Surnames: BASHORE, DORMAN
Researcher: Bruce McCrea
Email: [email protected]
Date posted: Saturday, May 9, 1998

In my research on the descendants of Jacob Martin and Susannah Overholser, I could never figure out what happened to their granddaughter, Sarah (Sallie) Bashore, daughter of Benjamin S. Bashore and Susannah Martin I knew that Sarah Bashore was born Dec., 1853, in Newton Twp, Miami Co OH and married Oct. 26, 1871, in Miami Co, William R. Dorman (May 1, 1847, Miami Co OH - June 21, 1879, Miami Co OH), son of John O. Dorman and Sarah Minton. William and Sarah had two sons, John M. Dorman (March 25, 1874 - Sept. 9, 1874) and W. Edward Dorman (July, 1876 - ?). Sarah was a widow, living with her son, Edward, in the 1900 Covington, Miami Co OH, census. I could not find either Sarah or Edward in the 1910 Ohio census soundex. I had no idea what happened to her.

In a letter I received today from Phyllis Crick, she included a photocopy of part of a page from the Thursday, August 18, 1910, VERSAILLES POLICY. One item was:

"Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bashore have returned from a four months' visit in the West, spending five weeks with their daughter, Mrs. M. H. Bashore, and daughter, Miss Martha Shoe, of Missoula, Montana, and several weeks with the former's sister, Mrs. Sallie Dorman, of San Diego, California. During the four months, they visited the principal cities and places of interest in nineteen different states, traveling between 35,000 and 40,000 miles. They report an exceedingly interesting journey, giving glowing accounts of western scenery as well as of the fruits and crops.-- Covington Tribune." (I do suspect that the mileage estimate for the Bashore trip in this article added an extra zero.)

This article shows that Sarah (Sallie) Dorman had moved to San Diego and had not remarried by 1910.

Surnames: BARNEY, HELMICK, RIFFLE, STREET
Researcher: Sandi Wheelwright
Email: [email protected]
Date posted: Wednesday, May 13, 1998

I am looking for parents and other information for Deborah Riffle, born September 22, 1808 in Miami County, Ohio. Most of what I know is from family records supposedly passed down from Deborah herself. It was said that her parents were "George and Margaret" and that they were from Virginia. Deborah told a granddaughter that her parents had "abandoned" her and disappeared. She sometimes added the name Street to her name so I wondered if she had been adopted or at least taken in by a Street family. She obviously had good feelings for this family as she later named a son William Street Barney.

That was it until I found a marriage record in Randolph Co. (W)VA for a George Riffle and Margaret Helmick on December 20, 1802 and was sure these must be Deborah's parents (I have discovered that many others have made this same assumption.) I then found a listing for a marriage in 1815 in Montgomery Co., Ohio for Peggy Riffle and James M. Street. Since Margaret could be Peggy, this would explain the name "Street" in connection with Deborah. I assumed that George had died and Margaret had re-married. Then I found a family listing by Don Norman of Elyria, Ohio of the Riffle family of Randolph Co. VA which showed George Strunk Riffle marrying (1)Margaret Helmick and (2)Susannah McCalley. He noted "that Margaret apparently died young" and listed no children for that couple. George and Susannah had 3 children (from 1811-1814) and he died in 1815 in Norfolk, VA of a service related illness. This information certainly doesn't go along with my assumptions! Now I'm wondering if I have the wrong George and Margaret.

In September of 1826 Charles Barney and his family were preparing to leave their home in Wayne Township, Fayette, Ohio to settle on land in Illinois. Charles' wife had died the previous year and he had 8 children. As they were about to leave, they were approached by a young woman who wanted to go with them. This young woman was Deborah Riffle. Charles told her that it would not be proper for him to take along a young single woman but she continued to plead with them saying that she had no ties in the area. In his journal, one of the older sons said that she had formed an attachment to the family and was "of good reputation." So Charles told her the only way she could go with them was if she would marry him. She agreed and they were soon married and on their way to Illinois. So the questions . . .if she had no "ties," where had she been living? Had her parents abandoned her - or had they died? Did she have brothers and sisters? Who were her parents?

I realize this has been very long but thought I needed to get across the only parts I do have for this puzzle. I would greatly appreciate any information you might be able to share with me.

Sandi Wheelwright

I would like to know if a History of Miami County has anything to say about this man. I am several thousand miles from OH, and have not found Ohio research materials locally. If anyone can help, I would be most appreciative!
