BERTHA A. HAINES, 73 DIES; SERVICES FRIDAY

Mrs. Bertha A. Haines, 73, formerly of 313 Westwood Ave., died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth hospital. She was the widow of Russell C. Haines, former Dayton policeman.

Mr. Forrest V. Hale, aged 66, retired farmer and secretary of Farmersville Gravel Co., died at 8:00 am Tuesday at his home in Farmersville.

Mr. Hale served for a number of years as president of the Jackson Twp. Farmers Mutual Fire Ins ___ and two ___ Jackson Township; 14 years a Deputy County Road surveyor under Parker Bookwalter and W. O. Pease; and as trustee of the Reformed Church for a number of years.

He was a member of Friendship Lodge, I.O.O.F., and of the Encampment.

Survivors include his widow, Sabina, one son, Floyd, three granddaughters and four brothers, Guy, Orion and Laren, of Germantown, and Ward of New Castle Indiana.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 pm at the home and at 2:30 at the Farmersville Reformed Church with Rev. Keill in charge. Burial in Germantown Cemetery.

Remains of Mrs. Mary Pearl Hamilton, 56 of 212 Sycamore st., who died Monday morning at the Miami Valley hospital were interred in Memorial Park cemetery Wednesday, following the funeral at 1:30 p. m. from the residence and at 2 p.m. at Whitmer brothers� funeral parlors.

John Hand, 43, died in Tuscon [sic], Ariz. Wednesday. He lived at 165 Sunrise av. Following an attack of influenza, Roy Hand, 47, well-known electricial, died at St. Elizabeth hospital. He leaves his wife, Lillian, three children, and his parents. After a brief funeral service at the house, 218 Kammer avenue, Friday at 7 p. m., the body will be taken to Niles, Michigan for burial, leaving Dayton at 11:30 p.m.

William Harbolt, who was taken to the Miami Valley Hospital with serious injuries on the night of September 22, after he had been struck by a Big Four train near the plant of the Crume Brick Company, died of his injuries Thursday morning. The case of Harbolt aroused interest several days ago, when it was learned that at the time he received his injuries he was on his way to meet his wife at the Dayton Union Station. The wife sat waiting in the Union Station, it was reported, for two whole days, expecting him to come. At length she made application to the Associated Charities for assistance, and was given money for her return to Owensboro, Ky., her native city. In the meantime her husband, the victim of an accident on his ay to meet her, lay unconscious in the Miami Valley Hospital, while officials were vainly endeavoring to ascertain his identity. A telegram, notifying the wife of her husband's death, was dispatched to Owensboro Thursday, but no reply had been received, according to the latest word from the hospital.

The funeral of Charles Hardcastle, who died Monday in the office of Dr. R. W. Adkins, S. Wayne av., was held Thursday afternoon at the residence, 14 Hassler st. The body was taken to Fairfield for burial.

Virgil O. Harlow, 62, who resided at Shiloh Springs and Olive rds., died at 9 p.m. Monday at his residence after an illness of a month. He was a native of Dayton and a veteran of World War I. Surviving are his wife, Rose; a daughter, Mrs. Fred Kramer Jr. of Dayton; two sisters, Mrs. LaDonne Shawen of West Milton, and Mrs. Lilly Shawen of Michigan, and one brother, Guy Hurlow [sic] of Dayton. Mrs. Harmon was almost 75 years of age, 27 years of which she had lived in Dayton. She came from Cilicothe, where she was born. She had been in the family hotel business for 36 years, practically all the time since she had resided in Dayton. She was located on the corner of Fourth and Ludlow streets on the site of the Elks' building for about 15 years. When this house was torn down she opened the Hotel Vendome on West Fifth street. She leaves her husband, S. L. Harmon and seven children, Mrs. Rose LaBoose, Chicago; Mrs. Jessie Ashbaugh, Columbus; Mrs. J. L. Donaldson, Dayton; Charles Galbreath, Columbus; Harry Galbreath, Los Angeles; Robert Galbreath, Dayton, and Bert Galbreath, now in Canada.

Henry David Harness, 49, died at the Dayton Osteopathic hospital, Friday, following a lengthy illness.� He lived in Hillsboro.� Mr. Harness was born near Jamestown and resided in Dayton the greater part of his life.� He had been an employee of American Aircraft and was a member of the Lutheran church.� Surviving are his wife, Hazel; five sons, Henry Jr. of the U.S. Navy; Bill of Dayton, and Bob, Jack, and James of Hillsboro; four daughters, Dorothy, Marilyn, Barbara, and Betty, all of Hillsboro; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. Mrs. Kate Henderson Hartley, died in Tippecanoe, aged 78 years and 10 days. She was the widow of Thomas Hartley who died 38 years ago.

WIFE OF PASTOR TAKEN BY DEATH

The death of Mrs. Martha Siefert Haulman, 33, 2338 East Fifth street, wife of Rev. O. W. Haulman, pastor of Memorial Reformed church, occurred at the Miami Valley hospital, Sunday afternoon. She was operated on for appendicitis last Monday. Peritonitis developed.

She lived formerly at New Carlisle. She leaves her husband; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Siefert of New Carlisle, and married sister, Mrs. Carrie Williss, living at Memphis, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Reformed church.

