The body of Mrs. John Quincy Adams, wife of the man in charge of the heat engineering department identified with Schenck and Williams, has been taken to Columbus for burial.

Col. A. A. Adams, Mexican war veteran, and who recruited a company for the Second Ohio Calvary, Civil war, died in Warren Friday night.

Near Paintersville, Greene county, on the 13th instant, Miss Luella Adams, daughter of Jackson Adams.

RETIRED MINISTER DIES AT HOME

Rev. Ambrose Aegerter, an Evangelical United Brethren (EUB) minister since 1923, died at his home yesterday after a long illness. A native of Cambridge, O., he resided at 1849 Fauver avenue.

After graduating from the Cincinnati School of Theology and the Evangelical Theology seminary at Napierville, Ill. in 1923, Mr. Aegerter serves [sic] as pastorate for EUB churches in Evansville, Indianapolis and Kendalville, Ind., before coming to Dayton in 1943.

Mr. Aegerter served as pastor of the Wayne Avenue EUB church, Wayne and Xenia avenues, for 10 years, then became the pastor of the First Miamisburg EUB church in 1953, where he remained until his retirement in June, 1959.

Survivors include his wife, Hannah H.; two daughters, Mrs. Roma Wilson, of Spencer, Ind., and Mrs. Helen Heinmiller, of Dayton; six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Services for Mr. Aegerter will be announced by the Schlientz and Moore funeral home, 1632, Wayne avenue, today.

Funeral services of Charles Henry Ake, will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the residence, 626 North Taylor street. Burial will be made in Willowview cemetery.

FORMER SLAVE, 109, DIES HERE

Horace Alexander, 109, a slave in the south before the Civil War, when he was freed, died Friday at 6:30 a.m. at Good Samaritan hospital. He had been ill for several weeks, going to the hospital Feb. 21.

Born of parents who were both slaves, at Cumberland, Ky., Alexander was owned by a family named Allen. Many times he had told of seeing groups of native Africans who were brought to this country to be sold, while he was supervisor of the other slaves at the Allen home. He also remembered and told of how his owners had concealed him in straw piles when soldiers had visited the Allen home in search of slaves to recruit in the army, and kept him hidden there until after they had departed.

He was 36 years old when the Civil War began, 60 years old when the first electric street railway began operation, 77 years old when the first radio message was sent, and 89 when the World War began.

His first wife died 50 years ago, and his second wife 12 years ago. His only son died a number of years ago. He came to Dayton in 1897 from Memphis, Tenn.

Alexander made his home at times with Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bridges, 631 Nassua St. Bridges, himself 78, had also been owned by the Allen family as a slave. His only surviving relative is a brother-in-law, Joseph Cury, Company 9, Soldiers Home.

The reunion of the gallant old Eleventh Ohio Infantry yesterday, brings to mind the fact that Charles Allen, of Company A, killed at Hawks Nest on New River, West Virginia, August 25, 1861, was the first Dayton soldier killed in the war, and it is a sad fact to know that his remains were the only ones of Company A�s dead that were not brought home for burial. John Wroe of this city, and a member of the same company was killed on Cotton Mountain, five miles from Hawks Nest, November 10, 1861.

John Allen, veteran railroad man, died Saturday at his residence, 914 Washington street. He was 77.

Allen was the oldest employe of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad here. He had seen 53 years of service.

Funeral services will be held from the residence Tuesday morning at 7:30 and from Sacred Heart church at 8. Burial in Calvary.

His widow; two sons, John and Harvey, and a daughter, Margaret, survive him.

The funeral of Loren Clifford Allen, 17 months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Allen of 729 Brooklyn av., who died Sunday night at the Miami Valley hospital, was held at 2 p. m. Wednesday at the residence. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery.

The death of Charles Anderson, 58, occurred Sunday night at the residence, 331 Horace street after an attack of apoplexy, which he suffered Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Davis Sewing Machine company.

Mr. Anderson was a well known residence of Dayton, where he had lived 30 years. He had worked at the Davis Sewing Machine company as a carriage painter for a long time, and was well thought of by employers and fellow employes [sic]. He leaves his wife and three children.

Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Charles Anderson--Funeral services of Charles Anderson were held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the residence, 133 Horace street. Interment was made in Woodland cemetery.

Mrs. Christina Anderson, 79 years, 5 months, 13 days, died at 1:35 o'clock Saturday morning at the residence, R. R. No. 3, Brandt pike. She was the widow of the late William Anderson. She leaves two grandchildren, Leo Harter and Mrs. Clara Hurleman, and one great granddaughter, Marguerite Hurleman. She had been ill six weeks.

The funeral will be held Tuesday morning at 8:30 o'clock at the residence and at 9 o'clock at Holy Rosary church. Burial will be made in Calvary cemetery.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Dundas, Ill., for Mrs. Elizabeth Anderson, 78, who died at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the residence of her son, Edward, of 206 Grosvenor av., following a brief illness. She was the widow of Miller Anderson, who died Feb. 13. Funeral services of James R. Andrews, well known resident of Dayton and Urbana, who died Friday, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at Woodland cemetery chapel. Rev. Daniel Brownlee, pastor of Memorial Presbyterian church, assisted by Rev. Charles Campbell, will officiate.

He was born on a farm in Montgomery county, about six miles from Dayton, May 25, 1836. In May, 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Alice Hagenbauch, and soon after the marriage removed to Dayton. He was associated in business for several years with Morris Woodhull, carriage manufacturer. He was deeply interested in the educational welfare of young people, and served on the board of education for 14 years. He was an active member of the Memorial Presbyterian church, serving as trustee, deacon and treasurer. In 1898, Mr. and Mrs. Andrews removed to Urbana, where they continued to reside until a natural gas explosion resulted in the death of Mrs. Andrews in the spring of 1914. Since Mr. Andrews' return to Dayton, he has lived with his sisters at 1728 Eat Third street.

FUNERAL RITES

The funeral of Mrs. Louise Angle, 75, widow of the late Peter Angle, who died at Miami Valley hospital at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon after an illness of nine weeks, will be conducted at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon at the residence of Alfred Angle, 1411 S. Wayne av. Burial will be made in Woodland cemetery. Mrs. Angle came here three years ago and has been making her home with her son. She leaves three sons and four daughters.

Funeral services for Robert H. Annegers, 61, former Dayton deputy sheriff, who died at 9:30 a.m. Friday at his home on Artz rd., R.R.3, New Carlisle, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the residence with burial in Mennonite cemetery. Rev. G. R. Jacobi will conduct the service.

The death of Mr. Al Anness at his home in Cincinnati after a short illness is announced. Mr. Anness was 22 years old and a member of the First Regiment of Hamilton, O. He was well thought of by his many friends in Dayton and Hamilton. He was born in Corinth, Grant County, Ky., where he was buried today. He was a brother of Mr. J. T. Anness, who has been with the Stoddard Bicycle Company of this place, for the past two years.

MRS. URSO APPLE TAKEN BY DEATH

CEREBRAL HEMORRHAGE FATAL TO SPRINGFIELD WOMAN AFTER VISIT HERE

Word of the death of Mrs. Maud Urso Apple, 60, who died suddenly, early Tuesday morning at her home in Springfield, was received as a shock by relatives and friends of this city.

Mrs. Apple, after spending Sunday and Memorial day with her Mother, Mrs. Charlotte Belleman, East Central avenue, this city, left here Monday evening for her home. Upon arrival there she complained of feeling ill. A cerebral hemorrhage followed, resulting in her death at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday.

Mrs. Apple was born east of Miamisburg and resided in this vicinity until her marriage to Oliver E. Apple, who died eight years ago. She was a member of the Central Methodist Episcopal church of Springfield, and was treasurer of the Frances Willard Union of the Women's Christian Temperance Union.

She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Eugene Ewell of Dayton, Miss Faith E., Miss Olive, Miss Geraldine and one son, Melvin, all at home; one grandson, Eugene Ewell of Dayton: two sisters, Mrs. Howard Rockey and Mrs. Robert Smith, of this city; two brothers, Warren Belleman and Forrest E. Belleman, of this city, and her mother, Mrs. Belleman.

Funeral service will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Central Methodist Episcopal church at Springfield with burial in Hill Grove cemetery, this city.

