Between 6 and 7 o'clock Saturday evening the body of Philip Lortz, aged about 28 years, who had been in the employ of B. Sens, the merchant tailor, was found hanging by the neck in the barn of Peter Koch on South East Diamond Street.  When discovered his  body was still warm but life was extinct.  Lortz came to this country from Germany about three years ago and on coming to Mansfield made his home with Peter Koch, Mrs. Koch being Lortz' cousin.  Subsequently he took a room in the adjoining house of John Klein, the owner of the Atlantic Garden, and here he worked at tailoring for Mr. Sens.  For a week prior to his death, however, he had done no work, but drank heavily, a vice to which for several years he had been addicted.  He had been in a despondent state of mind for some months, and on different occasions in conversation with relatives and others, threatened self-destruction.  His body after being cut down was removed to the undertaking establishment of Charles Schroer, from whence on Sunday afternoon the funeral took place, the remains of the unfortunate man being given a burial place in the Potter's Field of the cemetery.
