1918 THREE KILLED
Three Victims of Accident  are Perry Nofziger, Alma Grieser and  Eve Burkholder
Five Cousins Victims of Auto Accident at Archbold Sunday that Proves Fatal to Three - Perry Nofziger, Alma Grieser, Eva Burkholder.  One of: the most shocking accidents of recent years in Fulton county was that which occurred last Sunday night on the Main street crossing of the New York Central railway in Archbold. Five young people; all cousins, were returning to their homes in
a Ford automobile after having spent the day with an uncle, Mr. Peter Burkholder in Archbold. They were driving north through Archbold and at the New York Central crossing were compelled
to stop to allow an east bound freight train to pass. Witnesses state that it was between 8:30 and 9:15 when the accident occurred and the gateman was not on duty; it is also stated by some that an automobile preceded the one in which the young people were riding and crossed the tracks immediately after the freight train had passed. The auto in which the young people were riding followed the first auto, but the step on the engine of the second section of fast passenger train No. 48, west bound, caught the rear end of their auto, carrying it about 100 feet, killing
the three occupants of the rear seat and injuring the occupants of the front seat.  The dead are: Perry Nofziger, son of Mrs. Eli Nofziger, instantly killed, body badly mangled; Alma *Gireser, 22; daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Grieser, instantly killed; body,. torn and: broken; Eve Burkholder,22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Burkholder .of Pettisville, injured so badly that she was unconscious and died about, an hour after the accident occurred in the office of Dr. I. L. Coy.  The occupants of the front seat, who escaped with their lives, were: Harvey Grieser, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan *Grisier, who sustained bruises on the head. and body, but  was able to walk about, and Bertha Burkholder, 20, daughter of. Mr. and Mrs. David Burkholder, sister of Eve Burkholder, who was killed, who suffered a severe shock, but sustained no visible injuries.  The dead and injured were taken to the nearby office of Dr. I. L. Coy, from which place the dead were; taken to the undertaking rooms.  The deepest sympathy is felt by the entire countryside for the families
into which death has come in a  sudden and shocking manner.

ENGAGED COUPLE BURIED SIDE BY SIDE
Three Victims of Accident  are Perry Nofziger, Alma Grieser and  Eve Burkholder
Funeral of Three Victims of Accident  Held At Same Time and Burial In the Same Cemetery
Probably the1argest number of persons that ever attended a burial in this county assembled at
the Eckley cemetery Wednesday, April 10th, to inter the bodies of the three young people who were so suddenly snatched from life to death in the crossing accident in Archbold, Sunday evening, April 7th.  The funerals of the three victims of cruel fate were held at the three separate homes of their parents at 10:00 a.m. after which the three corteges met-at the cemetery at one time where the three bodies were viewed by all who wished; before they were laid side by side
in their final resting places.  The funeral of Perry Nofziger, 28, was held at the home of his mother Mrs. Eli Nofziger, north of Pettisville.  The funeral of Alma Grieser, 22, was held *ot the home of her parents Mr. And Mrs. Simon Grieser north of Archbold.  The funeral of Eve Burkholder, 22, was held at the home of her parents. Mr. and Mrs. Burkholder south of Pettisville.
The body of Alma Grieser presented a most pitiful appearance; more especially as the body of promised husband Perry Nofziger lay in a coffin beside her. Instead of a happy wedding the couple were dead and mourned instead of *congratnlated by their friends. Their bodies were placed in adjoining graves to be near each other in eternal repose.

By ministers of the Amish-Mennonite congregations. There are no words to convey the great sympathy which the people of this vicinity feel for the relatives and friends of the departed. The sorrows of the community are small indeed in comparison with the grief of those nearer and dearer to the loved ones that have gone before.