The funeral of Jacob Hawker, who was a resident of Dayton until about two years ago and was very well known here, was held Monday afternoon at Mt. Zion Church. It was attended by Harries Lodge, I.O.O.F., and K. of P., and a large number of friends. Dr. Hale officiated. The decedent was taken away on Friday by consumption, after failing in health for a period of two years. He was the son of Rev. Adam Hawker.

ONE OF COUNTY'S OLDEST PIONEERS LAID TO REST

The funeral of David L. Heck, aged 90 years, who died at his home nine miles west of the city on the Eaton pike, Monday last, was held Wednesday afternoon from the late residence.

Mr. Heck was born in Virginia, March 4, 1816. When he was but four years of age he came with his father to this county, where he has since resided. It will be remembered that immediately upon the family's arrival in Dayton, Mr. Heck's father was offered the Phillips House corner for an old white horse which had been driven from Virginia. The offer was flatly refused.

For 22 years Mr. Heck was a justice of the peace, and in 1880 was made an infirmary director. He was one of the best known men in his community, enjoying a host of friends who grieve over his demise.

In 1838 David Heck was married to Susan Shank. To this union ten children were born, seven sons and three daughters. All are yet living with the exception of Harriet, the eldest daughter. For 50 years Mr. Heck and his faithful companion traveled this life together, death separating them 14 years ago. Mr. Heck has been a member of the United Brethren church for years, being one of its oldest members.

Mr. Heck is survived by nine children, 25 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

The funeral services were held on Wednesday at the Beachler Brethren church, the services being conducted by Rev. G. A. Wahl. The interment was at Hill Grove cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edna A. Heck (nee Mote), 64, who died at 2 a.m. Thursday at her residence, 2337 N. Main st., following an illness of six years, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Westbrock funeral home, 1712 Wayne av., with burial in Woodland cemetery. The body may be viewed at the funeral home from 2 p.m. Friday until time of services. She was born in West Milton and had been a resident of Dayton for the past 38 years. Surviving is her husband, Charles P. Heck. One son, Kenneth, preceded her in death 10 years ago.

Mrs. Catherine R. Hefferman died Friday morning at her home, 132 High street, at the age of 45 years. The funeral will be held Monday morning from Holy Trinity Church with interment at Calvary.

Funeral of Miss Lucy M. Heidelbaugh, life-long resident of Dayton, who died Thursday afternoon, was held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the residence, 136 Wroe av. Burial was in Woodland.

FIND VETERAN DEAD IN LAKE

Mystery is connected with the death of Adam Heintz, 77, Civil war veteran, whose body was found in the lake at the rear of the Soldiers' Home pumping station late Monday. When discovered, the body had been in the water several days. The first belief was that the aged man fell into the lake and drowned. Heintz served during the Civil war in Company F, Second Maryland infantry. He came to the home February 11, 1890, from Frederick, Md. Burial was made in the home cemetery.

HEITZMAN, Mrs. Pearl Marie, age 77, of 4440 Eichelberger Ave., passed away Friday at the residence. Former employee of Pantorium Cleaners and retired in 1975. Funeral services for Mrs. Barbara Hemberger, 84, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Archie E. Mrs. Hemberger is survived by two sons, Paul and Fred, both of Philadelphia; two brothers, Paul and John Stomberger, both of Brookville; and three grandchildren. A Testing Tank Exploded Killing John H. Hemler of North Dayton

About 1:30 yesterday afternoon a sad accident occurred at the pump works of Smith & Vaile, North Dayton, which resulted in the death of John H. Hemler, who lived at 17 Harker Street.

Hemler, assisted by Joseph Byrne and Jesse Collins, was engaged in testing pumps in the building used for that purpose, when the steel testing tank, about four feet in diameter and six feet high, and partly filled with water, exploded with a terrific report. The bottom of the tank was blown out and the tank toppled over and fell to the floor. When the explosion took place the men were close to the tank. Byrne made his escape through a window, and Collins rushed for the door, closely followed by Hemler, who exclaimed: �Collins, I�m hurt; catch me;� and fell into his arms. He was carried into the office, but died before medical aid could be rendered. The skull of the unfortunate young man was crushed, though just how will probably never be learned. Whether he was struck by a piece of iron, or whether it was caused by the force of the concussion, is not known.

The Coroner was notified and viewed the remains, after which they were taken to his home in the patrol wagon.

Hemler was about 28 years of age and unmarried, living with his parents. He had been in the employ of Smith & Vaile for about three years and was a universal favorite, being a sober industrious young man. The firm deplore the accident, but it was one that no precaution could have prevented. The tank was made by Brownell & Co. last summer, and was considered unusually strong.

Ewell G. Henderson, 43, victim of a traffic accident Saturday night, died of a fractured skull Tuesday. An employee of the Dayton Rubber Manufacturing Co., he resided at 641 Burwood av. Surviving is his wife, Jessie.

Funeral services for Mrs. Alvina Hendricks, who died yesterday in a local hospital, will be held this morning at 11 o'clock in the First Baptist church. Her body will be sent to St. Louis for burial.

Funeral services for Clarence Henninger, [age illegible], World War veteran and employe of the Dayton Journal, who died suddenly Saturday afternoon at his residence, [street number illegible] N. Euclid av., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the home of his mother, Mrs. Christ Henninger, E. North st. Piqua. Burial will be made in Piqua cemetery.

