LYMAN O. RICE was one of the pioneers of Fulton County where he cut a road through and settled on his present farm in 1843. He was born in Oneida County, New York, December 26, 1820, and married to Susannah M., daughter of Frederick and Catharine Goll of France who was born in France, November 2, 1827. They were married in Burlington, Ohio October 4, 1846. Their children are: Almira, Arvin, Charles A., and Mary A. Elijah and Jerusha Rice, parents of Lyman were natives of Connecticut and both died in New York. Mr. Rice lost a barn, horses, wagon and grain by fire in 1860 to the amount of $1, 500; no insurance. Post-office, Fayette. Business, farmer, section 19.
JUSTUS L. HALE and his wife, M. R. (Perry) Hale were born in New York May 3, 1815 and June 23, 1818 and married at Morenci, Michigan September 27, 1866. Their children are: Charles C., Smith M., Luther J. and Justice. Smith M. was a member of the 38th Regiment, O.V.I. in the war of 1861-5 and died near Nashville, Tennessee. Luther J. belonged to the 68th Regiment O.V.I. and died near Nashville, Tennessee. The parents of this couple, Gardner and Rhoda Hale and Amos and Patience Perry were natives of New York. Mr. Hale settled in Fulton County in 1842. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock dealer and farmer, section 9.
WILLARD E. GAY, son of William and Sarah Gay of New York was born in Herkimer County, New York March 29, 1815 and settled in Fulton County in 1841, his parents having removed thither the previous year. He was married in Michigan in December 1842 to Adelia, daughter of Wandell and Sarah A. Mace, both of New York where she was born in Onondaga County December 12, 1822. The children of this couple are: Theodore, born September 3, 1851 and Estelle E., born September 7, 1858. Mr. Gay settled in Fulton County in 1841. In 1843 he suffered from fire; no insurance. He has filled the office of infirmary director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 8.
SARDIS COTTRELL,
son of Gorham and Althea Cottrell of Massachusetts was born in Hampshire
County, Massachusetts October 31, 1817 and removed with his parents to
Fulton County, Ohio in 1835 where he was married in 1841 to Ann, daughter
of Cornelius and Clarissa Willett of New York where she was born in Monroe
County June 26, 1822. They have four children: Helen C., Theoda
I., Lemuel S. and Elmer E. Mr. Cottrell has held the offices of township
treasurer, school director and supervisor. Post-office, Fayette.

GEORGE F. DUBOIS
settled in Fulton County in 1847. He is a son of Abraham and Elizabeth
Dubois of New York where he was born April 28, 1814. He was married
in Richland County, Ohio in 1834 to Amelia, daughter of Samuel and Content
Hoadley of Connecticut where she was born October 25, 1804. Their
children are: Annette A., Sophronia E., John R., Franc and Lemuel.

L. D. WILLIAMS, M.D.,
Physician and Surgeon, Fayette, Ohio.
AMOS KENDALL, M.D. and his wife, Mary (McCrilles) Kendall, were born in New York, the former in Monroe County, September 28, 1820, the latter in Onondaga County, New York November 22, 1823. They were married in Michigan October 21, 1841. Their children are: Andrew J., Louisa A., Abraham L., and Amos. The parents of this couple, John and Anna Kendall and James and Betsey McCrilles were all born in New York. Mr. Kendall has been post-master and justice of the peace sixteen years. WILLIAM KINKAID,
son of William and Elizabeth Kinkaid of Pennsylvania was born in Cumberland
County, Pennsylvania March 8, 1822 and married in the same county in 1855
to Mary Horn born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania November 5, 1830.
Their children are: Laura, born July 20, 1857; John S., born June
3, 1860; Charles H., born September 21, 1862; and William M., born August
18, 1867. Benjamin and Catharine Horn, parents of Mrs. Kinkaid, were
born, the former in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, the latter in Maryland.
Mr. Kinkaid settled in Fulton County in 1865 and has filled the offices
of supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business,
stock raiser and farmer, section 13.
