A terrible runaway accident occurred on Cemetery and East
Diamond streets Saturday afternoon which resulted in the death of Peter Klauer,
a farmer of Washington township, aged about 65 years. Mr. Klauer was driving to the city with a two-horse team and
coming in from the south on the Bellville road turned east on Chestnut street
in order to drive down East Diamond street and avoid the paved road.
On reaching Cemetery street the horses became unmanageable and dashing
down Cemetery at frightful speed came into collision with a lamp-post on East
Diamond street. The wagon was demolished and Mr. Klauer was hurled violently
to the ground. He was picked up
in an unconscious condition, the extent of his injuries being unknown, and
conveyed to his home where he died shortly after his arrival. The funeral took place on Monday.
