03 December 1887, Vol. LXX, No 28

Independence.  News has reached this port that Bob Phipps, formerly of this place has recently been married to a Ft. Wayne girl.  Bob, please accept the hearty congratulations of this whole neighborhood.  May you and your better half live long and enjoy life together.

Independence.  'Squire A.J. Myers threw the matrimonial mantle around Wm. E. Ross and Miss Tobisa Smith last Sunday evening week, and now they are trying to keep each other warm three cold nights.

Independence.  Chas. Mowry, of Newville, who has been ill of consumption long, died last Friday morning.  Deceased was buried at St. John's on Sunday.  The funeral was the largest ever known in that vicinity notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather.

Independence.  John Swendall's little boy died early Monday morning.  The little fellow was buried in the afternoon of the same day.  The sudden changes in the weather seems to have caused considerable sickness.

Lexington.  An infant child of James Wood's was buried in the Lexington Cemetery last Friday.

Lucas.  Born, to Mr. & Mrs. John Bowman, a son.

Lucas.  There was quite a turn-out from here to the funeral of Charles Mowry near Newville.

An increase of pension has been allowed to Geo. N. Stevens, of this city.

A little daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Ross A. Glessner, formerly of this city, died at their home at Columbus on Sunday from diptheria.

Mary McLaughlin asks to be divorced from her husband, Lawrence A. McLaughlin, on the ground of willful absence for three years last past.  They were married in 1877 and have two children born to them.

Marriage licenses issued ... S.B. Whitford & Ella Bachelder;  Edgar Brown & Florence Long;  John C. Stull & Cora I. Fike;  Lewis D. Aungst & Nancy J. Paste.

The silver wedding of Mr. & Mrs. John M. Kerr was celebrated at their home on West Bloom Street, Tuesday evening.  A large company attended.  Presents were given by members of four generations present and a general good time was enjoyed.

Mrs. Sarah Wark, the wife of Dr. Wark, of Ontario, mention of whose dangerous sickness is made in our Ontario correspondence, has since died and was buried on last Saturday afternoon, the funeral services being largely attended.

The secret of the marriage of James G. Potter, son of E.J. Potter, the photographer, of this city, and Miss Bessie D. Sutliff, at Dunkirk, N.Y., on April 5th. last, was this week first revealed to friends here and at Cleveland, at which latter place the couple reside.

In Probate Court Chas. Taylor has been appointed guardian of Arthur E., Chas. E. and Bessie L. Cross, minor heirs of Sarah M. Cross;  Margaret R. Rank, executrix of the estate of John Rank;  Jas. C. Laser, assignee of Theodor Wolfram;  and Etta Barton, administratrix of the estate of Martha A. Mack, deceased.

The remains of Mrs. Miranda Casebeer, who died at Hillsdale, Ind., on Tuesday, were interred in the Mansfield Cemetery this (Friday) afternoon.

Our brother editor, E.A. Brown, proprietor of the Bellville Star, has launched  the matrimonial ship upon life's conjugal sea.  He has taken for his first mate Miss Florence C. Long, an employee of the Star office, and it is our wish that a long and calm voyage of life together will still find with them a full cargo of peace, prosperity and contentment. Now, there, you naughty, romantic boy!

Almira P., wife of Laban Roberts, died at her home, 39 W. Second Street, on last Saturday evening, aged 63 years.  She was long a member of the Congregational church of this city.  Her remains were interred at Cleveland, Monday afternoon.

Mifflin (deferred from last week).  Mrs. Lydia Williams, an aged and respected lady, died here last Friday.

Mifflin (deferred from last week).  Frank Staman rejoices over the late occurrence at his house, a few days late for the election in 1908, but by then will there be a Republican party?

10 December 1887, Vol. LXX, No 29

After a protracted illness, Geo. Beelman, an aged and highly respected resident of Plymouth, died on Thursday.  Funeral today (Saturday).

Russell B. Rice, well known here and a former civil engineer and attorney of this place, is now at Las Vegas, New Mexico.  Two years ago he received the appointment of U.S. special examiner of surveys, and since engaged in the lucrative and onerous position he has been brevetted both a "Capt." and a "Col." by western newspapers.

In the Probate Court Eckels McCoy has been appointed executor of Landon McGriggor [McGregor];  H.W. Hildebrant, assignee of James M. Champion;  Lewis Shaver, executor of Levi B. Shaver;  Wm. R. Cuykendall, assignee of Albert Bray;  Leander J. Niman, guardian of Cora V. Niman and Ernest E. Niman, minor heirs of James M. Reese, deceased.