THREE YOUNG PEOPLE KILLED  TWO STRANGELY ESCAPED DEATH
(1918)
Five in Auto Struck By Fast Passenger Train At Archbold Main Street Crossing,
Sunday Evening -Two Killed Instantly; One Died Shortly
The dead:
PERRY NOFZIGER, 28, son of Mrs. Eli Nofziger of Archbold, Instantly killed. Body badly mangled. ALMA GRIESER, 22, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Grieser. Killed instantly. Body torn and broken.   EVE BURKHOLDER, 22, daughter Mr. and Mrs. David Burkholder of Pettisville. Injured  so badly that she was unconscious and died in the office of Dr. I. L. Coy, at 9:40. About an hour after the accident.

The injured:
HARVEY GRIESER, 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dan Grieser, bruises on head and body. Able to
walk about.   BERTHA BURKHOLDER, 20, DAUGHTER OF Mr. and Mrs. David Burkholder and sister of the dead girl, badly shocked, but with no visible injuries.

At 8:30 Sunday evening five young people were in Perry Nofziger’s Ford. They were going north and had stopped at the N. Y. C. crossing in Archbold to allow an east-bound freight to pass.
When the freight, had passed they drove across the track, in spite of the warnings of bystanders, as it was past the watch man's hours. They drove upon the other track at just the right time to be struck by the west-bound second section of fast passenger train No.43. The: locomotive struck
the rear of the auto carrying it about 100 ft., The three were crushed and. killed while the two in
the front seat escaped death. The passenger train stopped and the crew did, what they could to help.
The dead and injured were taken to the nearby office of Dr. I. L. Coy, from which place the bodies of the dead were removed and given over to the undertakers.  The cousins had been spending Sunday at the home of their uncle Mr. Peter Burkholder in Archbold They were on their way to
their homes when the accident *occured.  Upon examination of the auto in which the three in the rear seat met death on the crossing in Archbold, Sunday evening, it is easy to see that the three
in the rear seat were scooped out of the machine and carried along and crushed by the cylinder heads and wheels of the locomotive while those in the in the *seas were left in the machine because the front of the auto was stopped by the coming in contact with the shanty of the watchman.

What did you do when the darkness fell
And you knew that your day was done?
I raised my eyes to the Hills – the Hills
Where they have no need of the sun.
And what, when the last face wavered
and blurred And you stood in the night alone?
A loved Voice whispered, Whispered
my name, And a warm Hand covered  my own.
And what, when you came to the dark stream's
edge In the wake of the death bitter strife?
He carried me lovingly through
And into the land of Life.

Twilight and evening bell, And after that the dark!  And may there be no sadness of farewell, When I embark! For though from out the bourne of time and place The flood may bear me far, I hope to see my Pilot face to face When I have crossed the bar.

Twilight Prayer
Dear Shepherd, kind, who in the older day; Counted with care the flocks that reached the fold, Who saved the one that, lingering, lost the way And would have perished on the mountain cold: Hear Thou my prayer and guide my steps aright-- For I am lost in all-surrounding gloom-- Please, Gentle Shepherd, lead me to the light  And guard me safely all the way back Home. Dear Shepherd, kind, my footsteps have wandered far Away from paths the innocent have trod; My blinded eyes no longer see the light That beckons, guides, and points the way to God. Please take my hand, .lest I still further stray; Please guide my feet that they no longer roam; Forgive my sins and let me from this day Be worthy of the love that brought me home.

When morning dawned her little body was ill and by mid-afternoon she was already with her Lord.  Her cheerfulness and very promising personality will be missed by her parents; one sister-Sue Ann; her grandparents; besides many other relatives and friends.

EARLY DEATH
She passed away like morning dew Before the sun was high;
So brief her time, she scarcely knew The meaning of a sigh.
As round the rose its soft perfume, Sweet love around her floated;
Admired she grew--while mortal, doom Crept on, unfeared, unnoted.
Love was her guardian angel here, But Love to Death resigned her;
Though Love was kind, why should we fear But holy Death is kinder ?
Hartley Coleridge.