Henninger, who served in the medical department of the Fifth division overseas, was wounded and gassed on several occasions, making it necessary because of the complications which developed for the physicians to remove his larynx.

FUNERAL SERVICE FOR B. W. HERR TO BE HELD MONDAY

Funeral services for Benjamin W. Herr, 79, army and navy veteran of the Civil war, who died yesterday morning in the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Abraham S. Bickham, 226 North Robert boulevard, will be conducted Monday morning at 10 o'clock in the residence of his daughter. Burial will be made in Woodland cemetery.

Death came following an illness of seven months. Last November Mr. Herr suffered a stroke of paralysis, resulting in a fall and injury to his hip, which confined him to bed.

He was born in Cincinnati, November 1842, the son of Rev. and Mrs. William Herr. AT an early age he came to Dayton with his parents and the family made its residence at First and Main streets, on the site now occupied by the Dayton City club. Later they moved into the old Herr homestead on Ludlow street.

In 1869, Mr. Herr and Miss Louise T. Hite were married at the home of her parents, near Louisville, Ky. The couple resided there until 16 years ago, when they came to Dayton. During the Civil war Mr. Herr served with both the army and navy. For the last 16 years he had been associated with the McCabe, Shepard & Coe company. He was a member of the Episcopal church.

Surviving are three daughters, Miss Eliza Herr, Mrs. Daniel W. Sale and Mrs. Binkham, of Dayton; one sister, Mrs. Mary W. Engle, Hermosa Beach, Cal., and six grandchildren.

The funeral of Mrs. Eliza P. Herr, widow of the late Rev. William Herr, was held at the Grace Methodist Episcopal church Friday morning at 10 o'clock, Rev. Dr. Royal officiating. The interment took place at Woodland cemetery.

MRS. SARAH R. HERR PASSES AWAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS

Miss Sarah Ruth Herr died on Tuesday evening, September 8th at her home on Ludlow street, where she had lived for 25 years. She had been in failing health since last spring, but her strong constitution and bright, uncomplaining, cheerful disposition bore her up until a month ago when it became apparent to her family and friends and to herself that she would not be long on this side of the river of life. The end came as she would have wished. Swiftly came the Angel of death and gently closed her eyes in the last sleep. She needed no preparation for the great change, all of her life had been a preparation. She became a member of the Methodist church when she was 12 years old, and through all the years of her life had been not only a good Christian, but a force for good in her church and in the community. She was born at West Marietta, O., on the 19th of September, 1832. She was the daughter of the late Rev. William Herr of the Cincinnati conference of the Methodist church and was an earnest helper and companion to her father. Interested in Sunday school and church work. Miss Herr was very fond of Dayton, where she had passed almost all of her life, coming here in 1844 and having lived here continuously ever since. She enjoyed travel, having spent some time in California with her brother, but she never found any place she liked so well as Dayton, and enjoyed its beauties, watching its growth and development and noting every added improvement. She was more than usually interested in the questions of the day, and read the newspapers with great pleasure, and loved to talk with friends on affairs of moment. Miss Herr was a descendant of Gen. Nathaniel Greene and was a Daughter of the Revolution. She was also a member of the Emerson club, being fond of books and literary work. Sarah was the first of the family to go. Her oldest brother, Mr. James Herr, lives in San Francisco. Mrs. David Engle is her only sister. Mr. Whitney Herr of Louisville is her brother.

Death came to her as life had been, full of trust in the love that never falleth. Only transition into the broader world beyond the sighing and the weeping, into the fullness of God's perfect day.

Funeral of Miss Sarah Herr

The funeral services of Miss Sarah Herr took place Friday afternoon at the late home on Ludlow street. The Rev. Dr. Jameson, pastor of Grace Methodist church, conducted the services, Miss Herr having been a member of that church for many years and active in all its work. After reading the 19th Psalm, Rev. Jameson read the burial service of the Methodist church and offered prayer. AT the conclusion, Mr. Carl Pirsch sang "I Am Redeemed." and services were concluded at the grave. The pall bearers were Mr.. L. D. Reynolds, Mr. Adamson, Dr. Will Webster, Mr. Harry Munger and Mr. Will Sullivan. The rooms were filled with flowers that were taken to the cemetery and placed over the grave. [Woodland]

AT A RIPE OLD AGE
After Many Years' Service As a Minister of the Gospel, Rev. Wm. Herr is Called to a Higher Home

Rev. William Herr, D.D., probably the oldest minister of the Methodist Episcopal church in Ohio, died at 10:45 o'clock Sunday morning at his residence on North Ludlow street, this city, after a long and useful career as a minister of the gospel.

He was born on the 9th of March, 1806, at Hagerstown, Md., and came to Ohio with his parents in 1818, locating at Lancaster. He was converted, or, as he always expressed it, "was born again" while attending the Athens University at Athens, O., and thereafter became a minister of the gospel. He first preached at Marietta, O., and later occupied the pulpit of various churches in West Virginia as pastor.

