I am looking for anyone who may be researching William K. Rodgers, who married two Moffett sisters, Catherine and Elizabeth, both daughters of the George Moffett, who along with his brother were kidnapped by Indians as young boys. The boys were captured in West Virginia, but the family all ended up in Piqua, Miami County, home to the boys while in captivity in the late 1700's. Would like to find someone who is researching either of these two families.

Hello,

I've been working on putting together an updated version of the book STEER GENEALOGY (Some Genealogy of a Steer Family) by Isaac S. Russell since about 1988.

I've recently discovered these Listserves for genealogy in various counties so I thought I'd take a shot at this in order to collect more data for my Steer Genealogy records.

Here's a brief account of the beginnings of the family:

Isaac Steer married Ruth Mercer. They came from Ireland to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania with their daughter Katherine. Three sons: Nicholas, John & Joseph preceeded them to this country. The family was affiliated with The Society of Friends (Quakers) where many continued for generations to be members.

The family eventually migrated down into Virginia settling primarily in Frederick & Loudoun Counties from which descendants spread to other areas in this country. Isaac Russell's book was printed back in 1891 so as you can see much has happened since then. His book primarily dealt with the descendants of Joseph (Isaac & Ruth's son). I am trying to gather info. on ALL of the descendants of Isaac and Ruth Steer, or at least as much as I am able to collect.

Being that the family is predominantly Quaker finding accurate info. hasn't been too difficult. I have access to the books written by William Wade Hinshaw which I am using now to further add to the Steer Family records but again much has happened since Hinshaw published his Quaker records.

This family has branched out into many different surnames as well, all which can be traced back to Isaac and Ruth Steer. Some of the more common surnames found in this family are: JACKSON, ROBINSON, BROWN, SEXTON, HOLLINGSWORTH, FENTON, DEAN, KIRK, CLEVENGER, WHITACRE, WALKER, PARKINS, MAHANEY, MARKER, SWAYNE, POPE, HOUGH, GRIFFITH, LYTLE (or LITLER), RICHIE, WICKERSHAM, WOOD, RUSSELL, NEVITT.

If you believe you are a descendant of Isaac and Ruth Steer I would like to hear from you. Could you please send me whatever complete info. you can give me on your branch of the family up to today's times plus what you know on collateral branches in your line. I need full names of individuals, birth & death dates, places of birth & death, marriage dates and places, spouses full names with birth, death dates and places as well and also the names of the spouses' parents with the mother's maiden name and the same for each child descending from the couple. If you don't have the complete info. I requested, that's ok, just give me what you can.

If you wish you can include some biography about some of the individuals.

Whatever information you can give me will be greatly appreciated as I try to put together the most up to date version of this genealogy as possible.

You can either send this to me by either e-mail at this address [email protected] or you can mail it to me at this address if you don't have an e-mail provider:

Michael L. McKay
115 Morgan St.
Winchester, VA 22601-3829

Thank you for your attention to this. I'll reprint this letter at various intervals in order for new listserve subscribers to read.

Seeking information on parents of Elizabeth THOMAS, who married John Lupt MEREDITH on Sep 16, 1816 in Champaign Co OH. John was son of John Wheeler MEREDITH and Elizabeth Busby of Casstown and was born Feb 5, 1794, probably near Romney (now West Virginia). Elizabeth Thomas was born Jun 26, 1796 somewhere in VA.

Family tradition says that Elizabeth Thomas' parents were John Thomas and Sarah Owen, but I have nothing to verify this. I had spent a few days researching in both Miami Co. and Champaign Co last summer and found between 3 and 5 different John Thomases in the Miami Valley area in that timeframe, but was not able to sort out which one was the right one. The marriage listing for John Lupt Meredith and Elizabeth Thomas indicated that the marriage was performed by John Thomas, J.P., and one of the bios in the county historical societ;y had suggested that one of the John Thomases had performed the marriage of all his daughters.

Thanks in advance for any leads that onyone can provide.

Seeking information on the Glant/Glunt name. They were in Miami, Darke, and Preble counties according to the MVGI.

Henry Glant/Glunt married Melcina McConnell in 1861. Henry was born 9 April 1833 in PA d 28 Aug, 1915 in West Milton, OH. His father is to be John Glant/Glunt and Elizabeth ??. They had a family of 13 children. Some went to northern IN, some stayed in the Miami Valley and some went ?????? I need the names of this family.

There was a Samuel P. Glant married Margaret Mote 7 Jan 1869 and had at least the following children: Jonnie Glant b 15 Dec 1871 Mi Co., OH
Lulu Maud Glant b 8 Feb 1874 Mi Co., OH
Minnie M Glant b 10 Feb 1870 Mi Co., OH

I am trying to sort some of this out for a friend and any help you can give would be appreciated. There seems to be a Mote connection as some above and others have married Motes. There is also a Niles connection as James Niles Married Charity Glant and a G. W. Niles reported the death of Henry.

Seeking others in Miami Co., OH that are researching the surname MOTE. Am hoping to find the parents of MARGARET MOTE, who married Samuel P. GLANT.

According to the 1880 W.Milton, Miami, OH census,
Samuel P. Glant is a butcher, born in Ohio
Margaret Mote is 36 yrs.(born in 1844 in Ohio)

Please look through your MOTE research to see if you possibly have a Margaret Mote, or a "daughter" born 1844. She would be 5 or 6 yrs. in the 1850 census.

Thanks for any help. Donna Glant Terrian in Orlando, FL

I am trying to find out if a marriage might have taken place between a John Steward(t) and Malinda? in Newton Twp. sometime between 1858 and 1864. On the Miami Valley Index there is a Malinda Steward marrying George McCABE in 1867 and I'm wondering if this was a 2nd marriage for her. In the estate settlement for Regina STEWARD w/o Amasa STEWARD this Malinda signs for John's part of the estate. Malinda was not a child of Amasa. I believe John was in off in the Civil War at the time. Any clues would be very much appreciated!
