael -- A letter from George Hammond of Canton (OH), to Christ Gribbling, recently received, announces the death in that city of Mr. Michael Adler, formerly well known in Mansfield. Adrain, William -- William Adrain, who has been very ill for the past five weeks at his home on West Fourth Street, is in a very critical condition and it is feared that he cannot live through the day. Mr. Adrain was one of the pioneer merchants of Mansfield and has been a resident of his city for a great many years. Later -- Mr. Adrain died about 3 p.m. Obituary tomorrow. Adrain, William -- William Adrain, a well-known and highly respected citizen of Mansfield who has lived in this county all his life, passed away Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at his home, 43 West Fourth street. The cause of his death was spinal meningitis with which he has been confined to his bed for the past five weeks, though he had been in ill health for some time before that. Mr. Adrain was born at the family homestead, four and a half miles west of the city, Dec. 20, 1831. His father, John Adrain, was one of the early settlers of the county. Mr. Adrain spent his boyhood on the farm and secured his education in the district school. In his young manhood he came to Mansfield and clerked in the clothing store of M.L. Miller and later was in the employ of Dickson & Byrd at the grocery of that firm. He clerked also for James and Victor Dickson and later on embarked in the grocery business with Victor Dickson, that partnership continuing for some time. At the dissolution of the partnership with Mr. Dickson, Wilbur Finney was associated in business with Mr. Adrain, this firm continuing for some years. Altogether, Mr. Adrain was in the grocery business about twenty-five years. He was united in marriage, Dec. 2, 1868, at Findlay with Miss Nancy Howard, who with one daughter, Mrs. Frank Marquis, of this city, survives him. Mr. Adrain was a great lover of home and devoted to his family. He was a member of Venus Lodge, No. 132, F. and A.M. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. F.A. Gould, of the M.E. Ahrend, William Ludwig -- Independence. Mr. William Ludwig Ahrend was born in Germany, Jan. 17, 1828, and died at the home of Mr. Daniel Loose in Independence, Sept. 22, 1887, aged 59 years, 7 months and 5 days. Mr. Ahrend responded to his country's call during our civil war and served over three years. He was a member of the 119th. regiment N.Y. Infantry. He was one of the contestants in the decisive battle of Gettysburg. A brief service was held at the home of Mr. Loose in the presence of a large assemblage on Saturday the 24th. at 1 p.m., after which the G.A.R. took charge and proceeded in proper order to the cemetery, where the last rites and ceremonies were performed by the order in behalf of their departed fellow soldier. -- [Mansfield Weekly News: 29 September 1887, Vol. 3, No. 44]

Albrecht, George C. � Mansfield. George C. Albrecht, 80, of 66 N. Home Road died Monday afternoon in the Griffith Nursing Home after an extended illness. Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 8, 1903, he came to Mansfield in 1910 and retired from the Gorman Rupp Co. in 1965 after 26 years of service. He was a member of the Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by three sons, William of Ashland and Edward and Charles, both of Mansfield; one daughter, Mrs. Bertha Carpenter of West Salem, Ohio; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Leora Valerio of Mansfield. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mathilda, in 1975. Alexander, Amanda Weymouth -- Mrs. Amanda Weymouth Alexander, mother of our worthy townsman, Harry Alexander, peacefully passed to her last final rest, Wednesday at 9 p.m., Jan. 11, 1905, aged 75 years, 5 months and 14 days. She was born at Belmont, Me., and on Aug. 18, 1850, was united in marriage to Harrison Alexander. In 1851 they located in Bellville where she has lived ever since. To this union three children were born, James M., Hannah and Harry. The daughter was the first member of the family to be summoned by the angel of death. Since the death of her husband Jan. 16, 1895, she has lived with her son, Harry, who owns and still occupies the old homestead on Durbin Ave. April 18, 1885, she united with the Adventist church of this place remaining