In the early '30's he went to Michigan, where he preached for several years in several localities. It was in 1840 that he became a member of the Ohio conference and located at Columbus. He was transferred to the Cincinnati conference in 1847 and became pastor of the Fourth-street chapel. At the termination of his pastorate there he came to Dayton for two years and again being returned to that city. He later went to Xenia, Springfield, Urbana, Lancaster and other Ohio cities.

He became general agent of the American Bible society in 1860, a position he held until 1875, a period of fifteen years. It was during this period and at the time of the war that he enlisted as chaplain of the famous 93d Ohio. However, he was not accepted on account of his age. His semi-centenary sermon was delivered at Urbana, O., 1878.

In 1876 he settled in Dayton and since resided in the residence where he died on North Ludlow street. It was at that time that he ceased his active work as a minister, though he was for sometime chaplain of the Widows' Home. He has been a supernumerary minister of the M.E. church for the last sixteen years.

Rev. Dr. Herr was married in 1830 to Miss Sarah Whitney of Marietta. She died in July, 1843, leaving two sons and two daughters, all of whom survive him. They are Sarah R. Herr, living at home; John J. Herr of San Francisco, Mrs. D. W. Engle of this city and Mr. B. Whitney Herr of Louisville, Ky. He married a second wife, Eliza P. Swain, daughter of Judge Swain, in this city in 1845. She survives him also. They had no children by this marriage.

The deceased was the last of a family of twelve children. The youngest child, he outlived all the children, who with two exceptions lived to a ripe old age. Death was due to old age. He had been gradually sinking for the last sixteen months.

The funeral, which will be private, will take place from the late residence on North Ludlow street on Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock.

William T. Herrman Dies at Plainfield, N.J.

City Solicitor Herrman received the sad intelligence from Plainfield, N.J., announcing the demise of his uncle, William T. Herrman, which occurred suddenly from heart affection. The deceased was formerly a resident of Dayton. He was engaged in the grain trade at that time. The older residents of the city who knew him will regret his passing.

HERZOG, Ellwood P. (Woody), age 65, of 3203 Birchall Dr., Beavercreek, passed away Wednesday at the Miami Valley Hospital. Survived by wife, Betty; daughter, Holly Herzog at home; son, Nicholas Herzog at home; Ted and his wife, Barb of Beavercreek; sister, Ruth Delamore of Ohio; brothers, Lester and Paul Herzog of Dayton; 1 grandson, Jody. He was a tool engineer at Delco. A member of Ascension Church, and Ace's Athletic Club. Funeral services of Mrs. Elizabeth Hess, 94, widow of the late Henry Hess, who died Thursday at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Alice Miller, 510 Linwood st., will be held there at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Burial will be made in Salem.

Nellie Ruth Hess, age 82, of Britton Rd., Monroe, O. died at Mt. Pleasant, Home Monday April 28. Her husband Harry Hess preceded her in death in 1961. Services will be held Thursday 2 p.m. at the Wilson-Schramm Memorial Home Middletown, O. Visitation 1 hour prior to service. Burial in Beavertown Cemetery.

DEATH OF AN OLD CITIZEN

Abraham Hesson, of Van Buren township, died Wednesday, January 13, 1875, after a long and severe illness, caused by a Cancer on his head. He was born in Frederick County, Maryland, March 9, 1794, and at the time of his death, was nearly 81 years of age. He came to this county in 1816, and has resided in this vicinity ever since. In December 1820, he was married to Elizabeth Fultz. They had three children, two sons and a daughter. His wife died in June last. One son and the daughter, wife of Thomas W. Henderson, of Madriver township, survive him.

Mr. Hesson was possessed of a robust constitution, and was known as a quiet, industrious citizen; he was buried at Zion's Church Cemetery yesterday. The services being conducted by Rev. W. A. Bowman.

Remains of Mrs. Dolulu Hester, 23, who died Monday morning, were laid to rest in Woodland cemetery, Thursday afternoon, following the funeral at 2 o'clock in the Allen A.M.E. church. She leaves her husband, daughter, father, four sisters and three brothers.

GEORGE W. HEWELL, 83, a farmer living on the Brandt pike, some six miles north of Dayton, passed away Monday morning.

Funeral of Mrs. Goldie Heyduck, 34, who died at 3 p.m. Friday at the residence of her mother, Mrs. Clara Hinkle, 30 Anna st., after an illness of three months, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Weaver mortuary on N. Main st. Burial in Memorial Park. She leaves her husband, Walter; three sisters, Mrs. Mary Peterson, Mrs. Martha Price and Miss Josephine Hinkle; her brother, Charles, and five children, all residents of Dayton.

Robert Edward Heywood, 17-month-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Audrey Heywood, died at 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the residence, 516 West Third street. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the residence. Burial Woodland cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Irene West Hickman, 48 year old, who died Tuesday night following a heart attach at her residence, 182 Woodburn avenue, Oakwood will be held at 2 p.m. Friday from the Woodland cemetery chapel, with burial in Woodland. She is survived by her husband, Harvey, one son, Arthur, and three sisters.

William Henry Hipple died at his home on Riverview avenue Saturday at 3 o'clock. Mr. Hipple had been a resident of Miamisburg all his life. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Hipple and was born May 23, 1850. He was married to Catharine Roast in December of the year 1870. About three years ago he was severely burned in the Twine Factory fire. The departed leaves behind his widow a family of four sons and one daughter--John W., Thomas, Harry and William Jr., and Mrs. Mary Ayers.

