John Miller

John Miller, the subject of this sketch, was born in Hinsdale, N. H., the 26th of March, 1822.  Came to Norwalk, Ohio in 1825 with his parents, via Albany, taking the canal to Buffalo and by the lake to Sandusky (then called Portland).  The journey occupied 3 weeks.

In 1839 his parents removed to New London, O., and settled on land, which was purchased of the heirs of Douglas suffers from the burning of New London, Conn.  He lived in New London with his parents when in May,1850, he was married to Miss Nancy B. Miller, settled on a farm adjoining the old homestead, where they lived until the fall of 1862, when they moved to Norwalk and settled on property formerly owned by Mr. Husted, on East Main street.  He was engaged for a number of years in the hardware business with Mr. David Higgins.

In the fall of 1872 he removed to Toledo, where he engaged in the real estate business.  Here he lived until his death which occurred July 29th, 1885.  His remains were brought to Norwalk and deposited in the city vault.

He had been a great sufferer from rheumatism from boyhood, but for the last three years he had to occupy a wheel chair.  He was a noble example of patience and as the Toledo Post expressed it, “To know him was but to add one more to the lists of friends.”

We have known Mr. Miller for over 25 years and never heard a word derogatory of his character.
