I descend from William R. Murphy son of Barrick

1. John1 Murphy was born Abt. 1765, and died Abt. 1819 in Fayette Co., PA. He married (1) Martha Fowler. He married (2) Johanna Creighton.

Fayette County In the State of Pennsylvania: S.S.
 

At the Registers Court held at Uniontown on the sixteenth day of June in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred twenty presents the Honorable Thomas H. Baire Esquire President and James Finley Esqr. Junior Associate Judge of said court and Alexander McClean Esquire Register on a feigned issue to try the validity of will said to be the last will and Testament of the said deceased and ordered that it be restored and recorded and registered as such. That the Letters of Administration of the goods and Chattels rights and Credits issued by the Register of said County in case of said deceased's estate to be revoked and Letters Testamentary issue(d) on the will aforesaid.

I, John Murphey of the Township of and County of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania being weak in body but of sound mind do declare that this instrument of writing which is written by my own directions is the last will and Testament revoking all others....first that my movable property shall be sold to pay my debts and if not sufficient the balance of them must be paid out of my real property. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Hannan Murphy one third of all my Real Property and also one third of all my movable property should there remain any after discharging my debts to her and her heirs forever. The remaining two thirds are to be equally divided between my son Robert Murphy, my daughter Pricilla Murphy, my son Henry Creaton Murphy and my son Adolphus Murphy. It is my wish and desire that my beloved wife Hannah Murphy shall live on my farm and have the use and benefit of it until my son Robert Murphy arrives at the age of twenty years and then that the executors which shall be herein mentioned shall sell the above mentioned Real Property to the best advantage and give to Robert Murphy and Pricilla their shares. Henry Creaton Murphy and Adolphus Murphy's shares shall remain in the hands of executors until they arrive at the age of twenty one years each and then the said two will receive their shares with the interest on the same should there be any, if not required for their support before that time....I do constitute and appoint John Bute and Robert Carter to be Executors of this my last will and Testament.....In witness of all and each of the things here contained I have set my hand and seal the eleventh day of October one thousand eight hundred and eighteen. Records in Uniontown, PA shows that Robert Carter was appointed administrator and that he withdraws his appointment in 1821. Someone (in family) stated it was because Robert and Priscilla weren't getting their share.

Orphans Court Petition, 15 September 1801, Book 1, page 40. On the petition of John Murphy, son of Robert, Franklin township, deceased, I found the names of the children of Robert Murphy. They are: John, Robert, Abner, Sampson, Benjamin, Mary wife of Silas Leonard, Sally wife of Robert Gaddis, Patience wife of James Patrick, and Rachel wife of Abner Evans.(MUR.105)
 

Orphans Court Abstracts: The third Monday in March, 1795 Jane Murphy and John Murphy, administrators of the estate of Robert Murphy, yeoman, dec'd, produced the accoune of their administration, whereby there appears to be a balance in their hands of 113 pounds, 9 shillings and 9 d half penny. Ordered by the Court that said balance (after deducting 12 shillings, the expense of this court) remain in the hands of the administrators until such time as they may be legally called upon for the same. There were 3 seperate land grands found for John Murphey, in Franklin Twp., Fayette County, at the State Archives in Harrisburg, PA. The first one, dated Aug. 31, 1796, was for 110 acres, and adjoined the lands of Samuel Stephens, Benjamin Stephens, and John Gaddis. The second one, dated Aug. 35 (sic) 1796, contained 50 acres and adjoined the lands of Benjamin Stephens and the Heirs of Robert Murphy. The third one, for 100 acres, was dated September 1, 1796 and adjoined the land of Samuel Stephens, Jeremiah Pierce, John Gaddis and others in Franklyn Township. All were signed by Thomas Mifflin, Governor of Pennsylvania. (MUR.014)

The Johanna Murphy widow and relict of John Murphy late of said County deceased respectfully presents that her said husband deceased leaving by her two children to wit. Henry F. and Adolphus Murphy both minors under the age of fourteen years; who have no guardians appointed to take care of their persons and estates. She therefore prays your honors to appoint William Henry as guardian of Adolphus and Henry F. Creighton for Henry F. Murphy, for the purpose of aforesaid; and as in duty bound, she will pray.

HISTORY OF KNOX COUNTY, page 749: Benjamin Murphy, deceased, was born in Morgan County, Virginia on the twenty-sixth day of April, 1783, and brought up in Fayette County Pennsylvania. May 2, 1808 he married Miss Johanna Lewis, born in New Jersey, April 5, 1786. They settled on a farm in Fayette County, PA, where they lived until the fall of 1823, when they moved to Knox County, Ohio, and located in Mt. Vernon, where he remained several years and then purchased and moved on a farm near Fredericktown, same county. They lived on this farm a few years, and moved back to Mt. Vernon, where his wife deceased in 1862. He died at the home of his son, Elias, two miles west of Mt. Vernon, January 18, 1867, aged eighty-four years. They reared a family of seven children, viz: Israel, born in PA, March 18, 1806; Elias, in PA, August 5, 1808; Mary, in PA, March 14, 1811; Oliver P., in PA, January 1, 1816; Martha J., in PA, March 21, 1819; Lewis S., in PA, November 1, 1821; Eliza, in Ohio, July 5 1824.