HARVEY BAKER, son of Jacob and Emily Baker, the former born in New York, January 1789, the latter in Connecticut in 1794 was born in Oakland County, Michigan May 5, 1828. He was married in Fulton County, Ohio March 1856 to Nancy, daughter of P. J. and Eliza Maxim who were born in Monroe, Michigan in 1809 and 1811. Their daughter was also born in the same state and county October 23, 1832. Mr. And Mrs. Baker have a family of four children: Davis A., Lewis A., Elma J., and Agnes Belle. Mr. B. settled in the county in 1861. He has been school director and supervisor. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock dealer and farmer, sections 16 and 9.
JOHN M. HAUSE and his wife, Eliza (Heckman) Hause were born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania, Mary 21, 1819 and May 3, 1821. They were married in the same state October 5, 1840. Their family consists of three children: William, Reuben and Sarah. Reuben was a member of the 18th Michigan V.I. in the war of 1861-5 and died at a hospital in Kentucky. John and Sarah Hause, and Jacob and Christena Heckman, parents of the above, were born in Northampton County, Pennsylvania and died in Mercy County, Pennsylvania. Mr. Hause settled in Fulton County in 1854. He has held the offices of township trustee and school director. Post-office, Morenci, Michigan. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 12.
DANIEL DANIELSON, son of John and Catharine Danielson, the former born in Washington County, New York, the latter in Canada was born in Ontario County, New York June 17, 1821. His wife, Matilda, daughter of Whiting and Sarah Starkweather of New York was born in Cuyahoga County, New York October 27, 1825. They were married in Gorham Township, Fulton County in 1842. Their family is as follows: H. B., born December 4, 1843; Catharine, born March 7, 1847; Jane, born August 29, 1849; William, born August 24, 1852; Ann E., born December 18, 1855; Ella, born February 22, 1863; Maud, born October 11, 1868. Henry B. was a member of the 38th Regiment O.V.I. three years in the war of the rebellion. He was honorably discharged. Mr. D., with his parents, settled in Fulton County, Ohio in 1836. He has held the office of supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, farmer and stock raiser, section 19.
GEORGE L. AMSBAUGH settled in the woods of Fulton County in 1855. He is a son of Adam and Tenia Amsbaugh who were born, the former in Pennsylvania, the latter in Virginia both of whom are deceased. Mr. A. was born in Indiana County, Pennsylvania, October 15, 1825. He was married in Richland County, Ohio May 3, 1851 to Lavinia Hopp, daughter of Frederick and Susannah Hopp of Pennsylvania who was born in New York January 26, 1830. They have a family of five children: Rissa, Relmon D., Frances L., Cassius O., and Jennie D. Mr. A. has been supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, farmer and stock raiser, section 23.
HENRY EMERICK, son of Samuel and Mollie Emerick, who were natives of Pennsylvania was born in Seneca County, New York January 18, 1826. He was married in Gorham Township, Fulton County, Ohio April 3, 1852 to Margaret, daughter of John and Sophia Saltzberger of Pennsylvania who was born in Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, March 6, 1827. Their family is as follows: Emily A. (Mrs. Ford), Eliza A., Leroy, John H. (deceased), Clara (deceased), Clarence, Florence and Cora. Mr. E. settled in Fulton County in 1851. He has been township trustee, constable, supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 29.
WILLIAM H. CONRAD settled with his parents, John and Susan Conrad who were from New York in Fulton County, Ohio in 1844. Arriving in the county his fortune consisted of $16, a yoke of cattle and a few pounds of pork. He built a cabin 12 x 15 in which he lived the first year while he cleared and tilled sixteen acres from which he harvested 49 bushels of grain to the acre and sold it for 49 cents a bushel. He now owns and has distributed among his goys 420 acres of land. Mr. Conrad and his wife Priscilla Conrad were born in New York May 23, 1818 and January 23, 1817. They have six children living: Susan E., Henry J., Charles A., Wilbert A., Emily E., and Edna A. Five deceased: Francis, William, Allen, Florence, and Lydia. Jacob and Priscilla Conrad, parents of Mrs. C. were born, the former in Maryland, the latter in Rhode Island. They settled in Fulton County in 1849. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, lots 7 and 8, sections 17 and 29.
