“A letter was received by O A BALLARD JP on Saturday from some person signing himself ‘Infirmary Pauper’ in which it was stated that the food received by the paupers at the infirmary was unfit to eat and accompanying the letter was a piece of meat slightly tainted as a specimen. The letter and meat were placed in possession of the County Commissioners and we understand an investigation will be made forthwith. MR CAMPBELL BYAL one of the Infirmary Directors said that he desires an investigation of affairs but from what he has himself seen is confident the charges are utterly without foundation in fact. AUGUST BAUER
1920 Union Twp pg 227, August Bauer was age 40, wife BLANCHE was 38, daughter RUTH was 13 and son CHARLES G. was 7. AUGUST died around 8-24-1959 and is buried at Clymer Cemetery. BLANCHE died around 3-26-1959 and CHARLES G is buried at Clymer Cemetery.
OTTO CHARLES BAUER
1920 Madison Twp pg 216 Otto C Bauer was 29. By 1927, Otto and wife MINNIE A. BAUER were living on Washington Ave. Otto was 36 and they had a daughter RUTH A. BAUER age 6. Otto died around 3-29-1955 and Minnie around 8-2-1997. Both are buried at Maple Grove, Findlay.
ADAM BAUMUNK
"John Adam Baumunk aged 88 years and one of the oldest residents of Arlington,, died at 10 o'clock Thursday morning after suffering for three or four years of bronchitis. He had not been bedfast, but the affliction reached the acute stage a few weeks ago, and his end was not unexpected. Mr. Baumunk was born August 3, 1822 in Hessen- Darmstadt, Germany and was united in Marriage in that country in 1843 to Miss Bertha Beach. The couple moved to this country in 1846 and lived in Hancock county for many years..."

"John Baumonk died at his residence, at noon Wednesday. The funeral occurred Thursday afternoon and the remains were interred in Maple Grove Cemetery." Weekly Jeffersonian 9-2-1897
He can be found on the 1880 census, Hancock C. Jackson Twp. pg 490b. He was listed as 66 years old and born in Hessen Germany. His
wife Barbra age 47 was also born in Hessen Germany. Their children were John age 20, Anna age 18, Date 14, Margaret nickname "Maggie" 12, Fredrick nickname
"Fredi" 10 Callie 8, Lizzy 7, and Lucy age 4. Now 2 children who were listed on the 1870 census Wyandot County Jackson twp pg 717[Did they move or did the
county lines change?] Mary and George, twins born about 1865 were no longer present on the 1880 census. I don’t find them listed as buried in Hancock C. Perhaps they are buried in Wyandot County where they lived at the time. Barbara died around 9/17/1903-10/8/1903 and is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery.
ANDREW BECK
He came to Hancock C from Fairfield C OH between 1830-1840 where he and other family members can be found in Amanda Twp in 1840 census pg 50-52. Andrew is age 60-70. He came along with his son in law JOHN FENSTEMAKER. Andrew’s wife was CATHERINE. His sons came to Hancock C first.[Andrew S Beck and his brother in law John Fenstermaker were first I believe] Other Becks noted in the 1840 census, which I have now found to be his sons are ANDREW 30-40, DANIEL 30-40, HENRY 20-30, PETER 40-50, AND JOHN 40-50. ANDREW died 7-15-1850 and is buried at Zion Bloom/St Paul’s Cemetery in Amanda Twp. According to History of Hancock C by Anonymous pub 1886, BECK family members mentioned include the “Old DANIEL BECK Farm sold to CORNELIUS CLARK in 1864.” Also mentioned was that HENRY BECK’S wife was SARAH A. ALSPACH, father DANIEL ALSPACH and that she was born in Hancock C. ANDREW S. BECK, son of the senior Andrew Beck, was said to have been a commissioner for Amanda Twp Dec 1881-Dec 1884, 1884-1887, his wife being the daughter of JOHN DIPERT AND SARAH FENSTERMAKER. He died 10-12-1887 and is buried at Zion Bloom as well. The 1850 census Amanda Twp pg 467b-468 shows the following:

According to the History of Hancock C that I found at heritagequest.com stated that Andrew S. died in Wharton, DANIEL moved to Missouri where he died, HENRY moved to Wyandot C OH and died there, PETER died in Amanda Twp, and JOHN moved to Indiana and died there after 1886. The names given for Andrew Beck senior’s daughters were MRS. JOHN FENSTEMAKER of Hancock C and MRS JACOB BACK of Wyandot C.

MARION BELL can be found on the 1880 census in Delaware Twp pg 557. He is 23 and is single so he and CARRIE haven’t married yet. He lives with his parents ALFRED AND EVALINE BELL who are age 55 and 53 , both born OH, his parents b VA, VA, her parents born PA, PA. In 1900, MARION is found 3 wd Findlay, pg 143, age 44, B Nov 1856 and living with his second wife SARA who is 29, b June 1870 They have been married 9 years and had a son FRANK who was 7, b May 1893. That made the child EVA who was born July 1886 the daughter of MARION AND CARRIE.

