House
and Milk House
Many
typical Monroe County farms had a special building for handling milk. The milk house usually contained a vat with
water to cool the 10-gallon cans of warm milk.
Some milk houses would have water flowing into the vat from a nearby
spring. The milk house was where fresh
milk from the milking process was strained, the milk was cooled and the cans of
milk stored until picked up by the milk wagon or milk truck the following day.
