Barn Construction

The construction of barns and farm buildings (sometimes including the house) took advantage of the readily available limestone and sandstone in the area.  Corners that served as the foundation for wood construction above sometimes extended a full story to reach solid ground.  Sometimes entire walls were laid up with stone.  The photo above is such a wall.  At the top of the picture the hand-hewn beams resting on the stone wall form the support for the barn floor above.  The large brown object in the lower corner is a naturally occurring stone that the stone wall was built around.