He is on the 1880 census, Mt Blanchard, pg 553a age 63 with Wife GIRLENDINE age 52. Son JAMES age 22 b 1858 and stepdaughter MARY COLEMAN age 24.
JAMES THOMAS BELL AND CELESTIA C. VERMILLION
James was born 1873 and died abt 4-1-1943 and is buried in Hassan Cemetery, Van Buren Twp. Their children are TERRY C. b 1907 died 2-24-1996, MAURICE L. born 10-22-1907 Orange Twp & died 8-6-1991,HELEN born 1910 & died before 1998, HAROLD T. born 9-9-1914 in Orange Twp & died 7-12-1998, and VIRGINIA M. born 1919 & died after 1998. James and Celesta can be found on the 1910 and 1920 Hancock County census, Orange Twp pages 255a and 234a respectively. Now Maurice married KATHRYN J. STRATTON on 5-8-1930 [she was born 10-26-1910 Richland Twp. Allen County to ORTON L. and AMELIA ARRAS STRATTON & died 8-24-1982]. Harold married DOROTHY P. EDINGER on 4-12-1941 [she died: 10-5-2003. She had a sister BETTY EDINGER who married WESLEY SOMMERS, Bluffton] Terry married MARIETTA PENDLETON. Virginia married JESSE MONTGOMERY, Rawson. Helen married a MONTGOMERY.
According to his obituary, He was born 1-18-1873 in Union Twp to William R. and Nancy Coulter Bell. His siblings were listed as Mrs. Anna Kootz and Mrs. Anna Stratton, both of Bluffton, and a brother, Orton of Sycamore, Ill. At the time of his death, son Harold was a Staff SGT with the US Army and was stationed in North Africa.
JAMES BELL AND CAROLINE ROSE
He was born about 1839 in Ohio. His parents were born in VA. He can be found on the 1880 Census Amanda Twp pg 498b with his wife Caroline age 48[born 1832] born Ohio with her father born in MD and mother in OH. James and Caroline were married 3-20-1853 in Hancock C. The 1880 census shows their children to be Albert J. age 22, Alatha age 20, Gertrude age 15, Ella age 13, Nettie age 10, and Ida age 8.
Of note was an obituary of a James Bell who lived in Houktown in 1897. I don't know how he is related to the above 2 Bells but I will print it here just in case: " James BELL , one of the pioneers of this county, died at his home in Houcktown, Monday, after an illness of three weeks, aged about 67 years. The funeral was held this afternoon. The deceased resided in this county nearly all his life. He was a soldier in this late war. For about fifteen years
past he has run the mill at Houcktown." Weekly Jeffersonian 9-2-1897
FREDERICK BENNER
He was born 5-6-1803 and died in Amanda Twp 3-8-1867. He married CATHARINE MOYER on 4-15-1830 Pickaway C OH. She was born 5-24-1808 and died in Amanda Twp 5-24-1863. In 1830, after their marriage, they moved to Fairfield C OH, Bloom Twp [census pg 164]. They arrived in Hancock C by 1840 where they can be found on the Amanda Twp census pg 51. In 1850, they remain in Amanda Twp, census pg 473.

He was born 4-26-1829 Northampton C PA, s/o HENRY BENNER & LYDIA FALK, both b Germany. He came to Union Twp, Hancock C in 1848.

“YEATMAN BICKHAM died this morning at 9 o’clock at his home 524 North Main Street after several weeks illness. He was in his fifty second year. Mr BICKHAM came to Findlay about seventeen years ago and took an interest in the artificial gas plant in which he subsequently acquired a controlling share and conducted it for a number of years. He sold out went to Carey, where he engaged in the manufacturing business but returned here some six years ago, and has ever since resided here. He was married about the year 1875. Three years ago Mr BICKHAM was elected Justice of the Peace of this city for the term expiring in the spring. Mr BICKHAM was the only brother of COL WILLIAM D BICKHAM, the well known editor of the Dayton Journal. The latter is now sick in bed and telegraphs his inability to come. He has two sisters living in Dayton and one in Columbus. The later is now absent in Florida and her husband is confined to the house by an accident.”

ANNA BIGGS
“A severe accident happened Wednesday at the barn of MISS ANNA BIGGS near Rawson. While COCHRAN MORRISON who worked for MISS BIGGS was assisting to elevate hay in the mow with one of those patent hayforks, he being on the load, the rope caught his ankle and in throwing his left hand up to save himself from falling, he caught the rope in its descent over the pully, tearing the flesh off the ends of three fingers of his left hand which left the bones protruding. Dr HERRINGTON was called and performed a very satisfactory operation in dressing the wound. He will be laid up for a while. If the hand should heal well it will be a better hand than before the accident as he has been crippled in that member for some years- Rawson Herald” Weekly Jeffersonian Thursday 7-19-1894

“…JOHN S BISHOP went to the home of his son in law HENRY HARTMAN in Jackson township last Tuesday and was taken suddenly sick with heart trouble. He was cared for in the HARTMAN home and remained there until death relieved his suffering. ….MR BISOP was one of the leading farmers and representative citizens of Eagle township. He was born Sept 13, 1847 and spent his entire life on the farm along Eagle Creek owned by him at the time of his death. He was united in marriage April 4, 1872 with MISS ANGELINE A WOODRUFF, daughter of MR & MRS ELIJAH WOODRUFF. The wife and two daughters survive. They are MRS HENRY HARTMAN & MRS DARIUS YATES. “MR & MRS STEPHEN BOYER of Rawson were in town Friday. Mr BOYER has received the sad news that his son, RODGER A BOYER, has become insane and is confined in an asylum at Amite City LA. Rodger was well known here having made this his home until four years ago when he went south. His father is at a loss as to what course to pursue as the asylum in this state would probably refuse to admit his son, not being a citizen of the state. Eash son had a farm of eighty acres given to him be the father who took up a large tract of land. JAMES BROWN
He was born 1834 VA and married Elizabeth Morrison born OH. She was born in 1839. They can be found on the 1860 Census in Hancock County, OH Delaware twp pg 169a, near Mt. Blanchard. He and Elizabeth have a son James b. 1858. James and Elizabeth live near his mother Elizabeth Brown born 1809 [widowed]. His siblings
still at home include Elizabeth born 1838, Joseph born 1841 and John born 1848.
JAMES BROWN
According to an article in the 9-2-1897 Weekly Jeffersonian: "The only Findlayvite, so far as known, who has started for the Klondyke, is Mr. James Brown, who formerly kept a hardware store in the Traucht block. He left Findlay about the first of this month [probably August] and his wife received a letter from him, written in the
Chilcoot Pass, which he had penetrated two miles. He expects to reach Klondyke before winter sets in. Mr. Brown says he is obliged to pay $17 per hundred for the baggage he is having carried through the pass by Indians, and his food and other property will be taxed 32 percent after he reaches the mines. He speaks hopefully of the future."