WILLIAM ORVELL TAYLOR
William Orvell Taylor, son of Orrin T. and Clarinda Peterson Taylor, was born in a log cabin he in the pioneer settlement near Winameg, Pike township, Fulton county, Ohio, May 31st, 1866.
He passed away in his sleep in his home in Archbold early Monday morning, .November 12, 1945, at the age of 79 years, 5 months and 12 days, after ailing in health for seven months. He underwent an operation May 28th and a second operation September 7th with time planned between for recuperation. He seemed to be improving and gaining in strength, able to be about his home and take walks out-of-doors. But an over- taxed heart due too chronic asthma attacks,
in addition to the extra strain from the operations, proved insurmountable.

On February 23rd, 1896, he was united in marriage to Magdalena Rupp and to this union were born , three children: Orrin R., Vincent W., and Valetta M. His devoted wife and children survive him as do six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His passing is the first break in his family circle.  When he was eight years old his father died of injuries in his saw mill. A younger brother, Frederick, died of what the pioneers called cabin fever, when a small boy. His mother died in the W. O. Taylor home in 1904. The last survivor of this family, he was preceded in death
in 1941 by his older brother, James Morrell, a railroad engineer for 50 years, who passed away in Chicago and was buried in Archbold cemetery. W. O. Taylor, when a lad of eight, moved from Winameg to Archbold with his lately widowed mother and brother James Morrell, to a property at the south edge of Archbold's corporation that was left the little family.  When 17 years of age, he had attended school as long as there were classes for him, and worked in the local stave mill until he had pay of $400 coming him. He then started the first newspaper in Archbold, the Herald, one of the pioneer newspapers of this district. He operated it seven years, then in the years of 1893
to 1904 was connected with publicity and promotion of the various World's Fairs and Expositions.  Returning to Archbold in 1905 he founded the Buckeye and continued as its active editor and publisher until his death. His family was associated with him in the business constantly, and he lived to see his publication merit many national and state awards for excellence and editorial content, and his editorials were reprinted throughout the nation.

He contributed much to the civic development and improvement of his beloved Archbold and community, believed in encouraging those who went ahead, and had great confidence in the
future of his community.  If he had an outstanding characteristic it was thankfulness. His loyalty to his principles was echoed in his family's loyalty to him, and in the steadfast confidence of his friends. Funeral services at the Grisier Funeral Home, Thursday morning, November 15th, with interment in Archbold cemetery.

HE IS JUST A WAY
I cannot say, and I will not say
That he is dead.--He is just away!
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
He has wandered into an unknown land.
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you--O you, who the wildest yearn
For the old time step and the glad  return,--
/We think of him faring on, as dear
In the love of There as the love of Here:
Think of him still as the same, I say:
He is not dead---he is just away!

IN MEMORY OF OUR FATHER

Three years today our father left us,
To return to Whence he came.
Three years we had to think and ponder,
Joy it is to bear his name.
Many years he toiled and labored
To bring to us the things of life.
Many years of joys and sorrows,
Yet ever faithful in the strife.
Many years he strove to lead us,
Holding out his helping hand,
Ever pointing us to Jesus,
To His precepts and command.
'Blest the dead who die in Jesus;
Yea; their works do follow them.
" Thru his works he still is near us,
Speaks to us, as he did then.
With the eye that is not carnal,
We can see him, standing there,
Out beyond the River Jordan,
Beckoning us for death prepare.
Heavenly Father! grant us wisdom,
And desire for Heavenly rest.
That beyond the Golden River,
We may join him with the blest.

Mrs. Cora Gearig and Family.

