Cheviot Cemetery
Cheviot Cemetery
Green Twp
Contributed by Beth Graves, March 2000

The city of Cheviot was founded in 1818 by John Craig, a native of Edinburgh, and his wife Jennet Craig.   He named it from the hills of his homeland in Scotland.  The settlement was located on the  busy highroad of Indiana, Harrison Pike.  Craig was not the first settler in Green Twp.  Pioneers from the New England States, from New York, New Jersey, Penn, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Kentucky came to make their homes here and immigrants came directly from Germany, Ireland, England, Scotland, Holland and Switzerland.  Although there are other cemeteries in the township, the Cheviot Cemetery is the largest.

[Note: At one time there were 2 cemeteries in Cheviot across the street from each other on Harrison Ave. just west of Glenmore Ave. The cemetery on the south side of Harrison Ave. was called the Township Cemetery or Green Township Cemetery  & the one on the north side was called the Bethel Baptist Cemetery. The Township Cemetery is now a parking lot and the remains were reintered at Bridgetown Protestant Cemetery. See Cheviot's Historical Societies  History of Cheviot at the City of Cheviot's website.

Hamilton County, Ohio, Burial Records: Vol. 10: Green Township by HCCOGS notes that gravestone readings for both cemeteries were combined when published in Hamilton County, Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol. II by Robert D. Craig. The transcription below as well as a second transcription called "Harrison Avenue Cemetery" that is part of the Marie Dickore Research Collection appear to be combined readings of the 2 cemeteries. Hamilton County, Ohio, Burial Records: Vol. 10 attempts to seperate the the 2 cemeteries & contains additional information than what is listed here.

Also see Bethel Baptist Cemetery for pictures of the Richardson Family Monument listed below.
