At noon today the remains of Judge John Meredith, whose death occurred Saturday at his home in Shelby, arrived in this city.  Interment was made in the Mansfield Cemetery.  The deceased was a member of the Masonic order and the members of the fraternity in this city assembled at the Masonic Temple and escorted the remains to the cemetery.

Judge Meredith was one of the best known characters in Richland County and was a well known figure in this county's history.  He was a life long Democrat.  His age was 89 years and he leaves a wife to mourn her loss.  He was the second probate judge of Richland County, being the successor of Judge Noel Meyers, and was the last of the early pioneers of the Richland County press, being the founder of The Shield and Banner, concerning which the Richland County History says:  

In 1836, John Meredith and John Warnock purchased the Spectator office of Hoffman and Rentzel and continued its publication as a Democratic journal of super-royal size, for some two years, under the title of the Ohio Shield, when Meredith purchased Warnock's interest, enlarged the paper to double-medium size, and changed its' title to that of the Shield & Banner.  This publication of the paper was continued by Meredith and Meredith & Maxwell until May, 1841, when it was purchased by John Y. Glessner.  Thus it will be seen that the Shield & Banner is the pioneer paper.

Judge Meredith was a well known figure in this county's history and was a life long Democrat.  Many years ago he shook hands with Andrew Jackson, the "rough and ready" president and when William Jennings Bryan was at Crestline he shook hands with him, the second Jackson.

Judge Meredith was 89 year and leaves a wife to mourn his death.