Three half brothers--Horace, James and Cleveland, and three half sisters-- Mrs. Florence Gebhart, Mrs. James Lightcap, Mrs. Wm. Gebhart, Mrs. Sam Beck and Mrs. Bertha Taylor also survive.

The funeral services were conducted from the Lutheran church on Tuesday afternoon at 3 o'clock by pastor, Rev. J. S. Herold.

Funeral services for Barbara Marie Hiten, 6-month-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Hiten of 1524 Hearthstone dr., who died at 5:45 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth hospital, following a brief illness, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Parkview Church of the Nazarene, with burial in Memorial Park cemetery. The funeral of George R. Hively was held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence of his son, Harry R. Hively, 525 South Broadway. Burial was made in Woodland cemetery.

John Hively, 97, one of the oldest residents of the city, died at 7:15 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Hirsch, 42 Frank street. He was ill but two days, the ailment causing his death being due to the infirmities of years. He was a man of hardy constitution, enjoying robust health even at his advanced period in life.

Mr. Hively was born in Pittsburg, Pa., but came to Dayton when he was 20 years old. He settled on a farm near the Bluffs and lived there until his retirement about 45 years ago. For some time he had been making his home with his daughter, Mrs. Hirsch.

Four children survive, Mrs. Jane Olinger of Union City, Mrs. William Hirsch of Dayton, George R. Hively of Dayton, and James Hively of Michigan City, Ind. He leaves over a hundred grand children and great grandchildren.

Funeral services will probably be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the residence, burial being made in Greencastle cemetery.

HOBBS, Mrs. Mildred J., age 38, of Mio, Mich., died early Friday morning as a result of an automobile accident. Albert M. Hoerner, aged 71, died unexpectedly of a heart attack at his late residence on West Market St., Friday at 11:30 pm. A lifelong resident of this community he was prominent in business and social activities.

For 48 years he had owned and operated the A.M. Hoerner Flour Mill, supplying grocers and companies in the surrounding communities with his product. While at his farm west of town, on Friday afternoon, he complained of illness which resulted in his death late that evening.

He was affiliated with several lodges including Germantown Lodge No. 257, F. & A.M., Germantown Eastern Star, Scottish Rite and Antioch Shrine, of Dayton, also with Mrs. Hoerner was an active member of the Germantown Shrine Club.

Survivors include his widow, Mrs. Ada Hoerner, a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Wetja and a granddaughter, Miss Harriet Wetja, two sisters, Mrs. Mary Hoerner, of Dayton and Mrs. Pearl Snyder, of Miamisburg; one brother, Stephen Hoerner of Dayton.

The members of the local Masonic Lodge held services at 8:00 pm Monday.

Funeral services were held at the residence, Tuesday, at 2:30 pm with the Rev. C. J. Snyder officiating. The Scottish Rite service was also held at that time with the ring presented to his granddaughter, Harriet. Burial was made in Germantown Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements of Evelyn Marie Hoffman, 12, daughter of Richard and Elizabeth Hoffman, of Toledo, who died at St. Elizabeth hospital at 1:30 Thursday afternoon, have not been made. They body is at Frank Riesinger's funeral parlors. The child was visiting James C. Hoffman, 1035 S. Broadway, with her parents when she became ill and died within a few days.

Marvin G. Hoffman, two-and-a-half-year-old son of Vern and Elsie Hoffman, 736 Cleverly Rd., died Wednesday.

Other survivors: a brother and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hoffman of Muscatine, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Elgin Moyer of Chicago, Ill.

Funeral services of Edward E. Holden, who died suddenly Tuesday evening, were held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock at the residence, 41 South Findlay street. The body was shipped to his old home in Springfield, for burial.

George W. Holden, aged 72, a former prominent resident of Dayton and the president of the Holden Patent Book Cover company of Springfield, Mass., died at his home in that city April 27. While he was very young his parents moved to this city. They went by boat, train, river steamer, canal boat, and were three weeks on the way. He was educated in the public schools and the high school in this city. In 1854, he went to Worcester and founded there the industry manufacturing writing ink, which is still continued by the Stanford ink company of Chicago. In 1864, he bought an interest in the wholesale book and stationery business of this city and the firm of Payne, Holden & Co. was known not only in this city, but in the middle west. In 1856, he invented the first adjustable book cover and patented the device the following year. He took out other patents from time to time. In 1886 he removed to Springfield, Mass., from Dayton, and has continued the business under the name of the Holden Patent Book Cover company. For years he has been the head of the largest company manufacturing this kind of goods in the country. He leaves his widow, four children and three sisters of which Mrs. Samuel N. Brown and Mrs. David A. Rouk reside in this city.

The funeral of Mrs. Mary Hole, who died Saturday at her home, one mile north of Kingsville, was held Tuesday afternoon from the residence. Rev. F. N. McMillin, pastor of Memorial Presbyterian church, conducted the services. She was buried in Woodland cemetery.

Mrs. Catherine Holford, 78, died at 10:30 p.m. Friday at her residence, R.R. 11, Springboro pk., following an illness of six months. Funeral at the Hoyne funeral home, 1817 E. Third st., with burial in West Carrollton cemetery. The body may be viewed from Sunday afternoon.

