Ohio's Presidents - William Howard Taft
William Howard Taft

[1857-1930]
27th President

Many boys and girls dream of becoming President. But "Willie" always wanted to be a judge like his father and grandfather. He was a good student in school. He became a lawyer, a judge and Governor of the Philippine Islands.

Taft was our largest President. He was six feet, two inches tall and weighed over 300 pounds. He took a lot of teasing about his size. However, he was a good athlete and started the tradition of throwing the baseball on the opening day of each baseball season.

After his Presidency, Taft became the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. This was a job that he liked much better.

His birthplace is open in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He and John F. Kennedy are the only Presidents buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia.