MARTIN BEILHARTZ and his wife, Mary Raugh, were born in Wurtemberg, Germany December 15, 1803 and February 12, 1807. They were married in the same place October 6, 1832 and emigrated to America and settled in Fulton County in 1833. Mr. B. cut the first tree on the Corners and Mrs. B. burned the stump. Mr. And Mrs. B have one daughter, Leoline, born March 3, 1844. She is married and lives in Gorham. The parents of this couple, Martin and Christena Beilhartz and C. and Catharine Raugh were all natives of Germany. Mr. B. has been supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, shoemaker, stock raiser and farmer, section 35.
JOHN JACOBY, son of John and Sallie Jacoby of Pennsylvania was born in Seneca County, New York March 5, 1822, settled in Fulton County, Ohio in 1844 and was married in Gorham Township, Fulton County in June 1846 to Nancy Severence, born in Crawford County, Ohio September 7, 1828. They have six children: Melvina, Perry, Lafayette, Fremont, Wellington and Joseph. Mr. Jacoby’s parents came into Fulton County in 1835 where his father died in 1842. Daniel and Esther Severence were born, the former in Vermont, the latter in New York. They settled in Fulton County in 1834. Mr. Jacoby was one of the first settlers there being at that time but six voters in Mill Creek Township, Williams County where he located. His farm has since been set off into Fulton County. He has cleared over 300 acres of land in Gorham Township. Post-office, Fayette. Business, farmer, section 35.
THOMAS TAYLOR and his wife Lydia Taylor were born in Burlington County, New Jersey August 11, 2839 and January, 1837. They were married in the same plate in February of 1859 and settled in Fulton County, Ohio in 1866. Their children are Lincoln, Annie and Charles. The parents of this couple, Thomas and Mary Taylor and Samuel and Nancy Small were all born in Camden County, New Jersey. The former settled in Fulton County in 1866. Mr. T. has been supervisor two years and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business stock raiser and farmer, section 35.
SOLOMON GOTSHALL, son of George and Elizabeth Gotshall, the former of Pennsylvania, the latter of Ohio was born in Richland County, Ohio February 1, 1834. He was married in Richland County, Ohio December 21, 1856 to Maria Whistler, daughter of Christian and Eliza Whistler of Pennsylvania who was born in Ashland County, Ohio September 12, 1840. Their family consists of Gandy, born October 5, 1857 (deceased); Lawrence, born May 9, 1860; Minnie, born September 27, 1862 (deceased); and Ira, born September 1, 1871. Post-office, Fayette. Business, farmer and stock raiser, section 29.
GABRIEL D. SNOW and his wife Ruth (Pooler) Snow were born in Onondaga County, New York August 11, 1824 and August 5, 1827 and married in the same county November 8, 1847. Their children are: Charles A., William W., and Lillie M. Mr. Snow settled in Fulton County in 1838 and his parents, Elijah and Nancy Snow, the following year. At that time there were twelve voters in Gorham Township. Levi and Lovina Pooler, parents of Mrs. Snow were born, the former in Vermont, the latter in New York. Post-office, Fayette. Business, cheese manufacturer, section 15.
JAMES L. GRIFFIN, son of William and Sallie Griffin of New York ws born in Delaware County, New York September 23, 1826. He was married in Medina, Michigan in July, 1854 to Eliza Acker, daughter of George and Lydia Acker of Pennsylvania who was born in Seneca County, New York January 6, 1835. Their children are George W., William F., Ovida and Walter. Mr. Griffin and his parents settled in Fulton County in 1837. Mrs. G.’s parents in 1847. Mr. G. has been supervisor and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 20.
JACOB VANOSTRAND and his wife Permelia (Merrett) VanOstrand were born in New York, the former in Saratoga County November 14, 1806, the latter in Ulster County July 31, 1807. They were married in Tompkins County, New York January 3, 1830. Their family consists of children as follows: Marietta, born November 3, 1830, died November 22, 1867; Charles, born April 2, 1837; and Frank L., born August 2, 1846. Isaac and Alida VanOstrand, parents of the above were born, the former in New Jersey, and died in Wyandot County, Ohio aged 78, the latter in New York and died in Sandusky County aged 70 years. Mr. V. took the first threshing machine into Huron County in 1834. Post-office, Fayette. Business, proprietor S.S.M., and stock raiser and farmer, section 16.

