"Dominicus and Mary/Polly Packer Vandyke are my gggg-grandparents, also Dee Yeager's and Steve Yeager's. We descend through their daughter Mary Ann Vandyke Cregar, then her daughter Amanda Cregar Yeager. I descend from Amanda's daughter Nellie Yeager Jordan and Dee's husband, Dan, and Steve, descend from Amanda's son George Yeager."



THE JERSEY QUILT

    My Aunt, Clara Jane Van Dyke, owned an interesting Friendship Quilt, which was always referred to as "The Jersey Quilt", probably made and embroidered just after the Civil War and inherited from her Grandmother, Mary Packer Van Dyke.  The Quilt passed to her Great Niece, Helen Morris Tripp (Mrs. Ralph Tripp). of St. Johnsbury, Vermont, who had it photographed and a print sent to me.  Embroidered on the Quilt are Twenty-six names forming a needlework census of members of the Van Dyke-Schooley-Roll families which were once, prominent in Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio and of some of their friends.

    Clara Jane Van Dyke was born 1849 in Mt. Healthy, Ohio, died in Cincinnati, Ohio, July 29, 1926, after living over sixty years in Ripley County, Indiana.  She was the daughter of Dominicus Van Dyke and Jane Hoagland Simmons, and sister of Augustus M. Van Dyke and William Mandeville Van Dyke who were prominent in the educational field in Hamilton County, Ohio and Ripley County, Indiana.

    Fourteen of the twenty-six names can be identified by family records and are designated by astericks and notes in the complete list of namesthat follows:

        5.  EMMA HILTS, b. 1847, Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio, was the daughter of Anthony Hilts, Jr., b. 1807, N.J. and his wife, Sarah, b. 1823, Ohio.  She was the first cousin to Louise Hilts, # 6.

        6.  LOUISE HILTS, b. 1847, Springdale, Hamilton County, Ohio. d. 1931, Anthony, Kansas, was the daughter of Robert Darland Hilts, b. 1816, and his wife, Mary b. 1819, Ohio.  She married Sept. 13, 1893, Charles Henry Van Dyke, b. 1847, d. Nov. 19, 1896, only son of William Van Dyke, b. 1809, Springdale, Ohio, d. March 25, 1893 and his wife Martha Sentany, b. Dec. 24, 1815, d. July 3, 1896.

       10.  AUNT KATE is Catherine Van Dyke, b. June 16, 1802, d. July 15, 1880. daughter of Dominicus Van Dyke and Mary Packer, "Mother" # 15.  She married May 19, 1821, Isaac Roll, b. May 31, 1799, d. Feb. 14, 1875.  She was "Aunt" to Fannie Van Dyke # 23 and to Alice Schooley # 19, grandmother of the present owner of the Quilt, Helen Morris Tripp.

       12.  LIBBIE LA BOYTEAUX may be the Abigail La Boyteaux, b. 1830, Ohio, who lived in the household of Dominicus Van Dyke, b. 1814, d. 1877, and his wife Jane Hoagland Simmons, b. 1820, d. 1895, appearing in the 1850 Census of Springfield Twp., Hamilton Co., Ohio.  The Latter were parents of Clara Jane Van Dyke, the former owner of the Quilt.

       15.  MOTHER is Mary Packer, b. 1784, New Jersey, came to Ohio in 1805, d. 1876, in Springdale, Hamilton Co., Ohio, at 92 years.  She married Dominicus Van Dyke, b. Feb. 17, 1782, Somerset Co., New Jersey, d. April 14, 1814, Springdale, Ohio, who was the oldest child of William Van Dyke, Revolutionary Soldier, and his wife Maria La Boyteaux, of New Jersey.  Both Mary Packer and her husband, Dominicus Van Dyke are buried in the Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Springdale, Ohio.  She was "Mother" of Catherine Van Dyke Roll the "Aunt Kate" # 10, and of Dominicus Van  Dyke b. 1814, d. 1877.  She was my great -grandmother and Helen Morris Tripp's great-great-grandmother.

       16.  ALICE ROLL, b. Jan. 1848, d. May 7, 1886, was the daughter of William C. Roll, b. April 19, 1823, d. Feb. 5, 1888, the son of Isaac Roll and his wife Catherine Van Dyke # 10.

       17.  KATE ROLL is Catherine Roll, b. Oct. 26, 1842, d. June 16, 1922, the daughter of Isaac Roll and his wife Catherine Van Dyke # 10.

       18.  LIZZIE ROLL is Elizabeth V. Roll, b. Oct. 3, 1834, d. Jan. 28, 1918, daughter of Isaac Roll and his wife Catherine Van Dyke # 10.

       19.  ALICE SCHOOLEY is Alice B. Van Dyke, b. 1846, Mt. Healthy, Ohio, d. 1877, daughter of Dominicus Van Dyke, b. 1814, d. 1877, and Jane Hoagland Simmons, b. 1820 in New Jersey, d. Jan. 17, 1895, Milan, Indiana.  She married Dec. 25, 1861, Francis N.H. Schooley, b. 1836, d. 1879; both are buried in Moores Hill, Ripley Co., Indiana.

       20.  JENNIE SCHOOLEY is Jane Schooley, b. Sept. 14, 1869, lived in 1870 in Seymour, Jackson Co., d. Feb. 16, 1927, Padlock Hills Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of Francis N.H. Schooley and Alice B. Van Dyke # 19.  She married William Edward Meyer, b. Jan. 21, 1867, d. August 15, 1926, of Cincinnati, Ohio, son of Jacob and Eliza Meyer.

       21.  LOLA SCHOOLEY is Viola Schooley, b. about 1867, d. 1924 Columbus, Ohio, daughter of Francis N.H. Schooley and Alice B. Van Dyke # 19.  She married Willis Morris b. 1836, son of John H. Morris and his wife Margaret.  Mrs. Ralph Tripp, the owner of the Quilt is Lola Schooley Morris's daughter.

       23.  FANNIE VAN DYKE is Mary Frances Van Dyke, b. July 16, 1842, Springdale, Ohio, d. Nov. 18, 1922, Cincinnati, Ohio, only daughter of William Van Dyke and his wife Martha Sentany # 24.  She married May 14, 1867, her second cousin, Henry N. Van Dyke, b. 1838, probably in Shelbyville, Shelby Co., Ky., d. Oct. 23, 1883, Cincinnati, Ohio, son of Nicholas Van Dyke.

       24.  MARTHA VAN DYKE is Martha Ann Sentany, b. Dec. 24, 1815, d. July 3, 1896, Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of A. J. Sentany who d. May 21,>1867, aged 83 yrs. 1 mo. 4 days, and his wife, Hannah b. April 10, 1793, d. April 8, 1846; both buried Old Bethel Cemetery, Bethel, Claermont Co., Ohio. Martha Ann Sentany married Oct. 29, 1834, William Van Dyke b. 1809, Springdale, Ohio, d. March 25, 1893, son of Dominicus Van Dyke and his wife, Mary Packer, # 15.

       26.  MOLLIE WILLIAMS was born April 1, 1860, d. May 19, 1933, daughter of Edwin Williams and Maranda Roll, b. Oct. 1, 1829, d. Oct. 5, 1904, who was the daughter of Isaac Roll and his wife Catherine Van Dyke># 10. She was no doubt a young child when her  name was embroidered
on the Quilt.
