BELLVILLE -- Mrs. Annie Gross Shafer was born in Perry Township, Richland Co., O., Oct. 18, 1821, and died after a lingering and painful illness July 14, 1892, aged 70 years, 8 months and 26 days.  She was married to Michael Shafer, March 26, 1843.  Two children were born to her only one surviving infancy;  her daughter Almeda, on whose tender care she was dependent in her declining years.  Her husband died about 20 years ago.

Mrs. Shafer was one of the pioneers of Richland Co., and was known far and wide for her nobleness of character and charitable deeds.  She was a friend to the poor;  and the sick and afflicted were always objects of her concern.  She counted no sacrifice too great in behalf of those whose distress aroused her sympathy.  Her last hours were peaceful and her departure was calm.  Aunt Annie, as she was familiarly called, will be sadly missed from the community and from her home.  The funeral which was held at Salem Lutheran church on Sunday afternoon, July 15, was largely attended.  Rev. J.N. Barnett, the pastor, delivered an appropriate discourse, and a quartette choir from Bellville sang.
