Again Death's deadly shaft has found its mark, and we are compelled to perform the sad duty of chronicling the demise of another of Richland County's pioneers.

Reuben Evarts, was stricken with paralysis of the heart about 9 o'clock last Friday morning and expired about two hours later.

Deceased was born near Hamilton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, December 12, 1809, and came with his father to Richland County in February, 1816.  In 1834, he purchased the east half of the north-west quarter of Sec. 16, where he continued to reside during life.  He married Rebecca Howard, April 12, 18-8.  Eleven children were born to them as follows:  Andrew, Eli, Levi, Annetta, Reuben, Comfort A., Alverda, Robert, Rebecca J., John H., and Sarah C.;  all of whom, save the youngest are alive.  Eli and Levi are twins -- the former born late in 1843, and the latter in 1844.

Mr. Evarts always took -------------- pioneer ---- historical matters.  The following we copy from his biography in the History of Richland County.

REUBEN EVARTS commenced to teach school in 1827 or 1828, and taught fourteen winter terms in succession, excepting 1836-38, when he took a journey to Iowa;  in 1828 he commenced to work on the Ohio canal, and labored on it two summers;  in 1831, he commenced to make pumps, and for twelve years it was his exclusive summer occupation.  Mr. Evarts has filled all the township offices;  in 1843, he was elected Justice of the Peace and continued in the office 36 years, during which time he solemnized over 300 marriages, settled 36 estates, wrote many wills in Richland, Knox, Morrow, Ashland, Sandusky and Ashtabula Counties, and he was an agent of the Washington Sanitary Commission during its existence.  Mr. Evarts has taken an active interest in preserving the pioneer history of Richland County, and was one of the best informed men on this subject.

The funeral took place on Sunday, December 23, from St. Paul's Lutheran Church under the auspices of the Odd Fellows, of which he had been a member.  The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Philpott, of the M.E. Church, in the absence of the Lutheran minister.  A very large crowd of sorrowing relatives and friends attended to pay a last tribute to his good and noble man.
