LAST
WISH GRANTED WHEN HE VOTED FOR ROOSEVELT
BENJAMIN E. SMITH
When Benjamin E. Smith of
Goshen O., died Sunday night there passed away the Times-Star’s oldest
agent in point of service, in the country. Death followed a short
sickness that was not thought to be serious. Mr. Smith had not
only served the people of Goshen and the surrounding neighborhood with
their favorite paper for a half century or more, but he was also the
mailcarrier of that territory. A loyal Republican from the birth
of the party, Mr. Smith expressed the wish several months ago, when he
paid the Times-Star his last visit, that there was but one thing he
desired to do before death removed him – vote for Roosevelt. His
wish was not only granted, but he lived to hear and read praises from a
multitude of Democrats for the man he regarded as the greatest
American. In Goshen there was sincere and widespread regret at
the death of Mr. Smith, and it is likely the funeral to be from the
Methodist church of that city Wednesday, will be the largest attended
in the history of the little city. He was 75 years of age.
A widow survives him.