As a young man he accepted Christ as his Savior, united with the Mennonite Church near Archbold, O., and there continued in fellowship and service until the end. In 1910, he was
ordained to the office of deacon, which place he faithfully filled as long as health permitted. He was always greatly concerned for the present and future welfare of his family, the congregation and the church at large. His counsel and advice was sought by many and was generally profitable to those who accepted it.  Besides his local responsibilities he was active in the interests of the church at large and on a number of *accasions made extensive visits in the congregations of the U.S., and Canada. In the World War No.1 he was actively engaged in the interests of our young men of draft age, especially those who were taken into the camps. He served as treasurer of the General conference for 20 years, 15 years for the Peace Problems Committee, and 13 years for the Ohio district conference.  In all his labors he had a keen sense of responsibility, and pursued them energetically and zealously, and laid them down only when age and health demanded it. His fellowship, council and warnings will be long and favorably remembered by his family and many throughout the Church. I have fought a good fight. I have finished, my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only but unto all of them also that love His appearing.--II Tim. 4:7-.8.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Central Mennonite church, conducted by Bro. D. A. Yoder of Elkhart, Ind., and the home Ministers. Text: Rev. 2:10. Burial in Pettisville cemetery.

The call was sudden, the shock so severe,
We little thought the end so near,
And only those who have lost can tell,
The sadness of parting
Without a sweet farewell.

CARD OF THANKS
We desire to express our Sincere gratitude to all kind persons, neighbors, friends and relatives who in any way rendered sympathy and assistance in our time of sorrow.
The Family

IN MEMORY OF Ida Beck
Our loving Sister and Aunt, sadly missed since her tragic death one year ago, October 14, 1944.

We cannot say, and we will not say
That she is dead,-she is just away!
With a cheery smile, and a wave of the hand,
She left home, and entered the promised land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It must needs be, since she lingers there.
And you, O you, who the wildest yearn
For the old-time step and the glad return- -
Think of her faring on, as dear
In the love of there as the love of here!
Think of her still as .the same, I say:
She is not dead-she is just away!

One by one they are passing away
The friends we have loved since childhood's day.
We lay them gently down to rest
No more by pain or grief distressed.
One by one and our friends grow less
Their loving hands no more we press;
We have known them long so kind and true
With aching hearts we say Adieu.

That she is dead, She is just away!
With a cherry smile and a wave of the hand
She has wandered into an unknown land
And left us dreaming how very fair
It needs must be since she lingers there
And you--0h you, who the wildest yearn
For the old time step and the glad return
Thinking of her faring on as dear
In the love of There, as the love of Here
Think of her still as the same; I say
She is not dead she is just away.  -Riley.

Yea, their works do follow them.
Through His works He still is near us,
Speaks to us as He did then

With the eye that is not carnal,

Beckoning us for death prepare.

Falls Under Train Wheels trying To Return Home
Ivan Krieger, 34, was seriously injured Saturday forenoon by a freight on the New York Central, going west near Pettisville. It is believed that he boarded the train in Toledo. The injured man was taken to the Wauseon hospital where it was found necessary to amputate his left limb above the knee as well as several toes on the right foot. He also suffered many bruises.  Mr. Krieger had been in the Toledo State hospital for the past five months and had attempted to escape several times to come to his home near Pettisville. He has a wife, daughter and son, and was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Simon Krieger, both of whom died several years ago.

Miriam Frey
Truck -Car Crash Claims Girls Life  Daughter Of Harvey Frey Dies In Hospital Following Accident
Miriam, 6, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey B. Frey, died in the Wauseon hospital, Thursday, of injuries received in an automobile accident. Funeral was held at the Clinton A.M. church, Saturday. Burial in the Pettisville cemetery.

Arline Frey, 9, is still in the hospital suffering from fracture of the skull. The little boy, Merrill, *2, is
at home and seems to be recovering. Mr. Harvey B. Frey was injured about the head.
The Harvey B. Frey ford was going south at the Van Pelt corners, south of Wauseon, Wednesday afternoon. In the ford was Mr. Frey and his three children, aged *3, *7 and 6 years.
Going east at the corner was the, Lugbill stock truck loaded with steers and driven by Leon Lugbill.   The two cars came together at the corner with a terrific crash. The passenger car was thrown some ten feet and rolled. As it was of wood-frame construction, it was badly demolished, and the occupants greatly endangered.

