ADAMS, BURKHOLDER, DEVINE posted by Paul Backwell on Sunday, October 24, 1999

John Q. ADAMS. b. 1/1/1800, the first mayor of Findlay (Hancock County), Ohio, was my gggrandfather. In 1826 he married Elizabeth BURKHOLDER, my gggrandmother, in Lewistown, PA. Their only child John Quincy, was born in 1827. Elizabeth died in 1828. John then married Elizabeth Devine of Lewistown PA before 1832. Along with one son Webster b.1832, they moved to Findlay, OH about 1832 or 1833. John became the first mayor of Findlay in 1836. Their children were Webster, Elvira, Nelson E., Thomas Ewing, Sara Ann, Harriet. Henry C., Mary A. All except Webster were born in Ohio. John Quincy Jr. moved to Ohio and then Michigan after the Civil War with his ever increasing family. I am trying to determine the parents of John Sr. I am not even sure of his birthbdate (1/1/1800) but presume he came from the Lewistown PA area. According to an old family geneology he died on the Mississippi River in 1856 returning from Galveston TX. If there are any descendents of John and Elizabeth (DEVINE) with information on John ADAMS on this mail list, I would like to compare notes. I know nothing about this branch of our family. Any help would be appreciated.

SHANK posted by Margaret Ruth Shank on Sunday, October 31, 1999

I am seeking more information on a Henry SHANK Sr. who lived in Richland County and died in 1885. I have problems because Richland is part of the 1840 Census for Putnam, but the 1850 Census for Allen. I know the southern part of Allen came from Preble. Did the northern part come from Putnam? Henry SHANK Sr. was my ggg grandfather. His son, Robert Flemmin (1831/2 to 1902) my gggrandfather, and Albert Clinton 1860-1957) my ggreat grandfather. Robert and Albert died in Hancock County. I had been told that Henry's farm was a stop on the Underground Railroad to Canada. When I looked for such a farm in Hancock Cty., I couldn't find one. I am trying to get information on Henry's wife and other children in Putnam/Allen/Hancock Ctys.
