Hello,
Below I have included info concerning the my ancestry. The info was handed down through a few generations. I have found spelling errors, as well as other errors. I am searching for any info that may help me in my search. Or any further corrections that I can make. I am including a lot of info as it may help narrow things down. More info is available and in more detail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank-you,
Fran GAMBLE Pugh

Samuel GAMBLE: Son of William GAMBLE, who died about 1812 at age 41.

Samuel was born at Moybrick, Co. Down, Ireland in 1771. In 1796, he married Jane POLLOCK, daughter of John POLLOCK and Sarah HARRISON at Ballasalla, Ireland.

She was born about 1781, and later came to Colbrook, N.H., and died in August, 1856 at age 75, buried in the Quaker graveyard, Winona, Columbiana Co, Ohio.

Samuel GAMBLE was a thoughtful and studious lad. His parents were urged to fit him for the Presbyterian ministry, but it happened that as he grew up, his opinions grew more liberal. Although an Ulsterman, he did not subscribe to all its tenets. He did not join the Orangemen. Although not a Catholic himself, he felt that they were sometimes unjustly proscribed and taxed to support an alien church. He read of the American growth of the democratic spirit. It was natural that America loomed up to him as a land of promise. Besides Moybrick, the family lived in Artana and Dremara. At one time, before his family grew up, he held a holding of about 12 acres, but later became more independent. His longing for America grew, and accordingly in May 1827, the little family, with their goods loaded upon carts, set out for Belfast about 30 miles away. [There is also some info that I have received concerning that Samuel was to be tried for treason so in the dark of night they got on a smuggler ship and headed for America - don't know which version is true - or if they both are]

Some of the neighbors helped them on their way. It was a noteworthy neighborhood event, a journey that most of them would have longed to undertake. At Belfast, they boarded the British brig, Diana, Alexander Melain Master. There were 250 passengers, the vessel was old and unseaworthy. It was becalmed on the banks of Newfoundland, where the water allowance was reduced to four quarts a day; but there were plenty of cod-fish, and they did not suffer for food.

They landed in Quebec, August 3, 1827, 66 days after leaving Belfast. Although urged to stay in Canada where grants of land were offered them, the family were soon on their way to New Hampshire. The place they selected was barely across the national boundary line, it was at Colbrook on the Connecticut river. Samuel Gamble's long felt hope was realized, but he had little strength or vigor to fit himself for the new frontier surroundings. His stay was short. The long felt wish that he may lay his bones in a free country was soon realized.

Samuel's children:
-Sarah- died young, leaving a daughter named Harriett to be raised by her grandparents. Harriett married an Lysander Frizzelle and lived on a farm in the Montville area.
-Sarah- second by this name
- Mary- married a Henry BELL, a captain in the British army at Waterloo, lived in Artana
- William- came to America with his parents
- Rose Ann-?
- Rose Ann- second by this name, came to America with her parents, married Daniel EVITTS
-James- Came to America and drifted away from the family, married a Miss COCHRAN of Massachusetts, had one child Mary Ann
(Barberton) cemetery.
- Ellen- Came to America, married Hosea PAUL, had 7 children
- John- Burned to death in a lime kiln when he was about 5 years old
-John- Second of this name, stayed in Ireland, blind, lived in Dublin and Newry
- Harrison- Came to America, settled in Ohio, Member of the Society of Friends, lived in Wadsworth area.
There were 12 children christened.

I know this is lengthy, but I thought the info might help someone else as well as help me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is the furthest back we have gotten with this part of the tree. I can give more info from the above mentioned until the present if need....but a lot of it is sketchy.

Thank-you,
Fran GAMBLE Pugh

Here's another tidbit on the GAMBLE family that I posted yesterday:

This is about Jane POLLOCK GAMBLE married to Samuel GAMBLE (note previous message).

This is what has been handed down in the family:

Jane GAMBLE - She has title to Paul lot on public square, Cuy Falls, and also other parcels.
She was sturdy and strong until overtaken by age. When past sixty she drove a cow from Wadsworth to Cuy Falls, staying over night at New Portage. She was a good woman, sensible and helpful.

Could someone tell me what Paul lot is or was as well as see if they have any info concerning Jane? I'd greatly appreciate any help. I do know she was buried in an unmarked Quaker grave in Winona.

Thank-you,
Fran GAMBLE Pugh

He married Charlotte E. (Noble). One daughter, Grace, born Jan. 10, 1873, married a Mr. Griswald, Elyria, Ohio.

Date posted: Sunday, February 28, 1999

I am researching the name John CANNON (born abt 1775? PA or Mass) who was in Medina county in 1820's and was married to Margaret, and possibly to a Jane. He remained in Medina until the 1850's and died where one of his daughters lived in Eaton co, Michigan in 1857. His son Isaac remained in Medina county, but other children went to other counties in Ohio and to Michigan, Missouri, etc. John may, or may not, be the son of Mary Butler Cannon, mentioned in the history of Portage County as settling in the Aurora woods from Blandford, Mass in 1805. She arrived with grown children John (no longer in Portage county after 1820), George (settled in Cuyahoga county), Stephen & Eli (who remained in Portage county), Amy (married Branerd Spencer & remained in Portage County) and Mary (married Josiah Starr).

Please let me know if you can help me identify this family and whether my John Cannon is the John of Mary BUTLER Cannon or not. I would appreciate any referral you can give me of places to look or persons who mail be able to help me in my search.

Thank you,
-Mrs. V.Lehman