Mr. Nelson Apple, aged 71, died suddenly at 4:10 pm, Wednesday at his home in Farmersville. Ten years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, having been in failing health ever since.

He was a member of Enterprise Lutheran Church, and a well known tobacco merchant throughout this area, having resided in Enterprise then moving to Farmersville.

His survivors are his wife, Mrs. Eva Apple, two nieces, Mrs. Esther Schreiber, of Miamisburg and Miss Frances Apple, of Cincinnati, and a sister in law, Mrs. Romayne Apple, of St. Cloud, Florida.

Funeral services were held Sunday, at 2 pm at the Enterprise Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Norman Wegemeyer officiating. Interment was made in Twin Valley Cemetery.

OLIVER E. APPLE TAKEN BY DEATH
STROKE OF PARALYSIS PROVES FATAL TO DAYTON MAN WHO WAS WELL-KNOWN HERE.

Stricken last Friday with paralysis, Oliver E. Apple, aged 52 years, well-known here, passed away at his home at 23 North Kilmer street, Dayton, Tuesday afternoon about 4:30 o'clock.

Mr. Apple was superintendent of the Peerless Tool company in Dayton, was superintendent of the Sunday School at Epworth M. E. Church in Dayton, was a Mason and held membership in the Jr. O. U. A.M. and Modern Woodmen.

He was a son-in-law of Mrs. Charlotte Belleman, East Central avenue.

Surviving him are his widow, Urso; four daughters, Faith, Delight, Olive and Geraldine; one son, Melvin, all of Dayton. Also surviving are his mother, Mrs. Ida Apple and a brother, Joseph, also of Dayton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday evening at 8:00 o'clock at Epsworth M. E. church, corner of West Third and Kilmer streets, with Rev. H. F. Zierer, pastor, and Revs. Dunkelberger and Armstrong officiating. Burial will be in Hillgrove cemetery, this city, Friday morning. Friends may view the body at the church after Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Romayne Apple, age 84, formerly of Miamisburg, died Friday at Bethany Lutheran Village.

She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Esther) Schreiber of Berea, California, and Mrs. John (Frances) Yankosky of Napoleon, Ohio, a sister, Mrs. Onez Yarnell of Napoleon, three step-daughters, Mrs. Clarence Cotterman of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Mrs. Earl Cosner of Texas, and Mrs. Richard Blue of Cincinnati, three step-sons, Lowell Apple of Dayton, Allen Apple and Ralph Apple both of Merritt Island, Florida, 16 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

She was a member of the St. Jacobs Lutheran Church.

Services were held Tuesday morning from the Gebhart and Schmidt Funeral Home with Rev. Oliver Rajala officiating. Burial was at Hillgrove cemetery.

Mrs. Sybilla Apple [nee Belleman]

Mrs. Sybilla Apple, 80, died at 9 am Saturday at the residence, 117 Fluhart Ave. She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Albert Slonaker, two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Davis Woodman and Mrs. Albert Eagle.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 pm Tuesday at the residence and at 2:30 pm at the Zion Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Zion Cemetery.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Miamisburg for Harry Arend, 62, engineer employed at the Oakwood waterworks, who died at 6:10 a.m. Tuesday at the Miami Valley hospital. He resided at 22 Monteray av., Oakwood, and is survived by his widow, Laura; a daughter, Barbara, and several brothers and sisters. He was a former resident of Miamisburg.

Mrs. Elizabeth Arndts, 69, died Wednesday at 3:21 a. m. at St. Elizabeth hospital. She leaves three sons, William, Joseph and Theodore; four daughters, Mrs. Martha Heffner, Mrs. Regina Wick, Mrs. Christina Clark and Mrs. Elizabeth Richardson, and 22 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Saturday at the Westbrock funeral home. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery.

Services for Gerhard J. Arndts, 97, of 2708 Koehler av., will be held at 8:45 a. m. Monday at the Westbrock funeral home, 1712 Wayne av., and at a requiem high mass at 9 a. m. at Queen of Martyrs church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery and friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p. m. Sunday. Mr. Arndts died Thursday morning. He was a native of Holland and had lived in Dayton for 61 years. Survivors are three sons, Theodore L. and William G., of Dayton, and John J. of Philadelphia.