Baruch volunteered and went into service (War of 1812) as a substitute or in place of his brother Benjamin Murphey who was drafted from Fayette Co., PA. When Benjamin was drafted his wife and family were so much opposed to his going into the Army and so distressed that Baruch went in his place. He was 17 years old at time of enlistment and served as a Private with Captain John McClean's Company. THE HISTORY OF FAYETTE COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA, by Ellis, gives his date of discharge as Aug. 14, 1813 (pg. 186). PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES also confirms his service.

Notes for Catherine Guthrie:

April 5, 1880, Catherine Murphey applied for a pension based upon the military service of her husband in the War of 1812. The pension application was rejected because no record of service was found. We know today that the reason for this was she had submitted incorrect information. She thought he had served under Captain Tom Collins, when in fact he served with Captain John McClean. This is documented in the PENNSYLVANIA ARCHIVES.
 

Obituary from THE DEMOCRATIC EXPOSITION, Vol. XVI, No. 7, Wauseon, Fulton Co., Ohio, Thursday, February 13, 1890. page 3.

Mrs. Catherine Murphy, the consort of Baruch Murphy, died on the 7th at the residence of her son Perry in the northwest part of Clinton township at the very advanced age of 90 years, two months and 28 days. The funeral services were conducted at the Christian Church at Spring Hill on the 9th by Rev. Metzler, and the remains were laid away in the cemetery adjacent to the village. She was born in Virginia, Nov. 9, 1799. Her maiden name was Guthrie, and was the mother of 13 children, six of whom survive her. She was immersed by Eld. L.L.Carpenter about 26 years ago, and held her membership with the Christian church ever since. (MUR.093)

March 9, 1880 Robert Murphey testifies in an affidavit submitted for his sister-in-law, Catherine Murphey, for application of pension. The declaration in relation to Baruch Murphey as follows:
 

I know said soldier was in the War of 1812, went as a Private from Fayette Co., Pa. Think he was in Capt. Shoes Co., went to the Northern Frontier. I know said soldier was married to Catherine Murphy, was married at my fathers house, I was present at the marriage. Which I think was after he came out of the service, about one year or more. Her maiden name was Catherine Guthery, they lived together as husband and wife until his death. I was acquainted with said soldier all his life and with his said wife from two years before said marriage until the present time. Said soldier was a brother of mine. (MUR.068)

HISTORY OF KNOX COUNTY OHIO, page 749: Elias Murphy, farmer, second son of Benjamin and Johanna Murphy, was born in Fayette County, PA, August 5, 1808. He came with his parents to Knox County, Ohio, in 1823. On the twenty-ninth day of May, 1834, he married Miss Margaret Newell, who was born in Washington County, PA, on the first day of August, 1812, and was brought to Knox County, Ohio, by her parents, James and Polly Newell in 1819. Shortly after his marriage to Miss Newell he purchased and moved on the farm where they are now living, in Clinton Twp., two miles west of Mt. Vernon. He has made farming and stock raising his vocation. Their union resulted in eight children, two sons and six daughters. His son Lewis M. served in the war of 1861.

Citizen Pays the Debt of Nature, John Murphy, aged 81, a retired farmer, who resides at the corner of Marion and Cline Avenues, died yesterday afternoon at 4:30 c'clock. The cause of the old gentleman's death was a general breaking down of the system.

For many years the deceased was a farmer, and, before his removal to this city, he lived five miles southwest of this city. He leaves a wife and seven children. K.C. Murphy and Mrs. Post of Morrow county; O.P. Murphy. Mrs. Seward, Mrs. Jackson, Mrs. Lantz and Mrs. Murphy, of Richland county. Funeral services will be held from the late residence on Thursday, at 1 PM. Burial will take place at Lexington. The services will be conducted by Rev. H.L. Wiles. (MUR.096)

DEATH OF AN AGED FORMER RESIDENT from the MISHAWAKA ENTERPRISE

Mrs. Hetty Ann Murphy, who years ago was a resident of Mishawaka, died February 7, (1913) at the home of her granddaughter Mrs. George Carroll, south of Elkhart, on her 85th year. Death was due to a liver ailment.

Surviving Mrs. Murphy are, one daughter Mrs. D. S. Hoover, of Miami, FL; two brothers, William McCreary of Marshalltown, IA and George McCreary of Enid, OK. Ten grandchildren, thirty-five great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