“Aaron Fenton Burson, retired physician, Mt Blanchard, was born Aug 27 1812 in Loudonn County Va, son of GEORGE & SUSANNA KENT BURSON, who settled in Columbiana County, OH in 1818. They reared a family of nine children, the Doctor being their seventh child. After receiving a literary education our subject entered upon the study of medicine, in 1829, under the celebrated DR. GEORGE MCCOOK, Professor of Surgery in the University at Baltimore, MD, and father of GEN. MCCOOK. Dr Burson completed his course in the Ohio Medical College at Cincinnati and in 1832 began the practice of his chosen profession at Mt Blanchard, this county, where he has since resided. He was the first physician in Delaware Township, and also the first physician in this part of the county …” History of Hancock County by Anonymous pub. 1886
JOHN BYAL
According to the “History of Hancock County” by anonymous pub 1886, pioneer JOHN BYAL was born in Baltimore County MD on 7-25-1791 and was the second son of WILLIAM BYAL, who also came to Portage Twp. This family moved from MD to PA and then in 1809 to Stark C OH. There JOHN BYAL married ELIZABETH NEWSTUTTER in 1816. In March of 1832, they located to Section 11, Findlay Twp, south bank of the Blanchard River 2 miles NW of Findlay. He built a saw mill close to his home. They had 9 children, five living in 1886: HENRY in Findlay, WILLIAM in Iowa, CATHERINE in Kalida OH, NANCY AND RACHEL in Kansas. JOHN BYAL was Justice of the Peace April 1833. He died 7-13-1859 and his widow died 1-22-1859.

He was born 10-1-1913 in Michigan to ELMER CAIN. He married THERESA BELL DEVITO who died in 1979. He died 10-4-1981. He lived in Columbus Grove. They had 3 sons, DAVID, CLARENCE JR , both of MI, & JERRY of Gilboa. They had 3 daughters, DOLLY [married ROBERT STOVER], DONNA [married NEWTON KEZAR], CAROL [married JOHN RIDINGER] all of Columbus Grove.

He was born 12-22-1889 in Paulding C OH to David and Eliza Crane Cain. He married MARY CAIN. They had 5 sons: CLARENCE of Findlay, JOSEPH, ARTHUR, ALBERT, & RONNIE of MI. They had 1 daughter: MILDRED [ married LEWIS KIMBLE] of MI .

Weekly Jeffersonian Thursday 9-24-1896 “The death of MISS ANNA CAMERON occurred at the Home and Hospital Friday forenoon. Her residence was Eagle township and her age about 58 years. She had long suffered from an intestinal disease, and was operated upon in June. For a long time her life was despaired of.” She was the daughter of William Cameron.

“on Tuesday last week, CALVIN CANDLER, son of WILLIAM CANDLER, of Orange township, met with a painful accident while felling a tree that will disfigure him for life. He and his father were cutting down a tree and had arranged for it to fall in a certain direction. It fell the opposite way, however, and struck another tree in such a manner that the butt end of the falling tree was thrown backward striking Calvin fair on the chin. The jaw bone was broken, five teeth were knocked out and every other tooth loosened. The injury is a very serious one and causes him much pain, but he has rallied from the shock and is now on the road to recovery-Bluffton News” Weekly Jeffersonian 2-3-1893

Eight years ago MRS CHANDLER entrusted her four year old daughter to care of her grandmother at Oquawak. Last week the grandmother died and JOHN HULTZ a grocer disappeared with his family and MRS CHANDLERS daughter now twelve years old. His parents are said to be Ransom and Polly Cook. Dwight and his parents are listed as being born in Connecticut. Dwight and Elizabeth had a son
name Floyd who removed to Indiana by 1900.

physical director announced. The new secretary will assume active charges here Monday at which time Mr. COYKENDALE goes to Atlanta Ga. where he will be connected with the international committee of the YMCA Mr. RUDOLPH will take charge of the physical work at the association at Lorain O. Mr. CUNDY comes to Findlay highly recommended. He is a college graduate and only a few weeks ago returned from extended service overseas with the YMCA. Mr. THOMPSON will take active charges of classes Sept 22. Day, judge elect to the Circuit court of this circuit was born near Findlay Oh in 1840 He commenced reading law in ’58 in the office of DEPUY & EDSON at Van Wert and was graduated from law school in 1861. In July 1862, Governor TODD appointed him major of the 99th O V I In August 1879, he was elected Common Pleas judge and has since occupied this honorable position until last nominated at Lima as the Democratic candidate for Circuit Judge. He then tendered his resignation as Common Pleas judge and will enter upon his new field of labor in February next He has made a most efficient official and is personally very popular.” Weekly Jeffersonian 1-12-1893

“ Henry Deeds Sr died at his home Union twp, Friday evening at 10 o’clock from the effects of la grippe and pneumonia, aged 82 years. Funeral services will be held in Rawson Sunday at 10:30 and will be conducted by Rev ESTERBROOK. Interment in the Fleck Cemetery. Father DEEDS, as he was familiarly called was born in York County PA and moved to Fairfield county O when he was only sixteen years of age. There he was united in marriage with MISS MARGARET CRAMER. In 1833 they moved to this county and located on the farm on which he died. Eleven children were born to them, eight of whom are living. There are fifty four grand children and forty four great grand children now living. “Jeremiah Drake Jr., farmer, PO Mt Blanchard, was born 5-15-1848, in Southampton County Va. His father JEREMIAH DRAKE SR was born in Southampton County Va, October 15, 1804 of English descent; married January 5,1830. MISS PRISCILLA WILLIAMS, a native of North Carolina. They lived in Sussex County VA from 1853 to 1860, then came to Madison Township, this county, and finally settled in Delaware Township, this county in 1862. To them were born the following named children: BENJAMIN, residing in Marion County OH; JOHN W. & WILLIAM ALLEN [they were soldiers in the One Hundred and Thirty third Regiment Ohio national Guards, and died at New Creek Va.], HENRY [deceased], ELIZA [MRS PRISCILLA OSBORNE], MRS TEMPERANCE ELDERT & JEREMIAH JR. Our subject came to this county with his parents when twelve years of age. June 8 1871, he married MISS TAMSEN R. HARRIS, and to them was born one son, who died in infancy. They have adopted and reared in their family WILBERT L., son of WILLIAM WARNER, of this county. Since their marriage Mr and Mrs Drake have lived one year in Morrow County and five years in Marion County OH They purchased their present farm in Delaware Township, this county in 1883. Mr Drake devotes a great deal of attention to buying and shipping livestock. “…Declaring at 95 per cent of the factory per__, practically all of the businesses, houses and most of the citizens of Findlay were in favor of Eastern Time in the city to gain daylight after working hours. Councilman HOUCK introduced a resolution placing the city on eastern time effective at midnight Saturday evening. The resolution was passed unanimously. A petition signed by several hundred persons was presented to the council asking that this action be taken. The councilmen said that this step was in line with action taken by Fostoria, Bowling Green, Tiffin, Marion, Toledo, and other nearby cities and would make time in Findlay uniform with that of other nearby towns” Weekly Jeffersonian 4-8-1920

