Eliza Roop Waring was born in Mansfield.  All her years on the earth have been here.  When Mansfield was a small village, her father settled therein, and her life has been prolonged until she has been permitted to see Mansfield a growing, prosperous city.  Her father, Henry Roop, was a gentleman of fine business capacity, and in his death, many, many years ago, the people of Mansfield lost a most excellent citizen, neighbor and friend.  He was a merchant, and he also established in Mansfield the tanning business at a very early day.  In his employ, when a lad, went the late Andrew Loomis Grimes, and Mr. Grimes always spoke of Mr. Roop as one deserving the love and respect of the whole community.  And Mr. Grimes in his day was one of the most useful of the many men who built up Mansfield and advanced all its interests, and the writer hereof often heard Mr. Grimes ascribe much of his own success in life to the early business training received from the father of Eliza Roop Waring.  And like a son to this an who had made possible his own career, he never forgot the friend of his youth or his widow and children.  So there always existed between Mr. Grimes and Mrs. Waring a devoted and generous friendship.  The seeds sown by Mr. Roop, seeds of kindness and good will, brought forth abundant and abiding harvest.

In the days of the boyhood of the writer, Eliza Roop was greatly admired and esteemed by young and old alike.  She seemed to have inherited from her father so many of his sterling qualities.  She was ever gracious and kind, and forgot not that human life was at its best in performing deeds of kindness.  Her earlier life was one of devotion to her mother, who many years survived her father, and also the gentleman with whom her mother contracted a second marriage after the death of her father.

After her own marriage to the late George W. Waring and during the many years of her married life, she was devoted to her husband and her children, but never forgetful of the duties due to all in sickness and distress.  And in this respect, she was a notable woman up to the last days of her life. Two sons and two daughters survive her, but her friends, who will miss her greatly from the social circle, are, indeed many.

She lived to a good old age, more than three score and ten years, but at last she is not, for the Good Father has taken her.  One by one are the pioneers, the earliest settlers, and their descendants, passing away.  Few of the men and women born here prior to 1820 now survive, and in the passing year death has removed man hence.  But the memory of Eliza Roop Waring, of her gentle, womanly ways of her good, kind heart, of her practical, Christian life, will forever abide.  Tomorrow, Monday, Nov. 23, her mortal remains will be consigned to earth in our beautiful City of the Dead.  Her life, beautiful in itself and in all her work, is the rich heritage of her sons and daughters.

Mrs. Eliza R. Waring died at 1 p.m., Nov. 19, at her home, 85 Park Avenue East.  She had been an invalid for more than a year and was confined to her bed about six weeks.  During the last week of her illness it was known that she could not recover, and she faded gradually away until death claimed her.

The deceased was the daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Henry Roop, who formerly lived on South Main Street, and she was born in 1821.  Her father was in the tannery business in Richland County.  Mrs. Waring was wont to tell, when in a reminiscent mood, of her experiences with the Indians, and other matters in the days when Mansfield was on the frontier.  May 16, 1844, she was married to George W. Waring, who has since preceded her to the spirit land.  Seven children were born to them, four of whom survive:  Mrs. George W. Heckman of Park Avenue East, and George Waring of Marion Avenue, this city;  Newman Waring of Ottawa, Kan.;  Mrs. J.T. Poole of Center City, Cal..  Mrs. Waring's only brother, Morgan Roop, survives her and resides in this city.

Deceased had been a member of the Congregational Church all her life.  She had resided at 85 Park Avenue East, 47 years.  Funeral services were held at the residence Monday.
