The grandson of Jacques BINDER
Jacob Bender was the fifth child of Jacob and Mary Stuckey Bender. He was born in Mulhasen, in Alsace, then a part of France, now of Germany May 11, 1826. The eldest child of the family was Catherine, afterwards married Aaron Mead. The next was Anna who became the wife of Jacob G. Wilden. The third, Barbara married Jacob Lantz. Mary, the fourth child first married Samuel Burkholder and after his death married John Leininger Sr. Sophronia, the daughter next younger than Jacob became the wife of Michael Figy. Regina, the youngest daughter married Jacob Figy, the brother of Michael Figy. On the 8th day of March 1834, Mr. Bender and family, together with Christian Lauber and Christian Rupp and their respective families, all of Alsace, in the vicinity of Mulhasen, a city about 18 miles from the northwest boundary line of Switzerland, started for America. Mr. Lauber's family consisted of his wife Magdalena (Zimmerman) and four children--- Magdalene was later the wife of John Rupp; Elizabeth, afterwards the wife of Nicholas Roth; Barbara who married Peter Short, and Christian Jr. who married Catherine Wyse, sister of John F. Wyse and Peter Wyse. Mr. Rupp's family was compose of himself and wife Christina (Stuckey) and four children----Christian Jr., who married Magdalene Roth; Anna, who married John Wyse, brother of Christian Wyse; Christina, who became the wife of Jacob King, and Magdalene, who married Moses Burkholder.
 

These three families, numbering 21 in all, started together for America. They employed three teams and wagons and drove through Harve, France in 17 days. Here they were detained some two weeks waiting for a vessel. About the 8th of April they took ship and sailed for New York, consuming about seven weeks in the voyage. The trip was long and tedious. Sometimes the ocean was perfectly smooth, no wind what ever being in motion, at which time the ship stood motionless. They reached New York the latter part of June, without a special accident or loss. Great was their joy upon first beholding the New World and especially were they impressed and delighted with the sight of the Metropolis of America, as viewed from the approaching ship. The city with its great buildings, lofty spires and long ranges of evergreen trees presented a spectacle beautiful and magnificent to behold. On their way across the ocean they were passed by a large vessel containing many emigrants from Schaffhausen, Switzerland, bound for America. Our three families remained only a short time in New York. From that city they came to Buffalo by way of Albany. From Buffalo they came on the lake to Cleveland, thence they went on the canal to the little town of Fulton in Stark County where they met Peter Schrock and a number generous Amish brethren who conveyed them to their comfortable homes in the vicinity of what is now called Marshallville, Wayne Co. Ohio. Here they remained for six weeks before moving on to Fort Wayne, Indiana and then back to Fulton Co. Ohio and settled in the area that became known as Lauber Hill.

Notes for Jacob G. Wilden
Jacob G Wilden was born about 1800 in Germany. His father may have been George Wilden who was born about 1772 in Germany.   Jacob Immigrated to America about 1821 & lived in York County, Pennsylvania. He moved to Fulton County, Ohio.  Jacob laid out the town of Burlington in 1839 and was the first merchant in the limits of German township as it is today. He erected the first store, sold the first merchandise ever retailed in the village.   Jacob  was the original mover in all the enterprise of the town; he opened a store and ran an ashery upon a large scale; built a saw-mill,  and in 1843, seeing the need of a better supply of water for his business, commenced to dig for it, but when at a depth of forty feet left the well for the night.  Before renewing their digging in the morning they tested the well by letting down a lighted candle; it went down safely until very near the bottom when the candle ignited what was supposed to be gas, but no explosion followed; the flames gradually arose in the well until near the surface when a terrible explosion took place, which was heard seven or eight miles distant. Several persons were injured, among them Mr. Wilden himself, who by the seriousness of  the accident, was obliged to retire from business. The well was allowed to fill up and was never completed for use. The emission of gas is noticeable to this time.  Burlington was laid out in a very few years after the State road was opened, and was thought to be quite an important town; but its business and population have latterly largely diminished. It now shows but little of the enterprise it had in 1850.  It has but one store, one cabinet shop, one shoe shop, and one blacksmith shop and has one school and a church.