a faithful member, an earnest and devoted Christian till the close of her life. During the latter part of the summer her health began to fail, but not until about four weeks before her death was her illness considered serious. Her sufferings toward the last were intense, but she bore it with Christian fortitude and patience and was perfectly resigned to the will of her Savior. In these days when many aged parents are denied the courtesies justly due them and are often made to feel that they are in the way, it is justly due to Mr. and Mrs. Alexander to say that such was not the course pursued in their home. Mother was always welcome and during her illness every attention that could be suggested by loving hearts, was shown her. She was closely watched over and tenderly ministered to as long as mortal hand could serve her. Her kind and affable disposition won for her a host of friends in the social world. The large attendance at the funeral and the many beautiful floral offerings that almost hid from sight the casket in which she rested, told of the esteem in which she was held, better than could be expressed in words. She leaves two sons, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two brothers and one sister with many other relatives and friends to mourn her loss. Alexander, Joseph H. -- Joseph H. Alexander was born at Lexington, O., August 18, 1845, and departed this earthly life at his home in Plymouth, November 22, 1915, in the 71st. year of his age. Mr. Alexander, with his wife, came to Plymouth in 1891, and has lived here ever since. During this time he held the office of street commissioner for seven successive years, but the later years of his labors were spent in the employ of the J.D. Fate Co. He was of a quiet, unobtrusive nature, kind of heart and had a warm love of home and was a great lover of flowers, among which he spent many happy hours, and of which he had a large variety. His virtues were best known by neighbors and those within the family circle. He is survived by his wife, one daughter, Mrs. Alice Flinchbaugh of Columbus, and two sons, Chas. G. of Ashland, and William of Newark. Mr. Alexander was a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of Co. G., 142nd. O. Regt. Funeral services were held from the Lutheran church Wednesday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G.C. Smith, of the Lutheran church, and was largely attended by friends and neighbors. Alger, Harriet P. -- Harriet P. Alger was born in Johnstown, Montgomery County, New York, Nov. 10th., 1803, and was 85 years, 2 months and 1 day old at her death. She was married to Sylvester Alger, March 20th., 1822. From the state of New York the couple moved to Bucyrus, O., in the spring of 1838. From Bucyrus they moved to Wooster, O., and from the latter place to Mansfield in 1857. She was the mother of eleven children, six of whom survive her. They are Mrs. J.S. Norton, of Kirksville, Mo.; L.M. Alger, of Mansfield; Mrs. C. Elliott, of Ontario, O.; Capt. A.B. Alger, of Portsmouth, O., and Mrs. J.M. Kerr, of Mansfield. She was a full cousin of the late eminent divine, Dr. John D. Dempster, of Chicago. She joined the Mansfield Methodist church about twenty years ago. As a Christian she professed but little and practiced much. Her rebukes of misdeeds left no thorns to fester in unnecessarily made wounds. She was outspoken, firm and aggressive in condemning faults, but never irritating, and by the force of her mild Christian manner often changed the course of those in error, which a more boisterous spirit would have failed to influence. There was scarcely any variation in her daily life. She had a smile and a kind word for all she met and seemed to control other minds by contact, and make them for the time being as spiritual as herself. The love which continually glowed in her warm heart was easily traced in her countenance, and even in death was plainly stamped upon her pale features. Since the death of her life companion, nearly four years ago, she often said that she had nothing to rest upon but her Savior's love, and in her daily conversation always expressed that joyous hope known only to true Christians. In her last moments she called upon Jesus to come and then added, "He is coming". The body returns to the dust whence it came and the spirit to him who bestowed it.

