both recent & older

Please contact Linda if you have any information to add here.

Until Dec. 31, 2007, Cincinnati had 2 local newspapers, The Enquirer and the Cincinnati Post which ceased publication on Dec. 31, 2007. Since then, the Post has continued it's Northern KY edition, the KY Post.

To find obituaries & death notices:
Cincinnati.com's obituary search engine to search for online death notices and memorials.

Also see Cincinnati.com's: "Where to find Obituaries"

In addition, GenealogyBank.com (subscription website) has Obituaries from the Cincinnati Post 4/2/1990-Dec. 31, 2007 & the Cincinnati Enquirer 1/5/1999-Current.

To find publication of obituaries, death notices & articles in older editions of Local Newspapers:
The Public Library of Cincinnati & Hamilton County
800 Vine Street - Library Square
Cincinnati, Ohio 45202-2071
513-369-6900

The library's search engine to search the catalog is at the top of the main page.

See a Listing of available newspapers at the HCPL reprinted here with the Library's permission.

Newsdex (Library's searchable Index to Local Newspapers)

The Cincinnati Index includes articles & obituaries back to 194? & Death Notices since 1985, although they have recently begun indexing older death notices begininng with 1900. Before 1985, the library did not index death notices, only obituaries. If  you can not find a deceased person on the newspaper index and you are SURE of the exact date of death, the library will search the newspapers for 5 days after the date of death to look for the death notice or obit you are looking for.

Be sure to include your home mailing address. You will be billed for costs when the copies are sent. Typically this may take 5-6 weeks. I have been told that as they search for requested articles, they do try to index those found in "NEWSDEX" (Index to Local Newspapers).

See HCPL "InfoFax Service" for details on obtaining copies by fax to your home at 25¢ per page or to a Branch Library at 10¢ per page. Copies can also be mailed, check with the Library for costs.

Rootsweb's Obituary Daily Times has also been indexing Death Notices found in the Cincinnati Enquirer & Post for several years which also lists maiden names for females if listed in the paper.  You can then write to the library for copies.

You may also want to visit the Kenton Co. Public Library's Newspaper Index of the KY editions of the local papers go back to the 1880's & further with some papers.

The Ohio Historical Society has many older newspapers published in Hamilton Co. From the Online Collection Catalog, select "Newspaper Database" to search for Hamilton Co. or change from "Keyword" to  "County Search" at the top of the page to select from a list of all counties.