CHARLES ECKELS
According to ‘History of Hancock County Ohio’ by Anonymous published 1886, CHARLES was the son of WILLIAM ECKELS of Washington Twp. He settled in Cass Twp in 1833 with his wife MAGDALENE KARNS also born in Hancock C. He died before his wife who died in 1884. They had 4 sons and 2 daughters. One son was JOEL ECKELS . JOHN WELSH was listed as a brother in law to WILLIAM ECKELS and also moved to Cass Twp in 1833. He had several children including one son JOHN WELCH.
JOHN ECKELS
“John Eckels was born in Westmoreland County, Penn., April 25 1795 and in 1819 married ESTHER BOOTH. In 1836, the parents and four sons, CHARLES J., JAMES M., CYRUS L. AND WILLIAM H., emigrated from Pennsylvania and settled in Section 19, [Cass Twp] on land principally purchased of JOHN FRANKS. Three children were born after coming, and of the seven, four survive. His wife died in 1862, and the following year he married MRS. MARY MCCLINTOCK. In 1865 he removed to Findlay, where he died in fall of 1883. His widow resides with her stepson CHARLES J., in North Findlay. Mr Eckels was of Irish descent, and a man of strong will and decided opinions. He was one of the principal organizers of the Ebenezer Presbyterian Society of Cass Township, which afterward united with the Portage Society. This organization took place in a log cabin on his farm, in 1837, and he remained a Presbyterian until his removal to Findlay, when he united with the Congregationalists, and died in that faith.” History of Hancock County by Anonymous pub 1866

He was one of our early settlers. JACOB was born 1806 in Northampton [Lehigh} Pennsylvania. His parents were FREDERICK & SUSANNA RABINALT FELLER. According to “history of Hancock County” by Anonymous pub 1886, FREDERICK AND SUSANNA decided the next year, in 1807 to remove to Fairfield C OH where JACOB and siblings grew up. JACOB, along with his parents, moved to Hancock County in October of 1831. He had visited here and purchased land in November of 1829. JACOB married MARY POWELL b 1813, d/o PETER POWELL, ESQ. in August of 1830. Together they had 7 sons and 5 daughters as follows: ELI who died at a young age and definitely before 1860, JONATHON b 1839 and died in the Army, Co A 21st Reg OH Vol Infantry, SUSANNA who married SAMUEL BIGGS ESQ and she died before 1880 [They had a daughter KISSIE BIGGS who was living with JACOB & MARY in 1880, so he apparently died prior to 1880 as well], SAMUEL J. b 1833 who moved to Garden Prairie South Dakota after 1880 and died there on 3-15-1909 at age 75 [SAMUEL was a Civil War Veteran as well], PAUL b 1837, JACOB b 1856 and moved to Defiance by 1892, MARY b 1841 who married G. D. INSLEY and they moved to Wood C. OH, ENOS b 1843 and moved to Wood C OH, ELIZABETH b 1845 and married JOHN D WAGNER and moved to Frankfort Dakota, TIMOTHY b 1848 d 4-6-1920 at age 72 and was a Findlay Merchant who married DORA [DOROTHY ELIZA] VANCE , ELLA or ELMIRA b 1850 and married MARION COX of Wood C OH, SARAH ANN b 1853 who married ADAM WAGNER of Indiana. On the 1860 census there was a daughter ? ANNE K. b 1860 [8/12 mo. At the time of the census] but possibly died prior to the 1870 census, as she was not there.

Found on the 1900 [pg 69 wd6] and 1910 census [pg 51b wd2], JOHN HENRY FELLERS was born 9-13-1853 in Pennsylvania. He lived in Hancock C for 45 years prior to his death on 7-26-1941. He Married AMY ERDINE JONES d/o ABNER JONES & SUSAN WOODS in 1890. She was born 6-16-1870 in Bethesda Ohio. Children were CECIL A. FELLERS b c11-1899 & d c 11-20-1957, ELLA b c2-1894 who married LOUIS HINDERER, GEORGE DEWEY FELLERS b c8-1898, MARY MARGARITE B 4-5-1904 who married JOHN BLOCK [moving to Adrian MI], CLAYTON VERL FELLERS b c1908 d c1-21-1989 [living at Camp Butner, NC in 1943], MARTHA FELLERS died prior to 1941 as well as AUGUST LAVERNE FELLERS who also died prior to 1941 [c 8-21-1913]. JOHN HENRY FELLERS was an employee of the city of Findlay for 15 years. Both he and AMY are buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, Findlay. He had 6 siblings who preceded him in death. AMY had a brother WILLIAM G. JONES b c 9-1863. Their father was born in OH and mother in PA. She may have also had a brother ANDREW P JONES, twin to WILLIAM G. as he was also born c9-1863. AMOS M. JONES b c8-1867 may also be a brother. Her obit states she has a sister in law MRS EMMA JONES who was living in Ft Wayne Ind at the time of AMY’s death.