Alger, Leander Monroe -- Leander Monroe Alger, who died Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock was well known throughout the city of Mansfield. He was born in New York state March 26, 1832, and came to Mansfield in the early fifties. Mr. Alger was united in marriage with Miss Mary A. Fraulk, of Jeromesville, Jan. 16, 1868. The deceased was a member of Mansfield lodge, No. 19, I.O.O.F., and was a past grand in that organization. Mr. Alger was a master carpenter and had followed the trade in Mansfield for about 40 years. He is supposed to be the oldest master carpenter in Mansfield. A number of years ago Mr. Alger fell from a building and fractured his skull. The injury has given him more or less trouble ever since, becoming gradually worse as the years passed. While working at his chosen avocation, Mr. Alger has helped to build many of the large buildings of the city. He assisted on the Congregational church and many other large structures. For about 20 months he has been confined to his home on Augustine Avenue. June 15 he submitted to an operation in the hope of recovery, but the injury had gone too long. The wife and three grown children, Mrs. Al Martin, of Fort Wayne; William H. Alger and Frank Alger, of this city, survive the husband and father. Mr. Alger was a member of the Methodist church. Algire, John F. -- John F. Algire, of Lexington, died March 5, in his 83rd. year. He was born in Bedford County, Pa., Nov. 25, 1823, and came to Richland County with his parents, when 5 years of age. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Algire, also pioneers of Richland County. He was a highly respected Christian gentleman, a kind and loving husband and father, beloved by all who knew him. His illness was due to old age. He had been filing in health for the past six months, was confined to his bed about 3 months, and with the Christian faith he murmured not. He was a member of the First English Lutheran church at Woodbury for many years, having given his heart to God in early manhood. For years he lived on a farm north of Mansfield and of late has resided in the village of Lexington. Mr. Algire was married twice, his first wife being Nancy Thuma. Three daughters came to bless their union and when the youngest was but an infant the mother died. The eldest, Mrs. Sarah Zing, of Sturges, Mich., Mrs. Mary C. Moyer, of Mansfield, Mrs. Minerva Medsker, of Chicago, survive him. He also leaves a widow, three sons and three daughters, Mrs. Ellen Howard, Kendalville, Ind., Mrs. Lola Deffenbaugh, of Mansfield, Mrs. Emma Fisher, of Lexington, W.E., of Cleveland, Samuel, of Wolcottville, Ind., J.C., of Los Angeles, Cal. Also a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two brothers and two sisters, William of Bellville, Samuel of Mansfield, Mrs. Mary Hershiser of Mansfield, and Mrs. Elmira Black, Bangorville, who mourn his loss. Allen, Anna C. -- Mrs. Anna C. Allen, widow of the late George Allen, of Mansfield, committed suicide Friday by hanging herself in a stairway with a bed cord. Her conduct during the sickness and death of her husband was spoken of as inhuman, but insanity is now considered the cause of her strange demeanor and her death. -- [Bellville Star: 25 October 1883, Vol. 7, No. 3]

Allen, S.P. -- S.P. Allen, of 163 Harker Street, died at his home, at 12:10 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The cause of his death was Bright's disease, with which he has been ailing since February. Mr. Allen was born July 13, 1851, in Morrow County. He came from there to Mansfield at the age of 18 years and has lived here ever since, being employed for a long time as lineman for the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. The deceased leaves a wife, two whom five children were born, two of whom, Aubrey and Clyde, survive him. He is also survived by his sister, Mrs. A.S. Lash, of Daisy Street. Mr. Allen was an active and highly respected member of the following fraternities: Independent Order of Foresters, Junior Order United American Mechanics and the Daughters of Liberty. Allender, Thomas -- We learn that our old and esteemed friend, Thos. Allender, who resided a few miles north of Mansfield, died suddenly on Sabbath morning last. He was in town on Saturday, but has been ailing for a few weeks past, and getting up on Sabbath morning apparently in his usual health, and going out of the house, he was heard to fall against the door, and thus bound by the inmates of the house, who took him up and placed him upon a chair at his request, he soon fell over again, when he was carried to his bed, where he expired in about an hour. When taken in the house, he requested that Mr. Robinson, a neighbor, be sent for who arrived before he died. He doubtless died with an affection of the heart, aged 67 years. Mr. A. was a kind neighbor, strictly honest in all his dealings, and was prepared for this sudden call from time to eternity. [Richland Shield & Banner: 21 March 1874]

