"The following, which appears on an old marriage record in the Probate Judge’s office, certifies to the first marriage in the county wherein the high contracting parties were colored:  

 “I do hereby certify that I solemnized the rites of matrimony  between Archibald Lewis (a black man) and Hannah Davis (a black woman), on the 27^th. day of September, 1821.  Given under my hand and seal this 28^th. day of September, 1821.  – ELLZEY HEDGES, J.P." "
