Barn Construction
The
construction of barns and farm buildings (sometimes including the house) took
advantage of the readily available limestone and sandstone in the area. Corners that served as the foundation for
wood construction above sometimes extended a full story to reach solid
ground. Sometimes entire walls were
laid up with stone. The photo above is
such a wall. At the top of the picture
the hand-hewn beams resting on the stone wall form the support for the barn
floor above. The large brown object in
the lower corner is a naturally occurring stone that the stone wall was built
around.