Arthur Holmes, 66, 1119 Everett dr., died at his home Wednesday at 11 p. m. Surviving are the widow, Barbara E.; one son, Clarence; a daughter, Mrs. Hercelia Jones; one granddaughter, Nancy Holmes; two brothers, William M. of Detroit and Fred of Monroe, Mich. Mr. Holmes was employed as a draftsman at the Requarth Lumber Co. He was a member of Adrian Lodge No. 19, F. and A. M., I. O. O. F. No. 8, Adrian, Mich., and Westminster Presbyterian church. He had lived in Dayton 22 years.

DYING IN ASYLUM
Authorities Unable To Locate Relatives of Frank Holmes

Troy, O., April 21 - Probate Judge L. E. St. John has been unable to locate any relatives of Frank Holmes, who is reported to be near death at the Dayton state hospital. When Holmes was committed he told the court that his wife resided in Racine, Wis., and a brother and sister were in Fort Wayne, Ind. In a communication with the chief of police of the latter city it seems that there is another Frank Holmes and the officer is unable to identify the man picked up in this city and committed to the state institution.

Funeral services of Harry A. Holmes, were held Friday morning at 8 o'clock at the residence on Edison avenue and at 8:30 o'clock at the St. John's church. Burial Calvary.

Funeral services of Mrs. Villa Holsapple, wife of Daniel Hosapple, who died Saturday, will be held at the residence, 79 South Warren street, Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, and will be conducted by Rev. J. G. Huber, pastor of Oak street U.B. church. Interment will be made in Woodland cemetery.

Sudden Death of a Pioneer

Abram Holtzapple, a pioneer of Montgomery county, died suddenly yesterday morning at the residence of his son-in-law, Henry Yike, five miles south of the city, on the Lebanon pike. Mr. Holtzapple arose yesterday morning, apparently feeling quite as well as usual. He ate a hearty breakfast and retired to his room. This was the last seen of him alive. Members of the family heard him moving about the room as late as 9 a.m., but when they went to call him for dinner, they found him dead. Mr. Holtzapple came to Montgomery county from Pennsylvania many years ago. His wife died about three years ago, and since that time he has made his home with his son-in-law. He was 89 years of age, and his death was probably due to the feebleness of his advanced years. His funeral will take place Saturday afternoon. The remains will be interred at David�s church cemetery.

HOMAN, Hazel P., age 85, of Dayton, died Friday. COUNCILMAN AT FAIRFIELD DIES

John Henry Honaker, 51, member of the village council of Fairfield, died Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at his Fairfield residence. He had been ill with pneumonia about three weeks.

Honaker was widely known through having been employed as a guard at Patterson field for several years.

He was a veteran of both the Spanish-American and the World Wars and held the rank of major in the reserve corps of the United States army. During the World War he served overseas in the army supply service.

Surviving him are his widow, Gertrude; his son, John L. Honaker, and three brothers, Rufus, Roland and Dewey Honaker, all of Honaker, Va. He had been living in Fairfield about 15 years.

Died on the 17th instant, Mrs. Jane Hood, wife of Andrew Hood Esq. of Montgomery county.

Private funeral services for Charles E. Hooper, 146 Maple st., who died Wednesday at 7:25 p.m. at Miami Valley hospital, will be conducted from the Louis F. Berk funeral home, 42 Linden av., Saturday at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

Born in Dayton, he was the son of William and Bertha Hooper. For a number of years he was a telegraph operator for the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Dayton lodge, and a member of the First Lutheran church.

Surviving are his widow, Louise; one sister, Bessie Gugel, and a brother, William, of Dayton.

At the National Home for D. V. S., near Dayton, Ohio, on July 30th, 1881, Thomas G. Hooper, aged 47 years, late of Company A, 2d Regiment Kentucky. Cause of death, diarrhea.

BURY MARTIN HORNICK ON WEDNESDAY

Funeral services of Martin Hornick, formerly of Xenia, who died Sunday at St. Elizabeth hospital, will be conducted at 9 o'clock Wednesday morning at the Corpus Christi church. Burial will be in St. Bridget's cemetery, Xenia.

Remains may be viewed at Westbrock's funeral home, S. Wayne av., on Tuesday.

Mr. Hornick was born in Xenia and lived there many years, being engaged in business. Until his last illness he was living in Dayton and was employed at the Dure Pump Co. He leaves his wife and daughter, Mrs. Edward Keller; three sisters, Mrs. J. J. Lampert, Mrs. K. Krebs, and Miss Mary Hornick, of Xenia.

He belonged to the Catholic Knights of Ohio and the Eagles.

MRS. HORSTMAN TO BE BURIED WEDNESDAY

The funeral of Mrs. Edith M. Horstman, life-long resident of South Park, who died Wednesday morning, will be held Saturday morning at 7:30 o'clock from the residence, 426 Lowes street, and at 8 o'clock at Holy Angels church, South Park. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery.

Funeral services for Mrs. Agnes Houston, 50, who died Saturday at Miami Valley hospital, were held Tuesday at 1 p. m. at the Wesleyan M. E. church. Burial was made in New Carlisle. Mrs. Houston, who made her home at 801 S. Summit st., is survived by five daughters, one son and one brother.