H.C. Grove, of Odense, Neosho Co., Kansas, who enlisted at Mansfield Feb., 1865, in Co. G., 101st. O.V.I., writes us and desires to know the address of some one or more members of said company.  The regiment was mustered out at Camp Chase, Sept. 7, 1865, and Mr. Grove proceeded thence to Missouri and afterwards to Kansas and never heard again of any of his comrades.  He says he is poor and broken down and desires the assistance of his former comrades in proving his claim for a pension.  Mr. Grove explains further that at the time of his enlistment he was a stranger at Mansfield, having just come here from Pennsylvania.  If any of the old soldiers who read this can assist him in the manner indicated we trust they will respond to his request.

Four children of George Nubert, of this city, and ranging from 12 to 3 years of age, have been received at the Children's Home.  Their mother died about one year ago and their father has become destitute on account of sickness.

Independence.  Mrs. Noble Calhoon died last Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock of lung fever in the 69th. year of her age.  The remains were interred at Perrysville the Monday following.  Mrs. Calhoon was numbered among our most valued citizens and her death is greatly mourned by a large number of relatives and friends.  May she also be numbered among the blessed.

Independence.  William Brubaker and Miss Allie Hess embarked on the matrimonial sea at the home of the bride's parents Wednesday night of last week.  Rev. Henry Keller, officiating.

Independence.  John Stull and Cora Fike were married a short time ago and on Monday night the boys gave them an old time belling.

Shelby.  Born, on Tuesday, Dec. 6, to Mr. & Mrs. John Smiley, a daughter.

Shelby.  Born, to Mr. & Mrs. Will Light on Dec. 1, a son.

Lucas.  Emanuel Smith is as happy as a turkey in a corn crib over the advent of a son.

Washington.  Pupils of the village school who have taken written examination are entitled to the following average grades for November:  Eddie Bush 84, Louis Bush 85, Lillie McFarland 92, Fred E. Taylor 90½, Norman Fleming 86-5/6, Harry Pearce 83-1/6, Wallace Schlosser 90-1/9, John Strater 87¼, Frank Schlosser 67-3/5, Joseph Stone 91, Albert McGregor 82-1/3, Etta Pearce 89, Charlie McGregor 73-1/6, Bertha Taylor 93¼, Della Stone 90-5/7, Lizzie Strater 88-5/6, Annie Taylor 90-6/7, Florence McPhern 87-4/5, Annie Strater 86.

Woodville.  Happy Logan is the second time called papa, a nice little daughter has been added to his family.

Woodville.  Russell Swisher is the happiest man in Woodville.  A little daughter has come to stay at his home.

Woodville.  William Frankenberger, of Colorado, where he has been several years, is visiting his old friends in this vicinity.

Independence.  Old man Doup was buried Wednesday.

Independence.  Chris. Amsbaugh's wife was buried last Friday at Berlin.  I. Hess was the undertaker.

Lucas.  George Ferguson, who has been absent for four years and supposed to have been dead, turned up lately at Newville, where he was seen by several of his old friends, but failed to connect with Lucas.

Lucas.  Mr. & Mrs. Jackson Myers are called upon to mourn the death of their youngest and only son Otto, who died of membranous croup on Monday evening, the 12th. of Dec., aged something over three years.

Lucas.  Lucas now claims the honor, according to newspaper reports, of having sent the youngest soldier of any state in the Union to the late war.  This soldier enlisted as a drummer boy in Co. B., 120th. O.V.I., at the age of 13 years and 3 months, and was the son of Wesley Hull, a former well known resident of this place, but now of Ft. Wayne, Ind., in which place Lewis O. Hull, the soldier referred to, resides at this time.  He served over three years, being a prisoner a good portion of the time.

Ontario.  Reuben Workhiser buried an infant child at Pleasant Hill cemetery last Friday.

Ontario.  Mr. & Mrs. Coats have taken rooms with the bride's parents and have gone to housekeeping.

Mary Schlupe has been taken to the state institution for feeble minded youth from this county.

Isaiah Cheney, of this city and a veteran of the Mexican war, has been granted an increase of pension.

Marriage licenses issued .... John D. Bennighoff & R. ___ Taylor;  Wilbur G. Hughes & ____  A. Boals.