Services for Mrs. Marie Arnold, 60, of 1403 Pursell av., who died early Saturday at her residence, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Schlientz and Moore funeral home, 1632 Wayne avenue. The body of William Arnold, who died Thursday at his home, 36 Ziegler street, was sent to his former home in Hamilton for burial Sunday morning, at 8 o'clock.

FORMER DAYTONIAN DIES IN COLUMBUS

John D. Arras died Saturday morning after an illness of six months with diabetes. Mr. Arras was born in Columbus in 1852. When 11 years of age he came to this city and for ten years was employed in the postal service. Later he was engaged in the awning and tent business. Eighteen years ago he returned to Columbus and established the Columbus Tent and Awning Company, in which he continued until a year ago, when ill-health compelled his retirement.

Goodale Lodge of Masons will have charge of the funeral services Tuesday afternoon and the Scottish Rite ring ceremony will be used.

Mr. Arras leaves a widow and one son, Edmund F. Arras, and a sister, Mrs. George W. Davidson, of this city.

Death of an old Citizen

Mr. Abraham Artz died yesterday aged 87 years and 8 months. He was one of the early settlers of Dayton. He came here in 1825, and commenced housekeeping in a small one-story brick, which belonged to the late Dr. Haines, on Main st., near where Mr. Abby�s drug store now is. He married Miss Catharine Rudy in the year 1811, in Frederick county, Maryland. She died in the year 1864. Mr. Artz afterward married Miss Mattie Miller, the eldest daughter of the late Calvin Miller of this city. He was elected marshal of Dayton two terms in the early days, the late Henry Stoddard was Mayor, and also when the late Dr. Job Haines filled the same office. Mr. Artz was a shoemaker by trade. He made the first pair of peg shoes that were made in Dayton. He was well known throughout the city and country as the Auctioneer. He was a faithful member of the Reformed Church. The First Communion Services were held at his house whilst the church was building. His mother was killed by being thrown from a horse in the year 1801, in Frederick, Maryland, and in a few years afterward his father was killed in the mill he owned. Mr. Artz is the last of a large family of children. When the time came, he was ready to go and be gathered with his fathers and be a rest. He leaves a wife to mourn his departure, but what is her loss is his gain.

Mr. Thomas Ater, a resident of Dayton for over half a century, died at his residence on Wilkinson street, last evening, of paralysis. Mr. Ater was born in Fredericktown, Maryland, in June, 1799, and when about eighteen years of age came to Ohio with his father's family, who settled near Woodburn, in this county. In after years, Mr. Ater was known as a prominent drayman, carrying on that business on an extensive scale.

Two years ago, while at the Centennial, he was stricken with paralysis, from which he never fully recovered, and on last Monday week he received a second stroke, and since then has never as much as opened his eyes. The only motion perceptible about him was his right hand, which he occasionally moved slowly back and forth. He was a man of iron constitution, and held tenaciously to life.

Mr. Ater will be buried from his late residence, Wilkinson street, to-morrow afternoon.

Following an operation John B. Auer, 40 died Monday morning at 9:30 o'clock at St. Elizabeth hospital.

John B. Auer was widely known in local German circles, as well as by many residents of the southern and eastern parts of the city. He was foreman of the Newcomer bakery on the corner of Richard and Wayne avenues, for 19 years.

The deceased was born in Germany but came to this country when he was a young man. He was prominently identified with a number of organizations, including the uniform rank, No. 104, Knights of St. George, the Eagles, the American Insurance Union, the Alloa club, the Bakers' union, the Badenser society, and the Dayton Gymnastic society.

He leaves his wife, Dorothy; his son, Alvin; his mother, Mrs. J. Auer; two sisters, Mrs. H. Herst and Mrs. John Heller, and one brother, Joe Auer.

The funeral will be held Friday morning at 8:15 o'clock at her residence, 1424 McLain street, and at 9 o'clock at Holy Trinity church. Interment will be made in Calvary cemetery.

Thursday morning, at 9 o'clock, Seldon M. Averill, of consumption, at his residence, No. 212 Madriver street, aged 34 years. Funeral this afternoon at 3 o'clock, from Raper Chapel. Friends invited. Interment, Woodland.