ESTELL H. RORICK, son of William and Phoebe Rorick was born in Lenawee County, Michigan September 1, 1842. He married Mary P. Acker who was born in Gorham, Fulton County, Ohio, February 19, 1848. They have one child, Clark C. Mr. Rorick settled in Fulton County in 1869. Post-office, Fayette. Business, physician and surgeon.
SOLOMON COX WYNN, son of Ulysses and Sarah Ann Wynn was born in Knox County, Ohio November 4, 1839 and his wife Cora Bell, daughter of Albright and Elizabeth Obrist in Paris, Stark County, Ohio April 18, 1848. Their children are: Ida Bell and Florence May. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 36.
WILLIAM F. STONER, son of John and Rosanna Stoner was born near Mansfield, Ohio, August 5, 1854. He settled in Fayette, Fulton County in 1870. Business, harness maker. Post-office, Fayette.
J. J. GAMBER was born in New York and settled in Fulton County in 1846. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, sections 8 and 17.
GEORGE GAMBER was born in New York and settled in Gorham Township in 1854. Post-office, Fayette, Fulton County. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 25 and 30.
S .F. WISE was born in Pennsylvania. He settled in Fayette, Gorham Township, Fulton County in 1851. Business, saddle and harness maker, lots 7 and 1.
COLUMBUS ARMSTRONG, son of Samuel B., and Susannah Armstrong, the former born in Ohio in 1812 and the latter in Pennsylvania in 1809 was born in Columbiana County, Ohio February 2, 1840. He was married in Hillsdale County, Michigan in July 1863 to Ellen Crain, daughter of Samuel and Moranda Crain of New York who was born in Fulton County, Ohio July 20, 1841. They have one son, Milton A., born in Fulton County in 1868. Mr. Armstrong enlisted in Company D, 182nd Regiment O.V.I., December 1, 1864. He took part in several battles and was honorably discharged at the close of the war. Mr. And Mrs. Armstrong each lost a brother in the war of the Rebellion. Post-office, Morenci. JOHN EARICK and his wife Rosanna (Rhodes) Earick were born in Pennsylvania September 2, 1823 and in November 1826. They were married in Richland County, Ohio in 1850. They have one son, William M. Daniel and Nancy Earick and Daniel and Susannah Rhodes, parents of this couple were born in Pennsylvania. Mr. Earick settled in Pennsylvania in 1850. Post-office, Fayette, Ohio. Business, stock dealer and farmer, section 31.
HENRY T. CAULKINS, son of Charles and Dinah Caulkins, the former of Connecticut, the latter of Ontario County, New York was born in Otsego County, New York, April 15, 1830 and with his parents settled in Fulton County, Ohio in 1845. He was married in Michigan December 7, 1857 to Elizabeth Booream who was born in Licking County, Ohio April 6, 1836. Their children are: Goodel B., Asa B., Alva B., Col. G., Donald M., Thomas H., and Earl W. Henry and Hepzibah Booream, parents of Mrs. Caulkins were born, the former in New Jersey, the latter in New Brunswick, New Jersey. They settled in Fulton County, Ohio in 1839. Mr. Caulkins has filled the office of township trustee and school director. Post-office, Fayette. Business, stock raiser and farmer, section 13.

JUDSON TROWBRIDGE, son of Abner and Eliza Trowbridge was born in Knox County, Ohio April 30, 1840 and his wife Frances A. Cottrell was born in Gorham Township, Fulton County, Ohio August 25, 1842. Their children are: Mertle J., Emily R., Ida L., and Nine Estella. Abner and Eliza Trowbridge, parents of Judson Trowbridge were born in New York in 1799 and 1803. Mrs. Trowbridge’s parents, Erastus and Emily Cottrell were from Massachusetts. Mr. Trowbridge settled in Fulton County in 1853. Post-office, Fayette. Business, engineering.

