The first casualty in Richland County for 1896 occurred at Shelby Junction this morning when Patrick McCarty lost his life.

McCarty was section foreman for the B. & O. at Shelby Junction.  He had put his men at work this morning and had gone back to the car house to straighten the apparatus after the men had left.  The coolness of the air had compelled him to bundle up.  This had prevented his hearing the approach of the train and he stepped out immediately in front of second 23, drawn by engine 945.  McCarty was struck on the head and was, it is supposed, instantly killed, as he was dead when the men reached him.

The deceased was a whole-souled genial fellow and numbered his friends by the score.  He leaves a wife and four children, and was 40 years of age.

The funeral will probably occur Monday morning.