Alley, Martha Elizabeth --- Mansfield. Martha Elizabeth Alley daughter of Mr. John Alley of South Adams Street, died Tuesday morning at one o�clock. Allonas, Alice -- Saturday. The remains of Mrs. Alice Allonas, of Marion, were brought to this city for interment at 11 o'clock this morning. The deceased is the wife of John Allonas, who was formerly a resident of this city. Altgeld, Mary (Lehnhart) -- Wednesday. The funeral of Mrs. Mary Altgeld was held at the German Lutheran church, five miles south of the city, at two o'clock yesterday afternoon. Governor Altgeld and wife arrived in the city from Springfield, Ill. at 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon and attended the last sad rites over the remains of the deceased. Quite a number from this city were in attendance at the funeral. [Richland Shield & Banner: 08 July 1893]

Altgeld, Mary (Lehnhart) -- Mrs. Mary Altgeld, mother of Gov. John P. Altgeld, of Illinois, died quite suddenly at her home in Washington Township at 10 o'clock last night. Mrs. Altgeld has been indisposed for some weeks but was feeling much better yesterday forenoon. About 2:30 o'clock she sustained an attack of paralysis and lingered until last night, when death relieved her. Mrs. Altgeld (nee Lehnhart) was born at Nassau, Germany, on Feb. 17th., 1822, and was therefore in her 72d. year at the time of her death. She married John Peter Altgeld in Germany and with him came to this country in 1848 and settled in Washington township. Mr. Altgeld preceded her to the "unknown land" about three years ago. The deceased was the mother of nine children, four sons and five daughters. Three daughters, all of whom live in Washington township, and one son, Gov. Altgeld of Illinois, survive her. Mrs. Altgeld when quite young united with the German Lutheran church and during her long life she has been a faithful and consistent Christian. The funeral will be held from the residence at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The bereaved have the sympathy of the entire community, as the deceased was widely known and loved. This morning Gov. Altgeld was notified of his mother's death and it is expected that he will be in attendance at the funeral. [Richland Shield & Banner: 08 July 1893]

Altgeld, Peter -- Washington. Died, Tuesday night, at 12 o'clock, of dropsy, Peter Altgeld, aged 72 years, 2 months and 16 days. Mr. Altgeld was born in Setlers, Germany, May 6th., 1818; was married to Mary C. Lehnhart in 1845. Mr. & Mrs. Altgeld moved to America in 1848 and have been residents of Richland County about 42 years. There was born to them nine children, of whom four are living, as follows: Judge J.P. Altgeld, of Chicago, Ill.; Mrs. Mary Frederich, Mrs. Amelia Sell and Miss Minnie Altgeld, of this vicinity. Mr. A. had been sick for about a year with dropsy. He also met with an accident last April breaking his ankle, which kept him in bed up to a few weeks ago, since which he has been around, yet troubled considerably with dropsy. The funeral will take place Friday at 10 o'clock. Deceased will be buried in the German Lutheran Cemetery, Rev. Schetly officiating. Althouse, Elizabeth (Mountain) -- A telegraph was received here Sunday announcing the death at Philadelphia Sunday morning at 5 o'clock of Mrs. Elizabeth Althouse, wife of George Althouse. Mrs. Althouse was a daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Mountain of this city and has a host of friends here who will be very sorry to learn of her untimely death. Her mother and Mrs. J.R. Althouse, of this city, were at her bedside when she died. She was 35 years of age and leaves a husband and a daughter one week old. Mrs. Althouse was an earnest and consistent member of the First Lutheran church being active in the various lines of Christian work. She was also interested in the work of the Women's Relief corps. The remains will arrive here tonight from Philadelphia at 11:25 o'clock and will be taken to the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Mountain on South Wood Street. Althouse, Elizabeth (Mountain) -- The remains of Mrs. Elizabeth Althouse, who died Sunday morning at Philadelphia, where brought here for burial arriving Monday night at 11:25 o'clock on the Pennsylvania accompanied by relatives of the deceased. The remains were removed to the home of Mrs.. Althouse's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Charles Mountain, on South Wood Street. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. H.L. Alvord, Bessie -- Miss Bessie Alvord, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H.M. Alvord, died at one o'clock Monday morning of diphtheria, aged 6 years, 2 months and 22 days. She was taken sick last Wednesday morning and rapidly grew worse until she passed away. The funeral took place from the residence, No. 19 West Fourth Street, Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, Rev.
