Some History of Locust Grove Church

In a log church on land given by Elizabeth and Eli Hill, Locust Grove Society was organized.  This was the first church built in Jackson Township.  It was 30 by 40 feet and cost $400.00 to build.  The first sermon was preached by Rev. N. Redfern in 1845.  The log church stood until 1860, when it was torn down and the present frame building erected.  It was placed on the same foundation.

In the winter of 1845, the first revival was held.  A Rev. Tibbets was the Evangelist.

In 1864, the building of the present church was begun.  The church was built by Blackstone and Wallace Newton.  The carpenter work was a work of art.  The roof trusses are 8" by 8" and they are dovetailed in.  The cross beams are 8" by 8" and they are fastened together by wooden pins.  No nails were used.  It is believed to be the only building in Vinton County to be constructed this way.  In 1865, the completed church was dedicated by Rev. Ferris of McArthur.  In the directory of the church of 1891, there was a membership of 72 with 17 on probation.  When you joined the church, you were put on probation for one year until you became a full member.

The metal ceiling of the church was installed in 1923, by Roy Rinehart and his father, Enson.  The steeple was put up in 1930.  At that time, there were two front doors and two aisles, as the men sat on one side and the women on the other.  There was a chimney in the center of the church, which was heated by a wood burning stove.  Later on, gas was used for both heat and light.

The church was remodeled in the 1940's and in the 1970's, when two classrooms and the vestibule was built.  In the 80's, the fellowship hall was built on land donated by Shag and Helen Fout.  The trustees at that time were Edsel Minton, Jack Coleman, Paul Weaver and Frank Frizzell.  The top of the building was unfinished and the kitchen and fellowship room were in the basement.

In 2007-2008, under the Pastorate of Dan Smith, the church was remodeled extensively, adding central air and heat, bathrooms, and finishing the fellowship hall.  A well was also drilled.

The recorded Pastors are Rev. Smith, Harlan, Milhoun, Ellsie, Chesser, Buell, Harris, Rollins, Thomas, Hilt, Searles, Wendell Combs, Frank Frazier, Jesse McGrady, Robert McManaway (16 yrs.), Dan Smith and the present Pastor Bill Barnett.

Reunion of Descendants of Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio

The Fourteenth Annual Reunion will be held Aug. 15, at Locust Grove Church. Sunday School and sermon in the morning. Program in the afternoon.

Executive Committee: E. W. Allen, B. O. Martin, H. C. Smith, J. W. Allison, Miles Thomas, Bundy Ringer, Wesley Harden, Clifford Fout, Clyde Pettit, Willard Minton, John North, S. F. Seitz.

President, Charles Gray; Vice President, A. G. Seitz. Secretary, Martha Smith; Cor. Secretary, Nettie Milhon.

An account of the meeting when they organized was copied from the Memoirs of the late M. W. Coultrap: A. G. Seitz invited his relatives who are descendants of the Brewster -Seitz families of Jackson Township, Vinton County, Ohio to meet in a reunion at Mt. Olive Church, on Sept. 1st, 1923. There was a hearty response, and the meeting was a complete success.

The late Judge E. O. Pettit of Logan, Ohio, introduced a resolution: That all the pioneer families of the township and their friends meet in reunion once a year, and that the organization be known as " The Descendants of Jackson Township Pioneers",

The resolution was adopted, and the following officers elected: Albert Seitz, President, and Nettie Milhon, Secretary.

Mrs. Alice Schooley Grant of Clifton, Colorado, suggested that the day be called Pioneer Day.

Meetings have been held at Locust Grove Church for 14 years. (1937)

Much interest has always been manifested by former citizens. From the Atlantis to the Pacific, greetings come to be read at the meetings. Long trips are made by persons from all over the state, and from other states, to be in attendance. At each meeting the history of at least one family is read, and other items of historic value.

Interest in these meetings continues to grow; attendance is high, considering the war restrictions on travel. (1944)

Physicians who have lived in Jackson Township or are descendants of pioneers of the township: Dr. S. C. Teeters, Dr. Pinkney C. Bone, Dr. Lincoln Teeters, Dr. Wm. Westcoat, Dr. Ross C. Westcoat, Dr. Thos. P. Johnson, Dr. Geo. Rinehart, Dr. Frank Darby, Major Ira J. Seitz.

Citizens of Jackson Township who are ministers of the Gospel: James Milhon, Samuel J. Bishop, Jared Harvey Randall (missionary in Burma), Frank Randall, George Randall Brooks, Guy Johnson, A. R. Reed