HORTON--Walter, died Wednesday, Oct . 23, at 6:30 a. m., age 52 years, 1 month, 1 day. Funeral from residence, 309 S. Jefferson street, Saturday morning, Oct. 26, at 10 o'clock. Interment Calvary.

In Eaton, on the 11th instant, after a protracted illness, Mrs. Sallie Hubbell, wife of Jacob A. Hubbell, aged ?9 years.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sallie Hubler, 72, of Miamisburg, mother of Colonel Robert I. Hubler, of the Third Ohio infantry, will be held Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at her late home and at 2:30 from the Reformed church in that city.

Pallbearers will be Lieut. Colonel Karl I. Best, Major Leon Smith, Captain D. A. Dorman, Chaplain W. H. Hughes, Lieut. J. F. Ohmer and Lieut. Robert Ohmer, all officers of the Third regiment. Burial will be in Hill Grove cemetery. Many friends from this city will go the Miamisburg for the funeral.

Mrs. Hubler died Saturday afternoon after an illness of several weeks. She had been a lifelong resident of Miamisburg and was the widow of the late Washington Hubler.

The Third regiment band gave a sacred concert in Cincinnati Sunday in memory of Mrs. Hubler.

Railroad men were startled yesterday by the unexpected announcement of the death of Conductor Thomas S. Houston, one of the oldest conductors on the C.H.& D., and probably the oldest railway man on that road. He was stricken with apoplexy Monday night at Toledo, and survived but a short time.

Houston passed through Dayton at 11 o'clock the same day on his train to Toledo, and was then to all appearance in excellent health. He has been on the C.H.& D. since 1864, and before that was connected for a number of years with the Ohio & Mississippi, and previous to that was employed on the Erie Road. He was a sociable, cheerful and engaging man, and his friends are numerous. His home was in Lockland, Ohio, where his remains will be taken. Mr. Houston was a Mason of good standing, and a member of the Scottish Rite.

The death of Walter Franklin Howard, baby son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank M. Howard of West Fifth street, which occurred Sunday, has caused sorrow in many homes in this city, where Mr. and Mrs. Howard (Minnie McCammon) have always lived, and their friends are legion. Death came as a shock to the devoted parents, who had hopes that the illness of 10 days had abated, and their child was out of danger. Saturday the attending physicians gave encouragement, but the change later in the day indicated the hopelessness of the task to save the precious life of death Baby Walter, whose one short year of life had added joy to home folks and had been a source of happiness to all who knew the family. The baby was taken ill the day following his first birthday, and all that could be done by the best physicians was of no avail, and after a severe illness of 10 days death resulted Sunday. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon from the family residence on West Fifth street at 2:30 o'clock. Burial at Woodland.

Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock the funeral of Julius John Huber was conducted at the residence, 437 East May street. Burial was made in Woodland cemetery.

Funeral services of Jessie C. Hudson, who died Wednesday morning at her residence, 533 Sheridan av., were conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the Woodland cemetery chapel.

HUDSON, Michael Keith, age 37 of 19 Sunnybrook Ct., died Saturday morning at the Dayton VA Medical Center, after a lengthy struggle with luekemia [sic]. Mike had served his country honorably in the U.S. Army. He is survived by his mother and father Delma and Venus of Trotwood; a daughter Elizabeth Joann of W. Carrollton; 2 sisters Susan Sawyers of Dayton, and Cheryl Mantle of Trotwood, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Protestant Chapel Dayton VA Center. Interment will follow at the Dayton National Cemetery. Chaplain Donnie Burris officiating. HUELSMAN, Mildred R., of Centerville, died Wednesday. Mrs. Huelsman was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony J. and sons, Paul A. and James L. Survived by children, David L. Huelsman, Howard T. Funeral services for Mrs. Rachel Huffer, 78, who died Saturday evening, will be held at 10 o'clock this morning in the Lower Miami church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Funeral of Mrs. Evangeline Huffine, 68, wife of Alexander Huffine, who died Sunday at 10 a.m., was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the residence, 1322 Phillips av. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

FORMER G.A.R. COMMANDER DIES

Amos Huffman, aged 78, Wilmington, Ohio, former commander of the Department of Ohio, G.A.R., died at Long Beach, Cal., Sunday morning, according to a dispatch received late Sunday night.

The deceased was a native of Edenton, Ohio, and served throughout the Civil war in Company D, Second O.V.I. He was commander of the Ohio department, G.A.R., in 1905 and 1906.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Mrs. O. H. Gilbert, of Dayton, and Mrs. C. A. Holiday, of Wilmington, and a son, William, of Indianapolis. Burial will be in Washington.

Jacob Huffman, 65, one of the oldest members of Painters and Decorators Union No. 249, died Sunday evening at 8:30 at his residence, 2714 Lakeview avenue, after a lingering illness. The funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 8:30 at the residence. The body will be taken to Lewisburg, where interment will be made. He is survived by his wife, one son, Herbert, and one daughter, Lena.

Mr. Huffman formerly lived in Lewisburg, but came to Dayton many years ago and had spent the greater part of his life in this city. He joined the Painters and Decorators Union in 1899 and had been one of its most active members since that time, serving several terms as president of the organization.