JARED PARKER, son of William and Betsey Parker of Rhode Island was born in Rhode Island in 1819. He was married in Michigan in October 1847 to Almira Brink, daughter of John D. and Harriet Brink who was born in Richland County in 1829. They have five children: George, Mary J., Ellen, Della and Addie. Mr. Parker settled in Fulton County in 1848. The county was thinly settled at that time. Mr. Parker commenced teaching in 1840 in Gorham Township and taught seven years summer and winter. He has filled the office of justice of the peace nine years, township clerk fourteen years, notary public six years and postmaster six years. Post-office, Fayette, section 19.

JOHN GAMBER,
son of John and Elizabeth Gamber was born in Seneca County, New York, February
12, 1819. His wife, Mrs. Anette Gamber, born in Ashland County, Ohio
in May 1830. They had one daughter, Alice A., born in 1845, died
in 1847. Mr. Gamber’s brothers and sisters are: Henry, Margaret,
Elizabeth, Sarah, Mary A., and George. Mrs. Gamber has one brother,
John and one sister, Sophronia (Mrs. Hollington). They were the children
of William and Amelia H. Denning of Perry County, Pennsylvania. Mr.
Gamber settled in Fulton County in 1846. Post-office, Fayette.

OLIVER B. VERITY was descended from parental stock who emigrated to Long Island, New York in the reign of Queen Anne of England. James Verity was a Frenchman and belonged to the French army occupying Turkey; became a prisoner with the Turks, formed an attachment with a Turkish lade, ran away, were married and came to Long Island as above stated. The parental lineage on my father’s side came through the name of James to me. My grandfather, James Verity was born in 1760 in Queens County, Long Island, New York and in 1788 was married to one Hannah Gritman of the same county. My father, James G. Verity, was the third child of said union, was born in Queens County, Long Island, New York January 21, 1786. At the proper age was apprenticed to a Quaker, weaver by trade, at which he worked until the age of 21 when he moved to Renselaer County, New York and married Eunice Banker at Pittstown, Renselaer County, February 12, 1812. My mother was the youngest child of Adolphus Banker and Ruth Banker, whose maiden name was Ruth Oakley of the City of New York, of English descent all the way down. Oliver B. Verity, the writer, is the first child of the marriage of James G. Verity to Eunice Banker; was born January 8, 1815, the same day and year that Andrew Jackson fought the British at New Orleans. There were eight children born afterwards: Ruth, born January 21, 1816; Caroline, born April 6, 1818; William B, born June 8, 1820; Mary Ann, born 1821; Nancy, born 1823; Hopy Jane, born in 1825; James H. born in 1830; Day Otis, born in 1832. I was married to Caroline Schofield February 28, 1838 at Lysander, Onondaga County, New York , and the children born to us were: Amasa B. S, born in Lysander County, New York May 20, 1839; Polly Eliza born at Lysander May 7, 1841; James L. born in Gorham, Lucas County, Ohio October 8, 1846; Harriet Antoinette born in Gorham July 21, 1853; Oliver Adelbert born in Gorham June 9, 1855; George N. born in Ottokee, Fulton County, Ohio December 29, 1860. There are but two living children at this date, Amasa B. S. and Oliver A. Verity. The writer came from Renselaer County, New York to Onondaga County, New York in 1830; lived there 13 years and moved to this county, then Lucas May 8, 1843. When I was at Adrian I had 50 cents in my picket and with wife and two children had to get to this county; found a friend in Albert Crane, then living south of Adrian who volunteered to keep me overnight and fetch me on the next morning; did so, and came into Gorham May 8, 1843, my goods back in Adrian. Hired a dwelling of W. A. Mace, and went keeping house without any furniture or anything to eat. Went to work by the day and in three weeks earned enough to get my goods from Adrian. In 1857 was elected probate judge of Fulton County and February 9, 1858 entered upon the duties of the office; re-elected and again in 1866 and served to February 9, 1870. In April, 1874 was called again from my farming duties to take charge of the county infirmary of Fulton County, and at this writing am in charge as superintendent. O. B. Verity.