He was the son of JACOB FELLERS & MARY POWELL. He can be found on the census in Hancock County, living by his parents in Findlay Twp In 1870 , pg 110, Samuel is 37 and his wife NANCY D. is 33. They are found in 1880 pg 624a. Their children were DELIA 10, JANE 9, F. JACOB 3, & JASON 1 [ages per 1870] & ALVIN then was born in 1873 as he was 7 on the 1880 census.

According To the “History of Hancock County” by Anonymous pub 1886 FRANCIS W FIRMIN MD was born in Richfield Summit C OH on 7-15-1842, He descended from the Firmin Pioneers in Massachusetts. They came to America in 1630 with Gov Winthrop and followed literary and mercantile pursuits. FRANCIS descends from SOLOMON DE FIRMIN from Normandy and settled at Ipswich England in the eleventh century.

In 1827, with 3 sons and 7 daughters, they moved to Amanda Twp, SW ¼ section 17. They remained at this homestead until their deaths [1860 & 1851] By 1886 only 5 of the 10 children were still living. They were: DANIEL, LUCY , both of Findlay, JOSEPH, SARAH, both of Carey, & BETSY, living in MI. Deceased Children were listed as: PETER, POLLY who died 1-20-1875, HANNAH, SUSAN, & EVA. He was born 10-13-1799 in Lehigh C Pennsylvania [Northampton] and died 12-10-1884 in Jackson Twp, Hancock C. He is buried at Lee Cemetery. According to “The History of Hancock County” by Anonymous pub 1886, Peter grew up in OH [see Johann Henry George]. He visited Hancock County first on November 21,1823 and purchased land in sect 35 of Jackson Twp. He did not settle there permanently until his parents came in 1827. He took up 160 acres of land in Section 7 of Amanda Twp, built a cabin and made a clearing. He married MARY WOODRUFF [native of Pickaway County OH] in 1830 according to the book, however, the original marriage record that I researched, showed them as married 5-12-1831 by Aquilla Gilbert JP, with Mary’s father being present [thus she was under the age of 21 at that time]. PETER & MARY had 5 sons and 4 daughters, five children were alive in 1886, as well as the widow Mary. In the early pioneer days, PETER was known as the veteran “Land Hunter”. He was a noted guide for those looking up lands in this section of OH. He served 2 consecutive terms as commissioner for the county. The children of PETER & MARY are as follows: HANNAH 3-11-1832, HENRY 12-1833, AMANDA JANE 2-9-1836, JOHN 9-1-1838, ELIZABETH JANE 3-17-1841, NELSON FRANKLIN 3-9-1844, MARY CATHERINE 11-14-1847, ISRAEL WHEELER 12-27-1850, SARAH ELIZABETH 11-17-1854.

Possibly a brother of John, THOMAS GRIER lives nearby in 4wd, Circleville pg 190. He is 33 in 1860, wife is MARGARET age 25 and children OWEN 6, ROSEANNA 1, JANNETTE 5M born 1-1860. A sister RACHEL GRIER lives with Thomas. Now AMERICA AND JOHN had 5 children, WILLIAM born 1854, ROBERT born 1856, SARAH E. born 1857, FRANKLIN born 1859, AND JOHN M. L. born 1867. AMERICA can be found on the 1870 Census Hancock C., Amanda Twp pg 14a, age 44 born OH , widowed. Son ROBERT is 14 and is living with LEVI AND MARY J. WRENCHER, newlyweds, on their farm.

Leander Guisinger was born about 1865 in Ohio to CHARLES AND CHRISTINA GUISINGER. CHARLES was born 1818 in PA, his father born in PA and mother born in MD. CHRISTINA was born 1825 in Ohio and both of her parents were born in Germany. Charles & Christena can be found in Ohio as early as the 1860 census, where they were residing in Perry C. Ohio Somerset Twp. Pg 356a. Siblings of CHARLES include LEANDER AND LANDIN, both born in 1832 and possibly are twin brothers. LANDIN married MARGARET born 1840 in OH and they had a daughter VIOLA GUISINGER b. 7-1859. CYRUS C. GUISINGER was also a brother to CHARLES and can also be found on the 1860 census in Perry C., Reading Twp, pg 369a. His wife was MARY GLAZE and they married in 1847. Another brother to CHARLES is WILLIAM b 1827, his wife was NANCY JANE, kids were HOMER b 1870, PETER 1872, MARTHA 1874, GEORGE 1876 AND LORI 1879. [I880 Perry C., Reading Twp pg 63] WILLIAM’S daughter FLORENCE 1866 was a servant to WM SPENCER age 70 [1880 Somerset Twp pg 70b] Siblings to Charles son LEANDER include: GEORGE F. 1853, WILLIAM M. J. 1855, ANNA S. M. J. 1854, AND MATILDA 1859. Now a WFT Vol 1 tree 1391 stated that Charles father was MICHAEL JOSEPH GUISINGER 8-19-1773, died 12-23-1867 in Cumberland PA. Charles mother was ANNA SUZANNA UNKNOWN 12-20-1791, died 10-6-1864 in Cumberland PA. The family can be followed in the census years as follows:

According to ‘History of Hancock County Ohio’ by Anonymous, published 1886, John Hardy was born 7-15-1797 in Philadelphia PA. He married MARGARET ORR 8-1822 and they moved to Stark C. OH that same month. He moved to section 10 SE quarter Cass Twp on 5-31-1833, He moved to Allen Twp after 4 years and remained there until his death 10-30-1860. His wife died 1866.