Leon Lugbill, 16, son of. Mr. and Mrs. Eli Lugbill, .is at home and seems to be recovering nicely from his injuries.  The stock truck turned a complete sommersault and landed about forty feet from the place of impact. One steer was killed, and several injured.  Leon Lugbill, the driver of the truck, considered himself uninjured at first, but later he was taken to the hospital at Wauseon.

The Frey family recently lost a son in an accident with a horse. Both the truck and the passenger, car were completely wrecked. It is said that the corner in question was screened by trees and the drivers could not see each other approaching.

IN MEMORY

"The sun and moon are shining.
On a lone and silent grave;
Beneath lies one we dearly loved,
But whom we could not save.
“Friends may think we have forgotten
When at times they see us smile;
Little do they know the heartaches
That our smile hides all the while.”

In memory of our loving wife and mother who passed away one year ago March 1, 1936.

Leah Weber
(Aug 13, 1936)
Leah Weber, daughter of Peter and Salomey Wyse, was born on the 6th day of August, 1864, in German township, Fulton county, Ohio, where she resided all her life. She was united in marriage with John T. Weber on March 22, 1883.   Born to this union were 5 children, her first-born, Mrs. Lewis Merillat preceding her in death. This experience of sorrow she was never able to recover from. She was a dutiful wife and mother and her kind and gentle disposition won the affection of all. She yielded her will to God and strove in weak- ness to set a good example to those about
her. She departed this life August 13, 1936, at the age of 72 years and 7 days.

These remain to mourn her loss: her husband, John T. Weber; three sons: Arthur of Hudson, Michigan; Clarence of Delta, Ohio; Albert of Tedrow, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Ervin Fraker of Deerfield, Michigan; one brother, Daniel of Archbold, Ohio; one sister, Mrs. Mary Carter of
Toledo, Ohio; also 17 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. She will also be greatly missed
by many friends and relatives.

O cherished thought of heavenly rest
Where saints and angels dwell,
Where all is love and joy and peace
As they His praises tell.
With longing hearts we think of those
Who're gone before to rest,
They now have found a sweet release
In mansions of the blest.
There God shall wipe away all tears,
Clothe them in garments white.
The streets are made of purest gold,
The Lamb shall be the Light.

Card of Thanks
We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to those who kindly assisted us and for the many expressions of *smypathy.

do was rendered.   Our sympathy goes out to the bereft family. We greatly rejoice that on March 13th he made a confession and accepted Christ as his personal Savior.

He leaves to mourn a sadly bereaved wife; two sons, Harold and Wilbur; one daughter, Mrs. Marion Roth; two sisters, Mrs. Jacob Fenstermaker of Archbold, Ohio, and Mrs. Emma King of Phoenix, Arizona; one brother, David Kleck of near Ridgeville Corners, Ohio; and grandchildren: Doris Schantz, who has been living in the home since her mother's death, and Richard, Ruth
Anna, Alice Mary Roth, and Daryl Kleck; and many relatives and friends.  His daughter Inez, two grandsons, father, mother; one sister, Mary Snyder, and two brothers, Jacob and Henry,
preceded him to the Great Beyond.

"He has gone from his dear ones, his children, his wife,
Whom he willingly toiled for and loved as his life.
Oh God, how mysterious and how strange are Thy ways
To take from us this loved one in the best of his days."

When we go home, think you 'tis true
That we shall know as once we knew-
You speak with *with me and I with you-
When we go home?
When we go home I hope to see
A little face look straight at me,
Unchanged from what it used to be,

A darling voice, so low and clear,
Our hearts are thrilled to think it near,
When we go home.

LOIS LEANNA BECK
(1936)

IN MEMORY OF LOIS LEANNA BECK
Who fell asleep in Jesus one year ago today (July 1).
Two Little Feet
Two little feet went pattering by A year ago,
They wandered off to the sunny sky,
They crept not back to the love they left,
They climbed nevermore to the arms bereft--
A year ago.
“Again I shall hear those two little feet
Pattering by;
Their music a thousand times more sweet
In the sky;
I joy to think that the Father's care
Will hold them safe till I meet them there
By and by.”
By her Mother, Mrs. Joseph Beck.