Mr. Huffman's genial and kindly disposition had made him beloved by all with who he came in contact, and his passing will cause a pang of sincere regret in the hearts of a large circle of friends.

The members of the Painters Union will meet in their hall Tuesday evening at 7:30, and will then go to the residence of Mr. Huffman, where they will pay their last respects to their departed brother.

The Last Sad Rites Over the Remains of the Late William P. Huffman

The funeral of the late William P. Huffman took place yesterday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the old homestead, on Huffman Hill. The immediate relatives and extensive family connection, together with the many friends of the dead banker, assembled to pay their respects to the departed, made an assemblage that was too large to be accommodated at the residence, and many were obliged to listen to the service from the shaded lawn.

The casket, of rich black cloth and silver trimmings, rested on a bank of floral offerings in the parlor. At the head stood large floral pieces of rare flowers, while other available portions of the room were filled with similar tributes of esteem and respect for him whose earthly remains were soon to be consigned to the grave.

Rev. Lonnabury officiated. The service was short and impressive, while the address and words of sympathy to the bereaved family were touching and welcome.

At the close of the service a last look was taken of the well known features, then cold in death, and the casket was closed. The pall bearers, Messrs. O. M. Gottschall, J. K. McIntire, J. R. Reynolds, Geo. W. Honk, Chas. A. Phillips, Samuel McKee, P. E. Gilbert and T. S. Babbitt bore the casket to the hearse and the funeral cortage wended its way slowly through the city to Woodland cemetery.

The crowd at Woodland cemetery was even greater than at the family residence. The scene as the casket was lowered into the grave was one long to be remembered.

WOMAN BELIEVED OLDEST PENSIONER IS BURIED HERE
Believed to be the oldest war pensioner in the state of Ohio, according to John H. Cusick, president of the Soldiers' Relief, Mrs. Martha Hughey, 99 years old, who died Wednesday at the home of her granddaugher, Mrs. Jack Karns, 75 Mary avenue, was buried yesterday afternoon. Funeral services were held from the home of Mrs. Karns and burial was in Woodland cemetery.

Mrs. Hughey, was the widow of William R. Hughey, a cavalry officer under General Scott in the Mexican war and up until a brief time before her death she loved to tell of her early experiences, including many hardships, and to give reminiscences of the war. Most of her life was spent in Highland county where she was born, April 15, 1819. For the last three years she had made her home here in Dayton with her granddaughter. Mrs. Hughey was the youngest of 11 children, all of whom lived to be more than 80 years old.

William R. Hughey left Cincinnati, July 9, 1846, for Mexico, the journey to the enemy's country requiring about three weeks. He did escort duty between Camargo, supply base for General Taylor's army, and Monterey. He also participated in the battle of Monterey, after a forced and hard march, and other battles.

Note: death certificate gives father as Absolm Brown, born Pennsylvania, and mother as Mary Kessinger, born North Carolina. Martha Brown married William Hughey, 5 June 1851, in Highland County, Ohio.

HULTS, Mrs. Fleta, age 81 of 821 Leland Av., Dayton, O. passed away at Grandview hospital Friday. She is survived by several cousins. Services 2 p.m. Monday at the Kramer & Moeller Funeral Home, Lewisburg, O. Interment Roselawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday.

Jewell, the infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hummerich, of 32 Stapleton Court, died Friday morning at the age of 1 month. The remains will be shipped to Westphaalia [sic], Ind. Saturday where the interment will be made Sunday.

HUMPHREY � Mrs. Kate Humphrey, died Saturday at 12:30. Funeral Tuesday morning at 10 o'clock at the residence, 18 South Brown street. Interment, Woodland.

Funeral services for Pfc. Harry B. Hunter, formerly of 125 Bish av., who was killed in action Nov. 26, 1943, in North Africa, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Berk and Jensen funeral home, 42 Linden av. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Monday.

Born in Dayton, he was graduated from Roosevelt high school in 1938 and was employed at the Ohmer Corp. until May, 1941 when he enlisted as Air Force mechanic. He was 24 years old at the time of his death.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Mamie Hunter; two brothers, Edward W. and Cassell, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunter, all of Dayton.

Funeral of Mrs. James B. (Dell) Hunter, 73, was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the residence, 54 Mary av. Burial in Memorial Park.

The body of Henry Huston was sent to his former home in Lexington, Ky., by Undertaker Frank Riesinger, Tuesday evening.

The funeral of Ruth Virgil Huston, the 4-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Huston, 2913 East Third street, will be held this morning at 10 o'clock at the Third Street Baptist Church. The interment will be made in Beavertown cemetery. He death occurred Sunday.

Funeral services for George C. Hutzelman, 74, who died Thursday at 4:50 p.m. at the Miami Valley hospital, will be conducted at the Morris Sons funeral home, 1809 E. third st. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery. He is survived by two sons, Ray and Harry Hutzelman, both of Dayton; six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Moore, Mansfield, O., and two brothers, Charles and John of Chicago.

Funeral services for Charles L. Hylander, 76, who died Tuesday morning at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. E. E. Caldwell, 2106 W. Second st., will be held Thursday at 1 p. m. at the First Church of God. Burial will be in Nettles Creek cemetery near Westville.
