Hello everyone! I'm a recent addition to the list and have been very interested in all the activity. I need some help in finding my ggfather's line. He was born in Knox County in 1837. Family lore has it that he was an orphan, so my question is - was it common to adopt a child and give him a new surname, or were these children raised with their family name. Second question, he was married in Oak Hill, OH. Does anyone know the county in which Oak Hill was located (it may also have been called Portland Village & if it was, it may have been located in Jackson County). I have in his own handwriting that the ceremony was performed by a J.P. named J. E. Jones, if that is at all helpful to anyone. Thanks.

I am searching for any information on the PORTER family of Knox County. I understand from my cousin that when the PORTER family first came to KNO county that they were of the Catholic faith and after some happenings in the church they decided to change religion. I am interested in finding some info about what records are available in Knox County for the Catholic faith. I believe they attended a church around Danville. Does anyone know if there are any researchable records for that church. The PORTER family that I am looking for in Knox County is my fathers family. My grandfather's name was Charles William PORTER who died in 1947 and his father was John Hiram PORTER who died in 1911 and was married to Lidey Ann Smith. I can remember going to a reunion when I was a child at the Smith farm but have since lost contact with any of them. Anyone with any info please contact me. John Hiram's father was Thomas J PORTER and he died in 1866 and was married to Effie Stull. I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching these families or anyone who knows where to find info in the catholic church.
