FAMILY POISONED -- THE FATHER IS DEAD AND OTHERS SERIOUSLY ILL -- David Rose, who resides one mile west of Newville, is dead, his wife is not expected to live, his son, Walter, aged 35, and daughter, Celia, aged 16, are ill from the effects of supposed arsenic poisoning.

Wednesday, June 24, the Rose family sat down to breakfast at the usual hour.  All the family, with the exception of the daughter, ate heartily.  Shortly after breakfast Mrs. Rose was taken ill.  Mr. Rose started to Newville for a physician and on the way he was taken ill and had to be assisted to his home.  In the meantime, the son had gone to the house of a neighbor where he was taken critically ill.  The daughter was also taken ill but no so seriously as the other members of the family and soon recovered.

A physician was summoned and has been in constant attendance upon the family since.  Tuesday night the old gentleman died and it is feared his wife will also die.  The indication are that the condition of the family is due to arsenic poison.

Prosecutor Douglas was notified of the case this morning and Coroner Baughman went to the Rose home immediately and an autopsy is being held today to determine the cause of the death.

Coroner Baughman, Dr. McCombs of Newville and two physicians from Perrysville are conducting the investigation.

Information was received Wednesday that both the son and daughter are in critical condition.  The poisoning is attributed to a quantity of cherries, of which the family partook at breakfast, and which had been standing over night in a tin vessel.
