Elzy Eagle died yesterday in the hospital of the state penitentiary.  The cause of his death was typhoid fever and he was ill but a few days.  He was about 30 years old and was sent to the pen from this county in October, 1890, for a term of eight years.  The Columbus papers state that his mother, Elizabeth Eagle, lives in this city, but her name does not appear either in the city directory or in the post office directory and the letter carriers have so far not been able to locate her and deliver a letter for her from the pen officials which is  addressed to this city.  A telegram received yesterday for Mrs. Eagle announcing the death of her son is yet undelivered, as the messenger boys are unable to find her.

Elzy Eagle was arrested on a charge of "holding up" Melvin H. Osbun at Pavonia the night of July 30, 1890, and robbing him of $22.06.  Mr. Osbun at that time was Erie agent at Pavonia.  Eagle pleased not guilty and was bound over and his case was continued over one term.  Before the next term he confessed his guilt and told where he had hidden the money, in a hollow stump, where the officers found it exactly as he described.  He pleaded guilty at the next term and was sentenced as above stated.

Eagle originally lived among the Hanover hills south of Loudonville, the locality which seemed to be for many years the hot bed for robbers.  He was a relative of Phil Sellers who was a half-brother of the notorious Parrett brothers and these were his early associates.  He had served almost five years of his time and with the usual time allowance he would have had little more than a year to serve.

Later in the same issue of the paper ...

The remains of Elzy Eagle, who died in the penitentiary last Thursday, were about to be consigned to the pickling vat of a medical college when a brother, John Eagle, of Jeromesville, put in an appearance at the pen and claimed the body.  Mrs. Elizabeth Eagle, Elzy's mother, lives south of Jeromesville, which explains why the letter and telegram sent here by the prison authorities could not be delivered.  The body was shipped to Ashland.
