Licking County State Winner
Melinda Greenwald, Licking County 4-H member, was selected as the Clock Trophy winner in first-year class for Family History Treasure Hunt (4-H genealogy project) July 29, 2010. She was among the 80 youth from across the state that participated in the 4-H event at the State Fair. The state awards are sponsored by OGS and Franklin County Genealogical and Historical Society. The State Fair competition recognizes the top 20% of the participants with an "Outstanding of the Day" ribbon. The top participant in three classes -- first year, second year, and third year & beyond -- receive the clock trophy.
Family History Treasuer Hunt outlines the steps to begin family history and leads search to local resources and encourages intergenerational discussions. Melinda spent time at the Licking County Genealogical Society Library for help with her 4-H project and quized her grandmother about photos, mementos, and clippings.
Ella Mae Bard, LCGS member and Publications Chair, serves as 4-H Assistant Superintendent--Genealogy for the State Fair. She was also on the writing team for the 4-H project book and oversaw the revisions.

News Release –– For Immediate Use April 8, 2009
Licking County Courthouse Lighting Committee
Winner of the Courthouse Christmas Lighting Photo Contest Announced

The judging is complete and it was Newark resident Ronna Eyman Eagle
submitting the winning entry in the 2008/2009
Christmas Courthouse Lighting Photo Contest.

According to Courthouse Lighting Committee President Jay Barker,
“the winning photo will be featured on a new Christmas Courthouse
community postcard, and will be featured on the
www.courthouselighting.com official website.
Regarding the winner Barker says, “Ronna Eyman Eagle
is a Licking County native and current Newark resident.
Her hobbies include photography, genealogy & computers.
Eagle is Genealogy Education Chairman for
Licking County Genealogical Society.
Her classes are taught from fall to spring at the Genealogy Library
downtown and at other locations on request.”

He adds, “Eagle’s photographs of the Licking County Courthouse
have been shared since mid-1980 with friends and family; first as
Christmas greeting cards; more recently via internet to the
many individuals nationwide with early Licking County, Ohio roots.

Eagle shot the winning courthouse photo in early December 2008,
the only weekend before Christmas with recorded measurable snowfall.
She says, “The winning photo was taken in the early evening
and most area photographers agree the best time for these
photographs would be between 5:00 and 6:00pm, and on weekend evenings
when there are no cars parked on the Courthouse square.
To get the best quality, no flash has been used, giving a more
natural lighting of the courthouse silhouette with the night sky behind.”

Barker says, “The winning photo is dramatic as it captures the
color and excitement of the holiday Courthouse, accented by a
dark blue sky featuring dark snow clouds on the horizon.
The new Courthouse postcards will debut later this year.”