MORDECAI HAMMOND
He was one of Hancock C first settlers. [ Jackson twp 1827 W ½ SE ¼ sec 35] He was born 4-27-1791 in Maryland. His family soon moved to York C PA. There he married ZILLAH GILBERT who was b 1797 in York C PA. They moved to Pickaway C OH in 1826 according to the many history books available such as the “History of Hancock County OH” by Anonymous, published 1886, and then moved to Hancock C OH after purchasing land here in June 1827. According to historians, Zillah’s brother AQUILLA GILBERT also moved to Pickaway C OH and then came to Hancock C to help his sister and MORDECAI move here. AQUILLA then decided to stay and he was one of the first Justice of the Peace for Amanda Twp. MORDECAI is said to have been the first settler in Jackson Twp. MORDECAI HAMMOND was county commissioner Dec 1829-Dec 1832. He was appointed Associate Judge in 1842, and served 7 years. He died on his “plantation” as he described it in his will on 2-25-1855. His wife ZILLAH died 2-4-1877. They had 9 children with 6 being alive in 1886, 4 of whom remained in Hancock C. According to his Last Will and Testament and Codicil 1 & 2, he names ZILLAH his wife, Sons GEORGE, JOHN T, THOMAS J., Henry and daughters HANNAH R. [who married a SHOEMAKER], MARY C. [ who married JOSEPH GEORGE], his grandchildren HENRY MISAMORE, MARY JANE MISAMORE, AND ZILLA MISAMORE who were the children of his daughter RACHAEL HAMMOND who married JOHN MISAMORE in 1835 [Hancock C Biographies in History of Hancock County, Amanda Twp by Warner & Beers pub 1886 avail at http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/oh/hancock/bios/misamore66gbs.txt ] MORDECAI can be found on the 1820 Census York C PA , Hopewell pg 69, the Hancock C tax list of 1828, the 1830 census, Jackson Twp, Hancock C OH pg 259a, 111001/021001, the 1840 census same twp, 1111101/0101001. The 1850 Census Hancock C, Jackson Twp pg 92a shows MORDECAI HAMMOND age 60, ZILLA age 52, REBECCA age 17, GEORGE age 15, JOHN T. age 15 [perhaps they were twins], and a MARY J. MCFREMONE [unsure of exact spelling] age 13 [who is she and what was her relationship to the family?] Near by was JESSE HAMMOND age 24. [Because Henry is living with him I presume him to be Thomas Jesse, being the Thomas named in Mordecai’s will], NANCY age 22, MARTHA G. age 1, HENRY age 18 [son of MORDECAI per his will and living in California at the time of Mordecai’s death as stated in his will. Henry had 2 children but they were not named in Mordecai’s will], and on pg 92 b is MORDECAI’S brother THOMAS HAMMOND age 52, b PA, ELIZABETH 34 b MD, JOHN T. age 7 [who dies on 9-28-1854], MORDECA J. age 6, EDWARD age 4. THOMAS is also on the 1840 census by MORDECAI on page 41a, MORDECAI and some of his family are buried at Krout Cemetery in Jackson Twp. Of note is that there is also a ZILLA HAMMOND buried there who died on 5-19-1853. Was she the daughter of Thomas or perhaps Jesse? JESSE HAMMOND died 8-6-1873. REBECCA may have died 10-20-1872. I can’t confirm this is Mordecai’s daughter or whether another Hammond had a daughter named this. Rebecca is not per se listed in his will but he mentions often re: his married daughters who have already received their share [of his inheritance]. It could even be that Rebecca is Hannah R Hammond Shoemaker but if so, that would mean there is one more child to be accounted for, since the historians state Zillah and he had 9 children total. All this would need to be further researched.

She was the daughter of MORDECAI HAMMOND. She was born on 9-20-1821 in York C Pennsylvania and died 8-4-1893. [burial Lee Cemetery]. She married JOSEPH GEORGE on 5-19-1839 in Hancock C OH. He was the son of JOHAN HENRY GEORGE [b Dec 1776 Northampton C PA (Lehigh)] and CATHERINE WISE [WEISS] [b 1777, married July 1797 in Northampton C PA]. JOSEPH was born in 1817 in OH and died 2-11-1889. [burial Lee Cemetery]. Their children were: HENRY A. 1841, REBECCA 4-22-1843, MORDICAI 1-15-1844, JESSE PUTMAN GEORGE, MCDONALD M., DOCTOR BENJAMIN FRANKLIN 7-23-1849, ALVARETTA, SHERMAN GILBERT, AARON, TULLA JULIA George.
JACOB HAMMON/HAMMOND
JACOB HAMMON married MARY BECK on June 14, 1840. They are not found in Hancock C in 1850. They are on the 1860 Census Logan C IL, Lincoln twp. He is age 41 [b 1819 ] in PA, Mary is 39 [b 1821] in Germany, kids ELLEN age 10 b OH, JOSEPH age 7 b OH, as well as WM. RICHARD age 17, b IND. Who is he and what is his relationship to the family? JACOB can be found on the 1870 census still in Logan C IL, Lincoln twp pg 11, He is age 50 [so his birthday is after the month of the census thru Dec] , MAGGIE 24, ETTIE C. 21, JAMES 1/12 . MARY apparently has died between 1860-1870. Is she buried in IL? Jacob’s death date is unknown. Neither of their parents can be proven. It is ruled out that he is the son of Mordecai as his will and the census of 1850 do not name him. There is the slim chance that if Rebecca is really Hannah R., then he could be and for whatever reason did not receive inheritance from his father. The other possibility is that he is the son of THOMAS HAMMOND, Mordecai’s brother. It is also possible that he was his own “pioneer” and just traveled thru this area before moving on to IL. Mary could be the daughter of the Beck families who were living in Amanda Twp, Hancock C around 1840. [They were not in Hancock C in 1830]. This needs further research. Was the Patriarch Andrew Beck born in Germany? He died prior to the 1850 census on 7-15-1850 and is buried in Zion Bloom/ St Paul’s Cemetery, Amanda Twp. He had 2 sons who could be the father, Peter b 1790-1800, or John b 1790-1800. It could be she is unrelated to any of them, but they are the only Beck Families documented during that time frame.