IN MEMORIAM
In loving memory of our dear wife and mother, who *pasesd away one year ago, Feb. 28, 1935.

One long year ago that morning
At the break of day,
You heard the angels calling
And you silently went away.
How we miss you dearest mother
At you quietly sleep and rest,
When we think of how you suffered
Then we know that God did best.
The depth of our sorrow, we cannot tell,
In the loss of you, dear, whom we loved so well,
And while you lie in peaceful sleep
Your memories we shall always keep.
Those sad long days and dreary nights,
The saddest of all was when the soul took its flight;
We saw you sinking hour by hour,
To save you, we did all in our power.
Thou canst not come to us again,
But we shall strive to come to thee;
When God's bright day of glory breaks,
And earth night's shadows flee.
Sadly missed by Louis Merillat and Family

Sunset and evening star,
and one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar
When I put out to sea.
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and Evening bell;
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell
when I embark.
For, though from out our bourne of time and place
the flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.

Paul Hermen Frey
(Nov 8, 1934) Youth Is Killed When Dragged By Frisky Horse
Paul Hermen Frey Life When Horse Drags Lad Half Mile Through Wood Lot
Funeral services were held at the Central Amish Mennonite church, Saturday afternoon for Paul Hermen Frey, 9, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey B. Frey, who lost his life when a horse he was leading ran away and dragged him through the woods. Paul had gone to the field near the Frey home southeast of Archbold, on Thursday morning, at about 8:30, to get one of the horses to
bring up to the barn. He took with him a rope to lead the animal and although frequently warned
not to tie a rope or strap to his body or arms while leading an animal, Paul fastened one end, of the rope to his arm and the other to the horse.  Instead of attempting to bring the more tame of the two horses, Paul attempted to bring the frisky horse, the one which never before had been led to the barn.  Paul started to the barn with the horse and while leading the animal it turned and started to run, heading for the woods. Paul was dragged at the end of the rope for a half mile. The father, Harvey B. Frey, missed the lad and started searching, and found his body at the far end of the woods. He carried the injured youth to the farm home of his father, Jacob C. Frey, grandfather of the youth. Here Paul lived 20 minutes before death came. The Jacob Frey farm home was
nearest to the woods and medical aid was summoned, Mr. George McGuffin of Pettisville attending the lad. Death was due to a broken neck and the unfortunate youth was badly cut and bruised.  Citizens of the entire community were greatly shocked to learn of the untimely death of Paul Hermen Frey The youth was the eldest of family, lively, full of life and energy, and was very bright. He attended the Pettisville special school. His mother was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs, Harmon Short. Paul Hermen Frey is survived by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, grandfather Jacob C. Frey and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Harmon Short.

Paul Hermen Frey
Paul Hermen, son of Harvey B. and Bertha H. (Short) Frey, was born Feb. 28, 1925; died Nov. 8, 1934, at the age of 9 years, 8 months and 10 days. Paul was the oldest of a family of 5 children, and will be missed very much, especially because of his friendly disposition, and tragic death. Being a very willing boy to help his parent, and having an especial inclination to be among horses, he went to the field in the morning to bring the horses to the barn. He took a rope with him and put it around the horse's neck, and evidently tied the other end of the rope to his right arm, leading
the horse homeward, when suddenly the horse became fractious and dragged him to his death.

He leaves, besides his parents. two brothers and two sisters; two grandfathers and one grandmother, (J. C. Frey, and Harmon Short and wife). One great-grandfather (Chris. Beck),
and one step-great-grandmother, (Katie Burkholder). Funeral services were held at the Central church near Archbold, 0., Nov, 10th, conducted by E. L. Frey, assisted by S. D. Grieser.