A three-years-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Ross A. Glessner died at their home at Columbus on Sunday from diphtheria.  An older child died from the same disease two weeks before.  In their severe affliction the couple have the sympathy of their friends of this city.

The wedding nuptials of William Ackerman Jr., of West Fourth Street, and Miss Maude Brown, daughter of J.R. Brown, of South Main Street, have been announced to take place on Saturday evening, December 24th., Christmas Eve, at the home of the bride's parents.  The happy couple are to be congratulated on securing a mutual Christmas present and genial William is a a subject for congratulations from the members of the "Potato Club" of this city, of which he was one.

Probate Court Appointments ... Leander J. Niman, guardian of Cora V. and Ernest Niman;  Emma Laird, guardian of Harry Laird.

John Tohill, victim of the Republic disaster last winter, prefers the comforts of the Infirmary and has gone there to stay, James Jackson, his guardian, agreeing to pay for his maintenance at that institution.

Original pensions have been granted to Peter Dillon, Spring Mills;  Fred Long, Jacob Fulger and to the widow and minor children of Richard Gailey, all of this city;  Napoleon B. Wise, Mansfield, has been allowed an increase;  Jacob Fulger, receives a back pension of $1200.

24 December 1887, Vol. LXX, No 31

Independence.  Chas. Daugherty, father of J.M. Daugherty, died on Tuesday of general debility in his 82d. year.  The funeral took place on Thursday and the remains were interred at Four Corners.  Peace to the old man's ashes.

Lexington.  John G. Walker left for Pennsylvania this week to attend the funeral of his father-in-law, who died at the age of 86 years.

Shelby.  Married, on Saturday morning, at the M.E. parsonage, by Rev. G.A. Reeder, Sr., Miss Lettie M. DeVoe to Mr. Elmer Ballamy.  The happy couple left for Milan, O., immediately.

Shelby.  Frances, wife of Fred. Saviers, died at the house of her parents on Tuesday morning after a brief illness.  The funeral occurred on Thursday at 2 o'clock, Rev. G.A. Reeder officiating.  Mrs. Saviers was about 25 years of age and leaves her husband and a little child of two years.  She had a host of friends who sympathize with her husband in his deep bereavement.

Franklin Township.  George Shriver smiles over the advent of a young wood chopper in his family circle.

Original pensions have been granted to Wm. W. Flint and Wm. Higgins and an increase has been allowed to John Brannan, Thos. Parkinson and Stephen Clifford, all parties with post-office address at this city.

Probate Court Appointments ... John A. Noble has been appointed executor of William Noble;  W.S. Bradford and Geo. Moorhouse, executors of Thos. Saunders;  Hiram H. Sharp, guardian of Janette, Daisy, Blanford, Maggie, Harry and Gaylord Daugherty, minor children of Michael Daugherty, deceased.

An aged epileptic woman who gives her name as Moffet was brought from New Washington yesterday and placed in the Infirmary by Director Becker.

The funeral of Mrs. James Valentine, who died on Monday, was held from the family residence on North Mulberry Street on Wednesday afternoon.  She was a sister of the Rev. Dr. Wiles of this city and formerly resided in Monroe Township.

Dell F. Shafer, member of senior class at Heidelberg College, is home from Tiffin and will spend the holiday vacation with this parents at Bellville.

MARRIED - CLEMENS/FITER - At the residence of the bride's parents on the 20th. inst., Mr. David Clemens, of Fostoria, and Miss Mary Fiter, of Franklin Tp., Rev. J.A. Dunlap officiating.

DIED -- William Bottomley died Dec. 12th., of consumption, aged twenty-nine years, eight months and eight days.

Mrs. Parmelia Wise, relict of the late John Wise, died from paralysis in this city on last Saturday afternoon.  The funeral took place from her home on South East Diamond Street on Tuesday.  An only daughter remains.

Frank R. Wagner, machinist, died last Saturday morning from inflammation of the bowels at the home of his father, Frederick Wagner, on S.E. Diamond Street.  He was about 22 years of age.  The funeral was held on the following Monday afternoon.

MARRIED.  In the Methodist Episcopal parsonage on Park Avenue East, at six o'clock on the evening of Dec. 18, 1887, in the presence of a pleasant company of relatives and friends, Mr. Wm. J. Emptage and Miss Susie M. Carrol, of Mansfield, Ohio, Rev. G.W. Huddleston officiating.

