Hi - I've researched a zillion family names in Knox County, but the one line I can't sort out yet is my Hall/ McClain line. I'm wondering if anyone else has already done this research-- so I can be a lazy genealogist and learn from someone else. Here's the story-

My great great grandmother was Alpha (Hall) Kerr aka "Mama Kerr". Alpha Hall was born to Jehu Hall and Pheobe McClain about 1859. This was her father's second marriage. He married his first wife, Harriet McClain, in 1847. She died in 1851. They had one son listed on the census, James Hall. He disappears from records after Harriet McClain Hall's death.

Jehu Hall then married Pheobe Ann McClain in 1851 and had children in 1854 and 1859. Jehu Hall died in 1865. One source (Past and Present of Knox County Ohio by Albert B. Williams Volume 2, 1912. Biography of Scott D. Kerr, pg 685-687) lists Jehu Hall's parents as Elijah and Matilda Hall of Knox County.

Alpha's mother, Pheobe McClain Hall, remarried a widower named Daniel Hoffhines, a lawyer in Knox County. He brought to the marriage, his children by his late wife. Daniel Hoffhines and Pheobe McClain Hall Hoffhines had at least one child-- Minnie, in 1868. So, Alpha apparently grew up in a "his, mine, and ours" type family.

My questions--
1. Whatever happened to James Hall, son of Jehu and Harriet McClain Hall?
2. Were Harriet McClain and Pheobe McClain related? How?
3. Elijah and Matilda Hall: Where did they come from and where did they go? (Can't find them anywhere!) What is Matilda's maiden name?

Thanks! Dianne Esplin

I would appreciate help in identifying the date, place of death, and burial location for my ggg grandmother, Susannah HYATT. She was born in Virginia about 1792 and moved to Ohio, possibly Knox, Delaware, Coshocton, or Muskingum County, about 1816 (her first son was born in VA in 1815 and her second son was born in Ohio. The only record I have of her is in the 1850 census where she was widowed and living with her two sons in Brown Township, Knox County. She does not show up on the 1860 census as living with either son. I am assuming she died in the 1850s. I have no knowledge of her husband, except I have identified a Susannah PICKET m. William Hyatt in Brooke County WV, in 1814. Many members of this Brooke County HYATT family moved to Muskingum in 1816. Any help would be appreciated. I have exhausted local county lookup assistance and was hoping you could find death records at the state level in the early 1850s. Thanks, Phil Hyatt, Knoxville, TN

In order for you mail to reach me and not go into some black hole, send your mail directly to Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman at [email protected] instead. Please be sure to put Knox County in the Subject as I have several counties that I take care of and not knowing the county will delay your posting going up on the page. If in doubt send mail to Maggie Stewart-Zimmerman at [email protected].
