Thursday -- William Lanehart of Chicago died today.  Mr. Lanehart formerly resided in Bellville and was a former partner of ex-Gov. Altgeld.  His brother, Albert Lanehart, of Bellville left for Chicago at noon today.

The following week's paper dated 25 July 1896 (Vol. LXXIX, No. 11) had the following additional information ...

John W. Lanehart, lawyer and prominent in the politics of Illinois, died at his home in Chicago, July 16, after suffering since the previous Saturday from peritonitis.

Mr. Lanehart was a cousin of Gov. John P. Altgeld, and was born in Bellville, this county.  He attended the public schools of Bellville, and afterwards went to Oberlin, thence to Dartmouth College, where he graduated in 1881, with honor.  He went to Chicago, studied law with Gov. Altgeld and, after being admitted to the bar, became his partner.  He had a large and lucrative practice and became quite wealthy.

He was a man of many noble qualities, refined and scholarly, and his death will be mourned by a wide circle of friends.