Independence.  A brand new bouncing boy at Dave Zimmerman's.  Doc Hubbs hustled him in out of the blizzard Tuesday night.

Shelby.  Married on Dec. 25, by Rev. Hill, Mr. Charles Mitchell to Miss Mary J. Owings, both of this city.

A pension has been granted Mary L. Udell and an increase allowed to S. Clifford, both of this county.

Application has been made in the Probate Court for an inquest of imbecility on the person of Sarah Braden, of Washington Township, for hearing on January 10, 1888.

In the Probate Court Wm. M. Crawford has been appointed guardian of Ira E., Lydia L. and Byron Crawford, minor children of Mary Crawford, deceased;  Simon Stentz, guardian of Frank Johnson, minor child of Israel Johnson, deceased.

Through T.H. Wiggins, her attorney, Ida Muetz has petitioned for a divorce from her husband, John Muetz, alleging abandonment and failure to provide on the part of the defendant.  They were married about a year ago.  Plaintiff asks alimony also and restoration to her maiden name, Ida Hart.  Muetz is a boiler-maker it is alleged and receives good wages which is squandered in dissipation.

Abram Wilitt, an aged pioneer resident of Cass township, died last week at his home near Plymouth.  He was highly esteemed as a citizen and was an uncle of Thos. Wilett, ex-treasurer of this county.  Mr. Wilett was born in Columbiana county, Penn. in 1801 and removed to his late home when yet a wilderness.  He was a sterling Democrat, was possessed of a high moral character and lived a long life adorned with the noblest virtues of true manhood.

On Wednesday was solemnized the marriage of Wm. Kohler, Jr., and Miss Sadie Hess at the residence of the bride's father, Reuben Hess, in Jackson Township, Rev. Shuleberger, of Shelby, officiating.  About sixty invited guests were present.  An elegant supper was served to the company, which with their congratulations left the couple many handsome presents.  Mr. & Mrs. Kohler left on the same evening on a visit to Pittsburg.  The SHIELD extends congratulations and also acknowledges wedding cake, which the unmarried member of its editorial force has now beneath his pillow.  Look out!

Woodville.  Cyrus Wheeler, of Newville, and Melissa, youngest daughter of James Dice, were married last week in Mansfield by the Rev. G. Kemp.

MARRIED -- ARNOLD / WITMEYER -- At 1 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 29, 1887, in the Methodist Episcopal parsonage, Mr. David Arnold and Miss Arah V. Witmyer, of Ganges, O., Rev. G.W. Huddleston officiating.

MARRIED -- CUNNINGHAM / KISSANE -- At the residence of the bride's parents in this city, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 27, Mr. Levi Cunningham and Miss Alice Kissane, Rev. Huddleston officiating.

MARRIED -- TALLMAN / GOODMAN -- At the family residence, 116 East Fourth St., Mansfield, O., on Wednesday evening, Dec. 28, 1887, Mr. W.H. Tallman and Miss Sydney E. Goodman, of this city, Rev. G.W. Huddleston officiating.

MARRIED -- BURNS / MARKS -- In the Methodist Episcopal parsonage in this city, on Tuesday evening, Dec. 28, 1887, Mr. Charles E. Burns and Miss Lizzie Marks, of Mansfield, O., Rev. G.W. Huddleston officiating.

MARRIED -- BROWNELLER / WOLF -- At the bride's home on the 28th. inst., Mr. Chas. E. Browneller, of Franklin tp. and Miss Addie Wolf, of Weller tp., Rev. J.A. Dunlap officiating.  Quite a number of fine presents were given the bride.  A large company of guests were present.

The SHIELD last week mentioned the death of Mrs. James Valentine, of this city.  Miss Ida V. Valentine, daughter of James Valentine, was the person meant.  She was 25 years of age and died of consumption.  The deceased was a niece of Rev. Dr. Wiles.

A petition for divorce has been filed by Elomina Barr against her husband Wm. J. Barr.  The parties were married in this city, Feb. 2, 1876.  Adultery is charged on the part of the defendant with one Lena Franks at the American House at Shelby.  Plaintiff also asks alimony and the restoration of her maiden name.  No children have been born to them.

MARRIED -- SHAFFNER / KELLER -- At the residence of Mr. Andrew Boyce, six miles north of Mansfield, Dec. 17th., 1887, by Rev. H. McLaughlin, Mr. David Shaffner and Miss Susie Keller, both of Franklin Township, Richland County, Ohio.