She is the daughter of MORDICAI HAMMOND & ZILLAH GILBERT. MARY was born on 9-20-1821 and died 8-4-1893. She is buried at Lee Cemetery. She married JOSEPH GEORGE [her married name is mentioned in Mordecai’s Will] on 5-19-1839. There children include HENRY A. [c 1841], REBECCA [4-22-1843], MORDICAI [1-15-1844], JESSE PUTMAN GEORGE, MCDONALD M., DOCTOR BENJAMIN FRANKLIN GEORGE [ 7-23-1849] , ALVARETTA, SHERMAN GILBERT GEORGE, AARON [c 1861], AND TULLA JULIA GEORGE.

“A serious accident happened in the saw mill at Houcktown Friday. J F HOUCK a man 81 years old had his leg broken just above the ankle. The particulars are about as follows: The old gentleman went into the mill to look on which was his custom most every day. After remaining awhile he started to go out just as the hands upstairs threw down a heavy slab which struck him with the above results. CHARLES F HECKERMAN
Born Sept 9 1856, Liberty Twp, he was the son of FRANK & KATHERINE LONG HECKERMAN. He married MARGARET VIRGINIA POWELL on Jan 18, 1880. She was the daughter of BATEMAN & ELIZABETH WHITEHOUSE POWELL and was born in Fairfield county April 8, 1859. The Powell family moved to Hancock C in 1860. CHARLES & MARGARET HECKERMAN had 3 children, F. GAIL HECKERMAN [who never married and lived to be 101 years of age], BLANCHE HECKERMAN, who married a KEMERER/KEMMER and lived in Benton Ridge as well,[ she died in 1985], and a Son HARRY L. HECKERMAN who died Nov 7, 1884 and is buried at Benton Ridge Cemetery, Blanchard Twp along with his parents and at least sister Gail. MARGARET died at age 74 on 10-22-1933, due to an 18 month illness from dropsy. She lived 1 mile north of Benton Ridge. She had a brother S. E. POWELL and he lived on Route 8 Findlay in 1033. CHARLES died at age 86 on August 16, 1943 at home of a stroke which he suffered from a week prior and never recovered. He was a lifelong resident of Hancock C. CHARLES had a sister MAY, who married a BIRD and was living in Los Angeles CA in 1943, as well as a sister ELIZABETH, who married a CLARK and was living in Denver CO in 1943. CHARLES had served as township trustee and was also a member or the Benton Ridge school board. Now FLORENCE GAIL HECKERMAN was born Feb 5 1892 and died at age 101 on June 14, 1993. She formerly worked at the Muir’s Drug Store in Findlay.

William Hilkert was born abt 1827 and Married ELIZABETH C. MINOR in Tuscarawa County Ohio. She can be found on 1850 census in Fairfield twp on pg 331[Book 1 of Roll 735] at home prior to their marriage in 1852. William died abt 5-29-1869 and is buried in Pleasant Twp,[McComb] at Union Cemetery there. Elizabeth can be
found on the 1870 census, widowed, with children Margaret age 16 and William A. age 9 still at home. She can still be found on the 1900 Census, Pleasant Twp pg 142b age 74 widowed, with Daughter [although she could be a daughter-in-law but it doesn’t state it that way] Ella M. Hilkert living there b June 1856 IN and granddaughter
Jennie E. HiIkert born March 1886. It states Elizabeth had 4 children, with 2 being alive in 1900. Their son Jacob removed to Indiana by 1860 and could be found in Swan Twp, Noble C. IN. His wife was Lucinda Blower and they married 2-12-1857 in Lagrange County IN. A son William age 1 was living with them. Jacob was still in
Noble C. IN in 1870 pg 305a. William and Elizabeth's son William remained or returned to Hancock C. by his death in 1935. He married Bertha and both are buried in Pleasant twp, Union Cemetery. Of interest is that He is living in St Joseph C. IN ward 7 southbend, pg 234 of the census, in 1900.
Of note is that I found reference to a Franklin Hilkert who with 2 other men, surveyed land in Noble C IN in 1870 to form the town of Swan there. No age was mentioned so was he another son of William and Elizabeth? Also several Hilkerts are buried at Knollcrest Cemetery but I do not know if they are related.

The Hollenback's were found in Hancock County at least by1870 in Blanchard Twp[pg 54], where MARGARET Hollenback, who did not marry that I know of, was residing with her sister, Mary E. Downing. In 1880, she was residing with her sister Catherine Green [WFindlay pg 596]. She was in her 50's at this time. Somehow, she ties into K. B. HOLLENBACK who was residing in Pleasant Twp [pg 268] in 1910. His wife was IRENE HILL who died in 1913 and is buried in McComb. Two of their children were sons ORIE M. who died around 11-8-1969, and ROY C. HOLLENBACK who died in 1962 and is buried in McComb. These Hollenback's tie into THOMAS HOLLENBACK who was believed to have been born about 1745 and died in 1809 in Hampshire County Virginia.

“GEORGE J HORN __?__ years one of Findlay’s ___?___tive architects died at twenty minutes past one Sunday morning at the Home and Hospital. Although he had been failing in health for several years he had been seriously ill only two weeks. He was the son of JOHN AND SUSANNAH HORN and was born is Cass Township March 4 1838. When 18 months old his parents moved to this city and he has lived here ever since. Mr HORN attended the old Union School on East Sandusky street. As a boy he showed remarkable talent in drawing and designing. During the time he worked as a carpenter he displayed unusual exactness in his measurements. He started as an architect in 1885 [?] just as the “boom” was beginning to strike Findlay. Since that time he has designed and built most of Findlay’s business blocks and many of the residences. At one time he employed more than _5 carpenters and a large office force. In 1887 alone Mr Horn designed and built more than twenty blocks in Findlay. Among the buildings which were designed by Mr Horn are WRENCH BLOCK, T B G & S power house, T B G & S ____?____ _arns, and general offices, D KIRK SONS & CO wholesale grocery house, RAWSON block, in which Mr Horn maintained his offices, GRAY & PATTERSON block, FIRST NATIONAL BANK [rebuilt] FAIR Company grand stands and stables, BUCKEYE NATIONAL BANK [rebuilt], One of his last works was the new home of the Electric Construction Motor Company which will be opened today. In 1899 [?] Mr Horn married Miss ETTA B DICKSON of Kenton, who died May 25, 1909. One daughter MRS GEORGETTA __?__ HETRICK , a brother RUFUS M ___?___ and a sister, MRS MARY C DEN__?___ SURVIVE……”

