Petition to the President from citizens of Portage County, Ohio, 1862

PETITION TO THE PRESIDENT.
To the President of the United States of America.
The undersigned, citizens of Portage Co Ohio respectfully petition that, in the exercise of your powers as Chief Magistrate, and as "Commander-in-Chief of the Army of the United States, when called into the actual service of the United States"--you will call upon all the inhabitants of the United States, of all conditions, bond and free, to aid in supporting the Government, assured of its protection, under the flag of national Union and freedom.--and proclaim "liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof."

Note: Many of the signers were residents of Deerfield. The ringing phrase "to proclaim liberty throughout all the land, unto all the inhabitants thereof" comes from the Old Testament; it is also inscribed on the Liberty Bell.