"J. H. Kennedy, veteran of the Civil War, died from complication of diseases at 1:40 o'clock Thursday afternoon at his home at 813 Wilson street after an illness of twenty years. He was 82 years old. Mr. Kennedy was a member of the 49th Ohio Volunteers and served in the Civil War for a period of 3 years and 27 days. He was the father of R.V. KENNEDY, former sheriff. Mr. Kennedy was the father of 13 children, three of whom are dead. His wife, formerly Mrs. Susan Oman, survives. Following are the children living: R.V., AND C.H. KENNEDY, MRS A.T. SPITLER, AND MELVIN KENNEDY of Findlay; MRS CLYDE RUPRICHT, eagle twp; MRS FRANK SLEMMER, Carey, MRS FRANK SMALLWOOD, Columbus; FRANK AND JOHN of Tulsa Okla., and MRS D.B. MAIL [?} of Vincennes Ind. Mr. Kennedy had lived in Hancock County the greater part of his life, having been born in Monroe county in 1837. James born 1837 was the son of ELIAS B. KENNEDY AND MARY MARGARET SALISBURY. James married SUSAN ANN OMAN in 1863 in Allen County, d/o GEORGE OMAN, and was born 1844. They can be found on the 1870 census Hancock, Union Twp pg 272, he was working at the Blacksmith shop. Kids were RICHARD VILETTA age 7, DOSHA BELL age 4, and VIOLA VASTES age 2. In 1880 he can be found pg 446 Union Twp. with additional Children ADA ELIZABETH 10, JOHN WILLIAM L. 7, CHARLES HENRY 5 , LOZETHA MATILDA 1. His father ELIAS B. AND MARY were found 1880 Orange Twp Hancock pg 522. Children include: HIRAM 15, JNO J. 11, DALY A. 9, DANIEL S 38 [PG 523 widowed, kids WILLIAM C. 19, ANDREW B. 13, CORA I. 5, ELIAS J. 3, ELMER F. 1 CLARA E. 1M.] AND SARAH 24 [PG 527] IN 1900, James and Susan remain in Union Twp. with additional children of MELVILLE [MELVIN] E. 17 born 4-1883, NETTIE ELLEN 15 born 4-1885, METTIE MAY 15 [they are twins] born 4-1885, and FRANKLIN J. 12 born 4-1888. CHARLES born 8-1875 is 24 and has been married 2 years to Rosa May Dunn who was born 9-1881. they have a daughter MAGGIE L. born 10-1898. RICHARD is married to ADELIA E. FENTON [17 years married] and they have a son at home CLEMENT J. BORN 6-1884. They reside in Orange Twp [pg 111 of census] One of their 2 children has died prior to 1900. WILLIAM son of DANIEL lives WD-2 pg 125 born 3-1862 as a porter in house of THOMAS & MOLLIE STACKHOUSE. he remains unmarried in 1900 but by 1910 [WD4 pg 114] he is 49 and divorced. JAMES AND SUSAN are still in Union Twp [pg 182] in 1910 and FRANK is still at home age 22. RICHARD & ADELIA are still in Orange Twp [pg 256] and CLEMENT age 24 is still at home. MELVIN lives in Jenera [pg 187] and is married to EMMA E. GROSSMAN [who later dies in 1916] with children ZELMA M. 4, MARIE C. 2, MARVIN E. 5M.. born 12-1909. By 1920, James has died [see obit above] and SUSAN IS 72, widowed living next door to ADAM T. AND ADA E. KENNEDY SPITLER & their daughter ANNA E. born 7-1918. CHARLES IS 44 living WD4 , RICHARD in WD 1, MELVIN 43 IN WD1 and after EMMA' s death ZELMA is 14 and living in Vanburen and MARIE is 12, and living in Orange Twp., CLEMENT J. 35 in Vanburen, [ he dies 3-31-1922].
FRANK KILLION
“Coroner J A HOWELL held an inquest over the remains of FRANK KILLION of North Baltimore, who was killed between Fostoria and Arcadia, Sunday morning by a L E & W passenger train. A number of witnesses were examined. ISAAC DONALDSON, engineer on the train was examined. He said that he was running along at forty miles an hour one and one half miles this side of Fostoria on time when he saw a man a half mile ahead on the track walking with his back to the approaching train. When the train was at a distance of 400 yards, he was still walking on the outer edge of the ties apparently unconscious of his approaching danger. The whistle was blown the bell rung, the engine reversed and the air brakes put on but still he stayed upon the track. Fireman EDWARD BROWN was looking from the window on the side KILLION was walking and said that when the engine was about to strike him he turned his head, but the fireman shut his eyes and said to DONALDSON “ My God. That is awful” The engineer jumped from the cab and ran back to where the body was lying and signaled BROWN to back the train. Together they picked the body up and laid it in the express car in which it was brought to Findlay. The coroner, after hearing all the evidence, gave a verdict that the deceased es??e to his death by accidently being hit by a locomotive while walking on the L E & W track. It appears that KILLION and his wife had not been living together for a year owing to domestic troubles. The remains were taken to Defiance for interment.” Weekly Jeffersonian 3-17-1892

MR LINAHAN, who was a glass worker, died from tuberculosis in St Joseph’s hospital. He was employed in the Dalzell Glass house while in Findlay. He went from here to San Francisco where he spent nine years, going from there to Milwaukee. He was single. He is survived by his father JAMES LINAHAN, who lives with his daughter MRS ENCK in Findlay.
